Notes:

  • This Roadmaster spare tire carrier is only to be used for flat towing a vehicle or carrying a hitch-mounted accessory, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier.
  • Do not use the spare tire carrier if any part of the pin hole on the carrier's receiver is over the lip of your RV's trailer hitch receiver. This can cause the shank of the spare tire carrier to break at that point
    • Measure the distance from the center of your hitch pin hole rearward until you reach the furthest points of the receiver tube. If this distance is between 3-3/16" and 3-13/16", you would not want to use the spare tire carrier
  • Use of this spare tire carrier reduces the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 33 percent.
Measurement

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier not only gives you extra room inside your RV by letting you mount your spare tire on the back, but it also provides a 2" hitch extension that lets you mount a tow bar or other hitch-mounted accessories. Flat tow your car or attach your bike rack or a cargo carrier for even more storage for your trip.

Mounting and Loading the Spare Tire Carrier

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier will make a great addition to your RV. This easy-to-use carrier simply slides into your 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. Just line up the holes on the carrier and the receiver and thread in the included anti-rattle hitch pin to secure the carrier to your RV.

Once the carrier is mounted in your hitch you can remove the safety bolt on the carrier's mast, pull the spring-loaded handle on the rear of the carrier, and pivot the carrier to either side and down to the ground.

Once the carrier is resting on the ground, you can mount your spare tire. Just roll the spare over to the carrier and align the 2 lug holes in the wheel that are most opposite each other with the corresponding slots in the wheel mount. The lug nut matrix design of the spare tire carrier fits all bolt hole patterns on 16" - 24-1/2" wheels.

Lever Moves to SideExtending Lever

Before lifting up the spare tire carrier, pull out the lever bar and secure it to the carrier mast in the extended position using the included safety pin. Then use the extension lever to raise the carrier up to the vertical position. Once the release handle locks back into place, secure the spare tire carrier with the safety bolt before driving.

On The Ground

When loaded, the spare tire carrier is still easy to lower and raise. The extension lever allows for better control of the carrier as it is being maneuvered. Lowering your carrier, loaded or unloaded, will allow access to your RV's rear compartments without having to take off your spare tire or the carrier.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Road Master Spare Tire Carrier. This is a heavy-duty, universal style spare tire carrier. Fits 16" up to 24-1/2 inch wheels, part number on it is RM-195225. What our cargo carrier's going to do is solve the problem of not having an on-board spare tire. We can put it right here on the back of the RV, that way if we do have the unfortunate event of a blowout or a flat, either roadside assistance, yourself, we can have our tire, get it changed, and get back on the road. It's also going to help us out with controlling the cost of what that tire's going to run so we don't have to worry about really high-priced things that we might find along the Interstate in emergency kind of situations. The receiver portion of the spare tire carrier, it's no slouch. This is going to offer a 10,000 pound gross towing weighting, it's also going to give us a 400 pound tongue weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here on the receiver tube opening.

Even if we're dinghy towing cars or flat towing cars, whether we've got a cargo carrier maybe that we want to put in here. Even light-duty trailers and boats if the tongue weight doesn't exceed that 400 pounds we'll be able to put it right in here. We've got nice dual 5/8" diameter pinholes here, works great with their class 3 accessories; if you want to do an anti-rattle bolt or something for a carrier. Also the Quiet Hitch, it'll go right around the end here and secure our tow bars, secure our cargo carriers and things like that to keep everything from moving around too much. This is a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening so tons of accessories out there on the market that we can put right in. The quality of construction here is pretty evident.

These tires can get pretty heavy, we all know that. You've got very nice heavy-duty thick plate steel on all the components. This is going to stay affixed to your camper, we're going to have this here so the weight's not really too much of an issue after you get it up there initially the first time. Then the welds that we're going to see all the way around here, really well done. We've also got a heavy-duty black powder-coat finish so this will stay looking good for a long time to come. Here you can see the anti-rattle bolt, this does an excellent job of keeping our spare tire carrier nice and steady while we're heading down the road.

We don't have any of that wiggling, we don't have any of that shifting back here. What this does is it draws the shank of the carrier right over against the receiver tube of the hitch, it's going to keep everything nice and steady. Show you here. Loosen it up just a touch. You can see with the bolt loose.

See how much movement and play that there'd be there Just be a less than ideal situation heading down the road. With our anti-rattle bolt torqued back down to specification, here you can see, right back, nice and steady, ready to head down the road. Then for securing it on the other side, we'll just insert the clip right through the pre-drilled hole in our bolt. When we do have a flat and need to get to our spare it's going to be really easy to do. We're going to take a 19mm socket and first loosen the safety bolt on the back. With our bolt removed we'll begin to lift our arm, or our level into its upright position here. We've got a pin that has a clip attached to it, like one of the D-clips. Just extend our arm up there, get it locked back into position with the clip, lift the pin lever here on the backside. Then you can see here, even with the ladder on the back we've got clearance on the backside to lower it down. It allows us to go both directions here, so no matter if we needed access into the engine compartment on the back or there's a storage compartment on this side, or on that side, or if our ladder was larger, if we had a grill on the side, this gives us full flexibility of going either direction with it so we don't have to worry about interference. Just lift the lever, allow the pin to fall back into place on the backside, we then re-insert our safety bolt. The pin holds it into position so we don't have to worry about holding this here while we're trying to get our bolt installed or anything like that. We'll tighten that down, lower our handle, and we're ready to head right back down the road . just like that. Here you can see we've got a dual hole setup on our shank. We've got the option of using the first hole as long as the end of our receiver tube opening is going to come past that second hole. If it doesn't completely cover our hole, then we're going to use the one in the front. You simply slide the shank in, line up our pinholes, and thread in our bolt. Here on the backside of the carrier, you can see why they'll go anywhere from 16 up to 24" in rim width. We're going to have two fixed holes here, and then we'll use the opposing side slot for whatever is going to match up with our tire the best. For our larger tires with the bigger bolt pattern we're going to be using this one and this one. For our more smaller tires that have a narrower bolt pattern, we'll be using the opposite set. Very universal, those are going to be able to go in out quite a bit to accommodate all those different rim sizes. Now that we've gone over all the great features of our carrier and we've seen how it works, let's go ahead and we'll head out. We're going to hook up our flat tow car to it and take it around and see how it works out. Now all we have to do is come out to our RV, bring our tow bar of course, we'll slide it right in allowing one of the two holes to line up, and then, of course secure it with our clip. Let's go ahead and get our car hooked up, and of course this could just as easily be a cargo carrier, we could be putting our ball mount in here, getting it secured so we can hook up our trailer or our boat. Whatever your situation is, just a really simple addition to use. Here you can see as we're cruising around, we just don't have any shifting or any movement at all out of the spare tire carrier. It's really a great, solid choice for transportation. Now that we've had a good look at it and we've seen how useful it is with having our spare tire handy at all times, that's going to complete today's look at the Road Master Spare Tire Carrier, part number RM-195225.

The Roadmaster tire carrier arrived as was predicted by UPS. On a rainy day my RV was in the driveway so my UPS driver slid the package under the back of the RV to keep it out of the rain. Shout out to our UPS driver. All parts accounted for and it went together smoothly. All of the tools were spelled out in the instructions. A couple of the sockets should have been listed as “long” sockets. Anyways, easy assembly. Tire mounted to the plate with ease (19.5” wheel). Very heavy wheel / tire combo but the lift with the rod on the carrier is effortless. I mounted the bike rack behind the wheel and it fits perfect. 654341

Very high quality tire mount. My only complaint about the tire mount (and I wish Roadmaster would make this change....are you listening Roadmaster?) is the fact that both of the hitch receiver holes are threaded! The threaded hitch receiver bolt with the hairpin clip does act like an anti-rattle securing bolt, however, it is not anti-theft! I purchased Roadmaster Hitch Lock which does not work with this tire mount. I will be also attaching a Roadmaster All-Terrain Tow Bar to the end of this tire mount, and I am concerned that someday when I come back to my motorhome, the tire mount and tow bar will be gone! I would rather that Roadmaster included an anti-rattle clamp or something different besides a threaded bolt, so that an anti-theft hitch lock could be used. 469762

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier is well engineered and constructed. Instructions were easy to follow, and the installation was relatively smooth. You do need several socket sizes which may not be in everyones toolbox though. The carrier is expensive, but being able to carry a spare and to easily remove it from the carrier when needed is worth the expense in my opinion. 502325

Installed the carrier on my Leisure Unity motor home. Has adequate clearance to back of motor home. Roadmaster was extremely helpful in supplying drawings and needed information. Seems to be very stable and easy to install or remove spare tire. A bit limited in ground clearance but carrier design and manufacture are excellent. Would be great if Roadmaster included a method to relocate license plate. I used a mount from RockHard 4X4. Very pleased with the final installation. 612356

The product has held up well, we haven't needed the spare tire it's carrying yet, but it's there when we need it. The handle and hinge make it fairly easy to handle the weight of a large RV tire. It still takes some muscle, but nothing like lifting the tire up would be. However, we carry a 19.5" steel RV wheel and tire on it, and it's all together it's pretty heavy, perhaps 200lb, total. Our Hidden Hitch receiver ( custom to our Holiday Rambler ) was rated for 500lb of tongue weight, but this broke it in just 2000 miles of driving. This forced us to load the tire into our towed car and drive it separately from the RV for 500 miles to get to a welder that built us a brand new $1000 hitch receiver. If you use one of these, keep an eye on it and be sure your receiver is up to the task of carrying the weight. Measure the distance between this and the back of the RV and if it starts to sag, get the receiver looked at ASAP. 250021

I received the spare tire carrier and was VERY pleased at the packing inside the shipping container. No scratches or damaged items! Assembled the carrier on the back of the RV within 15 minutes...excellent instructions! My only concern is the amount of space between the RV and the spare tire. 735201

Could not get the pivot arm in the base with a plastic washer on each side. Called e-trailer and they gave me number for Roadmaster tech. Sent him photo of problem. He suggest using a long pry bar to try to force the front plate to open a little. Got a neighbor with a lot more muscle than me to put pressure on the front plate with pry bar. With his help we were able to get both plastic washers in. Front plate appeared to be the width of the plastic washer too close to back plate. Torqued up bolt and install went smoothly from then on. Works great. 732805

It’s been road tested. Works ok. The drawbacks include it’s a little difficult squaring up the bolts through rim and the frame of device. Also it weighs a lot. It would be better if it were made out of aluminum. And I can’t get my rear cargo doors open on my Sprinter. I gave up that advantage instead of getting the more expensive Aluminess device. It just is a little shy of clearing the device. 729187

This tire carrier is a beast! I have a 1999 Georgie Boy Cruise Master the tire was stored under the bed behind the water tank for 20 years. The tire ways almost 100 pounds that makes it quite awkward to get at. So I bought this hitch mounted tire carrier. It installed so easy the instructions where good but instead of hold the tire mount up and sliding the mounting hardware thew the hole i lade it on its side with the poll extended made so much easier then balancing it up right. I love it my tire is right there When / IF I need it . The only con I see is that the tow hitch is 2 inches lower now and it extends foot farther than my ladder but it would have to for the easy swing to put the tire down to the ground. 691275

I just received this product yesterday, but I can tell it is every thing I was looking for. This product is well built, easy to install and use. Also it is the only product of it's kind on the market. We may not be you average class A motor home owners, I prefer to go where others are not, and a lot of time that means no cell phone. Calling for roadside assistance to bring a tire is not and option. Like they all say, if you have a spare you will never need it. Great product 663510

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier is exactly what I expected. The product is made of strong durable steel and was easy to assemble. What makes this product so good is that you are still able to tow a vehicle, or boat, or bicycle carrier with the spare tire carrier installed. The representative that helped me place the order was very professional and supplied me with the answers to the questions that I had about the product. Thank you very much for the fast service in sending the product out to me. 640171

Price can't be beat. While you're at it, be sure to order a tire cover. Got mine at Tirecoverpro.com. 556671

  • Choosing Between Roadmaster Spare Tire Carriers RM-195225 and RM-195125
The Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225 pivots down 90-degrees as shown in the photo, but specific rear door clearance on your RV would depend on several factors so we cannot guarantee your rear doors would still be able to open. The things that matter are the tire size on the RV and of course the spare, the hitch height and the RV's own stance above ground, which is a function of the total load in it. Normally at the rear of RVs the license plate bracket is to the side and not centered at the rear which is why the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225 does not have a license plate bracket. I attached a couple pictures that show this installed on RVs that have their license plates on the driver side.

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for Class C Motorhome
We don't carry a bumper mounted spare tire carrier capable of the weight of a Class C Motorhome spare tire, however, we do have a hitch mounted option. The Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier w/ 2" Receiver Opening # RM-195225 is an ideal fit for your application. It does require a 2 inch hitch receiver, but it gives you a functional way for one person to load and unload a large spare safely.

  • Hitch Spare Tire and Cargo Carrier Solution Recommendation
If you have a sturdy hitch one solution is the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier w/ 2" Receiver Opening # RM-195225 and then using a cargo carrier in the hitch opening like the # C18152 which is a non-folding carrier that will fit the 2 inch hitch. This setup will cut your hitch capacity in at least half so please do not try to carry anything too heavy if you go this route.

It is the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier w/ 2" Receiver Opening - 2" Hitches # RM-195225 and is made for RV. This is made to maintain the use of the hitch for mounting accessories or flat towing, but not for towing a trailer. It holds 16 inch to 24-1/2 inch spares with any bolt hole pattern. This will allow rear door access to your Dodge Trademan Camper Van. I recommend using the...
