Updated 01/27/2026 | Published 08/26/2024

Question:

I have a 2022 Lance 2185. GVWR 7000 using tandem 3900 lb axles. To use Roadmaster Comfort ride, Im told axles needs to be replaced with 5.2K. Will this create a rough ride with this light of a trailer?

Hey David,

If your axles are 2-3/8" in diameter then you could just use the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit w/ Shock Absorbers # RM82MR instead. Swapping out to heavier axles would likely give you uneven tire wear and suspension wear because the axle isn't bearing enough weight to straighten out.

Every axle has a slight bend upwards in the middle and when weight is added straightens out. Without enough weight compressing the axle the tires will start to wear on the outside edges instead of evenly wearing across the tread so I wouldn't recommend swapping to a higher capacity axle.

You'll likely need to replace the u-bolts with longer ones # SP01-040 (5-1/2" length) in order to fit the shock mounting brackets. When doing the changeover you can also swap the leaf springs to the top of the axle by welding on some new spring seats # TRSS238 on the top of the axle.

Hey David, how did things go with the Roadmaster Comfort Ride kit for your Lance 2185? Did the setup with the 3.5K suspension give you the smoother ride you were hoping for? Your update could make it easier for others working with similar trailer weights.
