Selecting the Best Equalizer System for 28 Foot Trailer

Updated 07/25/2019 | Published 07/23/2019

Question:

Buying a 28’ camper with a tongue weight of 600 pounds, empty camper weight of just under 6,000 pounds. Figure I’ll need the 10,000 pound hitch set up. Might have a couple of dirt bikes in the truck which would weigh about 500 pounds combined. Tow vehicle is a 2019 Ford F-150 Super Crew with 6.5’ bed, 3.5L twin turbo Ecoboost engine with the Max Trailer package. Do you think I would need air shocks in addition to the equalizer system?

Regarding the need for air shocks, you will get the most sway control from a weight distribution system and so I recommend starting with that and if you still have interest in improving things from there, we have a variety of air shock options we are happy to recommend.

Your loaded tongue weight plus the weight added behind your truck's rear axle should drive the selection of the weight distribution system. If that number never exceeds 1,000 pounds then the Equa-li-zer # EQ37100ET is sufficient but beyond that you will want to look at heavier options. Whether the bikes are included is a significant factor there. The Equal-i-zer Item # EQ37120ET or # EQ37141ET good next options. They are both solid 4 point systems providing sway control that is helpful in windy conditions, getting passed by 18 wheelers, or in downhill situations where sway can get uncomfortable.

If you choose to add an air bag kit, the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate Air Helper Springs # AL88268 is confirmed to fit two wheel drive vehicles but there are options if your truck is four wheel drive also.
