Why Would Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch Chuck with Travel Trailer

Updated 02/13/2025 | Published 02/10/2025

Question:

I recently purchased and installed the Curt A20 20k fifth wheel hitch with the curt rail kit for my 2024 Silverado 2500. I’m towing a 35 ft GD 298bh with a loaded weight of approximately 10k and a pin weight of 2k utilizing the curt turning point pin box because I have the short bed. After a couple hundred miles of towing, getting very frustrated because it has more chucking and rough ride than my travel trailer did with the same truck. What solutions should I explore? Airbags for my truck, a different hitch, shocks for the camper? Please help Thanks Matt

Hey Matt, that's frustrating to hear but my first question is what type of wedge are you using for the pin box and the A20? If it's a universal wedge that would be what I'd think the issue is. The custom fit wedge you'd need is the part # C16992. That should tighten up chucking quite a bit.

Let me know what you have now for a wedge and we can go from there. Also if you see where the movement is that is causing the noise let me know.

Hi Jameson, The is the wedge that I am using fortunately. Curt pointed me in the right direction with the wedge.

@MattM Can you see any movement between the hitch and the king pin when it is chucking? Has it gotten worse over time?

@JamesonC I honestly couldn’t tell, if there was, it wasn’t an extreme amount. I will have to watch it closely to try and tell

@MattM I would look for that and next time you hitch up see if the wedge has maybe moved out a bit and not sitting as tightly into the hitch head.
