Is it Okay if Winch Mounting Plate is Larger than Mounting Plate on Trailer

Updated 10/05/2026 | Published 10/01/2026

Question:

I ordered this hand winch and when starting install, noticed the winch base is longer and slightly wider than the mounting plate for my pontoon boat trailer. I am able to align the bolt holes without issue. Will this be an issue with the unit or trailer?

Hey David, welcome back! This is a great question but your winch mounting plate being smaller than the bottom plate of your Dutton Lainson winch part # DL15440 will not be an issue at all. As long as the mounting holes are all lined up and attached like you said they are you are totally fine. What kind of boat do you have?

David - I purchased this winch for my boat 2 years ago. I took a look at mine and the winch base is the same size as the mounting plate. However, my opinion is that it shouldn't matter as long as you can bolt it securely to the mounting plate. I have been extremely happy and satisfied with the performance of this winch for our 21' fiberglass boat. I hope that helps.
