How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

2011 Toyota Tacoma

I wanted rear-wheel chains for my 2011 Tacoma that would provide excellent traction. I already have V-bars on all four wheels of my ATV and it is impossible to get that thing stuck when I plow snow; so, I bought these. I have low-profile chains for the front wheels (to prevent from hitting the upper control arm) and with these rear-wheel V-bars, I really get the traction that I need. I drove around in a snow-covered field on the side of a hill and they work great! The cam tighteners are really convenient; but, I use rubber adjusters as a precaution. No stopping me now!

Comments
I have had these chains for one year now and they are still doing the job! I am able to install the chains, adjust the cam tighteners and put on the rubber chain tighteners without moving the vehicle. This is important if you happen to be stuck. It was a good investment.

The tire chains go on easy with a little practice and warm thin gloves. Haven't had to use them much but am ready for the La Nina winter in PNW - let it snow!

Exactly what I wanted, at a reasonable price. Haven’t used them in the snow yet, but I have test fit and drove around neighborhood. They went on well, I especially like the cam tensioners around the front.

1993 Ford Ranger

Shipping was amazingly fast. I tried out the chains on the Ford Ranger. They went on easily and I could tighten them quickly. A lot better than the old style chains without cams that I could never get fully tight. I was happy that the size was correct as we have 265/75/15 size tires on the Ranger. We need the studded chains as we have a half mile asphalt driveway with some steep slopes. The v-bar chains allows us to go up and down even when the driveway is a sheet of ice, which happens often as we live in south western Wisconsin. The product quality look very good. I'll see how it wears through the season. So far, the experience of ordering and installing has been excellent.

Review from a similar V-Bar Link with Cam in Tire Chains

I ordered 2 sets (4 chains total) of these tire chains for my V10 F250, which I use to plow a private dirt driveway on the north side of a mountain in rural Pennsylvania. It's two miles (actual odometer reading) uphill to the paved road from my house. Most years, along about February, the road ices up (because no sun and midatlantic sleet issues) and plowing becomes quite challenging. I figured getting tire chains might help the traction-on-ice problem. I plow the road between 10 and 15 mph, with the truck in 4wd. Since buying the chains I have run the truck up and back the road approximately twenty times with the chains on, plowing from 4 to 8 inches of snow, conducting rollbacks of shoulder, chopping up slush, etc. I have also used the truck (with chains) to pull out two other stuck vehicles that had run into ditches. At this point I feel like I can review the product because I've used 'em enough to have an opinion. 1. These tire chains add a lot of traction on ice. A lot. Enough to plow with and enough to pull out stuck vehicles while the "tow" vehicle is sitting on ice. 2. The chains look fine and are undamaged at this juncture. Since I've used them consistently with how I expect them to be used and they are fine, I'm happy with quality at this point. 3. Maybe I will improve with practice, but it's about thirty minutes of twinking around to get these straightened out, on the truck, tightened up, bungee'd, etc. in a way that I feel OK about driving with them. (That's why 4 stars instead of 5.) Once they're on, they seem to stay put fairly effectively. I do not drive on paved roads with these chains nor do I drive faster than (max) 20 mph so I can't speak to how they might do under those circumstances. I use them for additional traction for my plow truck while plowing my iced-up dirt road... and for that, they work as advertised.

Review from a similar V-Bar Link with Cam in Tire Chains

Received today (1/13/22) and carefully inspected. The chains appear to be well-made, and a quick test fit was successful. Live in north Georgia, so needing the chains is not likely--but good to have in the event an emergency occurs after a good snow that requires transportation.

This product was amazing it worked very well . They are easy to install and they are easy to remove. they make plowing my driveway so much easier because I have a couple of low spots that fill with water and turn to ice and with these chains I have not gotten stuck would highly recommend them to anybody they also work well going down tote roads when I'm ice fishing. 5 Stars

Review from a similar V-Bar Link with Cam in Tire Chains

The learning curve for applying the tire chain was short, and in the end, the process took about 5 minutes. (It helped to drive the tire on to a brick first.) The galvanized links appear sturdy, as do the cams, and the chains seem tight enough. Intended use is road travel in snow/ice - more on that later, perhaps.

Review from a similar V-Bar Link with Cam in Tire Chains

These are a complete waste of money. Bought them last year and only used them once, they seemed to work fine. I didn’t need them for the rest of the winter. This year, on their 3rd use the cam tightener tool broke, really cheap metal. On their 4th use (needing a screwdriver and wrench to tighten the cams) they completely fell apart. 3 cross links broke on one chain, plus the outside latch fell off. Other chain seems fine which I don’t understand. Bottom line is after 4 uses totaling less than 30 miles, these chains are toast and I feel like an idiot for having purchased them...

Used them to pull my ice house off the lakes and over ice cracks that no trucks to get up or through. Then had to pull out the plow guide after he got his truck stuck in the 3 foot snow drifts. Already paid for themselves.

Review from a similar V-Bar Link with Cam in Tire Chains

I bought a pair of these to carry in my truck after seeing another Chevy Silverado get badly stuck in snow in the Gravelly Mountains in Montana while elk hunting in 2019. Fast forward to the 2020 elk season, and I kept getting stuck and sliding sideways trying to get back through melting snow drift in the Castle Mountains. Once I put these chains on the front of my truck it crawled through the snow like I was driving on dry on pavement. They were fantastic. Unfortunately the back of the truck kept trying to slide downhill (I was on a sidehill) because I only had chains for the front tires, so I have now ordered a second set. I HATE putting on chains and have been able to avoid doing so for 35 years, but when you really need them they are life savers. In terms of installation, these were very easy to put on, in spite of being stuck in snow and mud. The cam tensioners work great for taking up slack on the chains, but adding the Multi-Arm rubber adjusters really makes the chains fit tightly.

Had trouble getting out to get wood, a good amount of snow and ice underneath. Put on the chains and the old truck walked right through. We'll see how they hold up but I am very satisfied.

For your 30x10x14 tires you will want to go with Glacier V-Bar Snow Tire Chains with Cam Tighteners - 1 Pair # PWH2821SC; Glacier has confirmed these chains fit that tire size. You should confirm this with your owner's manual just to be sure. Tire chains are not recommended on a trailer since there is not drive axle that will need the traction. There could be some advantage with braking but it's going to be minimal and your truck is going to be the one that needs the traction. A good heavy-duty set of chains for your truck confirmed...
