Will Lippert SolidSteps Work for You?

Fold-down steps are typically installed on travel trailers and some RVs. The fold-down steps from Lippert lift up to latch into your camper's doorway for storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

SolidStep Door Flanges

The Lippert SolidSteps install inside your camper's doorframe. Measuring for this may seem tricky, but once you know what to look for, figuring out the right fit for your RV doorway is easy.

SolidStep Door Flanges

Measure between the door frame flanges - the doorway width - to determine the step size that will fit into your camper's doorway. You will need a doorway that is at least 29" wide to 36" wide for these steps to work.

If it turns out you have a wider or narrower doorway, there are other step assemblies that fit doorways ranging from 24" wide to 36" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

To make sure your doors will close when the steps are installed, measure from the top of the threshold plate to the bottom of the door. You will need a gap of about 1/4" to 3/8" to allow the door to close over the step's mounting plate.

The doorway threshold will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

SolidStep Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will tell you how many steps you need.

Once you know your doorway width and entry heigh measurements, the chart below will tell you which part number you need. This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Doorway WidthEntry Heightetrailer Part Number
24"22" - 28" LC713662
25" - 28.9"22" - 28"LC733931
27" - 36"LC791572
35" - 44"LC791574
29" - 36"22" - 28"LC733932
27" - 36"LC791573
35" - 44"LC791575

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Place the mounting bracket into the camper doorway
  3. Extend until feet touch the ground
  4. Center the steps in the doorframe
  5. Slide assembly forward until firmly placed against outside threshold
  6. Install fasteners through the mounting holes into the camper floor

-Secure the hardware (not included) but dont tighten

  7. Lift the step assembly into the doorway and make sure the latching arm engages

-If necessary, loosen the bolts on the latching arm to adjust

  8. Tighten the latching arm bolts and the floor fasteners

Love the product. However during the install several items were bent making installation tricky. We were able to complete the installation. But when we raise it up or bring it down we have to give it a slight push to the right to clear the door.

by:

Other than being slightly confusing to install this has functioned great! Fantastic upgrade over the scissor stairs we had before.

by:

Steps arrived sooner than I expected. Only 2 days from order. They are perfect for my 2019 Jayco eagle. I ordered the 30 inch model and they fit perfectly.
Box was damaged in transit and 1 of the wood screws was missing but I had some on hand to replace it.

by:

The Lippert 4 step SolidStep is a great upgrade to our Grand Design 5th wheel camper. The steps are solid and the installation was easy.

by:

I purchased these steps because I’ve seen them at camper shows and in camper showrooms. My wife has had major foot surgery and regular camper steps are very difficult for her. These will be ideal for her. These steps are definitely sturdy and very solid and the price was very fair.

by:

The stairs are so much better then the original bouncy stairs that the RV came with. The are solid and the angle is more like a household stair. My only complaint is when you have to change the leg length it is difficult. The pins at the bottom of the legs come out and it's hard to line them back up.

by:

Product is awesome… Customer Service at etrailer is awesome… UPS however is questionable…. Ordered 2 sets of steps at different times. Both sets delivered with box looking like is was dragged down the road with all hardware loose in the box and falling out of the holes. Second set of steps were bent but I was able to repair.

by:

Solid steps! Big upgrade compared to the "old style" steps that come standard on older RV's. If I had to complain about something I would say that the leg adjustment should be designed differently to make it easier to adjust the legs.

by:

Had these for a year now and love them. Only issue was a few parts were bent in shipping, but was able to fix easily. Having these steps with the hand rail in winter was a game changer. Finish is holding up a year later and me and my wife full time

by:

We are so happy that we purchased these steps. The fold down steps that came with the trailer were just dangerous. the Solid Step system is just that, Solid. the steps are sturdy and wide and the system sits solidly on the ground. Well worth the money.

by:

The SolidStep fold down step are very well made and I am impressed with the quality. Ordering from etrailer was a breeze and delivery was quick. However, UPS did not handle the carton very well, there were parts that poked through the carton, it was barely holding together and the bags of hardware/screws included had broken open and were scattered in the carton. It was a flimsy carton for shipping an items of that weight and there was one part that was slightly bent which didn't matter as the lift assist replaced it anyway. Installation was not hard and I was able to complete the steps, lift assist, and handrail in a couple of hours. There were a couple of things I was disappointed in, several loose bolts and screws, and the left side rail only had half the necessary holes for mounting the handrail on the left side. I had to drill the rest of the holes to complete the handrail install. We are very happy with the new steps and would definitely buy again.

by:

Great steps. Installed myself with some help from my sister-in-law. My 12 1/2 year old dog can easily navigate. Woman and Dog approved!!

by:

Easy install and reliable would buy them agian

by:

Steps arrived just a few days after ordering. They appear to be well built, and finished. The top step is very wide and easy to step out on to. Overall this is a great upgrade from the springy fold out steps. The cardboard they came in was damaged, but the stairs were OK. However a packet of wood screws was missing. I contacted etrailer to get these.

The steps work well and are a big improvement. The only criticism that I have is that the locking pins provided are a little awkward to when adjusting the step height. I made my own longer pins with pointed ends. I really, a spring loaded release system is needed.

by:

These stairs are more than awesome! They fit perfectly in the doorway for storage. They feel so stable when going up and down.

I love love these stairs

by:

It’s been a year and they steps are doing great no matter the weather. I would have given it a 5 but the locking mechanism doesn’t extend out far enough due to the wiggle of the unit while in the up position and even with less than a 1/4” on each side one side of the sliding locks may not engage well.

by:

Excellent products, easy to install, they look great. The steps are very solid and will work much better then the steps that came with my RV.

by:

The box was destroyed and parts missing. The steps are ok. This is not etrailer fault just poor packing from lci. etrailer is going to send the missing parts.

by:

The box that it was in was torn all up, the steps has a few dings in them. Not enough to send it back, but it could have been prevented. It took me all of an hour to install and that includes grinding the 1/8 inch lip off of the threshold to make the screen door shut better. This is a huge improvement over the factory steps. Highly recommend them.

by:

Order came right away. Exactly what I was looking for. It yolks 10 minutes to install. 100% superior to Morryde POS. All the steps are sturdy and you have piece of mind going up and down the stairs with your hands full or with the big dog. The other guys had a big gap in between step 2-3 and your foot would go right through. It happens to me twice and my teenage son. Lippert steps are the way to go and I will never use anything else but Lippert product !!!

by:

Good and solid!! So much better than the stock spring board… but it’s not perfect. With this design you may have clearance issues deploying them and whatever is on the steps (dirt, water) when you put them up it ends up on the floor. Worth it for us.

by:

Lippert is better at making steps than they are at packaging them. Would buy again and will recommend. Chose Lippert over the competitor because of the larger top step and happy I did. Shop etrailer with confidence. Fast and accurate. Thanks etrailer team

Year later I still recommend. Working and holding up as it should. I expect many worry free years of service from these steps.

by:

Great product but as many here have said the box when it shows up is a little beat up. Very easy to install.

by:

The forth step was a game changer. Less incline and easier for the dogs.

We have a 2025 Brinkley model Z 285Air travel trailer that came standard with Lippert Solid 3-step. After talking with etrailer customer service, I ordered the 4-step version of these steps. They were a direct swap out on our RV. No need to do the full install.

  • What Might Cause Lippert SolidStep to Make Shutting Door Difficult
We've seen this issue before on an older camper that had the screen door installed a little lower than how they are now. An installer here actually had this exact problem. If your door is close to closing, a couple suggestions that you can try first is to not reinstall the decorative roll plate that goes against the threshold on the inside. Typically it has a lip that can raise the plate on the step. This can be done without removing the steps or any trimming. If that does work and you...

  • Can Step Be Added to Lippert Solid Step
Hey Ron! Sorry Lippert didn't get back to you yet, they can be pretty hit or miss on responses. Did you email them? I usually try to use their chat but even that is pretty dependent on who you actually get ahold of. As far as adding a step goes, I don't know of a good way you could accomplish that even with modifications. The only way I can think of to "add" a step is to use a foldable step like the # S-150 and sit it at the bottom. Outside of that the best option would be to replace...

We do not carry the Morryde steps so I can't speak to their fit, but we do carry the similar Lippert SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps like # LC791575. These have a lip that will go over the threshold you are referencing and will allow the door to close in most cases. • Correct SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps for a 36 Inch Threshold Height
If the threshold height of a trailer measures 36" then you can use either the triple step or quad step version of the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps. I recommend the quad step as you have more room for error when parking on a hill. For example, if the trailer was parked on an unlevel surface and there was a dip on the side of the trailer that the door is located on, you could have issues with the triple step version reaching the ground whereas you would have plenty of extra extension...
