Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

All products are great and as expected. One box was damaged in shipment due to the heavy nature of the parts. A smaller part fell out through a hole in box. George at etrailer got me a replacement part quickly with no issues.

One of the most important parts of this system is the Ball, so the customer should be asked for their Ball size and that should be what they send with the system, or they should specify you need to purchase the correct ball size with the system. Instead, they sent a 2" ball which I missed in the description of what comes with it, that's my fault. Now I have to search around for the correct Ball to fit my trailer and the system, and I'm stuck with a worthless 2" ball with a large shank that doesn't fit 90% of all ball shanks. I emailed Trailer about this and their reply was it comes with a 2" ball... not helpful.

If you need a slightly bigger size ball mount, you can change out the two inch ball for the two and five sixteenths ball mount part # EQ91-00-6100. To swap them out, you would need part # ALL643216.

Excellent product. This is my 2nd Equalizer hitch. First one was a 10,000lb I used on my 29ft Keystone Camper that was around 8500lbs loaded towing with an 04 F250. I now have a 6,000lb I am using on my 6x12 V-nose around 3500lbs with a 600lb tounge weight towing with a 2016 Tacoma. These hitches make a world of difference when towing & are pretty easy to setup. Especially after doing it once lol.

I towed my trailer out West in July. No problems on windy roads thanks to your product!

Provides excellent sway control and load distribution for my camping trailer.
It was also easy to install and setup.

I really couldn't figure out how this device was going to help with towing our 19' RV. From an engineering standpoint I'm still baffled. The RV center applied it to our new Coachmen Apex Nano so I don't have the experience of installing it myself. They made it seem simple. The only "special" tool they used was a high-torque air gun to secure the ball. I was seriously concerned that the weight of the RV (3,500 Lbs.) would try to control my Dodge Ram ProMaster 2500 van. While the van could certainly use more towing power, I was blown away at how smoothly it towed the RV. I expected very little and was pleasantly surprised by the performance of this system. The first year I put 600 miles on our RV and was never once disappointed or regretful of my purchase. It's really nice that reversing the vehicle has no adverse effect. Some stabilizers won't allow you to reverse. The cost of the unit was a little shocking at first and you may ask yourself where all the money is with just a few heavy metal pieces. The money is in the magic of the performance. Spend the extra dollars on the best, it's worth the peace of mind while towing.

Would have been 5star.
The hitch it
well built and strong. I was told by the E-Trailer operator that it came with a 2in ball already installed. Come to find out it doesn’t. This is frustrating now our trip is going to be postponed or canceled. Apparently you need a special sockoand short thread 2in ball. Bummer

I have been using my Equalizer weight distribution hitch for a year now. It truly is the best hitch I have ever used. Towing through high winds in eastern Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming our trailer (a 21 foot Escape) tracked perfect with no sway what-so-ever. Also there was one occasion that I had to make a very sudden stop to avoid a deer running in front of me. The trailer was rock solid, with no sway. Thank you Equalizer. It took a little time to set up the system properly, but, with a little help from a few friends it was easy. I found it important to have a local tire shop assist in torquing everything to the recommended specs. Great product and lots of good support from eTrailer.

The Equalizer hitch continues to work great. During our many camping trips throughout British Columbia, Montana and the Oregon Coast the hitch has kept our trailer in-line and we have had no swaying issues in some very heavy weather. Great product and well worth the money!

by:

Ever since we purchased this Weight distribution system, we have been on 7 trips with our travel trailer. Every trip the system far exceeded our expectation. The built quality is amazing and by the looks of it, it will last a lifetime if taken care off properly. We would recommend this system to anyone planning to tow their travel trailer and wants the peace of mind that a gust of wind or fast-moving tractor trailer is NOT going to have you take evasive maneuvers.

An year later and 18 trips in, the Equalizer weight distribution system is as good as it was on day one. You dont always get to see/feel it working but the confidence we have taking our trailer on highways knowing that this system is doing exactly what it should grows with every trip. The system is definitely worth considering for anyone who tows anything that is more than 2000 pounds in weight.

by:

The new hitch allowed us to get our camper almost exactly level. It barely feels like we have something hooked to the truck. We get no wind pushing us around when trucks pass us on the interstate. It was easy to attach to our camper. Your shipment came in exactly when you said it would. Thank you very much for your good service and for the good hitch.

James L.

I have loved your hitches since 1995. We pulled a camper for 10 years without one and basically started avoiding the interstate highways because of what happened when trucks passed us. The guy at the place we stored our camper had a used Equilizer that we bought and used for 12 years. We got a new tow vehicle with a higher hitch and the old Equilizer was welded and could not be adjusted. Thats when we bought the new one. I watch people at the campgrounds wrestling with other hitches and I just calmly hook mine up and go. I hardly feel the camper behind us. You have a great product and I will use it till I cant camp any more.

The Equalizer weight distribution system works very well. Sway and bounce are eliminated. Unfortunately, the unit does not come with the plastic sway bracket jackets (Item # EQ95-01-5150) so add those when ordering. The recommended grease (part # 91-00-4250) is also not included but any quality bearing grease will suffice. The plastic jackets eliminate a lot of the noise usually heard when turning, while also protecting the bars and brackets from wear & tear. The installation instructions are well written. Someone with average knowledge of tools should have no problem installing this unit by themselves. Locating a 1 7/8" thin wall socket and a torque wrench capable of 430 lbs to install the ball to the hitch head is the only real challenge. I ended up buying a large 3/4" socket set from Harbor Frieght. I used the long breaker bar from the set and a long pipe to get the ball nut tight, then my friendly local truck repair shop adjusted the torque to the proper specs using their obscenely expensive Snap-On brand monster torque wrench. It only cost me a round of coffee. After initial set up, attaching and removing the unit between truck and trailer is quick and easy. I recommend this item.

The usual great service from etrailer. Second of these hitches I’ve mounted and they’re great.

Hauling 21 ft. travel trailer. Big difference in how it tows with this hitch as opposed to hauling without an equalizer hitch. Highly recommend this hitch, none better. I have hauled around 4000 miles, mostly mountain roads in the west, with some good winds and my trailer is rock solid with this hitch. Do not tow without a equalizer hitch and if you want the best, get this one. Excellent customer service from e-trailer on this and everything I order from them. About to order rear stabilizer coupler and pins to fix electric stabilizer from them.

by:

We purchased a 19 foot RV travel trailer last year, and even though this may be considered a smaller trailer, it was considerably bigger and heavier than the pop up trailers we have used for the last 20 years, so a new venture for us.

I knew I wanted a weight distribution and sway control hitch, but was not sure which to buy. So, I posted the question on this site, and this hitch was the one recommendation by this site's representative.

The quality of the hitch and hardware is excellent, and the instructions for installation and adjustment were very clear and easy to understand.

So far, we have pulled the trailer on several trips from East Tennessee to central WV.

On the long stretches of freeway driving, often with heavy traffic, and on the steep grades, and curves going over the mountains, I was very pleased with the performance of this hitch. The hitch provides excellent sway control, and with proper adjustment there are absolutely no steering or handling issues with the tow vehicle.

The guys on this site know their stuff!

by:

Entire order went very well except that I put the wrong address on my credit card information. Donna, from customer service, called and got everything cleared up and my order was shipped within hours. I havent used the hitch yet but it was all in excellent condition.

Ed

Installation went well and we have been towing our rv since with no problems at all. I have had no sway at all with the hitch.

by:

The Equalizer has been a great hitch. I needed the sway control more than the weight distribution in windy Kansas, and this hitch virtually eliminated sway. The weight distribution does alleviate bouncing and makes me feel completely in control of the trailer. I bought the pads to control noise, and I’m glad I did. No complaints.

The only downside is that the hitch is heavy and bulky. I’ve yet to find a simple and clean place to store it.

by:

Straight forward install on our 22’ Airstream. Experienced zero sway issues on 5 trips that have included highway speeds. Would purchase again.

After 1 year and many trips, no problems with the Equalizer hitch.

by:

I can't speak on the hitch itself because I was never able to use it, but I hear great things. However, I want to save someone else the hassle here, so if your camper trailer has a propane or battery platform on the top side of the V hitch/tongue - you may need to do some serious modifications to put the brackets in the correct position. Check the manual and measure before you order!

by:

Excellent! This has been a great product for me. As a first time travel trailer owner I was concerned with the safety of towing a trailer and concerned with controlling swaying of the trailer and tow vehicle. I had towed a rental trailer once and got a good scare when it started swaying when I tried to pass a transport truck. I set this up using the provided instructions and all worked great. Tow vehicle is level and no swaying in traffic or in very windy conditions. I even had to change tow vehicles in the middle of an extended trip and the conversion to the new vehicle was very easy even though I was "on the road". I just followed the instructions again and all worked very well.
I highly recommend this unit.

I just drove from VT to PA to SC to MD to CT and back to VT, close to 3K miles and this weight distribution/sway control worked great ( I think it did, my first sway bar). Not sure on the effectiveness of the weight distribution as I was pulling with 2018 Jeep G.C. and that SUV does not sag under 500 lbs tongue weight. You can feel that you are pulling a trailer when a semi passes you going over 80 miles an hour, or when you get hit with a side wind on a bridge, but all other conditions are fine (e.g. passing semi truck or normal side wind). Easy to back up into any place. On advice to everybody, keep it lubricated, if you don't, enjoy screeching noise with every turn :). Happy towing.

by:

Spoke with a knowledgable gal at etrailer.com and she convinced me this is the best hitch to use. I ordered it on Sunday evening, it arrived on Tuesday and was in perfect condition. Hitch took 3 hours to install. A $12.00 (regular wall thickness) 1-7/8 was needed from [on-line retailer]. Hitch works very well. So glad I didn’t buy a cheap hitch. This one does everything well. Highly recommend etrailer.com, EQ37060ET Hitch and 3/4 Drive 12 pt. Socket with (3/4 to 1/2 adapter) socket. I will continue to do business with etrailer.com.

by:

My forst equalizer hitch is a winner. Way easier to use than my friend's version with the chains ... Easy setup and works great on my 4,000 lb. camper. Almost completely eliminated sway from passing trucks, etc. Can back up without unhooking which is great.

by:

I don't have any previous experience towing travel trailers to compare to, but I could definitely sense it's value and worth. On the first trip after installing the stabilizer, we encountered sustained winds and a large amount of truck traffic. The trailer was stable and tracked well. The installation is straightforward and took about 2 1/2 hours which included making a couple of adjustments and testing.

If you were to use the # EQ37100ET with a lower than 600lbs of tongue weight the bars may not have enough tension on...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2017 Dutchmen Aerolite 174E
The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system, part # EQ37060ET, might be a good option for your 2017 Aerolite 174E depending on how heavy it is when it's loaded. To determine the correct system we need the trailer's loaded tongue weight plus the amount of weight you add to the tow vehicle behind its rear axle because that counts as tongue weight in this instance. The Aerolite's GVWR is 3,850 pounds. That's the heaviest the trailer is rated to be when fully loaded. Its loaded tongue weight...

  • Best Weight Distribution with Sway Control to Tow a Trailer with 460 Pounds of Loaded Tongue Weight
The top of the line weight distribution system to tow your T@B with a 2015 Toyota 4Runner is the Equal-i-zer, part # EQ37060ET. It's rated from 200 to 600 pounds of tongue weight and you want your total tongue weight to fall right within this range. However, any weight added behind the rear axle of your 4Runner also acts like tongue weight for a weight distribution system so you need to add this to your 460 pounds. If you're still under the 600 pounds max then this is a great choice. For...

  • Recommended Sway Control for a Single Beam Tongue Boat Trailer
I do have a solution for you, but the Curt Friction Sway Control # 17200 can not be used on single beam trailers or trailers with surge brakes. While you did not mention a weight distribution system, that is going to be the only way to get sway control on your trailer with out custom fabrication. You will use a pole tongue adapter like the Pole-Tongue Adapter for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems # EQ95-01-5950. This adapter attaches to your trailer's tongue and provides properly...

  • Can Different Equal-i-zer Spring Bars Be Used With The Same Head
Because of the way the head and spring bars are designed the bars will only fit the head of the same rating. I know most systems will let you swap out the bars, and that would certainly be ideal. If you want to switch to the 6k bars # EQ90-01-0699 then you will need to replace the head with the # EQ90-02-0600 as well. The brackets and the shank will work for all systems so there is no need to replace those.

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer that Weighs 4,000 lbs
Typically tongue weight for a travel trailer is right at 10 percent of the total trailer weight and sometimes up to 15 percent. So for a 4,000 lb trailer you'd most likely have a 400 lb tongue weight but could possibly have a 600 lb tongue weight. The great news is that the Husky Centerline kit part # HT32215 has a tongue weight range of 400 to 600 lbs just like what you'd need so this kit would work well for you. If you can find a scale near you for measuring the weights of vehicle you...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver for 2015 BMW X5 M Sport
For your 2015 BMW X5 M Sport model, I recommend the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # 13077. This will require fascia trimming but will also allow you to get the maximum towing and tongue weight capacity out of your vehicle as the hitch is rated at 6000 lbs towing and 600 lb tongue weight. This is the only confirmed fit we have for your M model vehicle. A weight distribution hitch will help with the overall ride of the trailer and will help mitigate sway. I recommend the Equal-i-zer...

  • Equalizer Hitch Recommendation for Travel Trailer that Weighs 3,500 lbs Dry
Most likely the part # EQ37060ET that you referenced would be exactly what you would need. As long as your tongue weight is under 600 lbs this system would work great for you. Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total weight of a trailer so most likely this system would be perfect for you.

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2017 Toyota Tacoma Towing 3,000 lb Camper
A weight distribution system is always recommended if the weight of your trailer is more than 50 percent of your tow vehicle's weight. Since the small camper you are towing has a GVWR of 3,000 lbs and a 2017 Toyota Tacoma weighs around 4,000 lbs, even if your camper isn't fully loaded it will almost certainly still be more than 50 percent of your Tacoma's weight. Based on your camper's 3,000 lb GVWR your total tongue weight (the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer plus the weight...

  • Best Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2020 Palomini 181fbs
The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use. For a trailer that weighs around...
