Question:
I have a tandem axle trailer that im looking for parts to rebuild. The axles are older camper axles, dexter 2 3/8 tube, old bearings are 58846 inner bearing 2.562 od and outer bearing lm48548 2.346 od, has 3 leafs 13/4 wide. Wondering if you know the axles weight capacity. Some say its a 2500lb axle, some say its a 3500lb axle? Thanks

Hi Dan; is there a tag on the axle? That would be the only real way for me to identify it for sure. I'm guessing you would have an old metal tag which should have a serial number. You could also check on the axle itself for a serial number engraved on one of the ends closer to the spindle if the tag isn't there. If you add this information in the comments below I will reach out to the manufacturer if they're still around to identify the axle.
Also, # 58846 is a part number corresponding with a grease seal so I'm not sure what bearing that would be without an inner diameter measurement. The # LM48510 is typically found in agricultural hubs. One way or another I would say you're looking at a complete replacement since parts won't be available.
If you can't find any information on the axle I would choose the higher capacity for a replacement just to be safe. Also, the 2-3/8" diameter typically means it is a 3,500 lb axle so if I had to guess I would say that is the capacity. To find the right replacement you will need the hub face measurement off of the axle. If you get me that serial number I can probably find the length with the capacity, otherwise you will have to get out the tape measure.
If you have an 89" axle you can use the # e38GR or for a 95" axle the # e68GR. These are the only lengths we carry. If the spring seat measurement doesn't match you will also need to weld-on # TRSS238 to match your current spring seat measurement. You could also use the universal # ASR3500S06 which fits any trailer width and replaces/upgrades the suspension.
If you want replacement leaf springs you will also have to measure the length. You can use the spring eye to spring eye measurement or the flat measurement as outlined in the help article attached below. We have the following lengths available for a 3,500 lb axle leaf spring:
-3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 23-1/8" Long # e59SR
-4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/8" Long # e54SR
-4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 3,500-lb Trailer Axles - 27" Long # e97SR
