Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Hubs and Drums - Hub with Integrated Drum - 84546UC3 Review

Today were going to review part number 84546UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for 3,500 pound axles with the 5 on 4 inch bolt pattern. This trailer hub and drum assembly will fit most 3,500 pound axles including the Dexter. The dimensions on it is 10 inches in diameter, 2 inches wide. The bolt pattern is the 5 lugs on 4 inch bolt pattern. This hub and drum assembly does come with the lug nuts, does come with the inner bearing which is part number L68149, comes with the outer bearing which is part number L44649, comes with the greased seal, part number 58846, and it also comes with the grease cap.

Now the races are included and they are already installed. You can see the outer race which is in there. If I turn it over you can see right in here the inner race. Those will come all pre-installed so the bearings will slide right in. Basically, as youll see the outer bearing will fit right in there, and the inner bearing will fit right into that race.

The seal will actually have to be installed right in there after the bearing is put in, and then the grease cap is what will go over the outer bearing. And as you can see the lug nuts, you can screw right on to the wheel studs. Again, the weight capacity on this one hub and drum assembly is 1,750 pounds so when you use this with the other one, two of them on an axle, it will have a capacity for the 3,500 pound axle. And, just to show you that measurement we had talked about. The diameter is measured inside to inside for your brake assembly so it would use a 10 inch diameter brake assembly; and then the width for the brake shoe would be measured from here to here.

So, if we put that on it would be 2 . So it will use a brake assembly that is 10 inch diameter by 2 wide. And that should do it for the review on part number 84546UC3. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly for a 3,500 pound axle.

With only 10days left before a 1,000mi trip with the family travel trailer, I decided to check one of the brakes for wear. To my great dismay the brakes were heavily worn. On last Friday afternoon, etrailer customer service helped me determine what parts would be needed for my application and for a little over $400, I ordered everything to make completely new again. I received completely assembled electric brakes, new wheel bearings and drums for four wheels. The items were rec'd on the following Wednesday with standard shipping. Wednesday evening I installed all new parts, which all were correct and now I am ready to roll with 6 days to spare. I would strongly recommend etrailer for your trailer needs. 52675

Recieved the parts in a timely manner. They are large heavy items and do move around the shipping box, however no damage occured. Had to purchase the nuts & lock washers to attach the backing plate to the axle. Other than that everything was included. I used a double10Ga. wire. Brakes went on like a dream......my wife greased the bearings so that is probably why. Immediately left Michigan for Florida with a farm tractor on the trailor, checked the hub temp at every stop and experanced no problems. "Great Stuff" Sorry no pics. 209058

These hub drum assemblies came pre-rusted for me as you can see from the photos. Even with a desiccant pack in the box it didn’t help. If it were only on the braking surfaces I wouldn’t have an issue but it’s within the bearing portion of the hub also. The other issue is the thin small plastic bag that the bearings, seals, lug nuts and grease cap are supposed to be in is flimsy and tears open allowing the bearings to bounce around all over the inside of the box. A better bag would solve the problem. A quick call to Etrailer and new drums are on the way. They said they would verify no rust this time. I’m confident they will be fine this time as Etrailer has always been great to do business with in the past! 639982

Product has been in service for over a year...with approximately 6,000 miles of service. Working great. Only concern I had was the packaging of the parts sent to me. The bearings and small parts were in a plastic bag and not in separate protective boxes. Would have preferred to not have the possibility of metal-to-metal contact with the bearings surfaces prior to installation. Other than that, prompt delivery and a great product. 728065

I wasted a lot of time and effort with auto parts stores trying to find replacement studs for my 1991 7000 lb trailer. But once I figured out that Drexel Axel was the manufacturer and doesn't sell replacement studs, just a whole hub kit, I found etrailer.com and their generic replacement kit is significantly lower cost. It arrived in 2 days with std shipping and fits just fine. The installation instructions that came with the part made the installation easy. 679173

I am a novice who decided to replace the hubs and electric brakes on my trailer myself. I purchased Dexter 10" hubs and brakes. The videos online gave the confidence to tackle the project. The items I ordered fit perfectly and I installed them with ease. The trailer is now ready to haul my motorcycle to the Sturgis Rally in two weeks. I was very impressed with etrailer.com. Great prices, fast shipping, and excellent tutorial videos. - Dan 671672

I put it on and it works fine and everything was included. Only problem was that I have three trailers with interchangeable wheels and thought this one had the same bolt circle so I ordered the wrong hub. Rather than go through the effort of returning it, I just remember one wheel is different. If I ever need a hub for one of the others I'll just use this one and get the proper one as a replacement. 641188

These parts are all available in Bearing Kit # BK2-100. If you can get back to me with whether or not you have brake flanges and the brand of your axle (most likely Lippert or Dexter) I can see which kit we have that may work. Welding a mounting flange, possible item # 4-35, is a very precise installation. The flanges need to be installed square and concentric to the hub and drum assembly and each other. For instance, part # A15R645SMD...

  • Replacement Hub for Single-Axle Trailer with 5-on-4-1/2 Bolt Pattern Using L44649/L68149 Bearings

This will prevent the awful possibility of having to pull things apart in the near future because one item has suddenly decided to fail. If everything is new you know you have a good service life ahead of you. If you do want to replace just your inner...

  • In order to pick out the correct hub assembly for a trailer you are going to need know a few key pieces of information. The first thing you will need to know is the bolt pattern of your hubs. This is so you get a hub that is compatible with your wheels. I attached an FAQ article on determining bolt pattern for you to check out. • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to a Wells Cargo SW-10 Single-Axle Service Wagon Trailer
  • A good starting point for your project to add electric drum brakes to your trailer is a review of the linked article which covers this process in detail. You will need to select brakes based on the weight rating of the axle on your trailer, which should be indicated on a sticker or plate, and you'll need to select new hub/drum assemblies that use the same bearings as the hubs currently on your trailer. This will ensure compatibility of the new hub/drum assemblies with your spindles. If...

  • Replacement Hub/ Drums, Brake Assemblies and Tires for 2003 Trail-Lite Travel Trailer
  • The Hub and Drum assembly you referenced, part # 84546UC3 has the same casting number on it, so it is most likely the correct replacement for you. I would recommend looking at your existing bearings to confirm a match. If the existing bearings you have are # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer, these are the correct replacements. For electric brake assemblies, use # 23-26 for the left side, and # 23-27 for the right. The mounting nuts, # 6-17 and lock washers, # 5-8 are not included....

  • Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly Recommendation for Dexter Hubs # 8-247
  • The 8-247 Dexter hub that you have is our part number # 84546UC3 which has drum dimensions of 10 inch diameter by 2-1/4 inches wide. That means that the Hydraulic Brake Assembly Set part # AKFBBRK-35-D that you mentioned will fit and work well. 45 to 50 lbs is the recommended torque rating for the 4 bolts that hold 10 inch brake assemblies like these.

  • Replacing Dexter 008-249-07 Hubs with Hubs that Have 5 on 4-1/2 Inch Bolt Pattern
  • I have good news! The 008-249-07 number you found indicates that your Tentrax trailer is equipped with Dexter hubs that use the # L68149 inner bearing and the # L44649 outer bearing. With this in mind you can easily replace the existing hubs with a set that features a much more common 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. For this I recommend the Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 84546UC3. This is essentially the same hub that you have but with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. The bearings,...

  • Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to a Utility Trailer with a 3500 Lbs Axle and Brake Flanges
  • You will need several items to add electric brakes to your Carry-On Utility trailer. Starting with the trailer you will need a hub and drum that matches the bearings and seal on your trailer spindle and your wheel bolt pattern. The only way to be sure is to check the bearing part numbers and seal part number, but with a 3,500 lbs Dexter axle that has brake mounting flanges you will most likely have the # L44649 Outer and # L68149 inner bearings and # 58846 seal. If these are the correct...

  • Choosing Replacement Trailer Brakes, Hubs and Actuator for 1978 Calkins Tandem Axle Boat Trailer
  • You'll want to check a few details on the trailer so you can select compatible replacement parts. First, you want to confirm the axles' rated capacity; this should be noted on a sticker or plate on the axles themselves. Based on the info you provided it may be that you have two 3500-lb axles. Your brakes and hubs must match the axle rating. Next you'll want to take note of the size of the current brakes. You need to confirm the diameter and depth. You also want to note their mounting...

  • How To Remove the Brake Drum If the Brakes Are Locked On a Reinell Boat Trailer
  • A trailer hub and brake drum should be able to be removed by just sliding off the spindle after the castle nut is removed. The castle nut is located underneath the grease cap. The trailer brake should not be activated. If the brake is locked that must mean that there is pressure on that wheel cylinder keeping the brake shoes against the brake drum. I would first checked the surge coupler on your trailer to see if the master cylinder is stuck or if anything is wrong with the coupler...

  • Replacement Options for Hub and Drum With 09067 Outer Bearing and 15123 Inner Bearing
  • Unfortunately we do not have any hubs that use those bearing numbers. Your options would be to remove your old spindle and install a new spindle such as # R40484 with compatible hub and drum such as # 84546UC3. You could also replace your entire axle with one such as # 35545E-ST-89, which is rated for 3,500 lbs and has electric brakes. In order to determine the correct axle you would need to measure from hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center like in the accompanying photo....

  • How to Adjust Electric Drum Trailer Brakes with Video
  • On electric drum brakes there is a star wheel at the bottoms of the assemblies that you can turn using a flat head screw driver or brake adjusting tool # W80630. Turning the wheel one way will bring the shoes closer in and turning it the other way pushes the shoes out more. You will adjust the brakes using that wheel until there is a slight but constant drag of the shoe pads on the drum. I have included a link to a video and at about the 4:39 mark our installed begins adjusting the brakes.
