V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Use the cam tensioning devices that are built into the side chain to tighten. Do this by inserting the flat end of the included wrench into the slot on each cam and twisting it.

5. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

For a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic with 4x4 with stock 275/60 R20 tires. Summary: Good on Rear Tires NOT on Front Tires. They fit good on the rear tires but I do not recommend for the front tires. Unless I'm installing them wrong there is not enough clearance between the inner front sidewall and suspension components (Steering Knuckle and Upper Control Arm). It would be nice to have on both front and rear axles though.

Thank you for your review! I saw the problem you mentioned in your review and looked it up in the owners manual for a 2019 Ram 1500 Classic. Where they talk about the use of tire chains, they only recommend that tire chains be used on the rear axle tires only. Just wanted to pass along what I found out as a reason for TC2828CAM not fitting the front tires. Hopefully this helps!

Good morning, I have used your tire chains for years. Always loved them. Today I tried them on my new Ford Ranger. (Bought New for that truck) Backs fit great, fronts not at all. I guess I will have to contact customer service to return them.

Sorry to hear that. Customer Service will be in contact with you.

They are great chains but you have to, have to, have to, I can’t express it enough, buy the rubber bungee cord hooks to make it tighter and keep the chains on, I tried without it at first and any speed over 8mph and they might fall off, I have a 2018 F150 and with both products I can drive up to 35 to 40 mph without any issues even though I think that speed is not recommended, I just wanted to see what would happen. It’s a Texan thing, I’ve used these in Colorado and New Mexico and are perfect

I live on an unpaved road 7 miles in high on a mountain which ices up nightly. Winter starts here mid October and ends mid May. These ice chains are needed to get me home a few nights a week during the winter months. They fits as described. I questioned Angela at customer service if these chains wold fit “E” load tires. She told me they would and they do. I like etrailer as my goto accessory store for my HD Sierra, Tundra and Tahoe Z71. The videos are very informative except I haven’t been able to install the chains without moving the vehicle. I need to roll it either forward or back to complete the install. Please see photos. Thank You for your Professionalism at etrailer

Heavy duty and rugged. I had to trim off some links to make them fit just right but but they fit my tires perfectly now and super snug. Only used them once but they worked great and easy to put on. I bought a second set for survival if a big storm hits.

Great looking set of chains!!! Put one on my Toyota 4x4 to see how they fit. It was much easier to put on, and that cam system works great an love those V-bars. I think they will do a great job for my truck and on our mountain roads.

Tested 'em out and fit exactly. Tied back with a chain link for no loose ends. Headed north with the snow and ice. Ready for the road ahead. Easy install. Cam over pulled everything tight. 265-70-17's .

Received the chains quicker than expected. Easy to install in the garage on a dry warm day.! Should be reasonably easy to install when needed in the snow. FORD recommends no chains for your pick up. However, etrailer demonstrated that they can be used, I appreciate the extra effort they went through. Always need chains in the mountains during hunting season.

Never used chains before. They exceeded my expectations. Easy to put on, tighten and take off. Amazing traction for plowing deep snow with my F150. I highly recommend these chains.

These chains are well worth the money. Before I put a set on my rear tires of my F150, I would get stuck even in four wheel drive. I would have to get out and dig myself out. I used this chains at the end of last season and this year and havent gotten stuck yet.

Awesome chains great value... Seriously heavy duty full link chains that are easy to put on. Great fit, put them on and never had to adjust or retighten them all day. Would recommend these chains and this seller to closest of friends.

The tire chains that I purchased arrived quickly. They are well made, and easy to install. The cam system makes tightening the chains very easy. I would highly recommend purchasing these chains from etrailer.

Excellent! Just put these on the rear of my F150 and plowed two feet of snow without any problems.

2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I ordered these chains to help negotiate several miles of unmaintained dirt roads to my hunting camp. Winter conditions will range from solid ice to deep snow to rutted mud. I believe that these chains will handle all of it. Fit up and installation is simple. The cams really help to get a sung fit. etrailer's web site made the selection of the correct size easy. Just be sure to check your owner's manual to verify chains like this are appropriate for your vehicle. Overall, I would recommend these to anyone needing aggressive traction on variable road conditions.

- TC2828CAM

Great chains, used 4 of them very hard last year. I broke one of the cross chains on one side which I can repair but have been rough on them. They make all the difference for 1-2 feet of snow. The cam locking system is really nice. They fit the very biggest tire for that chain with 1-2 links left. Wouldn’t go out of recommended size.

2005 Chevrolet Colorado

I bought chains and rubber tensioners. Be sure to get tensioner! The chains were delivered very quickly. Packed in a very sturdy box. I unpacked them and practiced installing them on my 2005 4Runner with 265/70/17 tires. No problem putting them on. First time I used chains with cams. They made installation a snap. We live in Colorado. I got them a couple of days before a snow storm. We got hit with 16” of snow so I was able to try the chains right away. We live on a hill. I drove without the chains first and then installed the chains so I could make a comparison. Without the chains on mud and snow tires I was slipping around and almost got stuck. I was in 4WD with the center differential locked. I installed the chains (glad I practiced) and was able to drive the hill in 4WD hi with the center differential unlocked. This was a great buy at a great price!

Toyota Tundra

Used a pair of these on my 4x4 Tundra last November on a hunting trip in the western Maine mountains. The logging roads were a sheet of glare ice covered with a few inches of snow. Other trucks were spinning and sliding into the ditch. With my v-bar chains I didn't spin, skid or slip even a little bit. Not even when hard braking on the steep hills. Very impressed! Highly recommended! The cams are great but I would still recommend using the optional rubber tensioners.

Nice chains. However I had to add a link to make them fit. Your spec sheet said they will fit my size tires but they were a bit short. I made them work. And before you ask. I have been installing chains on vehicles for 40 years so I am an experienced chain user. Perhaps you should add a few extra links to your product line. Thanks

2009 Dodge Ram Pickup

Dunno what this portends, but I recently purchased my 1st ever set of snow chains. For years local road plows have been sufficient, but with Lake Erie conditions can get dicey. Did my research and settled on Titans for my 09 Doge Ram 1500 Pickup (TC282CAM). They must be good ones. Reviewed a how-to-do-it Youtube video where a Canadian CVSE officer demonstrated putting them on his work vehicle. Then i went out and familiarized myself with the procedure. Removal goes easier when the inside hook is released first. lol

Bought these chains a year ago. Since then they have provided a few more pounds to the load I carry year round and certainly in winter in the back of my truck. And that is just fine with me. Yes, I appreciate snow, as it waters the earth, but really wouldnt want so much that it would require the chains. So they are sort of like having a spare tire and hoping you never have to use it. lol

2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

I use my chains about every third weekend over the winter so I can pull my ice castle fish house on the lake. The chains allow me the ability to go just about where ever I wish. That being said, my tire chains are not as heavy duty as I thought they would be. They have not broken or failed. They are lighter duty than the similar ones my cousin and uncle bought from another site. I have a 2013 Dodge Ram Sport with 275/60/20 tires. I went with etrailer because tirechains did not have 275/60/20 listed. I find out now, that I should have just entered 33x10.5. On yours, the cam wrench bent with the 1st installation, and with the bent handle it is difficult to put them on without the assistance of a large screwdriver and channel lock. The cam wrench supplied with their set is both longer and a larger diameter. The design where the ends of the chains connect to each other on the outside of the wheel is also much simpler than what your design is. My chains fit tight around the diameter of the tire and it's almost impossible to get the little triangle slid over the tab, especially when the wrench is in there. I get it close, then use the channel lock to hold the lever in place, take the wrench out, then take the screw driver and pry against the tire to get clearance so I can slide the triangle piece into place. The triangle is tight against the wall of the tire preventing it from sliding easily. Try doing this procedure with gloves on when it is -20 air temp with -35 windchills. It's not possible. It's not always that cold, but anything outside in the winter is not fun without gloves. I'm disappointed with my tire chains, but haven't had the funds to buy a new set from another site yet. I think the fix would be to re-engineer the triangle slip locking piece or whole connection method, but more importantly provide a higher quality cam wrench that has a longer handle, made from thicker and a higher grade metal. I figured I'd reply since you sent me a follow up email.

For your 275/70-18 tire size, the # TC2828CAM wouldn't be a fit. For a similar V-bar chain set, use # TC3829. For tensioners, I'd recommend # TCMA2. If you click the provided link, you can see a product demonstration video featuring the Titan V-bar chains.

Putting chains on all 4 wheels will give you the best possible traction. However, you still will be able to get around with just a set on the rear axle. You won't have as good of traction for accelerating, braking or turning though. Most likely the ski resort area you plan on going to will require you to have at least one set of chains with you regardless of if you have 4WD so getting a set now will save you some hassle. The Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains w/ Cams # TC2828CAM that you...

  • Will Snow Chains On Just the Rear Axle of 2015 Chevy Tahoe Help Get Around in Snow and Ice
Tire chains add quite a bit of overall size to a wheel and tire. On steering axles this added size can interfere with several things since the wheels turn and can get close to suspension components and fender wells. That would be why the owners manual of your vehicle states not to use them. Running chains on just the drive axle of your vehicle will help you still though. We see a lot of people do that and it does get them around in the snow. Ideally you run them on all four wheels but...

  • Snow Chain Recommendation for 305/75-16 Tire for Use in Snow and Mud
The Titan Tire Chain part # TC2828CAM that you referenced has been confirmed as a fit for the tire size 305/70R16 that you have on your 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. Snow chains do provide great mud traction. But they do require you to get out and install them when needed and remove them when not. Which may not be exactly fun when they are covered in mud. The adjusters part # TCMA2 that you referenced would also be the one to use as they perform the best and install the easiest.

  • Can Extra Chain Links on Titan Tire Chains be Cut Off
Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC2828CAM have a device to hold the excess chain. If you wanted to remove a few links you could do so but be careful because there may come a time when you need that extra slack since not all tires of the same size are exactly the same size.

  • Available Tire Chains for Tire Size 275/70R18
We do offer tire chains to fit your tire size 275/70R18, shown on the linked page, but you'll want to check your vehicle owner's manual to confirm that the auto maker approves use of tire chains. Some vehicles can use chains only on one axle; others may be able to use chains only with specific tire sizes. Some vehicles that have limited clearance in the wheel wells will require use of low-profile S-Class chains. Check you manual to be sure. For a set of chains that will perform well...

For the 12-16.5 tires on your skid loader, I recommend using the Pewag All Square Snow Tire Chains, # PWE3229S. The square chain links are excellent for icy conditions and this chain was designed to fit super-single and wide-base-rim tires.

  • Recommended Tire Chains For 2014 Toyota Tundra
We have several tire chains that are designed to fit the tires you said you have on your 2014 Tundra. One of the tire chains I recommend are the Titan, part # TC2828CAM. these chains are made of low-carbon steel and feature v-bar studs that grip the ice very well. Another nice chain is the Glacier Twist Link Snow Tire Chains, part # PWH2228SC. These are a standard twist-link chain that includes cam-style tighteners. You will want to check your owner's manual to see if there...

You'll have to check the owners manual of your vehicle for any restrictions on clearances or tire chain usage, but we installed the Titan V-Bar set part # TC2828CAM on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and found they worked well. I attached an install video that shows this down below.

  • Does Titan Snow Chain TC2828CAM Come with Cam Tightening Wrench
The Titan chains part # TC2828CAM come with an L-shaped cam wrench like the part # TCLH2 but if you wanted a T-shaped wrench you'd instead want the part # TCTH2. The T style will be a bit easier to use.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2006 GMC Sierra with Tire Size 265/70R17
For a set of cables that fit your tire size of 265/70R17 we have the PW2121V which would fit and work well. Or for a set of chains with similar clearance requirements the Titan Alloy Snow Chains # TC2326 would be a great option too. So the other set of chains you mentioned part # TC2828CAM is V-bar style chain which will help quite a bit but it's geared towards icy conditions. For deep snow square links are the best as they cut through deep snow the best. So for that the part # TC2228SCAM...

  • Can Tire Snow Chains Be Used on 2014 GMC Yukon Denali XL w/ 275/55-20 Tires
We fitguide our tire chains according to their compatibility with a given tire size not by their compatibility with a given vehicle, because many vehicles (like your Yukon XL) can be fitted with several different tire sizes. Before recommending tire chains to anyone, I always recommend that they consult their vehicle manufacturer or owners manual for any advice or prohibitions about tire snow chain usage that might be mentioned. I found an online copy of the owner's manual which does...
