Features to know about

Why Use a Soft Start for Your RV?

Soft start devices reduce the initial inrush current when your AC compressors kick on. Instead of a harsh power spike that can trip breakers or overload generators, the soft start gradually ramps up the motors, so you can use your air conditioners with small generators, limited hookups, or even a 20-amp household outlet.

Stay Cool Without the Surprises

Tired of your air conditioners tripping the breaker or waking you up with loud, clunking starts? SoftStartRV makes startup quiet and smooth, so your RV stays comfortable and your sleep stays undisturbed, even when you're boondocking or sharing power with appliances.

More Campsites, More Freedom

Run one air conditioner on a small generator, 20-amp outlet, or use the two soft starts in this kit to power two ACs on a 30-amp hookup. Keep your coffee maker, water heater, or other appliances running at the same time without fear of tripping a breaker or losing your cool, even at high altitudes.

Extend the Life of Your AC Units

By smoothing out every start, these soft starts limit strain on your AC motors and compressors, helping prevent wear and keep your systems reliable for the long haul. The built-in start capacitor and bypass contactor help ensure safe operation and prevent overheating.

Quick Installation

Installs vertically using pre-drilled holes and 3M adhesive backing. All the hardware you need is included. Three diagnostic LEDs on each unit show you system status and make troubleshooting easy.

Adventure-Ready Durability

These soft starts are IP65-rated against dust and water spray, and are made to resist vibration and flames. Tested for more than 45,000 hours of use, they're ready for road trips, off-grid campsites, and wherever your travels take you.

One package was short some connectors but overall they came ready to install. I personally cut wires shorter and used wire nuts to install.

by:

The package arrived within a few days of ordering. Installation was very easy. Within a week we were camping at a lake in Southern NM where the daytime temps were 100+. We ran 1 A/C on a 3400w generator and had no issues at all. When the real heat of the day kicked in, we ran both 15,000 A/Cs on two 3400w generators. No problem at all. We used to trip breakers and overload generators constantly. Not one issue so far. Great product!

by:

Seems like a quality product. Wiring was heavy gauge. Install was simple enough with the Dometic model PDF download. Both units worked perfectly right away. Even draws less amps during runtime. I was only expecting less amps on startup. I am very happy with my purchase.

by:

The SoftStarts work great, and are easy to install once you get the installation page from SoftStart for your particular a/c unit. Very good directions, and worked great right from the start. This is the third time I have installed these on different RV's, and have never had a problem with them.

by:

Read lots of reviews before buying. The install video looks easy enough.

by:

Easy install, no more hard compressor hits at all. No complaints at all.

by:

Works great and great communication

Absolutely wonderful! I can run both AC’s on a 30amp pedestal with no problem. My trailer is a 50 amp rig. If I plug into separate legs at my sisters house I can still run both on 110 volts. Either one will run on a single 110 by itself.

See what our Experts say about this SoftStartRV RV AC Soft Start

  • Recommended Smartstart for a Dometic Brisk Air Conditioner
The only type of Smartstart set up we have for a Dometic Brisk Air Unit is the SoftStartRV Soft Start for Single Zone Air Conditioner Setup item # SSR54FR. It'll accomplish the same thing by reducing the amps needed when your AC kicks on. You'll just need to wire it in. If you have a dual zone system you'll need the SoftStartRV Soft Start for Dual Zone Air Conditioner Setup item # SSR44FR. I have linked a diagram below so you can see how to get it set up. If you have any additional questions...

  • Soft Start Kit to Use on RV with 3 AC Units
Hey Joe, thanks for reaching out! The SoftStartUp Plug-In Soft Start for RVs # SSR64FR will work for 2 AC units, so if you only plan on booting up 2 of them then you'll be fine. If you're wanting to use all 3 ACs then I recommend installing the Soft Start for Single Zone Air Conditioner Setup # SSR54FR as well as the Kit # SSR44FR so you have a Soft Start for each AC unit. Since these are a permanent installation you won't have to remember to plug them up prior to starting up your AC kits.

  • What Is The Purpose Of A Soft Start Start Capacitor And Should There Be One On Each AC
Hi Jeff, A start capacitor/soft start is essentially just a box that holds a charge to help with the large demand when the AC unit kicks on. This will help your units run easier for a longer lifespan so it's a good idea to install them on each unit. If your units aren't drawing as much power at start up you'll put less demand on the system as a whole, minimizing the chance that you'll experience a voltage drop. We don't have a 3pk but we do have a 2pk # SSR44FR and single # SSR54FR. For...

  • Comparing Micro Air and SoftStart RV AC Unit Soft Start Kits
Hey Gary, so we don't carry that brand of soft start for RV AC units but we do have the Softstart brand like the part # SSR54FR for a single zone or part # SSR44FR for a dual zone setup. These reduce the amperage requirement on startup by 70 percent and also get rid of that super loud clunking noise you hear as well. The Micro Air does claim to reduce it by 75 percent but I've also read their customer service is pretty challenging...

  • Troubleshooting RV AC that Keeps Tripping Breaker
Hey Joe, it does sound like your start capacitor is possibly on it's way out if its sometimes throwing a breaker. Since capacitors are pretty inexpensive I would try replacing that to see if it helps. To replace an air conditioning (AC) capacitor, you'll need to match the microfarad (µF) and voltage ratings of the old capacitor, and ensure the replacement has the correct number and type of terminals. It could also be that the compressor is getting older and wanting to draw too many amps...

  • Do You Have a Soft Start for Coleman AC Units?
Hey Robert. We have a universal soft start that works with Coleman AC units. They are the SoftStartRV Soft Start for Single Zone Air Conditioner Setup item # SSR54FR or item # SSR44FR for a dual AC set up. The item # SSR54FR installs between the run capacitor and compressor. I have attached a installation video we did on a Coleman system so you can see the process. Additionally, there are specific instructions for almost all models of A/C units on the manufacturer's website. If you need...

  • Is There a Difference Between Buying The Dual SoftStartRV Kit and 2 Individual Kits?
There is no difference between buying two of the Single Kits # SSR54FR or a Dual Kit # SSR44FR. You would end up with all the same components, we just simply created the dual kit to make it easier since several RV's now come with at least 2 AC's.

  • Why Does My 6,000-Watt Portable RV Inverter Generators # 333-0003-2-0007 Shut Off When Adding 2nd AC
Even the largest generators are going to struggle to start a second air conditioner while the first one is running. This is due to an air conditioner pulling 1300-1800 running watts, and then when your second one kicks on it is pulling 3600+ starting watts. If you do not have a start capacitor installed on your AC units you should install # SSR44FR on your units. These capacitors store power to reduce the starting watts needed, and will give you generator a fighting chance of powering the AC's.

  • Troubleshooting WatchDog E2 Error Code
The E2 error of your Watchdog part # HU27FR means you have a voltage issue on line 2. The Watchdog has determined that the voltage coming in has either exceeded 132 volts or is below 104 volts. If you press the Live Reading button you can see what the voltage is at this time. Most likely it's low due to the AC drawing a lot. A Softstart will help and since you have a 2 AC setup you'd need the part # SSR44FR.

When it comes to charging and protecting your trailer and tow vehicle batteries you can either add a disconnect so you physically disconnect the battery bank, or you can add a smart charger like the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger # 331-BCDC1240D that reads, adjusts, and maintains your trailer battery bank so it gets...

Yes, there is enough room under the covers for your Dometic Penguin II AC's to install the pair of SoftStartRV Soft Starts # SSR44FR. • Can I Install Larger Breaker to Keep AC Unit From Tripping Breaker on RV
It's really tempting to just install a larger breaker when faced with frustrating situations like your AC tripping the breaker every time it kicks on but going that route creates safety concerns since the breakers are there to keep excessive power from running through your electrical system. Be sure you have other things turned off prior to starting up your AC to reduce the amount of power pulling through your circuits. If that doesn't help then what I recommend doing instead is adding...
