V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain V-Bar Snow Tire Chains Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Titan Chain snow tire chains with the V bar links. These chains come in a number of sizes for a wide variety of applications. Our low carbon steel chains go across our tire horizontally. This provides excellent traction and also grip and braking. These are an SAE Class U chain, so you'll want to use them with vehicles that have no restriction around the wheel well area. They're meant for highway or off road use and it's recommended to use a rubber adjuster to help keep that tension. This one is part number TC0A3.

These Titan chains have a nice V bar pattern. What they've done is taken their standard twist links and they've added on a small angled piece of metal there, that really helps to grip that snow, give you superior traction in both snow and ice. We're here at the passenger side of the vehicle. We've got our chain all laid out. This is just to ensure that we don't have any kinks, any tangles, any twisted things that we're going to have to deal with. We're working tire size 27555R20 and again, these tire chains are made in a wide variety of sizes, so lots of different applications for them.

We'll want to just place the chain up and over our tire. It's important to keep the hook side facing outward. As you can see, we've got a nice smooth back here, and then more of a blunt surface here on the front. We don't want that to be rubbing up against the sidewall, so we'll keep that smooth edge facing in. We want to just work the chain kind of down in front of the tire here in the front. We're just going to roll it forward on it.

We want to make sure you got all the slack you can have right there. We now just want to roll our vehicle forward and we just kind of work our chain over the top of the tire here, kind of get it centered up. Any slack that you might have here in the front, you want to pull towards the back. That's where we're going to be connecting it. All right, come around here to the rear and hook our tag end up there on the larger hook. We'll pull our slack around to the front side here and get it connected as well.

It's important to note which link you use in the rear. We used our second there and we've got a plus or minus one variable, so we can use the third, the second or the first here. It looks like we may be able to get it into the second one there. You want to get it of course, as tight as you can but you also want to be able to function it and operate it, to make it safe. In my case, we just can't get it to go to that second one, so we'll use our first one, connect that in. You bring that catch right down over top of it there, that's going to hold it in place and keep it from backing out. Then we'll bring in our rubber tensioner. You just connect it in to five points around the outside of the tire here. You want to get it as equal as you can, spacing wise, but you certainly don't have to count links or do anything like that. The hooks on this should be facing outward as well, just like on the tire chain itself. You don't want that to be rubbing into your tire, causing any trouble. Just drive a few car lengths forward, make sure we don't have any slack that we need to work out of there, and re-tighten. That will complete today's look at the Titan Chain heavy duty alloy snow tire chains with square links, designed for tires sizes from 15 inches all the way up to 22 inches and offers a thirty mile an hour maximum speed rating. That will complete today's look at the Titan Chain snow tire chains, with the V bar link. .

Other that opening and test fitting on my truck, I have been lucky enough to not have to use them. State law requires my truck to have snow chains due to its weight. If I really need to use them, they are ready to be used. 697967

Purchased these for my F250 with V-Plow to allow me to plow my driveway to a remote cabin in Maine. These worked excellent. Easy to install with the rubber arm adjusters. They provided excellent traction on an icy snow packed gravel driveway. They are very bouncy so I would not want to use them over asphalt but worked great for my use. 455621

Ordered and received two days later with standard shipping. Examined product carefully and they are well made with heavy materials. They should stand up well in service. No snow yet, but when it comes I am sure that they will provide excellent traction for my 4 X 4 pickup. Am sure I could have rated excellent, if I had actually got to use them in snow. 225301

Excellent chains. Used them extensively this last November getting up and down a snowed over road and snow/iced over rocky trail up the mountain in CO. They didn’t break on the rocks and got great traction on ice, got me out of several miles of 3ft of snow with ice underneath. I highly recommend the steel spring chain tensions. When properly installed you can get these chains nice and tight. I can only run chains on my rear tires due to upper control arm clearance issues (‘08 Tacoma) so I’m giving my second pair to my brother (‘12 f150) for his rear tires. 666338

These chains are well built. My 1 ton truck was in 6” deep snow when I chained up. The truck was able to tractor right up A steep hill. The binder is stout steel, not a stamped piece prone to bending. I used rubber tensioners. The combo worked great. All of my use has been off pavement this far. I bought two sets and would do it again. 599123

Package came quickly. Tried them on. They fit well. Have yet to test them in snow yet or would’ve given 5 stars 449685

The only thing I don't like about these tire chains is that there "Make In China".... If I'd known they were "Made In China" I wouldn't have bought them. 110286

Perfect fit for my 275/65-18's on a 2017 F-150. Superior grip in the V-bars, easy on and off, no-frills, heavy duty chain. Wrap 'em on, clip the ends, and tighten with a quick chain adjuster. Shipping was free, and very fast! 456252

Haven't driven with the chains yet, but laid them out on the ground and they are well made and easy to straighten. The shipping was excellent: fast and well packaged. I think I'll be very pleased with these. 583056

Its not a bad idea to do a test fit in your garage or driveway in order to familiarize yourself with the install. Much better to figure it out there than when youre up to your ankles in snow.

box arrived in good shape, chains were inside in heavy duty plastic lined cloth bag which will work great for storage in the truck (though the top doesn't reclose once you cut it open) haven't used the chains but test fit on the truck and they're nice and heavy duty, the chain lock at the end of the cables are a nice touch that I wasn't expecting (maybe it mentioned that in the specs but I didn't read it) and the v bars are going to be great for longer wear and greater traction compared to just chains. Will put them to over the holidays and will report back if they don't work well or hold up to my expectations but they looked good out of the box. 166081

Great chains when the roads are snow packed and frozen. They are a little spendy but the v- bar is rl southern it. I received these two days after ordering! Great stuff. 575703

A group of friends and I have an annual trip to a remote hunting lodge and with the winter weather we've been having I decided to get some chains. I ordered two sets for my Ford Expedition. The delivery was on schedule and I had absolutely no problem getting to the cabin. These chains provided excellent traction on the icy roads. 600228

Thank you e-trailer for shipping my order so fast. Received it quickly after ordering. I tried out the chains on my tires today and they seem to be okay. I wish the cross bar links were about a extra link wider, but I think they will do fine. I would have liked for the chain to set over the side of the tire side a little more than they do. Also I am not sure about the connecting link on the outside of the chain. It doesn't look all that secure, but having not used them yet they may be okay. I hope I never have to use them, but living in the country I wanted a set just in case I needed to travel in the snow and/or ice if it were an emergency. Thanks again e-trailer!! 733330

  • Should Ladder Chains or Diamond Pattern Chains be Installed on Rear Tires of a 2006 Ford F-250
If your 2006 Ford F-250 is a 4x4 then it would be best to put the ladder pattern chains, like part # TC2828, on the rear axle and the diamond pattern chains, like part # TH01594267, on the front axle. This is due to the reduced clearance that front tires normally have. I do recommend using the same type of tire chains though if you have AWD enabled on your pickup. This will give you a more consistent tread pattern which, in turn, will give you a better driving experience. Please...
