Video Transcript for TruRyde Trailer Suspension TRSS238 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at this spring seat for typical 3,500 pound round trailer axles with a 2 3/8" diameter. The spring seat is a necessary component of your trailer suspension system when mounted with a 1 3/4" or 2" wide leaf spring. It adds extra support and provides proper positioning for the axle. It's made from a durable steel construction. It would weld onto a 2 3/8" diameter axle which is a typical 3,500 pound axle. It sits on top of a 1 3/4" or 2" side leaf spring. The cutout on the flat side would surround the raised knob on the leaf spring to prevent turning in or shifting.

It simply provides that extra support and secure positioning for the trailer axle. Please note that two spring seats are required for each axle. A few measurements to go over with you real quick starting with the overall length. It's going to give us a measurement of 4" long. Overall width, it's going to measure about 1 7/8" wide. Height is about 1 1/4" tall, and this opening right here of this rounded area at the widest point, that's going to give us a measurement of about 2 1/8".

That's going to do it for today's look at the spring seat for typical 3,500 pound round trailer axles with a 2 3/8" diameter.

I used the seats to reposition my springs from the lying under the axle of my TT to sitting on top of the axle. This gave me about 4.5 in of additional much needed ground clearance. The cut and sizing of the seats was spot on and made for and easy axle flip. I opted to use these and the U-bolt and plate kit instead of the Dexter spring over kit and saved about $50. I did the entire job start to finish in 3 hours. One thing to note is that if you are looking to flip the position of your axles from the top to the bottom like I did. You are also going to have to lengthen your brake lines also. 78155

Ask the Experts about this TruRyde Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

  • Where on Axle Should Spring Seats Be Welded On
The bend in an axle (the top of the arch) should be at the top of the axle so that as the trailer load is placed on the axle it flattens out. The spring seats # TRSS238 should be welded to the underside as shown in the linked diagram.

  • Do Trailer Axle Spring Seats Weld to Axles
You need to weld the spring seats like the part # TRSS238 that you referenced to the axle tubes.

  • When Moving Leaf Spring Above Axle Can U-Bolts be Reused
If your U-bolts are still in good shape you could reuse them. You would just need a new spring seat designed for your diameter axle. I attached a link to a page that has all of the spring seats we carry. If you select your axle diameter from the filters on the page the correct one will be listed.

  • Do Old Spring Seats have to be Removed to Move Springs On Top of Trailer Axle
You do not have to remove the old spring seats unless they cause a clearance issue. But keep in mind that the new spring seats will have to be welded to the axle. Welding should be performed by a qualified professional with experience working on trailers. If you were to use an over-under conversion kit, # K71-384-00, you would not have to do any welding.

  • How To Choose Correct 3,500 Lb Axle for Slipper Spring Setup
In order to determine which axle is correct for your trailer we need to find out what your hub face (HF) and spring center (SC) measurements are. If you take a look at the photo I have attached for you that should then help with obtaining the above two measurements. The most important thing we need to look for is the hub face as the spring center can then be moved (within a range) if we need to. I have attached a list of the 3,500 lb axles we offer in the varying hub face and spring center...

  • Recommended Drop Axle for Trailer With 80 Inch Spring Center
The best option we have for you is going to be with the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with 4" Drop E-Z Lube Spindles part # 7685269 which has a 3,500 lb weight capacity. This will allow the tires to extend out past your load and will provide you with the low load height you will need. The spring center spacing on this axle is set at 80" but if this does not match what you have on your trailer now then you can always move them to where you need them with part # TRSS238. The leaf springs will...

The Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with 4" Drop E-Z Lube Spindles part # 8327812 measures 89" long between each hub face and 74" long between each spring center. It is not offered with 89" between each hub face and 70-1/2" long between each spring center because the spring seats can be moved. The spring seats for this axle can be moved to a minimum of 75" apart and a maximum of 71" apart. That does make sense. We don't have an exact replacement for your application but if you check out the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with 4" Drop E-Z Lube Spindles # 7685269 you can see that it has 95" hub-face and 80" spring-center measurements. Since the hub-face and spring-center measurements can vary from trailer to trailer and yours are fairly close to one that we carry (we only carry a few of the very popular options) I wouldn't say that's abnormal. Even though the spring-center of...

  • Is there a Replacement Dexter Axle that Fits in Place of a 3,500 Pound Lippert Axle
Is your axle actually bent or are you just seeing the bow that is supposed to be in the axle? A beam style trailer axle has a bow in it so the center of the axle is higher than either of the ends. When weight is on the axle it straightens out. This is part of how it gets its capacity. So if that is what you are seeing it is normal. If it is bent from damage or was overloaded then you would definitely want to replace the axle.
