Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Video Transcript for Curt Weight Distribution - WD Only - C17002 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System. This evenly distributes weight over the axles of your tow vehicle and trailer for improved stability and control. Ultimately it's going to create a more level ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. Now this system's going to use round spring bars. These are constructed of solid forged steel for strength and durability. To adjust the spring bar tension, just switch the links and the lift chains. These lift brackets are going to mount to the trailer frame.

The brackets are going to take up about four inches along your frame and they're going to fit frames that don't exceed two and three quarters of an inch wide. I do want to point out that these are clamp on brackets. No drilling is necessary. They've got the threaded hole here in the back and will accept one of these sets of bolts. It's going to come with shorter bolts and longer bolts. The longer bolts are for narrower trailer frames.

The shorter bolts are for wider trailer frames. There at the head assembly, when you're wanting to tilt it, the desired tilt is achieved with a traditional washer design. So basically what you would do is you would add or remove washers from this spacer rivet right here to get the tilt that you need for your application. So that is a traditional design. It's very easy to do.

The spacer rivet installs between the head assembly right here and the front face of the shank. There's a slot located directly below the ball platform for that to install. Then those washers basically stack up to fill this area here which is going to allow you to get the tilt that you need for your application. The unit's made from a steel construction that's going to feature a durable powder coated finish. It's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The head assembly will accept a sway control attachment ball on either side of the unit.

Sway control systems are sold separately. If you're interested in one you can find them at It's also going to come with the snap up lever. This allows you to get these lift brackets up in place and engaged once you have your chains connected. This bar just allows you to get the proper leverage that you need and reduces the lifting required by the trailer jack. The system's going to come with everything that you see here on the table. It does not include a hitch ball. When selecting a hitch ball you'll need to make sure that it has an inch and a quarter diameter shank. Ton weight capacity for this unit is 800 to 1000 pounds. Maximum gross towing weight is 10,000 pounds. This is designed for two inch by two inch trailer hitches that are rated for use with weight distribution systems. It does come with the shank which is what the head assembly mounts to and then the shank also goes into the two inch by two inch receiver tube of the hitch. It does come with a 5/8 inch pin and clip to get that secured inside of your hitch. I did take a shank length measurement. So from the very back of the shank to the very front, I got a measurement of 12 inches long. From the center of the hitch pinhole to the center of the ball hole on the head assembly, with head assembly installed at a straight angle, that measured around 13 1/4 inches. If you have this installed at the highest setting with the unit in the rise position, it's going to give you a maximum rise of about 5 1/2 inches. That's measured from the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch or the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. With this in the drop position and the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's going to give you a maximum drop of about 2 1/2 inches doing those same measurements. I do want to mention that when it comes to maintenance, you will want to keep the socket mounted ends of the spring bars and the lock pins and the head assembly free from dirt. You also want to keep those well lubricated. Then also keep the lift brackets clean and lubricated to ensure ease of operation. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System.

Do you have a question about this Weight Distribution?

  • Comparing Curt Weight Distribution Hitch Systems C17002 and C17052
  • The two Curt weight distribution (WD) hitches you referenced, parts # C17002 and # C17052, are both round bar type WD systems that are intended for trailer tongue weights between 800 and 1000-lbs. Both include the same component parts (and both do NOT include a hitch ball or friction anti-sway mechanism). The main difference between them is that the MV # C17052 has grease zerks at the head to make it easier to lubricate that friction point. I confirmed this with my contact at Curt.

  • Lubrication Points of the Curt Weight Distribution System Part # C17002
  • According to Curt for the Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17002, they recommend keeping the socket ends of the spring bar where they sit in the head and the lift brackets attached to the trailer frame lubricated. I have pointed both of these locations out in the attached photo. You will also want to keep a good amount of grease on the hitch ball as well. I recommend using a white lithium grease like part # L10308 in the above locations on your weight distribution system.

  • Longer Weight Distribution Shank Needed for the Curt # C17002
  • We do have a variety of weight distribution (WD) shanks that you can swap out with the shank you are using for the Curt # C17002. One of the most popular options that we carry is the Curt # C17123 which has a 7" long shank and allows you to adjust your round bar system to a max 8-1/4" drop or a max 11-3/4" rise. I have also attached a link to our selection of WD shanks that are compatible with a 2" hitch receiver. As long as they have a squared side and don't slope down like part...

  • Is a Weight Distribution System Recommended for a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 with 7,000 Lb Trailer
  • A weight distribution system is recommended if the gross trailer weight (GTW) of the trailer is more than 50% of the vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Therefore, yes I would recommend using a weight distribution system on your 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 even though you already have a set of airbags. The reason for this is that not only will the system work to improve braking and handling, most of them have built-in sway control which is an extremely useful added bonus. Trailer...

  • How to Select Weight Distribution Hitch for Coleman Pop-Up Camper Towed by 2004 Toyota Tacoma
  • The weights of pop-up tent trailers from Coleman and other makers can vary quite a bit depending on the number of axle and the specific OEM equipment installed so the best way to go for selecting the correct weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) set-up is to measure its loaded tongue weight. The linked video may be helpful. Scale # 5780 makes is really easy to measure your trailer's fully-loaded tongue weight (TW) so you can choose a properly-rated WD/SC system. You'll want to load...

  • Weight Distribution System for Towing 7,000 lb Trailer
  • When picking out a weight distribution system you'd want to aim for the weight range needed for how your trailer is loaded to the heaviest you'll be at. For your situation the higher rated Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17002 would be the way to go as it has a range of 800-1,000 lbs but ideally you'd go with a system with a wider range like the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP61009 which has a range of 600-1,200 lbs which would be more ideal for you since you'll have...

  • Will Curt Chain Hangers C17208 Work on Curt Weight Distribution System C17002
  • Yes, the Curt chain hangers part # C17208 that you referenced could be used with the Curt Weight Distribution System part # C17002 that you referenced. The set screws of the hangers will fit a trailer frame that is 1-3/4 inches wide too.

  • How to Choose a Weight Distribution System for Fun Finder Camper With 2014 Toyota Tacoma
  • In order to choose the best weight distribution system, you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go Fun Finder plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2014 Toyota Tacoma. To determine your trailer's loaded tongue weight you can use a scale such as the Sherline # 5780 or by using one of the methods outlined in the help article on determining tongue weight I've linked for you. • What Shank to use With Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System?
  • To start with, yes the Replacement Bolt Kit # C17150 will work with Curt Weight Distribution System # C17002; the bolt kit is a fit for round bar Curt weight distribution systems like the one you have. In terms of the shank it sounds like you need to get another 5 inches of drop. The shank on your Curt Weight Distribution System # C17002 offers a maximum of 2-1/2 inches of drop so you will need a shank that gives you at least 7-1/2 inches. If that is the case, either of the shanks you...
