V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed by moving the hook to the next link.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Excellent chains. Used them extensively this last November getting up and down a snowed over road and snow/iced over rocky trail up the mountain in CO. They didn’t break on the rocks and got great traction on ice, got me out of several miles of 3ft of snow with ice underneath. I highly recommend the steel spring chain tensions. When properly installed you can get these chains nice and tight. I can only run chains on my rear tires due to upper control arm clearance issues (‘08 Tacoma) so I’m giving my second pair to my brother (‘12 f150) for his rear tires. 666338

Chains are still going strong, I make sure the wash and dry them after each season. Would definitely buy again and I definitely recommend the metal spring tensioners.

They seemed to work well. I used them to pull my loaded, enclosed, 3 place inline snowmobile trailer up a hill in our yard/driveway that had been icy for a month. They were a little trouble to get on the tire, but once on, they dug right in and easily got the trailer out to the road. 936144

Really worked great driving 1 mile down and back out of are camp road. Road was ice and the chains dug right in. 935545

Toyota Tacoma

I bought these chains based on etrailer videos and [online] videos of others using the Titan Vbar chains. I can tell you that these chains are super aggressive. They got me through 8” or more of semi melted and tracked up snow. I did struggle with traction on the front end, but didn’t have chains on the front wheels. In my Tacoma, I would say I was pushing the limit with snow depth. Pucker factor was pretty high as culverts we’re waiting for my mistakes. Type and condition of snow means everything. These chains are tiptop. What isn’t tiptop is the website vehicle search. I provide my year, make and model and they said the chains would work. They do not fit my tires. They are too big. That being said, I still made them work. They were super tight. Due yourself the favor and double check your tire size. You will be hard pressed to find a more aggressive chain. Love them! 933868

This is a good product. My only issue is that I have a 2019 ranger. On the front wheels, there is not enough clearance for these (or possibly even cables) chains. They have a suspension bar that is about 1/4 in from the tires. So these chains will bind into that space the moment you move. They work well on the rear. 920419

- TC2828

I bought a full set of 4 of these chains last year for my Duramax in case I needed them when we go snowmobiling up in the mountains. As luck would have it, I got badly stuck (with snowmobile trailer in tow no less!) in some pretty deep snow because the plows couldnt keep up with the snowfall we were having at the time. I ended up jacking each wheel up, installing the chains underneath of each wheel and the truck literally drove right out of the predicament like nothing. It was such a huge relief to have the chains with us...the tow bill alone would have far exceeded what I paid for the chains, so basically they've already paid for themselves! Very high quality, well packaged and they fit right. 917556

2018 Nissan Titan

Awesome chains! Used on my 2017 Nissan Titan XD in 18 inches of snow. These chains grab and grip. Never go stuck even though my skid plate was touching. The snow was soft in some spot and in other really hard and packed and icy. The chains worked awesome in both!!! Definitely a must have 912661

etrailer reminds me 1 year later to review. It just shows how much they believe in their products and their service. These are great chains. I bought them because I have used this style before and love how easy they are to put on without climbing under the truck. Last year was a dry winter and I never used them so I cant say anything about these specific chains except they are easy to put on. I practice every winter to make sure I have everything needed. I also bought the tightener, that thing that looks like a big spider, to go with these chains. The two work well together. The chains come in a bag. I dont think it will hold up. My tires are big and these chains are heavy. I will probably get a plastic box to hold the chains since this is expected to be a wet winter and I will be in the mountains more this year. 907431

  • Best Tire Chains for Trips to California Mountains - V-Bar Vs Twist Link
The best tire chains for your family trips to the California mountains are, as you suspected, the V-bar style chains. The main difference between the Titan V-Bar Tire Chains # TC2828 and the Titan Twist Link Snow Tire Chains # TC2228 is their aggressiveness and ride quality. As you mentioned, the v-bar style chains are going to offer the most traction and are best equipped to really bite into that ice and provide excellent grip in deep snow. The only drawback is that your ride quality,...

  • Tire Chains for 245/75R17 Single Tires and Dually Tires
The Titan tire chains, # TC2828, are a fit for your 245/75R17 tires on the front of your truck. And Titan chains # TC4831 are a fit for the dually rear tires, 245/75R17 at the back. So these chains you have chosen are correct. And they are both V-bar construction so they will match up. Rubber adjusters are recommended, # TCMA2, sold in pairs, to ensure a secure fit. • Should Ladder Chains or Diamond Pattern Chains be Installed on Rear Tires of a 2006 Ford F-250
If your 2006 Ford F-250 is a 4x4 then it would be best to put the ladder pattern chains, like part # TC2828, on the rear axle and the diamond pattern chains, like part # TH01594267, on the front axle. This is due to the reduced clearance that front tires normally have. I do recommend using the same type of tire chains though if you have AWD enabled on your pickup. This will give you a more consistent tread pattern which, in turn, will give you a better driving experience. Please...

  • Tire Chain that Fits Tire Size 275/55-20
The tire size you mentioned is compatible with the tire chains # TC2828 but that is only a fit for the actual tire size and does not guarantee clearance on the vehicle. Since your manual recommends no tire chains for that size I would recommend contacting a GM dealer in an area that requires tire chains and ask what they recommend you do to be compliant with tire chain laws and not damage the vehicle. Most likely they will say a Class S compatible chain like the part # TC2533 would be okay...

The Titan Chain snow chains you referenced, part # TC2828, are a good chain for the purpose you're intending to use them but they may not be a good choice for your truck. First of all it depends on your tire size. Let me know what size tires you have on your truck so I can confirm a fit. Secondly, your 2004 Ford F-350's owner's manual recommends Class S compatible chains to make sure there's enough clearance between the chain and any part of the truck such as wiring or brake lines.
