Question:
This was my Question below and I have another will I need a brake controller?: I need to change from a 4 pin to 7 pin trailer plug on my 2019 Subaru Ascent. there was a trailer harness plug in in the trunk which I used to install the 4 pin plug. What do I need to buy and do you have installation instructions. Expert Reply: Yes, there is a plug in 7-way connector for your 2019 Subaru Ascent. It is the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way Trailer Connector item # 118290. It uses the same connector as the 4-ways. I have linked the installation instructions below.

Yes, you will need a brake controller. To add one to your 2019 Subaru Ascent, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED24FR. This is a proportional brake controller that activates your trailer's brakes when your Subaru decelerates. It has a unique installation method where the only visible portion is the control knob that's about the size of a nickel. The main unit is hidden away inside your dash to be completely out of the way and out of sight.
If you have the factory tow package you will need two adapters to connect this controller to your Ascent without splicing wires. The first is the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers item # 3062-P this will plug directly into your Subaru's wiring harness.
The second adapter you'll need is the Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness item # 331-TPH-017. It will connect the Tekonsha adapter to the Red Arc Liberty Pro item # RED24FR.
The harness you need to install the Brake Controller Adapter item # 3062-P will be located underneath your dash, to left of the steering column, over by the left side kick panel.
I attached a picture below that will show you were to find the connector. If you do not have this plug then you do not have the towing package and will need to use the Universal Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers item # RED69FR to complete the installation.
