Is it Normal for Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch to Make Noise Starting/Stopping
Updated 08/31/2026 | Published 09/09/2024 >
Question:
I have a Curt A20 5th wheel hitch. Its almost new. I have a 2024 GMC HD with puck mounting. No slider. I have popping on stop and start. Appears to have a little slack in king pin when locked. Is this a problem? Can it be adjusted?

Hey Doug, what you are describing is pretty normal and is referred to as "chucking". Some hitches have a little looser tolerances in the jaw design that can cause this and/or some trailer king pins are a little worn out which allows for more play as well. The A20 doesn't have a reputation for being noisy so I wouldn't suspect it being the problem but there isn't any type of adjustment on it's jaws.

Our Curt A20 makes the same noise! I find it quite annoying and disconcerting. Acceleration and braking always hear big knocks from the rear when towing. I don’t like it sounding like the camper is ‘moving’ in the hitch. Thinking of replacing it. Family and friends using different brands/models of hitches say they don’t hear the types of noises we do.

Hey Doug, how has the Curt A20 been working since you noticed that popping during stops and starts? Your update could make it easier for others who hear similar noises from their hitch setup.
