Braking Output

Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to go as high as you can without the trailer brakes locking up.

Use the arrow buttons on the front of the module to set the output.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The boost setting controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, decrease the setting.

Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set braking output. So instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.

Boost Levels:

Approximate Gross Trailer Weight Boost Level Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW B1 13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW B1 or B2 13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW B2 or B3* 25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW B3* 25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

Manual Override

To engage the manual override, twist the rotary-style lever from right to left. This will activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights independently of your vehicle, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.

Save Your Settings in Multiple Profiles

The P3 is able to store your settings in multiple profiles so that you can have them ready to go for different trailers and drivers. Even the display is super customizable: you can change the screen color, brightness, and language to make it easy to use.

Safety Features

The Prodigy P3 offers advanced safety features to prevent damage to various components of your towing setup.

-Integrated reverse battery protection shields the brake controller and your trailer's breakaway system from shorts.

-When the P3 is not in use, it draws only 3.6 milliamps, minimizing drain on your vehicle's battery.

-Any time your vehicle and trailer are at a standstill with the brakes applied for more than 5 seconds, the hold feature will kick on and reduce power to just 25 percent. This will keep your trailer in place without your brakes overheating.

Installing the Tekonsha P3

Installing the P3 is incredibly simple. You'll mount the bracket to your dashboard then mount the unit to the bracket. Plug the custom harness into your vehicle and into the unit. Done!

Keep in mind that the P3 must be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel to work correctly.

Correct P3 mounting 360-Degree P3 mounting

With a replacement wiring harness (sold separately) and replacement bracket (TK5906 - sold separately), you can even transfer the Prodigy P3 to another vehicle.

Note: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

What is proportional Braking

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle and trailer.

The Prodigy P3 uses an internal inertia sensor to detect how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Choosing Between Tekonsha Brake Controllers

When it comes to choosing a brake controller, a lot of them are gonna look very much the same. And two of them that I really like are from Tekonsha. We have the Prodigy P2 and the Prodigy P3. So, they look very similar, but they do have quite a few differences and we're hoping to break that down, that way you can decide which one's best for you. Here we have our P3 installed and really it comes down to it has more bells and whistles than the P2, otherwise it's pretty much the same controller. The P3 does have a nicer/easier to use display.

It's a little bit more user friendly. It uses some icons here that, you know, show you a trailer and that way you know pretty quickly what boost level you're at and it's really easy to read. It's a nice digital display and you can change a lot of that. Also, it has a little bit more diagnostics. So as far as, instead of just having error code with the P2, this one will actually tell you exactly what it is and there's a host of diagnostics so that way you can look at it.

You won't have to troubleshoot the code by looking at the owner's manual. It'll tell you right away what's happening. The P3 is also really nice if you have a bunch of trailers in your fleet, you can set up presets, up to five of 'em, and that way when you hook up to said trailer, you can select that and it's gonna be preset to the boost settings and also the gain that you may have dialed in. That way you just hook up and you'll be ready to go. Multiple trailer settings are gonna be nice, especially if you have a work truck and you're hooking up to a bunch of different trailers, you can get that dialed in, but if you tow the same trailer over and over, or you know that you're only gonna have one trailer long term or maybe two, that's really not gonna be a function that is necessary.

Now with the P2 installed, you can see right away that the display is obviously not as fancy as the P3, but you again have all the same functionality. There are less buttons, so that kind of keeps it simple. If you just need a brake controller, this is a great option. You still have your power knob, you have your boost button, and you still have essentially the same manual override, which I do like on the Tekonshas, you have a nice modulation here. But really when it boils down to it, they are very, very similar.

The size is gonna be almost identical. They're gonna mount up the same, they're gonna install the same. Again, you have that same proportional here. They both work for one to four axles. They're both proportional. So pretty much the same thing, just more bells and whistles on the P3. If it's something that you're gonna wanna keep for a long time on your vehicle, a P3 is pretty sharp. I do like the display, and something to think about too, you can always take a brake controller from one vehicle to the next, so, but if you're just need to tow a trailer and you need a brake controller, P2 you're not gonna go wrong with. I just like the fact that there is diagnostics that are a little bit more straightforward with the P3. And if you're worried about if it's gonna work with your trailer, they're both gonna work with the same kinds of trailers. You can have electric brakes, you can have hydraulic brakes, it doesn't matter. These are gonna work with either one. So hopefully this video helps break down some of the similarities and differences to help you decide which Tekonsha Prodigy Brake Controller is gonna be best for your needs.

  • Can I Add Electric Brakes To A 1993 EZ Loader Boat Trailer
Hello Mike. It sounds like you are wanting to add electric brakes to your boat trailer that currently has no brakes. This is possible, but you will first need to make sure that your axle is equipped with a brake flange at the base of the spindle. The brake flange is necessary for adding brakes. If you do have a brake flange, you will next need to determine your bearing sizes. Electric brakes will require new hubs and drum assemblies, and we need to be sure that there is a drum available...

Hey John, good question. The app must be running in order for the separate manual override button part # C83HR to work. If your phone is not connected to the controller with the app running, the button will not do anything. I know the connectivity issues can be frustrating, but it might not necessarily be something you are doing wrong so much as the controller just being unreliable. Then for the hitches, the biggest difference between the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13392 and Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # DT78MR is the length of the receiver. There are a few differences between the Universal Installation Kit part # ETBC7 and the 7-Way RV Upgrade Kit part # ETBC7L. The biggest one is that part # ETBC7 comes with both the power and brake output wire you will need to run to the cab/battery whereas the part # ETBC7L only comes with the power wire you will need to run to the battery. The reason for this is because part # ETBC7L is geared more towards wireless brake controllers like the Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller part...

There are a couple of options to connect the Tow-Pro Liberty to your Subaru which one you need will be determined by whether or not you have the factory tow package. The tow package...

  • Why is the Curt Echo Blowing Fuses in a 2020 Subaru Ascent?
The Curt Echo # C51180 does require a 30 amp fuse, so that will definitely fix that issue. This is used fairly often and this does happen, but I cannot say if this will be bad for the vehicle or not. However, if a Subaru dealer said not to do it and it is a leased vehicle, I would follow that direction. With all that being said, I do suggest going to a brake controller that mounts inside your vehicle. From everything you mentioned, I assume you have the factory towing package, which means...

  • How To Install a 7-Way Trailer Wiring Harness On a 2019 Subaru Ascent
There are two different 7-way trailer wiring harnesses for a 2019 Subaru Ascent dependent on whether or not you have the factory tow package. If you do have the factory tow package then you should be using the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118290, not the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller part # ETBC7. If you found a plug under the dash for the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3062-P then you have the factory...

  • Recommended Brake Controller for a 2019 Subaru Ascent
Yes, you will need a brake controller. To add one to your 2019 Subaru Ascent, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Subaru decelerates. It has a unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight. If you have the...

  • Installing Prodigy P3 and Adapter Plug on a 2019 Subaru Ascent
According to the instructions for the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3062-P for your Prodigy P3 # 90195 the plug should be located up under your driver's side dash by the left side kick panel (see attached photo). The wring adapter doesn't come with a fuse as it has a ground wire and the OEM factory tow package wiring should be protected. If you didn't have factory tow package wiring then you need to hardwire the P3 in and you would use a 30A circuit breaker from the battery to the...

  • Installing The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller In A 2022 Subaru Ascent
If your 2022 Subaru Ascent has the factory tow package with the factory installed 7-way trailer connector, it will have the factory brake controller connector located above the driver's side kick panel forward of the hood latch as shown in the provided photo. From there you'll just need the wiring harness # 3062-P to quickly and easily install your Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller - 2 Braking Modes - 1 to 3 Axles - Proportional # RED44FR. The white connector will plug into...

  • Harness To Use Tekonsha P3 On 2020 Subaru Ascent
The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90195 is a great option for a 2020 Subaru Ascent and it can be used with the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3062-P for a plug-in-play install. I have not yet seen a factory brake controller pigtail for the Subaru Ascent but it's unlikely to contain a fuse as fuse protection needs to be close to the battery. It may be a diode which is more common and in which case this harness would have one as...

  • Are There Instruction For Installing A Redarc Brake Controller On A 2023 Subaru Ascent?
Hello Bruce. We do have some instructions for installing the Redarc Tow-Pro Brake Controller # RED63RR. I have linked a few install videos as well as the manufacturer instructions for you below. That said, we do not have any videos or literature showing installation specifically on a Subaru Ascent, but it should still give you a good enough general idea of the process so you can get it done. Installation on a 2023 Subaru Ascent is going to be very straightforward. A few years back I had...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation and Install for 2020 Subaru Ascent
I'd give the Tekonsha item # 90195 the edge for ease of use. The full LCD display provides the status of your braking system at a glance, while the item # RED44FR Redarc Tow Pro Elite uses colored LED's to indicate problems. The display of the P3 is much more intuitive and user-friendly. However, some folks absolutely hate the appearance of a typical brake controller and want it to be as hidden as possible. If you fall into that camp, the Redarc Tow Pro Elite might be a better choice. Performance...

  • Installing a Redarc RED44FR in a 2021 Subaru Ascent
The 2021 Subaru Ascent that came from the factory with their tow package actually has a port under the dash where you can plug the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite # RED44FR directly into with an adapter. The Tekonsha Pigtail # 3062-P would plug directly into said port. You will also need the Redarc to Tekonsha adapter # 331-TPH-017 to complete the install. Unfortunately we haven't done any installs on the Ascent, so we do not have any videos as of yet.

Yes, there is a plug-and-play harness for installing the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller # RED63RR in your 2023 Subaru Ascent with tow package. You just need the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # 3062-P. • Where to Connect Red Wire During Installation of RedArc Tow Pro Elite on 2021 Subaru Outback
During the installation of the RedArc Tow Pro Elite # RED44FR, the red wire you're referencing goes to the brake light switch on the back of the brake pedal. You will need a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 to confirm which wire corresponds to that wire when the brake pedal is pressed. I've also linked an installation video of a RedArc Tow Pro Elite on an older Subaru but the process and setup behind the pedal should be fairly close.

  • Brake Controller Plug Location on my 2019 Subaru Ascent
The location to plug the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter part # 3062-P is just above the driver's side kick panel just behind the hood release latch mounting block. It will be wrapped in black (most often) tape to keep it clean and free of debris. It will be taped up to another main harness and this is likely causing your issue. Please see the attached photo for the exact location.

  • Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Controller for 2019 Subaru Ascent
First off, congratulations on your new vehicle! Now, to answer your questions: One of the great features of this controller is that it will automatically adjust your trailer's braking based on deceleration of your Ascent. Once installed, you do not need to adjust the settings on the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195 as long as you leave it plugged in. If you unplug the controller, you'll need to go through the initial set-up once again because it assumes the controller...

If you have the factory tow package, the install will be quick and easy. The Tekonsha Harness # 3062-P will allow you to plug directly into a port under the dash, and the # 331-TPH-017 will then adapt that harness to attach directly to the # RED44FR controller. • Plug and Play Brake Controller Wiring Harness for 2020 Subaru Ascent
Yes, the same brake controller harness, # 3062-P, that fits the 2019 Subaru Ascent will also fit the 2020 models. I confirmed this with our brake controller manufacturer. This plug-in harness will fit any Tekonsha or Draw-Tite brand brake controllers like the Primus IQ, # TK90160, or the BRAKE-EVN # TK63VR. I'd go with the Primus IQ, # TK90160, because it is a proportional brake controller which means it will activate the trailer brakes with the same braking intensity as your vehicle....
