Can Small Box Trailer have Wider Axle with Larger Diameter Wheel Tires Installed

Updated 05/30/2019 | Published 05/29/2019

Question:

We got a small utility trailer donated to us Scout Troop and converting from a small open box trailer to a 6-canoe trailer. It currently has small 4.80-8 4 lug tires/wheels under the trailer floor, but we were thinking of replacing the axle and going with larger 5.30-12inch tires/wheels 4 lug with new fenders just outside the trailer frame. Our thought is that it would travel better at highway speeds and be a bit more stable being a little wider. Any concerns with this setup? Should we go with even bigger wheels/tires? Capacity isnt an issue, as trailer, canoes, equipment, etc. wont be more than 1,000 - 1,100 pounds total.

Going with a taller wheel and tire will give you a bit more stability and will make trailer ride a bit smoother. It may not be a night and day difference but it will help.

Going with a 5.30-12 wheel and tire like the part # AM30700 you mentioned would be a great option. Going bigger might make a bit of improvement but it's really up to you if that would be worth it.

For picking out the axle you'll need to determine the axle capacity you'll want. Most likely a 2k axle would be your best choice and then you'd need to determine the dimensions needed. You'll want to measure the distance between the spring seats on center and then you'll also need the distance between where you'll want the wheel centers to be. With that info you'll know what size axle you'd need.

I attached a link to a page that has all of the axles we carry as well as a picture that shows the measurements needed. If you find that you need an axle with different dimensions than what we offer you'll need to find a local trailer shop to you who can order you in custom axles.

When it's time to install fenders generally you want at least 4 inches between the top of the trailer tire and the bottom of the fender.
