Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank (sold separately) and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

Dena was very helpful and knowledgeable on the selection of my weight distribution hitch. I had purchased a thin wall socket, But my buddy had one that I could have, so she made it easy to return the socket. The distribution hitch is perfect for my truck and trailer, it was easy to assemble and with the instruction pamphlet that came with it, it was easy to set up as well.

by:

Packaging was great, delivery time fast, I have towed with hitch now 3 times, total of approximately 1000 miles. My TT is a 38' Jayco 312BHOK, 10k lbs dry weight and 1100lbs tounge. The hitch does as advertised, transfers weight from hitch to front axle and prevents most trailer sway, and quickly corrects the sway that does happen. Hitch is heavy, 150lbs-ish with the 18" shank I also bought. Well made, easy to use instructions and set up. Glad I bought this MADE IN USA product.

by:

This was bought to support an F250 with a 20' BigTex equipment trailer. Prior to buying the hitch, I had a bad experience with my old truck and a non-equalizing hitch, which prompted purchasing this with the new truck. This hitch is outstanding. Very heavy duty, and the load equalizing features are excellent. The sway bars can be difficult to install when less than fully loaded, but can be swapped with different weight bars. All in all a great piece of equipment.

I spend weeks researching different brands of hitches with weight distribution and sway control, for my 30 foot bumper pull RV, before buying one. I read all the reviews and called many manufactures, asking questions about their hitches. A lot of the company's that I called had personal answering the phone that didn't know anything about the product or how they worked (they only took orders) or they sounded like it was a bother to answer my questions. I finally purchased a hitch from ETrailer, it was the EQUAL-I-ZER Weight Distribution w/ 4 Point Sway Control- No Shank- 14,000 lbs TW #EQ37141ET I called the number on their web site and talked to Shawn B, I was impressed not only was she familiar with the company's' products (without putting me on hold and having to look them up) but advised me that I was at the end of the weight capacity for a 12,000 lb GTW, and suggested to go up to the 14,000 GTW and explained why. I have used this hitch for many trips and a lot of miles I waited to write this review so that I could really give it a good test. We live in Texas and have towed our 30 ft RV to Tennessee, Florida, Maryland, and Washington. The hitch has worked great, you don't have to disconnect the sway bars to back up, or when making sharp turns like other brands, and is easy to connect and disconnect (especially since I have an electric tongue jack). It does make strange sounds when you make sharp turns, that worried me at first, but I was expecting it because I had read reviews about this before buying the product. The set up was easy after watching some Videos and reading the instructions. One problem was finding someone to tighten the bolts to the requirements, after three trips to RV shop I found a place. I had informed Shawn on the phone before I ordered the hitch, that my truck was higher than most (came that way from the Factory, a 2001 Ram, 4 wheel drive, Cummings 5.9) and all the kits that I had looked at didn't have a shank that was long enough. Shawn informed me of a hitch (which I bought) that comes without a shank, and suggested buying an extra long 7 inch shank separate, (Item # C17123). Surprisingly buying the hitch without a shank, along with the extra long shank, ended up being a few dollars less, than buying a hitch with a shank. The best part was dealing with a person who knew the company's products, she even sent me an e-mail of the parts with the prices, before I ordered them, and after ordering them she followed up sending me the tracking numbers, and called the day that they were delivered, I really appreciated dealing with her on this order. Installation only took a couple hours (with no help). I would buy this product again, it works the way they said it would.

A great weight distribution and sway control hitch for my 9000 lb trainer. Install was a 3 hour exercise, and tools large enough to work on the head are of course needed (and probably not what many folks have on hand). Getting level and angle right took a couple of tries. But when that was all finished, it's a hitch that hooks up quick and provides superb W/D and sway control, and supports backing up while hitched. Did not notice the squealing noise that lots of folks call out. Fits my needs to a T.

by:

Have not had a chance to tow with the hitch yet but is very stout compared to old hitch and spring bars have a lot more weight to them which will hopefully keep the toyhauler in line. Hitch did come slightly scuffed up due to shipping but is understandable due to its weight and nothing some black spray paint wont fix.

by:

I am using this on my Jayco 38' trailer. I can do 90 mph with the thing on my truck if I had to. If it's not on I can do about 60 without swaying. The hitch works. I have the smaller one for another trailer too.

by:

Product is excellent and installation is a little challenging but the instructions are very helpful and easy to follow. Main difficulty is tightening the hitch ball. It takes a rather expensive thin wall socket to hold the nut properly.

looking forward to taking the camper out soon to test the new hitch set up.

by:

I have used a lower weight rated Equal-i-zer hitch for two years and have been so pleased that I ordered another when I traded for a heavier travel trailer. I barely know my trailer is behind me and am confident pulling under any conditions.

Kirstin D was great to work with, answered my questions and helped with an unusual shipping issue.

I will continue to use etrailer. They are great.

by:

Pulling a Reflection 29 foot travel trailer and needed a bigger hitch. The Equalizer always seem to work and it is my go to hitch. There is a reason it is Trailer Life readers choice winner 5 times straight. etrailer is my go to place for all my towing needs. Fast shipping and great prices It is a win win all the way around.

by:

First time that I have ordered from Etrailer, I'm impressed.
Great price and FAST shipping. Also fantastic hitch system.
The company that makes Equal-I-zer weight distribution kits
recommended Etrailer to me. That says something about
Etrailer's company!

by:

Easy install. First trip of 3.5 hours the hitch performed great. In my opinion the noise that some complain about wasn't bad at all. I did lubricate the friction points on the head. The bottom line is there is going to be some noise with these types of hitches.

by:

Used to pull 13k pound toy hauler , distribution worked great and sway was good , only problem we had was the hitch is very loud to the point we sold it

by:

Very happy with the performance of the equalizer hitch. I like the bar system better than the last hitch I had with chains!

by:

Purchased this 1 year ago for our new TT. Had a 10,000 lb model with previous TT that worked great. This one works as great as last one. I also got the sway bracket jacket and put a dab of grease on head unit, all is quiet.

by:

Recieved all three packages regular shipping within a week. Ordering was done over phone with guidance of super agent Cathy. Making a significant purchase as an Equalizer hitch was much more moe reassuring with pro help. Now to install.

by:

The order arrived quickly, accurately, and works well. Very pleased with the hitch and etrailer support.

by:

Danielle h is very good at her job tell her what you want and you shall receive. I was very picky I have a 6” jacked up 2500 ram on 37” tires she got me the hitch I needed for my camper. It also was supposed to take more time to get and it delivered 5 days early. Thank you Danielle h

by:

Haven't actually used this product yet but have owned one in the past and it worked perfectly. As for etrailer their web sight is very easy to find what you need, prices are compatible with all other providers and delivery of all products are fast.

by:

We have a 28' toy hauler.. with this hitch sway was almost gone even with side wind. This thing is heavy. No more white knuckle towing.

by:

Very happy with it , glad I got the heavy one , most of the time I don't feel it back there. I See many pulling with a smaller setup and I wouldn't want to be them, doesn't look safe.

Still loving it, no issues.

by:

Excellent product...particularly impressed with etrailer customer service and followup.

by:

Extremely well made
The noise is not
an issue when you weigh it against the benefits of the hitch.

by:

Best hitch for the money.

by:

By far one of the best customer service experiences EVER!! We recommend etrailer hands down!

  • Is There a Gen-Y Torsion Shank for Weight Distribution Systems
The product you are looking for is the Gen-Y Torsion Weight Distribution Shank part # 325-GH-1302. This shank has built-in shock absorption and will allow you to attach pretty much any weight distribution system head. I really like the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37141ET but the correct one will need to be based off the trailer's weight. I have attached below a full list of options. I would not have any options for using the Gen-Y Pintle Hook Mounting Plate with a weight...

A properly rated weight distribution (WD) system will keep your trailer and your 2014 Ram 2500 level since it distributes the weight evenly across all of the axles in a towing setup. What you need to do is park your trailer and your Ram on a level surface and then measure from the ground to the bottom of your coupler (with the trailer level) and then from the ground to the top of the inside of your 2-1/2" receiver. Since you have a Ram 2500 you most likely need a shank with a drop. Simply...

These will replace missing spring bars for a 10K GTW/1K TW Equal-i-zer system, but they CANNOT be used to upgrade a lower rated system as the weight distribution head is different and the bars aren't interchangeable. If you're needing to upgrade from a lower rates system, you'll need a new system like # EQ37100ET.

There area few differences between the 1,200 and 1,400 pound Equal-I-zer systems. The heads are different and the spring bars are different. If your tongue weight is over 1,200 pound then the 1,200 pound system is not rated high enough. When calculating tongue weight for weight distribution you go by the total tongue weight. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle....

The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37141ET is my recommendation for a 2021 Ford F-250. It's largely considered the best system on the market due to the integrated four-point sway control. It has a 14,000 lb rating and comes with a pre-torqued 2-5/16" hitch ball.
