Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Availability Of a 12 x 4 Inch Wheel With 4 Lug Bolt Pattern and 5.30-12 Inch Trailer Tire
Currently all the wheel and tire combinations we have with the 5.30-12, and a 4 lug bolt pattern are going to have a 2.84" pilot hole center. This should not be an issue for mounting as these are all lug centric wheels which will center on your hub using tapered Lug Nuts # CE11051 and not the hole center. Here is a list of the wheels and tires we currently have for the dimensions you are needing. Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range C # AM30790 Kenda...

  • 5.30-12 Tire and Wheel Options for a 2006 Rockwood Forest River Freedom Pop-Up Camper
We currently have 10 different tire and wheel options for a 5.30-12 size. There are 2 different bolt patterns, so you would need to determine if you have a 4 on 4 or 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I have included a help article that helps with figuring that out and I have included the options for each bolt pattern below. 4 on 4 - Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" Galvanized Wheel # AM30790 - Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30780 - Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire...

  • Recommended Trailer Tires that Have a 4 Bolt Pattern That Can Travel at Highway Speeds
Hey Charles, for a 12" trailer wheel with a 4 lug pattern than can be used at highway speeds you can use the Kenda KR25 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Aluminum HWT Wheel # AM31208HWT which measures 12" x 4", has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern, and has a max speed rating of 81 mph.

  • Replacement Wheels/Tires for a 1992 Jayco J-Series Pop-Up Camper

The Kenda tire has an 840 lb weight capacity per tire and a 65 mph speed rating. It also comes with a two year warranty. • Are Radial Trailer Tires Better than Bias Ply Trailer Tires for a Horse Trailer
Radial tires do track better and run cooler so I would say that going to radials would be a good idea. A trailer tire by itself like # AM10303 is rated for 2,830 pounds at 80 psi. The higher capacity tires will not increase the trailer capacity but since they are rated for more weight they ought to last longer. Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire. This is because trailer tires have a thicker side wall and if they are under inflated they will...

  • How to Determine if Replacing 5.70-8 Tires and Wheels with 5.30-12 on a Camper Trailer is Possible
Your current wheel and tire size has an overall diameter of 18.1 inches. The size you are looking at, 5.30-12, has a diameter of 21.9 inches. If you have the room for the additional tire size and you get the correct wheel bolt pattern then what you are looking to do should work well. The taller tire should smooth out the ride a bit. The Kenda 5.30-12 Wheel and Tire # AM30700 that you referenced has a bolt pattern of 4 on 4. If you are unsure of the bolt pattern of your current wheels...

  • Spare Wheel And Tire For a Boat Trailer With Solid White Wheel and 5.3-12" Tire
Well Joe, your tires are likely not speed rated but I am a little confused by the numbers you gave me. Tires without a speed rating are typically only good for 55mph. I know the K-353 is likely the Kenda 353 series tire but the w-12-106 are confusing as there is no way w is the speed rating as that would be 168mph and the 106(2,094lbs) while being a weight rating would be more than I see Kenda rates this size tire. You might check the trailer frame to verify what size and weight capacity...

  • Replacement 4 Bolt Tire/Wheel Combination for Small Utility Trailer
I recommend staying with a tire size similar to what you have now, although since weight capacity isn't an issue, you can go a bit smaller. We offer several economic wheel/tire options in varying sizes and load ranges that would be ideal for your trailer and towing needs. For the 5.30-12 size you mentioned, I suggest our Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel 4 on 4 - Load Range C, # AM30780. Or, for an even lighter load range, you could go with our Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer...

  • Does a Replacement Trailer Wheel Center Pilot Hole have to be the Exact Same Size as the Old Wheels
Having a larger center pilot hole on a wheel is fine as long as the wheel secures to the hub using lug nuts. If the old wheels secure to the hub using bolts then that means the wheel centers on the hub with the pilot hole and you would need a wheel with the exact same size center hole. Take a look at how the wheel secures to the hub. If it uses lug nuts and the threaded studs are part of the hub, you can go with a wheel that has a larger pilot hole. All of the tire and wheel combos that...

  • Can Small Box Trailer have Wider Axle with Larger Diameter Wheel Tires Installed
Going with a taller wheel and tire will give you a bit more stability and will make trailer ride a bit smoother. It may not be a night and day difference but it will help. Going with a 5.30-12 wheel and tire like the part # AM30700 you mentioned would be a great option. Going bigger might make a bit of improvement but it's really up to you if that would be worth it. For picking out the axle you'll need to determine the axle capacity you'll want. Most likely a 2k axle would be your best...
