Question:
I have a 2020 Subaru Ascent that i would like to add a 7 pin trailer harness and brake controller to. I would prefer to use the exist prewire connectors if possible. I will need the controller and harnesses on both the back and front. What are your recommendations. Thanks

Hi Daryl!
Getting the correct brake controller will depend on if your 2020 Subaru Ascent has the factory towing package or not. If you are unsure, you will want to contact a local Subaru dealer with your VIN and they can tell you. If you do have that tow package, you will want to start with the following parts:
Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector # 118290
Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dual Plug In # 3062-P
Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness # 331-TPH-017
From here, you will want one of the two brake controllers listed below. I think the Tow-Pro Liberty would serve you perfectly fine, but I figured I would mention both. I should also mention that I am recommending the Redarc brake controllers as they are my favorite ones on the market. They work very well and I like how they install. If you were thinking about a different brand/model, just let me know and I can get a kit put together for that as well.
Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller - Dash Knob - Up to 2 Axles - Proportional # RED24FR
Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller - Dash Knob - Off-Road Mode - Up to 3 Axles - Proportional # RED44FR
If it turns out you do not have the factory towing package, it will be a little more work, but not an extreme amount or anything. You will need to start with a 4-flat if you do not already have one. The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56040 is a plug and play option, so it's quick and easy to install. Then you will need the # ETBC7 7-way upgrade kit, which will piggyback off that 4-flat. I included an install video we did with this on a 2015 Subaru Forester as it will be very similar to your '20 Ascent. From there, you will want one of the two brake controllers listed below.
Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Universal Wiring Harness - Dash Knob - Proportional # RED52VR
Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller - Dash Knob - Off-Road Mode - Up to 3 Axles - Proportional # RED44FR
I know this is a lot of parts, so if you have any questions, just let me know. Also, what are you going to be towing?

Hey Daryl, how did things go getting the 7-way harness and Redarc brake controller set up on your Ascent? I'm curious if the factory tow package made the wiring process easier. Your update could make it easier for others working on the same setup.
