Why Fold-Down Steps are Right for You

If you've ever stepped into a camper that has standard metal steps, you've probably felt that scary springboard effect that makes you reach for the handle. That bounce occurs because those pull-out steps never touch the ground. Fold-down steps have adjustable legs that steady the steps on the ground, so you can feel safe using them. Also, fold-down steps store behind your camper door, which means they aren't left out in the elements to rust or warp like factory steps.

MORryde StepAbove vs. Lippert SolidStep

But what makes these MORryde steps different from other fold-down steps, like the Lippert SolidSteps? The StepAbove has a couple advantages over the SolidStep.

First, the MORryde steps can be detached when you need park your camper in tight spots. If you have to park close to another vehicle in a storage lot, for example, there might not be enough clearance to deploy your steps. With SolidStep, this means that you can't deploy the steps and now they are blocking your entryway. MORryde steps can be easily detached by sliding the pins out of the floor hinges, which allows you to lift the steps out of the doorway so you can slip inside if needed.

Second, unlike the SolidSteps which have a solid backplate on the top step, the StepAbove has no backplates blocking the gaps between each step. This makes it easy to sweep the steps free of dirt and debris before folding them up in your doorway, so you aren't stuck cleaning up your entry after every hike or trip.

Will MORryde StepAbove Entry Steps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and 5th wheels. The fold-down steps from MORryde install inside your camper's door frame and lift up to latch into the doorway for storage. To ensure that you choose the correct size for your application, follow these 3 easy steps:

Step 1: Measure the Entry Height

Measuring your RV entry height

Measure from the doorway threshold on your camper to the ground. For these steps to work, you will need an entry height between 30" and 33-1/2".

If you find that you have a smaller or larger entry height, there are other step assemblies that fit entry heights ranging from 25" to 42". (See table below.)

Step 2: Measure the Doorway Width

Measuring your RV doorway width

Measure from the inside of your door flange to the inside of the door flange on the opposite side. Your doorway will need to be between 23-3/4" wide and 26-1/4" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out that you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 21-3/4" wide to 30-1/2" wide. (See table below.)

Step 3: Measure the Threshold

Measuring your RV threshold height

Measure the rise of your threshold. The distance between the floor and top of the threshold must be between 5/8" and 3/4". If the height of your threshold is outside of this range, the doors may not close properly.

Measuring your RV threshold gap

To allow room for the hinge plate, there must be a gap of at least 3/8" between the threshold and the bottom of the entry and screen doors. If the gap is too narrow, the doors may not close while the steps are down.

Find the Step that Works for You

If, after taking your camper's measurements, you find that these steps will not work for you, use the table below to determine which part number you need.

  • Differences Between MORryde StepAbove Fold-Down Steps MR98RR and MR48RR
You are right on. The 8" rise/drop on the MORryde StepAbove Fold-Down Steps # MR98RR is the height between the steps. The # MR48RR you were looking at has a 9" rise/drop meaning the distance between the steps is 9". The # MR98RR is designed for RVs with a 23-3/4" - 26-1/4" wide door frame, and requires and entry height between 30" - 33-1/2", and the # MR48RR is designed for RVs with the same 23-3/4" - 26-1/4" wide door frame, but is used when the entry height is between 34" - 36". Great questions. I have solutions for both questions. Lippert does not sell replacement bolts or hardware kits for this application you will be able to source the bolts you need from any local hardware store. As for a replacement options I strongly recommend the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for 23-3/4" to 26-1/4" Wide Doorways - 3 Steps # MR98RR. They are a solid step that offers great stability. No more worries if your steps are going snap off and cause a fall. You just need to make...

  • Is there an Easier Way to Use the Pin on the Lippert Solid Steps or Should I Switch to MorRyde?
Hello Nancy, I’m sorry to hear you're having such a hard time with the pin system. Unfortunately, you're not alone as I have heard similar complaints from others as well. Sadly, I haven’t found a good way to make the current setup easier to use. I’d recommend switching to the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps for 23-3/4" to 26-1/4" wide doorways – 3 Steps, part # MR98RR. I've attached a chart so you can double-check your measurements, but this model is the best match for your current Lippert...

  • Do You Carry The Lippert 698799 SolidStep Fold-Down Steps?
While we do not carry that particular Lippert step we do have the similar MORryde # MR98RR or a better option in my opinion is the TorkLift GlowStep # TLA9104. I prefer this step as it folds up nicely and works better in tight areas like storage lots. These are all designed to fit a 24" wide door and have 3 steps like the Lippert.

  • Which Fold Down Steps Do I Need for a 2025 Coachman Leprechaun 319MB Motorhome?
Hey Jeff. I'm sure we have a set of MORryde RV steps but you'll need to do some measuring before I can tell you which one will work with your 2025 Coachman Leprechaun 319MB motorhome. There's no database that shows me what steps you have or the measurements I need. You'll need to measure the width of the entry doorway from the narrowest points, the door flanges, and from the ground up to the door threshold to get the entry height. For example, the MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR98RR,...

Hey Aaron, our height suggestions for RV steps are generally pretty good but I ALWAYS recommend measuring to double check as there are always variables that can make the dimension different. The part # MR48RR has a height range of 34-36 inches which is next size up from the # MR98RR.

  • Can 3-Step MORryde StepAbove Kit Be Installed on 27" Threshold Height
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out! You can try using the 3-Step MORryde StepAbove RV Steps # MR98RR, but since your height is 3" shorter than the minimum the stairs won't sit correctly which is why MORryde recommends the 2-Step # MR26RR. When I spoke with my contact at MORryde they said the 3-Step will retract to a minimum of 28" and since your height is 27" the threshold bracket will stick up enough that you won't be able to close your door. So for your case you'll need to stick with...

These steps mount below your RV and fit a cutout space of 27" wide x 14-1/2" tall x 12" deep. The steps themselves measure 24" wide x 8" deep.
