Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2017 Audi Q5

Today on our 2017 Audi Q5, we're going to take a look at, and also show you how to install, the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver. This offers the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. Its part number is 75940. Here's what the hitch is going to look like installed on our Q5. As you can see, you're not going to be adding a whole lot to the rear appearance of the vehicle, still going to maintain the really nice look of it. As you can see, we've completely removed the panel located on the underside here. What this does is it eliminates the need for us to cut any of our fascia here on the rear of the vehicle.

If we ever decide to take the hitch off, we can put it right back in place and nobody will be any of the wiser. Another thing to keep in mind with the appearance of the hitch is that it's going to be slightly recessed inside the edge of our bumper, so we're not going to have anything sticking out of the rear of the vehicle, and also we're not going to have to worry about bumping our knee or a shin on it as we walk by. Now, this is a class three hitch, so it has the two inch by two inch receiver tube opening. This is going to work out really well for just about any application you can imagine. The two inch by two inch is extremely versatile. You'll see the reinforcement collar around the end here, has a little bit of a rounded look to it. You'll see the plate style safety chain connection points are going to come down the side.

There's plenty of room there for whatever size chain you might need to connect. When securing our accessories, we always want to use the pin hole located closest to the front of the vehicle. It's the larger of the two, 5/8th of an inch in diameter, and we want to choose class three accessories. You will notice we've got a good amount of space all the way around the hole there. Whether you're going to use just a pin and clip, maybe a locking hitch pin or even an anti-rattle device should be plenty of room to make that work. The smaller hole is only going to be used when using the J-Pin Stabilization System. Now, the hitch is going to offer a 750 pound tongue weight rating.

That would be the maximum downward force that we can put here at the receiver tube opening. It's going to give us a gross trailer weight rating of 5,000 pounds. That would be the combined weight of your trailer and anything that you we're to load up on it. Now, you do want to check the Q5's owner manual. You want to see what its rated for, and use whichever of those numbers are the lowest. Now, a couple of measurements you'll find helpful when it comes time to select your ball mount bike rack or hitch cargo carrier will be from the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening.

We're going to have about 15 inches. Then from the center of our hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of our bumper, it's about three and a half. Now, there are several pieces here in the rear of the vehicle that we're going to need to take out. You want to take out any floor coverings, and then we'll start by removing the center hatch here. We're also going to take off the scuff panel. You'll want to come to this front edge and lift up on it to release those clips, and then we'll lift straight up. Now, we're going to work our way from the outside edge across releasing the clips as we go. In here, there's going to be a little connector. You need to pull both little tabs in, separate that, we'll set this aside. Now from the center latch here on each side, you've got one right here where this angle starts out, and another one right in here where this angle comes in. It's going to be a recessed nut inside of here. You'll see we've got an extension and a 10 millimeter socket. Just going to slide that in and then get those removed. This is what they're going to look like. Now, the nuts here can be pretty hard to get out sometimes. If you don't have a magnet, you can just put a piece of shop towel in your socket before you push it on there. You'll see that'll grip it so you can pull it out pretty easily. We'll use the same process when we put it in to get it started. Now on each side, this is the driver's side, we're going to have these two fastening tie down points. There's two screws underneath, these you'll need a T30 Torx bit for. See inaudible 00:04:07 pretty short. We're going to remove both of these here on the driver's side, and the two on the passenger side as well. Now, our driver's side panel, we'll just turn that, lift straight up on that to remove it. Then we just unbolt the Ds 00:04:29, we're going to lift up on these as well. We can set both of those aside, driver and passenger side. Now behind this panel, we'll see the air compressor for the spare, need to get that out of the way. Also going to have this foam keeper here. Now it's got a couple of push fasteners. You just need to spin those counter-clockwise and they're going to come off there. If they're hard to turn, you can use a screwdriver and just insert it in one of those holes and turn it. Just have two of them, then we'll get this out of the way. Now underneath, this is right where the compressor just was right here, towards the rear of the vehicle, you'll see a silver stud here. It also has a 10 millimeter nut on it we'll need to remove. The passenger side panel, it doesn't have a release or anything. We're just going to start pulling out on it, and then you'll unplug this little 12 volt outlet here, just like that. We'll set it aside. Now once we have that passenger panel off, you'll see our fuse panel here. We look down, there's going to be a 10 millimeter nut right down there that connects that panel to the floor. Let's remove that. You see that's going to be a lock nut with a washer on. Now, we'll pull the backside of our fusebox up off that stud and then just slide it towards the middle of the car. We can pull that up and out of the way. That'll allow us to gain access to the nut that holds the fascia on on this side, so the exact same spot as it was on the driver's side just in behind that panel. You see that's where that stud was that holds down the fusebox just right towards the back of the car from there. Now, we're here in the driver's side wheel well area. This is the rear driver's tire. This is the back where it eventually goes down and turns under the vehicle. There are four torque 00:06:35 screws here. We've got one located right here and if we just follow this line down, we'll have two, three and four. These are going to be the same on both sides. We want to take all four of those out. These take a T25 Torx bit. Once you get them started, you probably just take them out by hand. Now, we can go do the same thing on the passenger side. Now right here in the middle of the vehicle, underneath the rear, there are two more torque 00:07:03 screws, the same T25 bit. We get both of these removed as well. Now these are the two located closest to the front of the vehicle. You're not looking at these, these are just a fascia cover here. We want it to actually be the one that connects it to the inaudible 00:07:18. Once we have these out, we'll grab an extra set of hands and start getting this fascia off. Now, we're going to begin pulling out on each corner of our fascia. We're going to work that around the edge and take it off. Now as we start to remove it, we have to remember to undo any electrical connections that might be in there. Now right up here, we're going to see two plugs. This is up from where that fuse panel was. We want to separate these. Instead of making all the connections on the back of the bumper, instead of separating those, if we separate the two of these, we can set our fascia aside. Now on the black clip here, you've got the two clips on each side to remove. Right, now it's time to set this fascia aside somewhere safe. Now at that rear fastening point that had that silver tie down on it, if you look just below that bracket, there are going to be two bolts. It's time to get those taken out. You'll need a 15 millimeter socket. We're going to do this here on the driver's side and on the passenger's side. At that point, we'll pull straight out on that bumper core and we'll set it aside. Now it's time to slide our hitch right in where we removed the bumper from. As we do it, we'll just want to line up the holes in the hitch with the holes that are already existing. You just bring that in, line up those slots just like that. Do that on both sides, we put those brackets back in place. Now once we get these studs up, we want to go around and torque each one down to the specifications listed in our instructions. Now in the bottom of our fascia, you're going to see two more little torque 00:09:33 screws. That's holding that cover on. Let's get those out of the way before we replace it. Now, we'll just pop that off to remove it. Now, we're going to take the end of the loom there with our dual plugs, those are going to slide back in. We'll grab them from the inside and pull through, that'll help us seat that grommet. I'm just going to push this in all the way around, make sure it seats in there just like it did when we removed it. Just like that. Now with that grommet seated where we want it, let's get the fascia slid back on. Now as we do this, we want to allow the hitch to come through the opening down here at the bottom. Then, of course, we'll line up the fascia holes here, remember the four of them we had going across, then just gently slide in. At this point, we're pretty much going to reverse the process of what we did to remove the fascia with one exception, and that being I like to get the four fascia bolts here started and secured initially. That way, I know my fascia is going to be held in place, the same strategy we used before, we talked about just keeping that little piece of shop towel in there. Then, we can put our plugs back in position. This one, we'll have to find the hole we brought it out of. Just push that back in, and then reattach each connector. Now once you have them in there, give them a little pull to make sure they're firmly connected. Then we're ready to put our fusebox back in place. Now, we'll put our side cover back in place. Remember we want to plug our 12 volt power outlet back in. Then we want to put our foam pad back in that we store the air compressor in. Push down on those keepers and that'll hold it in place for us. Now, we'll set our compressor back in. We'll want to strap it back in place. Now, we'll get our panel put back on with scuff panel back here, remember our little connector fuse was equipped 00:12:14. Once that's in, you're going to pull up this weather stripping all the way across so it just lays back over the top. Right, now with everything back in place, our hitch will be ready for use. That's going to complete our installation of the Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number 75940, on our 2017 Audi Q5.

The product arrived in time, with good instructions for installation, and adequately packaged. The installation of the hitch was much easier than I anticipated, and the videos and photographic steps were easy to follow. I completed the hitch install over a few hours by myself, and it's holding up well to carry my bike rack! Thank you for providing a great resource and making this process easy for those who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on installation and labor fees. Note on installation for the 2017 Audi Q5: for those not familiar with tools at all, the M16 wrench socket should be a 6-point, short socket, and the M10 should be a 6-point, long socket in order to reach the appropriate nuts and bolts within the car. The installation paper also refers to tightening an M6 to a certain ft-lb, but this should refer to the M16...believe it's a typo. 644172

This is the hitch to buy if you have this vehicle. It replaces the bumper behind the bumper fascia and needs no extra hardware. It becomes part of the frame. Can't imagine a more durable and clean way to do this. You will need a partner to help out when removing the fascia and it's probably more involved than other installations, but it's worth it. 605831

It's well built heavy duty and seems like it can handle the specified load of 5000 pounds although I haven't towed anything with it just yet. It has a nice powder coat finish and it fitted nicely in my Audi Q5. It took me 3 hours to install. Watched the video twice before making an attempt to install and referee to it agin during the process of installation. 420179

Well, the EZ hitch for the 2013 Q5 arrived on time and in good condition. All the parts ordered were in the box. Now it's on to installing said hitch following the EXCELLENT detailed procedures in the video. 338274

I only used the hitch one time - to tow a 5x8 covered trailer from Houston to Austin. The hitch perfromed flawlessly, no issues whatsoever. However since I needed a larger covered trailer I would up selling the Q5 and buying an F250 diesel to haul the new 6X12 covered trailer.

Product was great. I follow the video it was pretty good except they cut some parts where the bumper holds under the wheel well plastic bracket . Also i didnt need to remove the harness from all the stuff on rear bumper I just got something to hold bumper on the side and didn't disconnect any clips . took me 1hr 45 mins to do . 367619

Just finished installing the hitch on 2016 Q5, whole job with a friend took about an hour. Watch the video a few times and it's pretty straightforward. I followed "Stanley's" recommendation and didn't disconnect wiring harnesses from the bumper, I just put bumper to the side and supported it to not put strain on wiring. My Q5 has access panel (like the video) that the receiver fits through, so no cutting and very clean looking install. Very pleased! 391187

The hitch was shipped promptly and arrived in perfect condition. The product is extremely well made and undoubtedly hold up to whatever I can dish out. I would have provided 5 stars except the installation instructions and video were not accurate for my vehicle. If I owned an Audi Q5 then I would have been dialed in. However, the process for the Macan is different. The location of the bumper fascia bolts is different and removing the compressor and fuse panel were unnecessary. Otherwise, the fit is excellent. I love how the receiver sits recessed from the rear bumper. My ankles will appreciate it. 413213

Thanks for following up. I have a question about my Drawtite 2 hitch. When I install my Kuat bike rack and tighten down the hand screw which pushes the ball outward at the top right corner the rack tilts to the left. I purchased and installed a second Drawtite 2 hitch for my Acura MDX. It does the same thing. However, this tilting does not happen on my Toyota factory hitch. It appears as though the opening is larger on my Drawtite hitches by about 1 mm or a bit more. What can be done to prevent this tilting? Thank you for your help.

Pupsport - 07/31/2018

The Toyota OEM hitches are known to have a larger collar on them and the outer diameter of the receiver portion may be a little bit larger, therefore your hitch pin on your Kuat bike rack may be a tighter fit then on your Draw-Tite receivers. I have spoken with my contacts at Kuat when the anti wobble device on their bike racks is activated it is not uncommon for the bike rack to shift to the left a bit. To resolve this issue they recommend a second u-bolt style anti-wobble device like the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061

Super cheap option for adding the flexibility to carry bikes. The install was also very easy with the help of the video. The finish isn't the strongest as it is wearing away and starting to rust after not a lot of use. I use it about 1x/month and am very careful with installing the bike rack to not chip the surface. Regardless of that, I am happy for the price paid. 450386

I just installed one of your hitches on my 2016 Porsche Macan S. I am very happy with the quality of the hitch. I want to provide some feedback that may be useful for new customers. Macan S vs Audi SQ5 Instruction differences: Step 3. The Macan requires 2 plastic 10 mm bolts be removed to allow for the trim panel to be removed. Step 4. N/A for the Macan S Step 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are N/A for the Macan s Step 15. There are 4 Torx screws that need to be removed from the inner fender liner and an additional 4 Torx screws under the inner fender liner that need to be removed. Step 17. Not sure what the NOTE applied to. I didn't see this on my Macan S I found it easiest to separate the rear diffuser / skid plate from the bumper when completing the task of trimming the hole for the hitch. I also found it easier to install the diffuser / skid plate after the bumper was installed. 360083

I purchased the Draw Tite hitch for my Audi Q5 2014 and it was a perfect fit.. I was worried at first when I didn’t see any bolts packaged but it’s not needed because you use the existing bolts from the frame assembly on the car. The printed instructions were clear and easy to follow but the video was spot on. I did have trouble getting the bumper back on but found out that the hitch needed to be pushed in a little more. I suggest putting the hitch in place to line up the bolt holes and loosely fit the bolts. Once the bolts are screwed in place then push the hitch in after far as possible. This will allow clearance to put the bumper back on. 489523

2015 Audi SQ5. Price was great. Received it in CA in 4 business days for free. Could not have even attempted it without the video but glad I did. I've heard the dealer cost is about $800 and I don't trust anyone else to do it. Hardest part by far was disconnecting the electrical connections and wiring harness for the bumper cover. Some of them were very stingy to disconnect. Probably took 1.5 hours just for that. Just stay with it and you start to figure it out. It took about 3.5 hours total plus another 2 hours to cut the lower bumper cowl which is optional but looks great. It really tucks up nicely behind the bumper cover. You almost don't even notice it. With the cowl cut with a jig saw it looks better than the factory job. I made the cuts tight on the receiver and my straight hitch pin still fits. If you had a locking pin you would either have to remove the cowl plate when towing or cut more of the plate for room. I also did not install light connections. I will only use this for motorcycle and bicycle transport so no lights required. See pics. 355769

This fit our 2015 Audi Q5 perfect. The instructions and video from etrailer were spot on. Great job! Only one caveat, in the video it says when you remove bumper you have to disconnect all the plugs individually. Actually there's a grommet on the right rear of the car that has a single plug on the inside that can be removed and pulled through. See photos. Makes it a tiny bit easier. 544598

The install was easier than I expected and I'm not normally comfortable working on cars. Took me about 90 minutes. I greatly appreciated the video installation tutorial so that I knew exactly what I was getting into. I didn't need to disconnect the wires after I removed the fascia since there was enough wire to lean it against a wall in my garage. The only thing that threw me off was I couldn't find the instructions where there was apparently specifications for the torque wrench. The instruction booklet was hidden inside the receiver port which was wrapped in plastic wrap. I didn't unwrap until after I was done with the install. It would have been nice to see an indication that the instructions were inside there. 634429

As I stated in my first review, the hitch itself was great, so long as 1) You do not follow the instructions provided by eTrailer.com. Those instructions result in permanent damage to the tabs that connect the plastic bumper cover to the rear fenders. I special tool is needed to disengage those tabs without breakage. 2) You don't want to haul a trailer. I would not recommend this hitch to any Audi owner who wants to haul a trailer because the after-market wiring harness simply doesn't provide all the seamless functionality of the OEM hitch and built-in wiring system (i.e. lights, braking and needed alterations to driving characteristics) without risk of damaging the OEM wiring system when you patch into it. Consequently, I have the eTrailer hitch sitting in my garage because I discovered these things after I bought it. If you can afford an Audi, you can definitely afford the $1600 for the Audi install. Over the life of the car and hauling my new Oliver Travel Trailer, it was absolutely worth doing it right through my Audi Dealer. 616535

Etrailer has a great web site for ordering, the hitch came quickly and was an easy install, partly because of the great install video etrailer has available for their customers to view. What I like about this hitch over the other one that will fit this year and make of vehicle, is that it looks like the factory hitch. 594416

Product arrived much quicker than expected albeit somewhat roughed up cosmetically by FedEx. Installation done by a local mechanic shop charging 1.5 hours of labor. Total cost is less than half the price of the part alone from Audi. I'm very pleased with the quality and fit. Only caution is that the hitch is very rugged and therefore adds about 40# to your vehicle weight above the non-hitch aluminum frame piece it replaces. 592425

Installed on 2017 Audi Q5 in a couple hours. I found it fairly easy with the only challenges being removal and reattaching car trim. I t is not difficult if you understand the basics on how vehicles are put together but it does take patience. Recommendations: purchase nylon trim removal tools...they are inexpensive and very handy. 557716

The box arrived today. This is the second box of hitches that arrived in very bad shape. It was just about ready to come apart. But all of the parts were still inside the box and fortunately arrived undamaged with no paint scratched off. The instructional videos for installing the Draw-Tite on the Audi Q5 were really useful. I spent yesterday taking apart the back end of the car. And it took me a matter of minutes to install the hitch. I believe this is a very sturdy hitch design. Cutting a hole in the access panel is a nice touch--looks like a factory job. 530052

The hitch fits the SQ5 perfectly. Install was not difficult. Removing and installing the bumper skin is the most difficult part. I installed solo with the help of two cardboard boxes to hold the bumper at right height as I fastened all the points. 522032

Hitch--5 stars. Instructions for the Porsche Macan--2 stars. The removal of the rear bumper cover on the Porsche is not the same as the Audi Q5, thus leaving one to an "Easter egg hunt" for the screw locations not noted in the Q5 instructions. Now that I've done it, I could probably remove the cover in 15 min knowing the locations of the fasteners. The hitch itself is very solid, and tucks under the car well. 457385

2014 Audi SQ5

I installed the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver on my 2014 SQ5 and am very pleased. It took me and a friend roughly 4-5 hours to get it integrated, though about an hour and a half was us running back and forth to the auto parts store for tools. If you have an SQ5, make sure you have metric deep sockets, as well as a range of Torx bits. Fits exactly in place of the stock aluminum bumper, it's barely noticeable from the rear. I towed a 6X12 flatbed trailer with 3 motorcycles this weekend and no issues so far. I paired this purchase with Draw-Tite QSP Trailer Hitch Silencer and Cover, ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector and Installation Kit, Curt LED 4-Way Flat Connector Tester, Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches - 7,500 lbs. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have a 2014 SQ5 and use the ZCI wiring harness, you'll need to connect the following wires (and make sure to have the tailgate closed when testing): Driver Side Black w/ Blue Wire to Lights Grey w/ White Wire to Left Turn Signal Passenger Side Grey w/ White Wire to Right Turn Signal Took me a few hours to figure it out and troubleshoot, hopefully this helps! 451962

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Availability of a Trailer Hitch Receiver for a 2018 Audi SQ5
  • I have a solution for you, however, the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch, # 75940, will not work on the 2018 Audi SQ5. The Draw-Tite Class III Max Frame Trailer Receiver Hitch, # 76183, is the confirmed hitch for the 2018 Audi SQ5. This Draw-Tite hitch is designed to fit your Audi with no drilling required to install on the frame of the vehicle. This hitch has a 2 x 2 inch receiver opening and has a 750 lbs tongue weight capacity. Installation of the this hitch will require the...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2017 Audi Q5
  • We do offer a couple custom fit Class III trailer hitches confirmed to fit your 2017 Audi Q5. I recommend the Curt Class III Round Tube Receiver Hitch # C13136 because of its easier installation process when compared to the Draw-Tite alternative # 75940. The Curt Hitch has a 750 pound tongue weight capacity and a 5,000 pound towing weight capacity. I recommend also checking your vehicle's weight capacities as listed in the owner's manual, as this will likely be the limiting factor. This...

  • The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # 75940 has not yet been tested on a 2018 Porsche Macan, so I can't confirm that fit. Instead I recommend the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" # C13136 which has been tested and confirmed to fit your 2018 Porsche Macan. The fit is also compatible with the similar Audi Q5, so I've attached a photo and a video of that installation to assist. The trunk pan underneath your vehicle will...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Towing Setup for 2017 Audi Q5
  • Good news, I can help you find the right trailer hitch for your 2017 Audi Q5. Since the manufacture confirmed that there is no change in the design of the frame from 2016 to 2017 then yes, the Curt trailer hitch # C13136 would also carry over. In my research I did find that Draw-Tite has confirmed the # 75940 to fit the 2017 Audi Q5, this was the same hitch that fit the 2016 model. It is also the hitch I recommend for your Q5 over the Curt hitch because per Curt's warranty you will...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver and Other Parts to Tow a Trailer with a 2014 Audi Q5
  • Between the Curt # C13136 and Draw-Tite # 75940 trailer hitch receivers for the 2014 Audi Q5 the Draw-Tite has more ground clearance. The Draw-Tite installs into the bumper behind a removable piece of fascia that is on the Q5. If this piece of fascia is not on your model then the fascia will need to be cut. The Curt, on the other hand, installs underneath the bumper. So the entire cross beam of the hitch receiver is visible. On the Draw-Tite all you see if the receiver opening and...

  • Difficulty of Installing a Trailer Hitch on a 2017 Porsche Macan with Backup camera
  • For either of the trailer hitches for your 2017 Porsche Macan with backup camera, # C13136 or # 75940, rear fascia trimming is required. Between the 2 hitch # C13136 is slightly easier to install (takes less time). There are under body panels that will need to be loosened or removed for installation. For the specifics I have included links to the instructions for you. A body shop might not be the best choice for a professional installation but a repair shop or trusted mechanic friend...

We do have hitches that will fit the 2019 Subaru Outback but the Draw-Tite hitch for the Audi will not fit. I recommend Draw-Tite part # 76227 instead. Curt issues the statement about a strap like part # 18050 as a precaution and to help relieve some of the stress on the back of a vehicle when using any non-towing accessory. Also it's a bit more concealed as well so it's easier on the eyes. Even though we haven't had a chance to install this trailer hitch on a 2015 model the measurement should be really close to that if not the exact same.
