Will the MORryde MR98RR 3-Step Work with a 28-1/2" Entry Height?

I have a 2016 Forest River Salem with reversed axles and 15 wheels and tires for 28-1/2 threshold height on level ground. My 25-3/8 door opening and threshold height suggest a MORyde StepAbove MR26RR Folding step set. I mainly camp dispersed in medium rough terrain, which can increase my threshold ht. I would like to choose an MR98RR Folding Step system to add a 3rd step and for the increased reach in case of rough ground. Will the legs retract far enough to let me use the steps on level ground with my 28-1/4 threshold height? We are an active older couple and I would prefer the 3rd step model unless it doesnt have enough adjustability. Will the MR98RR work for us? Also, I want to add a screen door stiffening handle and wanted to be sure it will have clearance with the steps folded up... I probably only need 1-1/2 clearance at the 3 elevation. Hi Walt,
Based on the measurements you provided, I would not recommend the MORryde StepAbove part # MR98RR for your trailer. I completely understand why you're interested in the 3-step model since you frequently camp on rough, uneven terrain, but the MR98RR is designed for entry heights between 30 inches and 33-1/2 inches. With your entry height measuring about 28-1/2 inches on level ground, the steps may not retract enough to function properly during normal use.
For your setup, I would feel much more confident recommending the MORryde StepAbove part # MR26RR. Your 25-3/8 inch doorway width and entry height fall right within its intended fit range, and the adjustable legs provide up to 13 inches of adjustment in 1-inch increments. That gives you quite a bit of flexibility for the uneven campsites you're describing while still ensuring the steps work correctly when you're parked on level ground.
I did look at some other folding step systems that offer three steps and store inside the doorway, but unfortunately I wasn't able to find one that fits both your 25-3/8 inch doorway opening and 28-1/2 inch entry height. Most of the 3-step options are designed for taller entry heights or wider door openings than your Salem has.
As for the screen door handle, I would want to know the specific handle you're considering before giving you a definite answer on clearance. The folded step assembly sits inside the doorway, and clearance can vary depending on the handle style and how far it protrudes from the door.
What style screen door handle are you looking at, and is it something you use mainly as a grab handle when entering and exiting the trailer?

Go with the three-step. Here in the backcountry it is the only way to go. Did away with the standard Airstream steps.

While I can't answer your question completely about the handle, I will say that the handle that I added to screen door works perfectly. The handle I have sits about 1 1/2" proud of the door and at the height of the handle there's about 2 3/4" of clearance between the steps (when they're up) and the inside of the door frame (because the steps tilt backwards, or at least the bottom of them are slanted away from the door when it's closed.) My handle is mounted to the door just above the sliding panel the covers the handle. I hope this helps.

Thanks for your thoughts, Heather! I'll have signal till about 9 am tomorrow, then none for 7 days while we run the San Juan River. Assuming that the legs retract completely, I'd like to know the length difference in the stair frames between the 2-step and the 3-step models... if the legs on the 2 step model can extend up to 9 inches, it seems possible that the minimum height for the 3 step model with legs fully retracted should be within my range. Can you help me with these dimensions, or do you have a store in Phoenix AZ so i can measure myself?
