Advisability of Using Tire Chains on a 2010 Chevy Express

Updated 09/25/2013 | Published 09/24/2013

Question:

Hi, I have a 2010 Chevy Express with tire size 245/75/16. The manual says not to use tire chains because of clearance issues. I was wondering if you carry any products that meet the requirements or if you have experience with chains of a Express Van.

If the owners manual prohibits the use of tire chains, I cannot make any recommendations that might contradict that.

You might check with your Chevy dealer to see if a Class S tire chain or cable would be permissible. A Class S chain will extend no more than 15 mm (some would extend less) to the inside of the tire and would provide maximum clearance. I have linked you to our selection of Class S chains and cables that are compatible with your tire size.

The primary differences between the least and most expensive choices are performance, ease of installation and durability. A less expensive set of cable chains like the Glacier # PW2021C are meant for emergency or occasional use, would need to be manually tightened and have a 90 day warranty. These ladder style cable chains provide straight-ahead traction, but not much lateral traction. On the other end of the spectrum, the Konig Self-Tensioning Chains, part # TH02230K77 offer a 5 year warranty and will self-tension.

I have linked you to some FAQ articles about tire chains that you might find helpful.
