Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector in your vehicle's junction box. The box is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, just above the carpeting.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Today on this 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crewcab, we're going to install the Prodigy P3 trailer brake controller, part number 90195 from Tekonsha. To help us with our install, we're going to use part number 3016. This is the Tekonsha plug in wiring adapter for electric brake controllers. We're going to start off with that part first. This will actually plug into a port underneath the dash on the left hand side. There's a box that has a lid on it, just behind the parking brake.

We need to go ahead and take the lid off that box. Looking at the box, there are two locks on the right hand side and one on the left hand side. They may be kind of hard to get to, so it might be easier to pry them loose with a screwdriver to get them started and then use a tab to help pull them off. Once we have our box lid out of the way, we'll go ahead and point out where our port is for our brake controller wiring harness. We'll use the end of the harness to show where it goes. Then we'll go ahead and simply push it into place until it clicks.

That's all we have to do. We'll go ahead and make sure that the cable runs out the top of the lid, it's all open. Then we'll just push the lid back into place. Then we'll go ahead and take our brake controller, temporarily put the brackets together, so we'll take a main bracket that holds the brake controller and snap it on top of it. Then we'll take a small bracket, which will attach to the top one with just a couple screws. Now we'll go ahead and put it in the approximate location that we want it, then we'll go ahead and make a mark on the dash.

We'll take our brake controller down, and then we'll take the small bracket and we'll screw it to the dash. At this location, the materials overlap, so it's a good idea to drill a small pilot hole out first, then use our sheet metal screw to go through both pieces. We'll go ahead and take a moment and plug our adaptor cable into the back of the brake controller. We'll simply reattach our brake controller and our large bracket to the small one. Once our screws are tightened down between the two brackets, our brake controller is ready to go. Now its a good idea to go ahead and try it out. First off, we'll go ahead and remove the manual override.

You can see that it says no trailer connected. Now we'll go ahead and plug the trailer up and try it again. You can see how the screen changes to show a truck and trailer combination. Then we'll use the manual override. You can see how it scrolls to the numbers, so we know we have a good connection there and that it works. Now we'll try the foot brake. A small set of numbers comes up. That tells us we have a signal for our brake pedal. It looks like everything works. With that, that will finish it for our install, part number 90195, the Prodigy P3 brake controller and our adapter cord part number 3016, both from Tekonsha on our 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crewcab. .

The Tekonsha (item 3016) wiring harness allowed me to move my Tekonsha brake box controller from a Honda to a GM product with effortless ease. Instructions of where the harness connection was located in the new location (exact fit). The ability to have no splicing of wires and a clean, factory style, connection for a low price with a trusted manufacturer was a must. Always happy with Tekonsha products and ETrailer service. 513732

I purchased this for my 2014 Chevy Silverado long bed regular cab 4x4 work truck. It plugged in and worked fine and is great quality. The only disappointment was that it is too short in length. I would have liked to mount the controller right of the steering wheel, but it does not reach. It is only long enough to reach left of steering wheel. Not the end of the world. It works great. 121121

2000 Chevrolet Silverado

I had purchased and used the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller on my 2000 Silverado with good results. When I got a new-to-me 2104 Silverado, I thought I could just buy a new cable and I was correct. It was delivered quickly and plugged in with no issues. The new truck's lower dash panel is more vertical than the older truck and I didn't want to drill holes in it for the mount, so I purchased heavy duty Velcro tape and cut it to fit. It has worked without issues. 446054

2015 GMC Sierra 1500

As expected, service and pricing from etrailer was exceptional. 8th order in the past year and always satisfied with the customer service side of a transaction. The cable was "factory" from Tekonsha and was of very good quality, but it was about 8" too short for me to mount the brake controller on the right side of the steering column away from the door. I had an old wiring adapter from my previous truck and cut and spliced in a 12" section so that I could mount the controller where it was least in the way and easily accessible to me, the driver. And, if I need to move the controller in the future I now have plenty of slack. One more step, but not a big deal. All is good! 559160

This Plug-In adapter made installing the brake controller so easy. Hooked up within 5 minutes and ready to go. So much easier than hard wiring it. And if I want to use the brake controller in another vehicle I can just unplug it. I only wish the wiring harness was a little longer. The only place to put my controller where I could see it was on my right side and I barely was able to mount it there. 571109

2017 Chevrolet Silverado

I just purchased a new 2017 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.3 L V6, 8ft bed, base model truck, with no options. The truck is rated to tow a 5900 lbs trailer with a CGVW limit of 11000 lbs. I will be towing a Lance 1985 travel trailer, that weighs in around 4500 lbs wet. With excellent reviews and outstanding installation videos from etrailer.com, I ordered the Curt C14006 class IV hitch; the Tekonsha proportional Prodigy P3 brake controller; the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter specified for my truck; Cipa custom slip-on towing mirrors; and the 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket w/ Mounting Bracket - HM40975 specified for my truck. All new Chevy Silverado 1500's (even the base model with no options) comes from the factory pre-wired with a basic seven wire trailer towing harness already installed. Everything electric just plugged in without a single cut or splice of the wiring or any other wiring modifications. I just followed the instructions in the excellent installation videos on the etrailer.com website. The hitch installed quickly and lined up perfectly with factory bolt holes already on the truck frame, no drilling required. Finally I slipped on the Cipa custom towing mirrors and I was ready to tow after about two hours work. If I would have ordered my truck with a factory tow package, integrated brake controller, and extendable towing mirrors, the options would have run me slightly over $1450 on a new Chevy truck. Instead, I spent two hours of my own time doing the installations and paid about $550 for all the parts by ordering by from etrailer.com. Nice savings. You need to have a good set of socket and open end wrenches, including a torque wrench adjustable to a minimum of 110 ft/lbs for the hitch bolts. Spend some time and review all the installation videos for the parts that you need to order. The etrailer.com website also has downloadable installation instructions provided by the parts manufacturers. 477371

It is vehicle specific ,so I ordered one that fits my 2019 silverado 1500.It plugged into the 4 prong receptacle inside the block box under the dash to the left of the brake pedal against the fire wall. The other end plugged into the brake controller that I ordered(the wire adapter fits several different brands) I installed the Kenosha Primus IQ. Both items had concise, clear instructions with them. After finishing the install I plugged in the travel trailer and set the the brake controller by the instructions and it is working great! The install took me about 20 minutes. 735744
