V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Excellent chains. Used them extensively this last November getting up and down a snowed over road and snow/iced over rocky trail up the mountain in CO. They didn’t break on the rocks and got great traction on ice, got me out of several miles of 3ft of snow with ice underneath. I highly recommend the steel spring chain tensions. When properly installed you can get these chains nice and tight. I can only run chains on my rear tires due to upper control arm clearance issues (‘08 Tacoma) so I’m giving my second pair to my brother (‘12 f150) for his rear tires.

Comments
Chains are still going strong, I make sure the wash and dry them after each season. Would definitely buy again and I definitely recommend the metal spring tensioners.

Better safe than sorry, great instructional video on putting on. Having a few additional links when attaching I am looking into adding a chain link connector instead of cutting the links that are not needed, keeping from potential hazard while driving.

Have not used them as yet, were purchased for access to a remote property during extreme weather condition. The winter was mild and spring has been dry.

Finally needed the chains, and had no problems putting them on. Got through the mud to our off grid cabin with ease.

These chains are well built. My 1 ton truck was in 6” deep snow when I chained up. The truck was able to tractor right up A steep hill. The binder is stout steel, not a stamped piece prone to bending. I used rubber tensioners. The combo worked great. All of my use has been off pavement this far. I bought two sets and would do it again.

2010 Lexus GX 460

Ordered during the summer to prep for fall hunting with my Lexus GX460, rear only given right clearance in the front. Chains look off-road worthy. I got the metal spring chain tensioner hoping if they are more robust. I will add an update this fall after chasing elk in the CO mountains.

I ordered these for a mountain hunting trip, I received them in a timely manner. I put one on to ensure proper fit, and it fit as it should. Never had enough snow to require use of chains, that is the reason for the average rating.

Toyota Tacoma

I bought these chains based on etrailer videos and [online] videos of others using the Titan Vbar chains. I can tell you that these chains are super aggressive. They got me through 8” or more of semi melted and tracked up snow. I did struggle with traction on the front end, but didn’t have chains on the front wheels. In my Tacoma, I would say I was pushing the limit with snow depth. Pucker factor was pretty high as culverts we’re waiting for my mistakes. Type and condition of snow means everything. These chains are tiptop. What isn’t tiptop is the website vehicle search. I provide my year, make and model and they said the chains would work. They do not fit my tires. They are too big. That being said, I still made them work. They were super tight. Due yourself the favor and double check your tire size. You will be hard pressed to find a more aggressive chain. Love them!

I bought a full set of 4 of these chains last year for my Duramax in case I needed them when we go snowmobiling up in the mountains. As luck would have it, I got badly stuck (with snowmobile trailer in tow no less!) in some pretty deep snow because the plows couldnt keep up with the snowfall we were having at the time. I ended up jacking each wheel up, installing the chains underneath of each wheel and the truck literally drove right out of the predicament like nothing. It was such a huge relief to have the chains with us...the tow bill alone would have far exceeded what I paid for the chains, so basically they've already paid for themselves! Very high quality, well packaged and they fit right.

Great product works as described. Keeps us going in the snow back country roads Utah. Shipping is slower than expected other than that great customer service and love the chains

etrailer reminds me 1 year later to review. It just shows how much they believe in their products and their service. These are great chains. I bought them because I have used this style before and love how easy they are to put on without climbing under the truck. Last year was a dry winter and I never used them so I cant say anything about these specific chains except they are easy to put on. I practice every winter to make sure I have everything needed. I also bought the tightener, that thing that looks like a big spider, to go with these chains. The two work well together. The chains come in a bag. I dont think it will hold up. My tires are big and these chains are heavy. I will probably get a plastic box to hold the chains since this is expected to be a wet winter and I will be in the mountains more this year.

This is a good product. My only issue is that I have a 2019 ranger. On the front wheels, there is not enough clearance for these (or possibly even cables) chains. They have a suspension bar that is about 1/4 in from the tires. So these chains will bind into that space the moment you move. They work well on the rear.

- TC2828
by:

Chain appears to be heavy duty and well made for the price but the customer service and ease of dealing with etrailer was the best part.. The storage bag is sewn shut at the factory but a bit of sewing to add a drawstring makes it useful as a carrying bag

They seemed to work well. I used them to pull my loaded, enclosed, 3 place inline snowmobile trailer up a hill in our yard/driveway that had been icy for a month. They were a little trouble to get on the tire, but once on, they dug right in and easily got the trailer out to the road.

Awesome chains! Used on my 2017 Nissan Titan XD in 18 inches of snow. These chains grab and grip. Never go stuck even though my skid plate was touching. The snow was soft in some spot and in other really hard and packed and icy. The chains worked awesome in both!!! Definitely a must have

This is my second set of chains that I have ordered from etrailer. I have used them several times when traveling in the mountain of Colorado. There are occasions when chains and 4wheel drive are required. I also like the star chain adjusters make if easy to keep them tight.

box arrived in good shape, chains were inside in heavy duty plastic lined cloth bag which will work great for storage in the truck (though the top doesn't reclose once you cut it open) haven't used the chains but test fit on the truck and they're nice and heavy duty, the chain lock at the end of the cables are a nice touch that I wasn't expecting (maybe it mentioned that in the specs but I didn't read it) and the v bars are going to be great for longer wear and greater traction compared to just chains. Will put them to over the holidays and will report back if they don't work well or hold up to my expectations but they looked good out of the box.

2013 Toyota Tundra

Thank you e-trailer for shipping my order so fast. Received it quickly after ordering. I tried out the chains on my tires today and they seem to be okay. I wish the cross bar links were about a extra link wider, but I think they will do fine. I would have liked for the chain to set over the side of the tire side a little more than they do. Also I am not sure about the connecting link on the outside of the chain. It doesn't look all that secure, but having not used them yet they may be okay. I hope I never have to use them, but living in the country I wanted a set just in case I needed to travel in the snow and/or ice if it were an emergency. Thanks again e-trailer!!

Ford F-250 Super Duty

Purchased these for my F250 with V-Plow to allow me to plow my driveway to a remote cabin in Maine. These worked excellent. Easy to install with the rubber arm adjusters. They provided excellent traction on an icy snow packed gravel driveway. They are very bouncy so I would not want to use them over asphalt but worked great for my use.

As described. Was 88 degrees today so didn’t get to field test them as of yet.

  • Best Tire Chains for Trips to California Mountains - V-Bar Vs Twist Link
The best tire chains for your family trips to the California mountains are, as you suspected, the V-bar style chains. The main difference between the Titan V-Bar Tire Chains # TC2828 and the Titan Twist Link Snow Tire Chains # TC2228 is their aggressiveness and ride quality. As you mentioned, the v-bar style chains are going to offer the most traction and are best equipped to really bite into that ice and provide excellent grip in deep snow. The only drawback is that your ride quality,...

I'd recommend either the Titan Snow Tire Chains with V-bar links, part # TC2821 or the same chain with cam tighteners, part # TC2821CAM. The V-bar chains are excellent for deep snow or ice.
