Hello James, thanks for reaching out. I can provide some rough guidelines for you, but there is not a "set in stone" hanger spacing for a 27" leaf spring like part # e97SR.

Generally, for a single axle setup, your hanger spacing for a 27" spring would be between 25-1/4" and 26-1/2". I can't give you an exact number because the hanger spacing also depends on what size shackle straps and hangers you are using. Even if we knew all that, we can still only provide rough guidelines to go by. The only way to get the correct spacing for any given trailer will be to do a mockup of everything, then adjust as needed.

The picture below will show you an example of what a single axle suspension system should look like. I know its a bit weird to just go off of what things look like, but that is how its done.

Leave a reply below with any other questions or comments and I will get back to you.

Hey James, how did your mockup go with the 27-inch spring and hanger spacing? Knowing what final distance worked for you could really help others setting up a similar trailer.

@JesseM I used the 27" leaf springs (e97sr) for a canoe trailer build. Brackets are 3 1/4" (F) and 7/8" (R). Shackles are Dexter K71-358-00; 3 1/8" on center (OC). The axel is 3.5k. The spacing on the brackets are 26 1/2 on center and the resting (mounted) distance of the eyes of the springs are 27 3/8" on center. This set up gives the shackle a slight canter allowing it to absorb bumps in the road and a 2 7/8" max travel from the axel to the frame. The axle is mounted 60/40 on a 10' long box with a 7.5' length tongue (Canoe trailer). Trailer holds 4 canoes and gear for 9 (my BWCA edition). Road tested with gear: The trailer in mounted level for towing. Pulling the trailer is smooth without any side-to-side wiggle. The trailer handles bumps and dips without residual bouncing, although a bit stiff given the 3.5k setup for relatively light load expectation. Traveling at constant speed on a flat road one could almost forget they are pulling this trailer.

@JamesE Thanks so much for the detailed breakdown, James — that’s incredibly helpful information. Sounds like the setup is performing really well, and your notes on spring spacing, shackle angle, and ride quality will be a great reference for others planning similar builds. Feel free to come back anytime you need anything!
