Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector in your vehicle's junction box. The box is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpeting.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Brake Controller 3016 Review

Today we're going to review part number 3016. This is the Tekonsha plug in wiring adapter for the Draw-tight Tekonsha electric brake controllers. This is a vehicle-specific item. This part is designed to fit the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 light-duty trucks, the new body style. This wiring adapter will ease installation of your electric brake controller. It has a custom connector end which will plug into the built in port right here beneath the dash of your vehicle.

The other end right here will plug into the back of your Draw-tight or Tekonsha electric break controller. Now the compatible brake controllers that that works with is in the time delay version. It will work with the Draw-tight activator 1, activator 2, activator 3 and the Tekonsha power trap. In the proportional line of brake controllers, it is compatible with the Tekonsha prodigy, the Tekonsha P2, the P3, the Prinus IQ and the Voyager. This part does come with a limited one-year warranty. Basically what you would do is this end right here as you can see will plug into the factory port on your vehicle.

This end here will plug into the back of the brake controller. That should do it for the review on part number 3016, the Tekonsha plug in wiring adapter for the Draw-tight and Tekonsha electric brake controllers. .

I was happy with the product. Fit the way it was suppose to. 575872

This Plug-In adapter made installing the brake controller so easy. Hooked up within 5 minutes and ready to go. So much easier than hard wiring it. And if I want to use the brake controller in another vehicle I can just unplug it. I only wish the wiring harness was a little longer. The only place to put my controller where I could see it was on my right side and I barely was able to mount it there. 571109

2000 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased and used the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller on my 2000 Silverado with good results. When I got a new-to-me 2104 Silverado, I thought I could just buy a new cable and I was correct. It was delivered quickly and plugged in with no issues. The new truck's lower dash panel is more vertical than the older truck and I didn't want to drill holes in it for the mount, so I purchased heavy duty Velcro tape and cut it to fit. It has worked without issues. 446054

Fast service and shipping. The site allowed me to find what I needed, as I was able to conduct a bit of research on the site to narrow down all the choices. They provided phone help as well to help me select the best cable choice to make this a plug and play application. 541246

As expected, service and pricing from etrailer was exceptional. 8th order in the past year and always satisfied with the customer service side of a transaction. The cable was "factory" from Tekonsha and was of very good quality, but it was about 8" too short for me to mount the brake controller on the right side of the steering column away from the door. I had an old wiring adapter from my previous truck and cut and spliced in a 12" section so that I could mount the controller where it was least in the way and easily accessible to me, the driver. And, if I need to move the controller in the future I now have plenty of slack. One more step, but not a big deal. All is good! 559160

The wiring adapter.made the installation of the brake controller a simple plug n`play installarion. the video allowed me to know where to plug in the controller and where to install the fuses. The fuses are not included but we're already installed in my vehicle. Probably included in the tow package. The wiring adapter insures me that every connection is correct. Works perfectly. 563460

I purchased this for my 2014 Chevy Silverado long bed regular cab 4x4 work truck. It plugged in and worked fine and is great quality. The only disappointment was that it is too short in length. I would have liked to mount the controller right of the steering wheel, but it does not reach. It is only long enough to reach left of steering wheel. Not the end of the world. It works great. 121121

Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter for electric brake controllers-3016 for a 2014 silverado 1500. It is exactly what is needed to install an electric brake controller to a vehicle. It is fast and easy. This cable worked great, plugged right in, seriously took less than 5 minutes. The brake controller is easy to use, the instructional video's on the site are great, clearly show how the unit works. The brake controller comes with a cable, but it is pigtails on one end. So you don't need to purchase the extra cable, but like I wrote, it took less than 5 minutes and just plugs in. why mess with pigtails. 447807

Ordered this and a P3 controller for my 2014 Chevy truck. As always with wheels, tires, hitches, or whatever, etrailer gives me the best price and fast shipping. My golf cart has never been happier than when I put on new DOT tires from etrailer. Also, there are so many online companies that you really don't know what you will get. Or, they have no installation videos. Or, you really don't know who the seller is. etrailer has all that and actual real live people working for them that you can call! 411772

If ever there was a doubt in your mind about ordering from etrailer, erase that doubt because this is the best company around to take care of all your trailer needs. It is also helpful that they have best sales representatives to make sure your needs are met with the right parts. After this last transaction, my go to saleslady is Pat C. She took my order on Wednesday late afternoon, followed up with an email an hour later stating that my order was going to ship that evening. Well, Friday by noon, it was delivered. This part, along with the other parts in my order, were installed in just a matter of minutes and now my trailer can be pulled legally on any road. Thank you etrailer & Pat C. You've both made me a customer for life. 370967

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. The etrailer.com website also has downloadable installation instructions provided by the parts manufacturers. 477371

The Tekonsha (item 3016) wiring harness allowed me to move my Tekonsha brake box controller from a Honda to a GM product with effortless ease. Instructions of where the harness connection was located in the new location (exact fit). The ability to have no splicing of wires and a clean, factory style, connection for a low price with a trusted manufacturer was a must. Always happy with Tekonsha products and ETrailer service. 513732

FAST SHIPPING!! Great products!!!, I highly recommend purchasing from etrailer!! Easy to put together and install only takes minutes!! I'm using these products to pull a 30ft travel trailer and it does a GREAT job! Hooking up the distribution bars is so fast and easy they just slide in and your done, and the brake controller automatically sees your trailer and saves your settings, so you don't have anything else to do!! 309790

Ordered Tekonsha Prodigy P2 with the per wired adapter so you just plug one end into the electrical panel under the dash and the other end into the brake controller. Mount the controller holder and slide controller in till it snaps. Plug the pigtail in and ready to tow. Was great to actually have customer service and the operator Matt really knew the product. 138850

Too short to mount your brake controller where you want it? The parts you needed to make it longer were right in front of you. I bought this adapter harness along with the Prodigy P3, which also came with it's own harness and attached pigtails. Cut off controller connection on the 3016, and wired up the supplied pigtail harness that came in the P3 box. Took 10 minutes and I had myself plenty of extra length. Have not installed it yet but it looks simple enough with the video tutorial that eTrailer has available. 290444

The wiring harness for the trailer brake control fit perfect! It came with easy to follow instructions, and I didn't need to get the owner's manual out (though I did anyway because I see other unrelated things under the dash that I wanted to know about). After I placed my order, your company had trouble getting to go through. You took the time to call me and e-mail to make sure my order was placed so it could be shipped. Once the order went through, ground shipping was fast. The only complaint is that UPS does deliver directly to my house and it would have arrived a day sooner if it hadn't been transferred to the local Post Office for delivery instead of being delivered directly by UPS. In hind sight I could have called my local UPS facility and asked them to hold the package and I could have just picked it up there the morning it arrived. Either way, your company is top notch! 439451

I just completed a 1200 mile trip towing a 16ft trailer with a car on it. The brake controller worked very good and was easy to set up. I had firm but controlled stops with out any issues at all. I would recommend the brake controller. I can not recommend the optional wiring adapter because its too short for a Chevy 1500... The mounting location I was forced to use was less than ideal. Please add an additional 12 inches to provide more mounting options. I can easily deal with too much cable but cant do anything about one thats too short! Now that I'm back home I'll make up my own cable and remount the controller. 256685

  • Brake Controller Install Harness Recommendation for 2018 GMC Sierra 1500
  • To install a brake controller in your 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 there is a simple plug-in adapter that will connect to the back of the controller and then plug into the port under your dash. For that you'd only need the part # 3016 to install a Tekonsha brake controller like the P3 part # 90195.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500
  • For your 2019 Chevy Silverado 2500 I would recommend the Prodigy P3 Brake Controller part # 90195. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. This will be the last brake controller you buy. It can easily be transferred to future vehicles as well. To install it would only...

  • Factory Brake Controller Port for 2016 Silverado 1500 LTZ
  • Based on my research, your 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ should have the factory brake controller connector installed. It will be located behind the lower portion of the dash on the left side. There will be a box that has a lid on it, directly behind the parking brake. Just remove the lid to expose the brake controller port. I have attached an installation video on a 2014 Silverado for you to check out. The location and installation process for your 2016 model will be the same....

  • Trailer Lights Do Not Work with 2014 Chevy Silverado But Do Work with 2008 Chevy Silverado
  • The trailer connector on the 2014 Chevy Silverado will be the same as previous generations because it is an industry standard. Factory integrated trailer brake controllers sometimes will not work with electric over hydraulic braking systems so if that is what is on the trailer then that could be the problem. The solution would be to install an aftermarket brake controller that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes like the P2, # 90885, using wiring harness # 3016. But since...

  • How to Bypass Factory Integrated Brake Controller on 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500
  • Installing the P3 brake controller # 90195 on your 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 with factory integrated controller will actually be very simple. What you will do is use harness # 3016 which plugs into a port on the truck already. But you will need to remove the blue wire from the end that plugs into the truck. You will then take a length of wire, # 10-1-1, and connect it to the blue wire you removed from the connector. Route the blue wire through the firewall, under the truck, and...

  • Best Brake Controllers for a 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500
  • For your 2018 Chevy Silverado 1500 I recommend the P3 brake controller # 90195. This controller has easy to understand diagnostics, it can be mounted a full 360 degrees in the direction of travel, and it can plug right into your truck using wiring harness # 3016. Or if you want something that is going to take up less dash space but still give you great proportional braking I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Elite, # 331-EBRH-ACCV2 and wiring harness # 3016-S to plug it into the truck. Once...

  • If you are looking for a brake controller wiring harness like # 3015-P you selected then you will need # 3016 for your 2014 Chevy Silverado 1500. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. If you do not already have a compatible brake controller I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This is one of our most popular controllers because it is easy to set up, easy to use, and its reliable. If you are talking about a trailer wiring harness the only options...

  • Installing a P2 Brake Controller in a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500
  • All you will need to install the P2 brake controller in your 2016 GMC Sierra 1500 is the proper wiring harness. For your truck it is # 3016. There was a time when you would have to hardwire the brake controller to the tow package wiring on GM trucks. But for your 2016 GM went back to providing a port to plug it right in. I have included a link to a video showing how and where the 3016 harness installs.

  • Yes, you can add a brake controller to a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ. For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes. To install the controller all you would need is the correct install...

  • Where is the Wiring Harness Located For a Brake Controller On a 2016 GMC Sierra 1500
  • There is existing wiring under the dash on your 2016 GMC Sierra 1500. Your truck comes with a pre-wired factory tow package which means it is set up to easily install a brake controller. The plug-in wiring harness sits right under the dashboard above your brake pedal. This wiring harness has a plug-in end which will allow a brake controller to be easily installed without splicing or cutting into the wire. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Brake Controller # 90195 for your vehicle....

  • Trailer Brake Fuse Location on 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe
  • I took a look at the online owner's manual for your 2016 Chevy Tahoe and was able to find that the trailer brake fuse is located in the number 36 position inside the engine compartment fuse block. Check to see if the fuse is missing or damaged in anyway. If the fuse is present, you can look at the silver-colored band inside the fuse to see if it is broken or melted, which would indicate the need for a replacement fuse. I am not sure if the fuse will be present on your truck if it did...

  • Is there a Brake Controller that Fits in the Dash Pocket on a 2015 Chevy Silverado
  • If you were to use the PowerTrac # 39523 it does have all of its controls at the front where they would be accessible. Since this is a time delay control it doesn't have to be mounted in any specific orientation. This controller is 3 inches wide, 5 inches long, and 1-1/4 inches tall. If you can tell me the amount of space in the pocket on your 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 I can determine if something else might work better. In addition to the brake controller the only other part you will...

I have linked a video on a 2013 Yukon XL that will be the same as your 2014. I have also linked a help article that will help.
