Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese Strait-Line system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of the Strait-Line system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. These specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control.

Weight Distributing Hitch

Dual-Cam Sway Control

Reese's dual-cam sway-control system stops trailer sway before it begins. This is a significant improvement over traditional friction-style controls, which help to correct sway only after it has already begun. This specially designed system uses unique sliding devices called "cams" to suspend the spring bars of your weight-distribution system. One end of a cam bolts onto your trailer's frame, and the other end attaches to the lift bracket via the lift chain. The rounded, hooked ends of the spring bars then sit in these cams. The controlled placement of the spring bars keeps your system secure while still allowing enough movement for free, easy interaction between your trailer and your tow vehicle.

Dual-Cam Sway Control Turning

During basic, straight-line towing, the cams lock in place and hold the trailer steady by applying constant, consistent pressure to both sides. This keeps the trailer from swaying in crosswinds. When you go into a turn, the cams unlock and slide to allow a controlled, full-radius maneuver. If you swerve suddenly, the cams will give to accommodate the movement while still working to obtain a straight angle, thereby maintaining control of the trailer.

I used this for the first time Pulling a 22 foot travel trailer with a Jeep Gladiator. I hit high winds 20+ gust to 40, heavy rain. I have towed thousands of miles and was ready for anything NO Sway at all felt solid I had people tell me I could buy a cheaper hitch YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

I have now pulled my trailer over 8000 miles this year 22 ft rockwood about 5700lbs loaded with a jeep gladiator rubicon I never had any issues. I always hook up my sway control with no load much easier I followed the install video on e-trailer , very helpful not cheap but worth every dime to me

OK, I waited to write this review until I had an opportunity to really use this product. We just completed a 950 mile camping trip around Colorado. We went up and over mountains, around curves, and traveled in the interstate. All I can say is, WOW! I wish I had purchased this years ago. We pull a 7000# travel trailer with a new F150 EcoBoost. Before installing this we were pushed around in windy canyons, semis and dealt with sway descending the mountains. This product is the real deal. I can safely travel on the interstate at speeds up to 75 MPH thanks to this product.

I have a 33 TT towing with an ecoboost. I think the hitch I have is too week. My TT never gets loaded over 6,500 yet I still get a bad front end drift? I think its the WD I currently have. Does this hitch really solve that problem? My TV is a super crew lariat off road package with c rated tires

Weight distribution can help handling and steering when properly set up. This system also has an integrated sway control system also improves handling and stability. With your travel trailer loaded and ready to go, having about 650 pound of tongue weight, this system is rated appropriately for your needs. If you are experiencing too much front end sway you may need to make some adjustments to place more of the load on the front axle These adjustments can be made at the angle of the head. Please see your specific installation instructions for more details.

I added this hitch setup to a 2023 F250 - 2023 Hawk horse trailer with tack room and I could not be happier. It allows the truck to maintain its proper ride height and eliminates all the minor steering corrections needed when driving at highway speeds on less than perfect roads. Proper setup is key and takes time but the outcome is well worth the time and money investment. This is the 2nd straight line set up I have had on my vehicles for horse trailer towing - first was for an Expedetion with a smaller trailer which provided me with a decade of confident trailering.

by:

The product was not only a perfect physical fit for my truck and travel trailer, but it it works so well I no longer drive with white knuckles. The etrailer support team worked with me to figure out my real needs versus my preciously rookie "wants" which were somewhat uninformed wants. My Trunion Bar WD Hitch with Optional sway control makes ZERO noise in use or backing up, nor does it impart any felt knuckling.

Absolutely the best working hitch ever. No noise, clacking and knuckling like friction hitches. The sway control is amazing.

by:

Ordered same unit 9 years ago this one was for our brand new trailer. Just what I needed. Delivered so quickly very fast service

by:

I've been very happy with the system that we got, we put almost 7,000 miles on it in 2017 and it rode great. I added a secondary friction sway control to compliment the control provided by the leveling bars and cam assembly and over those miles it never felt uneasy. A couple of times we were in some pretty good cross winds and I would notice enough to put two hands on the wheel but the rest of the time it was almost easy to forget we were towing a 28' trailer.
I'd definitely recommend spending a little time at your local Cat Scales to find out your specific truck / trailer and tongue weights, but this hitch and distribution assembly gave us the ability to tune the tongue weight into right where we wanted by the selection of the right link.
The peace of mind the overall control that it provided going down the road is well worth it.

by:

I purchased the weighted distribution hitch a year ago and have towed my rv trailer on a dozen trips. It minimizes the sway from wind and being passed by semi trucks. Towing is much easier now. The installation directions are clear and there is a YouTube video to watch. I installed the weight distribution hitch myself, it took about 4 hours to install and adjust the cams. I would buy this again, worth the money.

by:

The sway control worked OK when the hitch was new but after 8000 miles and as the hitch wore in, my 32 foot trailer became harder to control as the trailer mounted sway brackets developed flat spots on the rollers - the grinding noise which got worse as the hitch heated up from the vehicles exhaust has become unbearable. I have elected to order a different hitch / sway system which unfortunately is not sold by etrailer.

I have reached out to my contacts at Reese regarding your concerns about your Straight-Line weight distribution system and get the following information that I wanted to pass along you you: It is normal for the dual cam portion of the hitch to develop wear or flat spots on the rollers. The spring bars constantly move fore and aft on the dual cam and they will wear. We maintain this metal on metal friction to minimize sway. Yes the metal on metal contact will create noise when making turns and more noticeable when making turns at slow speeds. This is all part of how the system works with all the parts and pieces.

by:

Pulled an 11,000 lbs enclosed trailer from Arizona to Rhode Island. Once I got the load adjusted, I didn’t have enough weight on the tongue, it worked well. I’ll buy it again and would recommend it.

by:

Exactly what I was looking for. Provides sway prevention rather than just control. Very noisy just like all sway control hitches. Definitely recommend.

by:

We bought a very large travel trailer after having owned on before. With the first camper I eventually ended up with a Reese cam sway control as the only way to control sway in Kansas cross winds. I made the mistake with our new camper of following the recommendation of the dealer on a hitch for the new camper (36ft 9600lbs unloaded). It was really just a variation of equalizer bars and man what a mistaKe that was! I looked for the Reese cam system but wasnt finding it in my searches - then realized they changed the name to the Strait-line. This thing is amazing! What a difference in the wind. And you back up without doing anything to the hitch which I guess can be an issue with 4-points. When setting it up follow the instructions to the letter, and always think “keep thongs symmetrical.” It wont disappoint. Love it.

by:

This sway system is the best I have ever used. I pulled a 16ft cargo trailer through the mountains with a Sierra 1500. The rig stayed very stabile and I had zero issue with sway.

by:

My order game when they said it would have always been satisfied with E trailer.

by:

I had experience with towing travel trailers before, but it had been a while. When we decided to buy a new trailer, the hitch setup the trailer dealer proposed just didn't seem right for the job. Doing some research on my own, I came across the etrailer.com site. From the information that was available on the site I was able to focus in on what I thought would be the best fit for my F-150 towing an 8,000 lb + trailer. When I called with questions, I was fortunate that I talked to Wayne--one of etrailer's product specialists. This was like talking to a trusted brother. We discussed a few different brands and the pros and cons; but in the end decided the Strait-Line RP66084 would be the best fit. After that conversation, I did some more research on my own and--besides discovering that Wayne's advice was fantastic and spot on--found that the Strait Line system proposed was top ranked. The features I was looking for: (1) Leveling (weight distribution) capabilities (2) Sway control (3) Safety (4) Tracking (holding the trailer steady behind you when taking curves (5) Ability to back up without having to get out of truck and manually release a brake bar and (6) simple enough to install for a shade tree mechanic. The Strait-Line fit the bill and I'm very appreciative that etrailer.com has experts--rather than sales-focused pushy people--to help you make the right decision. I've pulled my trailer with ease and the Strait-Line has lived up to every expectation. And etrailer.com's price was great and the shipping had it delivered sooner than expected. It's rare when you can say you are COMPLETELY SATISFIED with a product, service, quality, and price--but I can that about my purchase of the Strait-Line RP66084 from etrailer.com

Greattowed trailer through wind and hail on way to Floridasure glad I had this hitch setup!

by:

I can't vouch for the product as yet, because I haven't installed it. I can however comment on the service & etrailers excellent way of updating the progress of the transaction. It was very efficiently & fast. I ordered the hitch on Sunday night and UPS drove up in front of the house on Wednesday about 1:30 pm and delivered it. That is great service by any ones standards. I've read the instructions some & it looks like it will take some time to install this unit. There are a number of tools that are needed to accomplish the task & not all of them are in just everybody's tool box. (unless you are a heavy equipment mechanic) which my son-in-law is, so I had access to everything I needed. A friend also bought this hitch & purchased all the tools needed to do the job so I am all set to strike out and install the hitch, as soon as it takes a turn for the better weather wise. The hitch is a massive heavy duty unit that looks to be able to handle the job with ease. When I get it installed & use it awhile I will repost a review concerning it's use & installation info including the quirks & all the things needed to measure & drill, etc. to put it to use. I again want to thank etrailer for their attention to every detail of the transaction & the prompt service & almost miraculous delivery in such a short time right to my door & in a complete state. (nothing missing) it was very well packaged to stand up to the rigors of shipping.Kudos Etrailer...

Ive been using the Reese Straight-Line system since 2006, its the best performing distribution hitch Ive owned. I had a traditional round bar set up w friction sway control on my previous trailer. The straight-line gives you an extremely solid

by:

What a piece of engineering! I haven't towed with this yet but the design looks great. I've read other reviews about how long the installation takes, the directions seem simple so I don't anticipate any problems. My unloaded, as shipped TW is 600lbs, adding a battery and full propane tanks plus the hitch weight brings the TW up to 800lbs. I should have plenty of extra capacity with these.

I just pulled 500 miles with zero sway. When being overtaken by a semi, the whole rig wants to move instead of just the camper. I find this normal and acceptable.

by:

OMG, the Reese straight-line weight distribution hitch is fantastic. No complaints whatsoever. Pull a 23 foot Rockwood trailer of 3,200 pounds with my 2016 Ram 1500. Pass the semi-trailers with confidence and absolutely no white knuckles. Great product.

Thanks guys.

Thanks for your letter.Your product is preforming very well. My trailer is very steady behind my track,

by:

Excellent product. It's an easy DYI installation. It only took about an hour to install to spec. Not much to say about the weight distro, other than it's nice to have my truck riding next to normal. I was most impressed with the built-in anti-sway in high winds while crossing a large body of water. Never once did I feel the vehicle was going to go off the bridge, or any whipping of the trailer. The two felt like one unit. Highly recommend this setup

5/18/2018

I’m still pleased with the system. It was easy to install and configure

by:

I have used the Reese weight distribution and sway control system twice now over the past year to tow a 6K pound, 30'Jayco travel trailer with my 2014 4x4 Tundra Platinum (which had, at the time of purchase, the largest tow capacity of any 1500 truck on the market). Before having the system installed, the trailer felt like a sail behind my truck and was pushing me around - felt like I was navigating an ocean liner. After the system was installed, I've taken the trailer over one of the most challenging (and beautiful) highways in the country - HWY 299 in Humboldt/Trinity County, California. This trek has steep grades, many poorly-banked hairpin turns, and gusty conditions, and I could barely tell I was towing anything. Huge difference in performance, and tremendous improvement in my peace of mind. Would highly recommend the system.
Note: I also have an aftermarket brake controller on the Tundra as the '14 model didn't come with an integrated controller. In TOW-HAUL mode, that truck has no problem in the muscle department towing that trailer, just needed the extra security/stabilization of the Reese system.

by:

Perfect,
this is exactly what we needed
for a weight distributing hitch w/sway control, shipping and service was very good. Will use this company again. Thanks

Steve C.

12/24/2019

Great, used this setup quite a few times in the past year, still doing what I bought it for. Thanks Steve C

by:

This thing works well, as advertised. It did boost the rear end of the truck up immediately and seemed to have a positive affect on sway. I was able to back up with it as advertised.

The issue I had with it and what prevents me from scoring higher is despite the fact that I followed the instructions to the letter, the lower brackets are installed by drilling out holes and hammering in "blind" or knurled nuts. I was leery of their longevity and for good reason. After 1500 miles they wallowed out the holes and made one of the lower brackets loose.

My solution was simply to weld the lower brackets directly to the frame and its vastly superior to the install methods they advise and works great. However since not everyone is comfortable/set up to MIG welding these on and will rely on the foolish blind nuts I can only give it 3 stars.

by:

Haven't had chance to use yet as I'm waiting on trailer. Product arrived as ordered. For being free shipping it arrived faster than most mail. Will up date when I get chance to use with trailer. Looking forward to do bussiness with ETrailer in future great company. Lots of help, quick to answer questions. Thanks Chuck

I have had the use of this Item for about a year and i give 5 stars . I have pucharsed several item from this company it the past and as usual etrailer is spot on. Installed this hitch in no time. instructions are concise a clear and went on a test drive with truck and trailer. 65 MPH their is very little sway. Just a small amount when an 18 wheeler goes by but that is no problem. Buy it. You will sure like

I purchase a used trailer recently and have made several purchases from etrailer to include a Straight-Line Weight Distribution Hitch (RP 66084), 2 5/16 Ball (19286), RV Generator Plug (CAM 55333), Aqua Hose, sealing trim for roof and side seams etc...

All of the products have arrived on time and are of high quality. The trunnion bar holes on the RP 66084 were missed drilled so I called etrailer(Laser) and he shipped me out replacement bars which arrived sooner than expected along with a return label for the miss-drilled bars.

Products are quality, service is quality and inventory is exceptional.

It is a pleasure doing business with them.

  • Can Strait Line Weight Distribution be Used with Feather Lite Trailer
Reese (manufacturer of the Strait Line) has told me that the use of their weight distribution systems on an aluminum trailer is limited by what the trailer manufacturer states is okay. Since Featherlite has determined that your trailer is fine to use with WD you are totally fine as long as you follow their guidelines for how it should install. Since there's diamond plate on top of your frame and you won't be able to use the included frame clamps that come with the Strait Line you'll need...

Also, if you can get the tongue weight to be right at 10-15 percent the trailer is going to ride the best. While neither are going to completely and totally prevent all sway, you are right that the dual cam systems will be a bit less "stiff" as you put it. If you're looking for the dry tongue weight, it also would likely be listed on this plate/sticker but you could also use a tongue weight scale like the Etrailer # 99044 to determine this. When fully loaded, you'll want to keep the tongue weight to 10-15%...

  • What Setup Change is Required When Using Weight Distribution on New Tow Vehicle
When using a weight distribution system like the Reese Strait Line part # RP66084 on a new vehicle you basically need to run through the entire spring bar tension setup process. I attached a link to this page that has the install instructions with this process outlined as well as a review video that shows it too.

  • Best Weight Distribution Recommendation for Trailer with 8,700 lb Dry Weight
For a trailer with a dry weight of 8,700 lbs the Blue Ox TracPro weight distribution system that would be the best rated for that would be the part # BLU27FR which has a tongue weight range of 1,000-1,300 lbs. Now the best weight distribution and sway control I would recommend for your trailer would be the Reese Strait Line part # RP66084 which has the most effective sway control design that works to prevent sway before it starts. This system has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs.

  • How Loud is the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution System
Noise with a weight distribution hitch isn't completely uncommon because in most cases you're getting metal on metal friction to help reduce or eliminate the sway of your trailer. The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 12,000 lbs GTW, 1,200 lbs TW # FA92-00-1200 is going to be a bit loud for this reason, but I wouldn't say it's unbearably loud. If you're seeking something a bit more quiet then you may want to consider something like the Reese Strait-Line...

  • Availability of Left Hand Friction Sway Control Bar
Since friction sway control bars, like the Reese # 83660, already fit both left and right side manufacturers have not created one that is specifically for the left hand side. You will need to have another Sway Control Tab # 3442 professionally welded onto the Weight Distribution (WD) hitch head that you currently have. As far as replacing the current one that you have, it really just depends on how worn it is. If it is looking like it needs to be replaced or it is not very effective then...

  • What is Difference Between Weight Distribution Tongue Weight and Weight Carrying Tongue Weight
I can help explain the difference between the listing for towing weight and weight distribution towing capacity for you. Let's use the Curt Class IV Trailer Hitch # C14010. This hitch has a towing capacity of 1,000lbs tongue weight and 10,000lbs towing weight. This would be the limits of the hitch when used with only the hitch, ball mount, and ball setup. See first attached picture. You will always be limited to your lowest rated item in your setup which ultimately could be your vehicle,...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System For 2017 Keystone Hideout 27DBS WE Travel Trailer
We have just what you need. To prevent the sag when towing a weight distribution system is what you are in need of. The part # RP66084 would be your best option. It has a tongue weight range that fits your 800 lbs of tongue weight well as it's range is 600-1,200 lbs and features only sway control on market to fight sway before it starts. For a 2 inch ball you would want part # A-90 and for a 2-5/16 inch ball # 19286. For sag from towing a weight distributions system works better than...

  • Best Weight Distribution System with Sway Control for V-Nose Trailer
The best option for installing a weight distribution system on a v-nose trailer would be to use one that installs on the side of the frame rather than clamping around. The best option we have for this with integrated sway control is the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System with Chain Hangers for Reese Weight Distribution Systems part # RP58305. I have attached a list of the Strait-Line Weight Distribution Systems below. The correct one will be based on tongue weight like part # RP66084...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Denali
Good news, I can help you narrow down your search for the right weight distribution system for your needs. The Pro Series systems are more of an entry level, economy brand weight distribution system compared to the Reese systems. I would highly recommend the Reese Stait-Line system # RP66084 that prevents sway before it starts. It uses a dual cam sway control which is the most effective on the market, because it applies constant pressure to realign your trailer behind your tow vehicle....

  • Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution for 2015 Toyota Sequoia and 7500 Pound Jayco Whitehawk
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Trailer tongue weight is usually 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. On the low end, 10 percent of the 5,705 dry weight, we have 570 pounds. On the high end, 15 percent of the gross of 7,500, we have...

  • Reese Weight Distribution Cam Arms Bending With Grand Design Reflection 315RLTS Travel Trailer
Your Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control # RP66084 is not enough hitch for your Grand Design Reflection 315RLTS. According to the information I found the dry tongue weight on your travel trailer is 1,100lbs. By the time you add propane, batteries and your gear you are far over the 1,200lb maximum tongue weight of your hitch. This explains why your Reese Dual Cam High-Performance Sway Control # RP26002 arms are bending. You need two of the Reese Replacement Trunnion...

  • Best Sway Control System for a Keystone Passport 292BH and 2016 Ford F-150
There are a number of different things that can cause a truck/trailer to have excessive sway, even with a sway control system. For starters, this is a common compliant of late model F-150 owner's so that is something you might want to be aware of and most of them all have some sort of sway control. Before you start to throw money at the truck/trailer, you will want to make sure the actual (loaded and ready to tow) tongue weight of your trailer is between 10-15% of it's total weight. This...

  • Why Does 2017 Ford F-150 with EcoBoost have Two Trailer Towing Capacities
The second higher capacity listed on your hitch is the capacity the truck would have if you used a weight distribution system installed on the trailer. A WD system uses spring bar tension between the truck and trailer to redistribute some of the tongue weight up to the front axle of the tow vehicle. This allows the weight of the trailer to basically be better distributed which allows it to have a higher towing capacity. I attached a help article for more info on this, but basically if you...
