Can Head Unit From Curt Q20 Be Used On Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch?

Updated 10/31/2025 | Published 02/02/2025

Question:

I currently have a Curt Q20 slider hitch mounted in my 2016 Ram 3500short bed dually e/w factory puck mount. I would like to replace the slider assembly older version with handle release that is difficult to operate with the newer Curt slider assembly. Can I purchase just the newer slider assembly with pull handle and use the existing puck mount, and fifth wheel head assembly on/with the new slider rail? My current Curt Q20 slider system is 12 years old.

Hello Rick, thanks for reaching out. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but your best option here will be to get a whole new hitch. The Q20 hitch system has basically been discontinued and replaced with the A20 series hitches. The head units and bases are not interchangeable between the two hitches.

I know what you mean about the handle and slider on the Curt hitches being tricky to operate. This is the case with all of their hitches. If you want something better, take a look at the B&W Companion # BWRVK3670. The jaw mechanism and slider on this hitch are very smooth and easy to operate, and I know this from experience. This will be a nice upgrade from a Curt. Also, the head unit on the Companion hitch is transferable to any other Companion hitch. So, if you change trucks in the future, you will just need to buy a new base, and you can reuse the head unit.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Reply below with any question or comments. Cheers!

Hey Rick, how did things work out with the B&W Companion slider for your Ram? Your experience could point others in the right direction who are thinking about upgrading from the older Curt setup.

@JesseM When trailer is hooked up, the B&W companion slider is much easier to operate than the Curt setup that I had.

@RickE Awesome! Thanks for sharing, Rick. That has been exactly my experience with these hitches as well. Glad to hear you agree! Feel free to come back anytime you need anything!
