Video Transcript for Yakima DeckHand Kayak Carrier Review

Speaker 1: Today, we'll be taking a look at and showing you how to install, the Yakima Deckhand Kayak Carrier with tie downs, part number: Y04083-2.The Yakima Deckhand Kayak Carrier is perfect for carrying one kayak on your vehicle's roof. This is going to be great for sea, river, recreational and most fishing kayaks. The flexible saddle provides maximum support for your kayak and conforms to the shape of your kayak. The Yakima Deckhand Carrier comes with four straps, two low straps and two anchor tie down straps, one for the bow and one for the stern. The bow and stern straps have plastic covering on the portion that's going to touch your vehicle, that's going to help to prevent any scratches or abrasions. The cam buckle strap has a rubber cover to protect your kayak from any scratches or abrasions. It also comes with a strap keeper to hold up your excess. The Yakima Deckhand has a carrying capacity of one kayak, with a weight capacity of 80 pounds.

The saddles are covered in felt to help slide your kayak in place and make for easier loading from the rear of your vehicle. The Yakima Deckhand fits round, square, arrow and elliptical and most factory crossbars with a minimum crossbar spread of 24 inches. The carrier has the option to knock out this plastic core here and insert the same key system lock core to help prevent theft and tampering. This carrier comes with a limited lifetime warranty and is quick and easy to install. We'll show you how to do that now.I've gone ahead and opened up our clamp, we're just going to place this onto our crossbar.

Next, we can start to tighten down our knob and secure our clamps around our bar. The only thing you want to make sure of is that it is in line with our front cradle. Now, we're ready to load up our kayak. Now, that we have our kayak secured on the top of our vehicle, we're going to strap it down. Before we do so, we're going to take our strap keeper and just insert it so that it's attached to our load strap. We want it closer to our cam.

Then, we can take this portion of our strap and throw it over our kayak. Now, we'll start by feeding our strap through our strap keeper here at the top. Now, we'll take our strap and feed it through the keeper down here. Again, we'll take it through that bottom keeper and up through the top keeper here. Now, we'll take the end of our strap and put it through our cam buckle.

We'll tighten that down completely and fold up our strap for our strap keeper. Now, we'll repeat the same process for the back half of our kayak. We've got our two load straps secured down and we're next going to secure our bow and stern straps. We're going to start by taking this buckle strap, we're going to feed it through the loop on the end of our kayak and feed it through itself. We'll tighten this up. We'll take our hook strap and we're just going to feed a portion of this strap through our buckle. Now, we'll want to find a metal place on our vehicle to secure this to. We want to make sure it's not plastic, so we're going to use our safety chain loops here on our hitch. Then, we can take up that slack and we'll tie up our excess. We can repeat the same process for the front of our vehicle. That's going to be our completed look at the Yakima Deckhand Kayak Carrier with tie downs, part number: Y04083-2.

I got these to replace the Yakima Mako saddles. These are very similar saddles with the same strapping system as the Mako but these are so much easier to mount, adjust, and remove. The single sliding mechanism is a breeze to use and fits several size bars. I use these to transport Surfski Kayaks and they conform well to the haul and keep the kayak in place without needing to tighten the straps too hard and chance cracking the haul. Product was received as advertised and on time. Great service. 414391

Ask the Experts about this Yakima Watersport Carriers

Do you have a question about this Watersport Carrier?

  • Best Way To Carry a Kayak Bow Up On Yakima Round CrossBars
  • If you want to carry a kayak with the bow pointed up then you will want to use a saddle style kayak carrier. If you have Yakima Round CrossBars then the Yakima DeckHand Kayak Carrier with Tie-Downs part # Y04083-2 is exactly what you will want to use. The Yakima DeckHand Kayak Carrier will also work with other styles of crossbars as well but fits the Yakima Round CrossBars best. I cannot recommend you use a j-style carrier on its side which is what I think you are asking.

  • How to Carry a Kayak on a 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack with Yakima RailBar Crossbars
  • I do have an option for your 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack but the Yakima RailBar Crossbars part # Y00447-0448 as you suspected do not allow for enough clearance between the bottom of the crossbar and top of the roof for a clamp around saddle style kayak carrier to be used. Therefore, you have two options to consider which would be to use a non-saddle style kayak carrier that uses the integrated channels in the crossbars or to switch to a different roof rack system that will allow for a...

  • Recommended Kayak Carrier for a 2015 Honda CR-V with Factory Crossbars
  • By cradle carrier I assume you mean the saddles. If I'm wrong let me know which style you mean and I'll make a different recommendation. If a saddle carrier is what you're looking for I suggest the Yakima DeckHand # Y04083-2. It is confirmed, by Yakima, to fit the factory crossbars on your 2015 Honda CR-V. The carrier can also be locked to your roof rack using Yakima's SKS Lock Cores # Y07202. I also recommend using the Thule Quick Loops # TH530 to make it easier to find attachment...

  • Yakima Kayak Carriers that Fit a 2013 Nissan Xterra with Factory Roof Rack
  • There are several roof kayak carriers that will fit your 2013 Nissan Xterra with the factory roof rack. First, if you like the Yakima BigStack, # Y04041, it will fit! You have some other options for Yakima as well. Here is a list of what will fit: JayLow # Y04073 SweetRoll # Y04074 HandRoll # Y04082-2 EvenKeel # Y04052 JayHook # Y04084 DeckHand # Y04083-2 BowDown # Y04042 I have linked several videos for you. • Recommended Roof Rack to Carry a Kayak on a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • There are a few different roof types you may have on your 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Which roof type will determine the parts needed to have a complete roof rack. Your Jeep may have the E Group package, which means the roof will have rails that run front to back that have a chrome strip on them. There will be a channel that runs inside the rail. If it does, I suggest the Yakima rack that includes parts # Y00421, # Y00148, and # Y00244. The feet connect to the factory rails. If the...

  • How to Carry a Kayak and a Canoe on a 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon
  • I do have an option for you but we don't really have any feasible solutions for you to carry both a kayak and canoe on the roof of your 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon at the same time. Instead, I recommend placing both the kayak and canoe on a pull behind trailer like the Malone XtraLight Trailer part # MPG525G. In order to pull a trailer with your vehicle you will need a trailer hitch, wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. For this I recommend using the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch part...

  • 2 Kayak Carrier Options For A 2019 Toyota Highlander Factory Rack
  • One key consideration here is if you have enough crossbar width on top of your 2019 Toyota Highlander factory crossbars to lay 2 kayaks side by side. Thule recommends 53 inches of crossbar width for example, which is well beyond what most factory rails provide. Yakima recommends new aftermarket crossbars for a scenario like this usually but said it's possible to use 2 sets of Yakima DeckHand Kayak Carriers with Tie-Downs # Y04083-2 on the same vehicle and use the Showboat # Y04068 to...

  • Recommended Roof Rack and Kayak Carrier for a 2008 Hyundai Sonata
  • You'll need to start by adding a roof rack to your 2008 Hyundai Sonata. A great option is the Rhino-Rack aero bar system that consists of: 46 inch Crossbars # RRVA118B-2 Legs # RRRLKVA Fit Kit # DK037 Then you'll need to add a kayak carrier to the roof rack. The two main styles of roof carriers are the J-style, like the Yakima JayHook # Y04084 that holds the kayaks on its side, and saddle-style, like the Yakima DeckHand # Y04083-2 which carries the kayak with it laying down. ...
