V-Bar Icebreakers

V-Bar Icebreakers

The V-shaped studs (also known as icebreakers, spikes, or cleats) that are built into these twist-link tire chains bite into ice, providing superior grip for a safer ride on ice-covered roads.

Installation

1. Drape the chain over the tire, making sure that the V-bars are facing out.

2. Drive forward about 1/4 of a tire revolution. (You can also lay the chain out and then drive onto it.)

3. Fasten the ends of the chain together.

4. Use the cam tensioning devices that are built into the side chain to tighten. Do this by inserting the flat end of the included wrench into the slot on each cam and twisting it.

5. Drive forward a bit and tighten the chain as needed.

You can use rubber or chain adjusters (sold separately) to increase the tension on the chains for a tighter fit.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire, as shown below.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Bought chains for a small Kubota tractor and an F150 4x4. We recently had over 8" of snow on our gravel driveway, and the chains were a godsend. With the chains , the Kubota was unstoppable and I was able to plow. Haven't tried the truck yet. 333664

Chains are as advertised. I was just surprised that they came in plain heavy bags, stitched closed, with instructions printed on the bags of how to apply them. Previous chains I purchased had come in their own storage cases. My mistake, not your's for not investigating further. I found an old metal tool box I can use to store them, since I bought 2 sets for my 4x4 Tundra and they are over 35 pounds total.. Shipping was as promised and no Hassle. 163952

Sorry, no pictures! Wasn't thinking when I did my test fit. :( I was not sure how to put these on from the instructions on the bag to I "googled" a video for this product. Once I had viewed the video, installation was a snap! I was concerned that, even though all of the cams were tightened, the chains were not snug against the tire. I used the add-on tensioners that I purchased and I achieved a snug fit. Hopefully, all will be well when the need for real use actually arrives. Product seems well made and, as stated before, installation was easy! 325453

Product fit and performed as promised. Communication about my order status from etrailer was great. Price was as good as any I could find. the only downside was item I ordered was out of stock and it took a while to receive. I was given the option to substitute and declined but I thought that was another part of the great service. I would definitely purchase from etrailer again. 111217

Bought TC2828CAM tire chains and TCSA2 chain tension springs. Haven't had a chance to use either the tire chains nor the link springs; however, all items where shiny and new and looked to be made of first class metal, so I'd expect each item to work as advertised without issue. The speed of delivery was like 2 days, so awesome. E-mail updates of shipping and the ability to track it was fine. I'd recommend purchases from here for whatever you'd want. 241107

Make sure you get the TCMA2 Titan Chain Multi-Arm Rubber Tire Chain Adjusters! I ordered the TC2828CAM chains for my 2016 Tacoma with 265/60-18 tires (the same truck/tires/chains in the video). Easy to install but unfortunately mine fit VERY loose when fitting them on a dry run. With the hooks on the tightest linkage & all cams tightened, they are still loose. So loose that two of the ladders can sit side by side with everything else tightened. This makes the rubber adjusters a must. 316125

2013 Dodge Ram Pickup

I use my chains about every third weekend over the winter so I can pull my ice castle fish house on the lake. The chains allow me the ability to go just about where ever I wish. That being said, my tire chains are not as heavy duty as I thought they would be. They have not broken or failed. They are lighter duty than the similar ones my cousin and uncle bought from another site. I have a 2013 Dodge Ram Sport with 275/60/20 tires. I went with etrailer because tirechains did not have 275/60/20 listed. I find out now, that I should have just entered 33x10.5. On yours, the cam wrench bent with the 1st installation, and with the bent handle it is difficult to put them on without the assistance of a large screwdriver and channel lock. The cam wrench supplied with their set is both longer and a larger diameter. The design where the ends of the chains connect to each other on the outside of the wheel is also much simpler than what your design is. My chains fit tight around the diameter of the tire and it's almost impossible to get the little triangle slid over the tab, especially when the wrench is in there. I get it close, then use the channel lock to hold the lever in place, take the wrench out, then take the screw driver and pry against the tire to get clearance so I can slide the triangle piece into place. The triangle is tight against the wall of the tire preventing it from sliding easily. Try doing this procedure with gloves on when it is -20 air temp with -35 windchills. It's not possible. It's not always that cold, but anything outside in the winter is not fun without gloves. I'm disappointed with my tire chains, but haven't had the funds to buy a new set from another site yet. I think the fix would be to re-engineer the triangle slip locking piece or whole connection method, but more importantly provide a higher quality cam wrench that has a longer handle, made from thicker and a higher grade metal. I figured I'd reply since you sent me a follow up email. 468839

Great set of chains. These are easy to install which is a big plus when the temperature is below zero. Instructions are very simple and clear. Best part of all was the price. Surprisingly low when I compared it and the product to higher priced, lesser quality chains. Don’t think you can go wrong with these or this company. Order/ ship time was one day. 450777

Seemed to be great at first for my plow truck, first sign of trouble when I got the blade hung up in the snow bank that required a bit of aggression and the chain links broke. I mended, and continue to mend on a regular basis if there is any aggressive driving required. 722390

Bought these to put on my 2012 Ram with aftermarket wheels and tires (275/60R20’s) these chains were a pain to put on and after about an hour I got the first one on. I made sure to practice putting them on at home before heading to the snow. Well made chains but be aware that for this certain size tire you’ll be able to get them on but not without some muscle power. Watching a video helped but I had to get every bit of slack I could to muscle the latch shut and get it onto the keeper link. 728441

Easily the best purchase I've made for my truck. I've never had to use chains when driving in the snow, but after a close call last storm, I ordered two pairs of chains for my 4x4. Tried them out last weekend, and they are amazing. Slick ice in between mtns. does not stand a chance. Recommend at least one pair if you drive on ice. 344099

Dunno what this portends, but I recently purchased my 1st ever set of snow chains. For years local road plows have been sufficient, but with Lake Erie conditions can get dicey. Did my research and settled on Titans for my 09 Doge Ram 1500 Pickup (TC282CAM). They must be good ones. Reviewed a how-to-do-it Youtube video where a Canadian CVSE officer demonstrated putting them on his work vehicle. Then i went out and familiarized myself with the procedure. Removal goes easier when the inside hook is released first. lol 324706

Bought these chains a year ago. Since then they have provided a few more pounds to the load I carry year round and certainly in winter in the back of my truck. And that is just fine with me. Yes, I appreciate snow, as it waters the earth, but really wouldnt want so much that it would require the chains. So they are sort of like having a spare tire and hoping you never have to use it. lol

I will give these a positive review based on my experience with etrailer. They were reasonably priced and arrived in a timely manner. Customer service is always great with shipping and delivery updates. However, these are snow chains. They were purchased as a "just in case" item and I have yet to use them. Should I use them this winter I will check back in with an updated review. 314526

I live on an unpaved road 7 miles in high on a mountain which ices up nightly. Winter starts here mid October and ends mid May. These ice chains are needed to get me home a few nights a week during the winter months. They fits as described. I questioned Angela at customer service if these chains wold fit “E” load tires. She told me they would and they do. I like etrailer as my goto accessory store for my HD Sierra, Tundra and Tahoe Z71. The videos are very informative except I haven’t been able to install the chains without moving the vehicle. I need to roll it either forward or back to complete the install. Please see photos. Thank You for your Professionalism at etrailer 590572

  • Comparing Twist Link and V-Bar Style Tire Chains
Twist link chains offer excellent traction in deep snow and some are even rated for mud. They provide decent traction on ice, and since they have rounded edges ride quality isn't too bad. V-Bar chains such as # TC2828CAM are similar but have better grip on ice. If you can tell me the tire size on your Ram 3500 I can make some specific recommendations for you. I have also included a link to our help article that covers various aspects of tire chains and other traction devices.

The Titan chains will fit all of the tires that the Glacier chains will fit, but there are many more fits for the Titan option. V-bar chains like the # TC3831CAM are designed to do the best in icy conditions as the V-bars will break up the ice. Square link like part # TC3231SCAM are designed for deep snow traction as the square links are larger...

These are a ladder pattern V-bar link tire chain with cams. The cams are used to adjust the tension of the...

  • Tire Chain Compatibility on 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Equipped with 255/75/17 Mud Tires
I reviewed the online edition of the owner's manual for the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and on pages 423/4 it notes that large tires like your 255/75/17 mud/snow tires cannot use tire chains. The reason is inadequate clearance within the wheel wells and around components like brake lines. Special low-profile S-Class chains are made for such circumstances but according to Jeep these can be used only on smaller tire sizes P225/75R16 or P235/65R17 and then only on the rear axle. I recommend...

  • Recommended Snow Tire Chains for Use on Case Skid Steer with 12 X 16.5 Tires
For the 12-16.5 tires on your skid loader, I recommend using the Pewag Skid Steer Chains # PWSSE12165-2. These use 8.2mm nickel manganese alloy cross chains and are made for off-road and snow removal use. You'll want to check the operator's/owner's manual for your Case Skid Steer for any guidance regarding use of tire chains. The manufacturer of any vehicle, whether its a passenger car or a piece of heavy equipment, gets to decide if, when and how tire chains will be used on their vehicle. In...

  • Should Tire Chains Be Used On The Front Or Rear Tires On 2015 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
Per the owner's manual, tire chains are to be used on the rear tires only on your 2015 Wrangler. The manual also states that for P225/75R16 or a P235/65R17 tires, Class 'S' tire chains are recommended. You may want to check with your dealership if you have tires that are a different size and see if tire chains can be used. When using tire chains the maximum driving speed is 30 mph. if you let me know what size tires you have on your Wrangler I will be happy to make some recommendations...

  • Tire Chains for a 2010 Ford F-150 with P275/55R20 Tires
The problem is that the larger the wheel and tire size the less clearance there is all around the tire. There may be plenty of clearance between the tread and the wheel wells but limited space between the inner sidewall and the truck. The limited clearance could result in the chains hitting a vehicle component and causing damage. The Class S rated cable chains that fit this size are # PW2028C. Class S means that the chains need less than 15 millimeters between tire sidewall and the vehicle....

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for a 2015 Chevy Tahoe
Putting chains on all 4 wheels will give you the best possible traction. However, you still will be able to get around with just a set on the rear axle. You won't have as good of traction for accelerating, braking or turning though. Most likely the ski resort area you plan on going to will require you to have at least one set of chains with you regardless of if you have 4WD so getting a set now will save you some hassle. The Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains w/ Cams # TC2828CAM that you...

  • Can Extra Chain Links on Titan Tire Chains be Cut Off
Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains # TC2828CAM have a device to hold the excess chain. If you wanted to remove a few links you could do so but be careful because there may come a time when you need that extra slack since not all tires of the same size are exactly the same size.

  • Tire Chain Recommendation for 2017 GMC Sierra
Vehicle owner's manuals will indicate compatibility with tire chains. Some vehicles can use tire chains only on one axle or the other, or only on certain specific tire sizes. Sometimes only special low-profile S-Class chains can be used. The 2017 GMC Sierra 1500 can come from the factory with as many as seven different stock tire sizes. Dealerships may choose to alter the wheel/tire size to enhance sales potential. The linked page displays the factory tires sizes; select your size to...

  • Will Snow Chains On Just the Rear Axle of 2015 Chevy Tahoe Help Get Around in Snow and Ice
Tire chains add quite a bit of overall size to a wheel and tire. On steering axles this added size can interfere with several things since the wheels turn and can get close to suspension components and fender wells. That would be why the owners manual of your vehicle states not to use them. Running chains on just the drive axle of your vehicle will help you still though. We see a lot of people do that and it does get them around in the snow. Ideally you run them on all four wheels but...
