Hello neighbors, Steve here with etrailer.com. Today we're looking at this simple replacement round bar retainer kit for your CURT MV weight distribution systems. So folks, I'll throw an image up here of the screen. That's pretty much what that kit looks like, or one of those systems looks like, rather. Then I've circled in red circles there where these retainers go. They do, again work with your CURT MV round bar weight distribution systems.
I'll put those four item numbers up there on the screen for you. And what they do is they keep the spring bars attached to the weight distribution head and you get the two clips, locking pins, and the hex head screws. As you can see, these are beveled. Curved perfectly to match up to that head unit. Well, folks, this is a direct replacement part from CURT, so you can be sure it's gonna work with those parts I mentioned.
I'm Steven, thanks for watching.
Works with Reese hitch with round bars.
Prior to this repair I did travel 180 miles without the retaining pin in the right side socket figuring that the round bar wouldn't slip out due to it being under tension. WRONG. after my travel I found the right bar had traveled out of the socket about an inch. If I had traveled for any length of time I'm sure I could have scored the inner bore of the socket and worn the bar improperly. Or I could have lost the bar completely. DO NOT travel without these retaining pins in place.
I called etrailer to see if they had spring clips to fit a Reese hitch. They had no clips specific for Reese and I had no luck finding clips for Reese anywhere else on the internet, so I took a chance assuming that most all manufacturers would just use generic hardware outsourced from another supplier.
I choose to use the Curt retaining clips because they used screws to retain the clips to the hitch not rivets. I have a feeling that the Blue Ox clips would have worked but they have rivets. I have no idea what caused the head of the rivet on my rather new Reese hitch to sheer off but my attempts to drive the remaining rivet through the hole were unsuccessful so I drilled out the rivet stem. When I received the Curt retaining clips I assumed that the screws were either 6-32 or 8-32 but after measuring them with a thread gauge I discovered they were metric 4-.70 which uses a #30 drill bit. So after drilling and tapping the hole all fit together as it should. I lubricated the retaining pin hole in each side with spray white lithium grease.
As a belt and suspender approach I added a hose clamp around the base of the spring clip over the screw head on the right side and the rivet head on the left side. I feel this will take any strain off of the heads and even if they should sheer I will still have the spring clips secured to the hitch socket.
Joshua was a great help to me.
