Features to know about

Effortless Boat Loading: Two-Speed Gear Mechanism

Loading a hefty boat onto your trailer is no small feat, but with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch’s two-speed gear mechanism, it’s a breeze. This feature lets you switch between high-speed for fast retrieval and low-speed for increased power when heavy pulling is required. This dual-speed functionality is perfect for efficiently loading large boats like your 24' Grady White, ensuring a seamless process on any slope or ramp.

Corrosion-Resistant Construction: Zinc TUFFPLATE Finish

Worried about the wear and tear from harsh weather or marine environments? The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch boasts a Zinc-plated TUFFPLATE finish, offering 3x more corrosion resistance than standard finishes. Lab tests confirm that this robust coating withstands over 500 hours against red rust, making it ideal for outdoor and marine usage, and ensuring your winch stays looking new for longer.

Heavy-Duty Performance: 3,200 lbs Capacity

For those relying on a winch to handle weighty loads, this model provides substantial pulling power with a 3,200 lbs capacity. Whether towing your 11,000 lb boat or securing it against high winds, its extra-heavy duty construction gives you the peace of mind you need. This sturdy winch is perfect for pulling heavy loads onto trailers, and with a high carbon steel gear system, reliability is front and center.

Flexible Hoisting Options: Cable and Strap Compatibility

If you're transitioning from steel cables to polyester straps, or vice-versa, this winch makes the change hassle-free. Its design accommodates a 3/8" cable up to 30 feet, or a 2" strap up to 25 feet, providing versatility no matter your towing preference. This flexibility makes the winch invaluable for changing needs, from waking a PWC to hauling a large cruiser.

Streamlined Installation: Standard Mounting Hole Pattern

Need a new winch but don’t want the hassle of modifying your trailer? The winch’s mounting holes match common trailer dimensions, simplifying the installation process. With a layout that's compatible with previous setups like a Shelby model, upgrading to this winch is straightforward and adapts seamlessly to your trailer configuration.

Simplified Operation: Ergonomic and Secure Handle

Concerned about ease of use on steep ramps? The winch’s ergonomic handle ensures smooth operation, even for solo boaters managing larger vessels. Though designed to be detachable for security, it provides the leverage needed to maneuver your load safely, and stores easily to prevent theft or damage during transit. This thoughtful design continues to make operating your winch both intuitive and secure.

  • Hand Winch Replacement Recommendation for Shelby 5466
We have some very similar winches to the Shelby 5466 that you have but we do not carry Shelby winches any longer. The Shelby is a 2 speed winch with a 2,300 lb capacity so for a very similar winch we have the Dutton Lainson 2 speed winch part # DL15440 which would work great. It has a bit more capacity at 3,200 lbs but that just means it'll crank in your boat even easier. Aside from that the winches are very similar. I attached a link to a review video for this for you to check out as well.

  • What Winches Can Be Used With The Dutton-Lainson Drill Adapter DL6456
Hello John. Dutton-Lainson does make a drill adapter part # DL6456 but this only works with the DLB style of Dutton Lainson winches with the automatic brake, so it will not work with the # DL15440 you mentioned. For a compatible winch take a look at the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch w/ Automatic Brake # DL15721. This will work with the # DL6456 drill adapter.

  • Trailer Winch Recommendation for 26 Foot Long Pontoon Boat
The Dutton-Lainson two speed winch, part # DL15440 would be an excellent choice for a heavier boat like your pontoon. Dutton-Lainson winches offer a good balance between performance and cost. A two speed jack is ideal for getting a heavier boat up onto a trailer, the lower speed works well for getting the boat lined up and started onto the trailer, and the higher gear offers additional mechanical advantage to get the boat pulled up and seated correctly on he trailer. For wire rope you'd...

  • Winch Recommendation for Pontoon Boat
That's a really unusual place for winch to bend/fail. I'd be willing to be the issue is that the angle of the winch's pull is not ideal. What degree is the winch pulling from relative to the winch plate direction? Parallel?

  • Comparing Fulton XLT and Dutton Lainson 2 Speed Winch
The covers of the Fulton XLT part # F142425 are removable with a Torx head wrench. If you are looking for basically the nicest hand winch around this would be the winner. Our customers who have this winch all really like it so I know you will like it as well. The Dutton Lainson part # DL15440 is also a great winch that will work well and may be a better winch for the money. But the XLT is easier to change the direction of the winch and has a protective casing which is also pretty sleek...

  • Dimensions Of Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch Mounting Holes
We don't carry the Shelby 5408 winch, but from what I see they are the same mounting holes as the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive - 3,200 lbs # DL15440. I've attached a picture of those measurements for you.

  • Will the Dutton-Lainson 1802A Bolt Holes Line Up With the 3200A Bolt Holes
The bolt hole spacing as well as the bolt hole pattern is different when you compare the # DL14627 (which is the 1802A) to the # DL15440 (3200A). The overall dimensions differ as well. I am attaching some pictures showing the bolt hole measurements as well as the dimensional drawings of the two different winches for your reference.

  • Recommendation for Replacement Shelby 5470A Winch with Large Drum Storage Capacity
You are correct that Shelby is no longer in business. Based on my research it looks like your Shelby 5470A is a 2,800 pound hand winch. I wasn't able to locate the drum capacity on the 5470A but the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440 that you mentioned can store up to 30 feet of 3/8 inch cable. It does have a very similar design to your existing Shelby winch but also features a slightly higher weight capacity of 3,200 pounds. This is the largest drum capacity hand winch we have available...

  • How Do I Select a Hand Winch for My 8,000 pound Boat Trailer
Finding the right capacity winch for your boat trailer is fairly simple but you have factors that must be taken into consideration. Boat-size-to-winch capacity is generally 2 to 1. With good rollers and short winching distances, you could increase the ratio to 3 to 1. With wooden bunks and long winching distances, reduce the ratio to 1 to 1. Special consideration should be given to pontoon boats and other boats with special hull designs. By my calculations the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch...

  • Replacement Winch Ratchet for Old Winch
We don't have a confirmed fit for any replacement parts on that brand of winch, but if it were me and I wanted to keep the old winch, I'd give the Winch Ratchet Repair Kit by Dutton-Lainson # DL70455 a try. I obviously can't confirm that will work, so if you want to simply ensure you have a working winch then I'd replace it with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 3,200 lbs # DL15440 for example.

  • Recommended Hand Winch for 3500 Lb ChrisCraft Sea Hawk 215
The Dutton-Lainson # DL15440 Two Speed Winch you mentioned should be exactly what you need. As you said, you want to choose a winch whose capacity is at least 50 percent of the weight of your boat. Since the # DL15440 winch has a capacity almost equal to the weight of the boat, it will provide plenty of capacity to spare. Dutton-Lainson makes a great product, the winch should provide years of trouble-free service. I do not believe you need an electric winch, a two speed winch should be...

  • Availability of Hand Winch to Use with 100 Feet of 3/8 Inch Cable
When using 3/8 inch cable, the hand winch we have available with the largest drum capacity is with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL15440. This can handle up to 30 feet of 3/8 inch cable. Since you are looking for a much longer length, I recommend checking out the Fulton High-Performance Trailer Winch # F142421. This winch uses 7/32 inch cable but can store up to 100 feet of it. It features a 3,200 pound capacity and 2 speeds to fit your specific application. I have attached a short...

  • Is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch, # DL15440, Designed for Marine Use With a 2 Inch Winch Strap
Yes, the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, # DL15440, would be a great winch for a boat trailer, especially a larger boat. The TUFFPLATE Finish makes the winch acceptable for marine use and the two speed gearing will help winch the boat in fast until the majority of the load is applied and then the handle can be moved to the lower gear and will give power to finish winching the boat onto the trailer. The correct strap for this winch is the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook,...

  • Replacement Winch Recommendation for Trailer with 4,000 lb Boat
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. Since you have wood bunks and possibly a longer winching distance I would recommend you go with a higher weight rating. It's a good sign your Fulton...

You are correct in saying they don't make hand winches like that anymore. We top out at 3200 lbs with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch with TUFFPLATE Finish, Two Speed with Direct Drive # DL15440 for a manual option. Then Electric comes into play. We only have one winch that is over 7800 lbs and it is the Bulldog Winch Trailer Winch - Wireless Remote - Synthetic Rope - Hawse Fairlead - 12,000 lbs # BDW10040. My recommendation if you want a manual winch is to take apart the one you've...

  • Recommended Hand Winch For 3/8 Wire Cable

  • Replacing A Shelby 5405 Winch On A 1988 Glastron Boat Trailer
I can definitely point you in the right direction of a new winch. Unfortunately Shelby is no longer in business, so a direct replacement is out of the question. That being said we have come across these Shelby 5405 winches before, and have found the Dutton-Lainson # DL15303 to be an extremely similar 1,400 lb winch. This is a single speed zinc plated winch designed for marine use. It can be used with a 1/4' wire rope like the # DL24100, or with a 2" wide trap like the # DL24260. Plus Dutton-Lainson...

  • Recommended Brake Winch For Boat Trailer To Pull 3500lb Boat
You may be able to use the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - Worm Gear - Hex Drive - 2,000 lbs # DL11004 you were looking at to load your 3500lb boat on your boat trailer, but it will come down to how long the winch distance is, and if your trailer has carpeted bunks or roller bunks. The standard rule of the thumb is 2-to-1 boat to winch ratio which would mean the # DL11004 would work up with up to a 4000lb boat. If you have roller bunks and are winching a short distance then the winch would...

I would be happy to help you determine which winch will replace your Shelby 5476 2800lb strap winch, but unfortunately since Shelby went out of business we do not have any way to determine its mounting hole pattern so you will need to measure the winch first. For example the Fulton 2-Speed Trailer Winch - 10" Long Handle - 20' Strap - Zinc - 3,200 lbs # F142424 has the 3200lb capacity and a strap like you were wanting. I am not sure if you were planning on using the 5/8 inch cable you have on your dock, but in case you were you would not be able to since the cable is too thick and its not winch cable that is designed to be wound tightly.
