Brake Mounting Flange Recommendation for Dexter 3,500 lb Axle
Products Featured in This Question
Question:
Ive compiled a cart with all the suggest parts from this persons question and expert response: https://www.etrailer.com/question-23137.html. However, my Carry-On Trailer did not come with a brake mounting flange. Heres the axle that is on my trailer, and this is pretty much all you see between the tires underneath the trailer: https://www.carry-ontrailer.com/parts-accessories/3k7764/. Which brake mounting flange would you recommend I buy to accompany all the suggested hardware from the previous persons question and experts response? I.e. which brake mounting flange would go best with item # AKEBRK-35 and that also fits on my Dexter 3k7764 Idler Axle 3500 lbs.. Thanks so much! The sooner you respond, the sooner I can order.

Looks like you have a 3,500 lb Dexter axle without brake flanges. The correct brake flanges for that style of axle is the part # 4-35. Welding a mounting flange, possible item # 4-35, is a very precise installation. The flanges need to be installed square and concentric to the hub and drum assembly and each other. If the flange is installed incorrectly rapid brake lining wear, improper braking, trailer dog legging, bearing failure, rapid tire wear and, worst of all, weakening of the axle can occur.
Usually special jigs are used to install the flange. The jig will keep the flange square and concentric to the axle and spindle and will not allow the heat from the welding process to warp or pull the flange out of shape or position. I would recommend a welder with experience in trailer building for this installation. I do not recommend this installation for a person inexperienced in trailer building and repair.
