Roadmaster RV Cargo - RM-195225

The sturdy Roadmaster spare tire carrier allows you to carry a spare tire for your RV or motor home while retaining use of your hitch for mounting accessories or flat towing. Holds 16" to 24-1/2" spares with any bolt hole pattern.

Features:

  • Sturdy spare tire carrier holds a spare tire for your RV or motor home
    • 2" Receiver hitch allows you to simultaneously connect a tow bar, bike rack, or other hitch-mounted accessory
  • Carrier pivots down to the ground for ease of use and access to rear compartments or engine
    • Spring-loaded handle makes it easy to pivot carrier down and secure it back in place
  • 2 Separate pin holes let you change the length of the shank
  • Built-in safety cable connection tabs allow for quick hook-up and release
  • Anti-rattle hitch pin secures carrier to RV's hitch and helps to eliminate rattle and play in the connection
  • Black powder coated steel is durable and corrosion resistant

Specs:

  • Application: 2" x 2" trailer hitch receivers
    • Maximum 10" spacing between rear of RV and hitch pin hole
  • Fits 16" - 24-1/2" wheels
    • Compatible with all wheel bolt hole patterns
  • Receiver opening of carrier: 2" x 2"
  • Maximum flat towing capacity: 10,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 400 lbs

Notes:

  • This Roadmaster spare tire carrier is only to be used for flat towing a vehicle or carrying a hitch-mounted accessory, such as a bike rack or a cargo carrier.
  • Do not use the spare tire carrier if any part of the pin hole on the carrier's receiver is over the lip of your RV's trailer hitch receiver. This can cause the shank of the spare tire carrier to break at that point.
  • Use of this spare tire carrier reduces the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 33 percent.

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier not only gives you extra room inside your RV by letting you mount your spare tire on the back, but it also provides a 2" hitch extension that lets you mount a tow bar or other hitch-mounted accessories. Flat tow your car or attach your bike rack or a cargo carrier for even more storage for your trip.

Mounting and Loading the Spare Tire Carrier

The Roadmaster spare tire carrier will make a great addition to your RV. This easy-to-use carrier simply slides into your 2" x 2" trailer hitch receiver. Just line up the holes on the carrier and the receiver and thread in the included anti-rattle hitch pin to secure the carrier to your RV.

Once the carrier is mounted in your hitch you can remove the safety bolt on the carrier's mast, pull the spring-loaded handle on the rear of the carrier, and pivot the carrier to either side and down to the ground.

Once the carrier is resting on the ground, you can mount your spare tire. Just roll the spare over to the carrier and align the 2 lug holes in the wheel that are most opposite each other with the corresponding slots in the wheel mount. The lug nut matrix design of the spare tire carrier fits all bolt hole patterns on 16" - 24-1/2" wheels.

Lever Moves to SideExtending Lever

Before lifting up the spare tire carrier, pull out the lever bar and secure it to the carrier mast in the extended position using the included safety pin. Then use the extension lever to raise the carrier up to the vertical position. Once the release handle locks back into place, secure the spare tire carrier with the safety bolt before driving.

On The Ground

When loaded, the spare tire carrier is still easy to lower and raise. The extension lever allows for better control of the carrier as it is being maneuvered. Lowering your carrier, loaded or unloaded, will allow access to your RV's rear compartments without having to take off your spare tire or the carrier.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Road Master Spare Tire Carrier. This is a heavy-duty, universal style spare tire carrier. Fits 16" up to 24-1/2 inch wheels, part number on it is RM-195225. What our cargo carrier's going to do is solve the problem of not having an on-board spare tire. We can put it right here on the back of the RV, that way if we do have the unfortunate event of a blowout or a flat, either roadside assistance, yourself, we can have our tire, get it changed, and get back on the road. It's also going to help us out with controlling the cost of what that tire's going to run so we don't have to worry about really high-priced things that we might find along the Interstate in emergency kind of situations. The receiver portion of the spare tire carrier, it's no slouch. This is going to offer a 10,000 pound gross towing weighting, it's also going to give us a 400 pound tongue weight rating, so that's the maximum downward force we can put here on the receiver tube opening.

Even if we're dinghy towing cars or flat towing cars, whether we've got a cargo carrier maybe that we want to put in here. Even light-duty trailers and boats if the tongue weight doesn't exceed that 400 pounds we'll be able to put it right in here. We've got nice dual 5/8" diameter pinholes here, works great with their class 3 accessories; if you want to do an anti-rattle bolt or something for a carrier. Also the Quiet Hitch, it'll go right around the end here and secure our tow bars, secure our cargo carriers and things like that to keep everything from moving around too much. This is a 2" by 2" receiver tube opening so tons of accessories out there on the market that we can put right in. The quality of construction here is pretty evident.

These tires can get pretty heavy, we all know that. You've got very nice heavy-duty thick plate steel on all the components. This is going to stay affixed to your camper, we're going to have this here so the weight's not really too much of an issue after you get it up there initially the first time. Then the welds that we're going to see all the way around here, really well done. We've also got a heavy-duty black powder-coat finish so this will stay looking good for a long time to come. Here you can see the anti-rattle bolt, this does an excellent job of keeping our spare tire carrier nice and steady while we're heading down the road.

We don't have any of that wiggling, we don't have any of that shifting back here. What this does is it draws the shank of the carrier right over against the receiver tube of the hitch, it's going to keep everything nice and steady. Show you here. Loosen it up just a touch. You can see with the bolt loose.

See how much movement and play that there'd be there Just be a less than ideal situation heading down the road. With our anti-rattle bolt torqued back down to specification, here you can see, right back, nice and steady, ready to head down the road. Then for securing it on the other side, we'll just insert the clip right through the pre-drilled hole in our bolt. When we do have a flat and need to get to our spare it's going to be really easy to do. We're going to take a 19mm socket and first loosen the safety bolt on the back. With our bolt removed we'll begin to lift our arm, or our level into its upright position here. We've got a pin that has a clip attached to it, like one of the D-clips. Just extend our arm up there, get it locked back into position with the clip, lift the pin lever here on the backside. Then you can see here, even with the ladder on the back we've got clearance on the backside to lower it down. It allows us to go both directions here, so no matter if we needed access into the engine compartment on the back or there's a storage compartment on this side, or on that side, or if our ladder was larger, if we had a grill on the side, this gives us full flexibility of going either direction with it so we don't have to worry about interference. Just lift the lever, allow the pin to fall back into place on the backside, we then re-insert our safety bolt. The pin holds it into position so we don't have to worry about holding this here while we're trying to get our bolt installed or anything like that. We'll tighten that down, lower our handle, and we're ready to head right back down the road . just like that. Here you can see we've got a dual hole setup on our shank. We've got the option of using the first hole as long as the end of our receiver tube opening is going to come past that second hole. If it doesn't completely cover our hole, then we're going to use the one in the front. You simply slide the shank in, line up our pinholes, and thread in our bolt. Here on the backside of the carrier, you can see why they'll go anywhere from 16 up to 24" in rim width. We're going to have two fixed holes here, and then we'll use the opposing side slot for whatever is going to match up with our tire the best. For our larger tires with the bigger bolt pattern we're going to be using this one and this one. For our more smaller tires that have a narrower bolt pattern, we'll be using the opposite set. Very universal, those are going to be able to go in out quite a bit to accommodate all those different rim sizes. Now that we've gone over all the great features of our carrier and we've seen how it works, let's go ahead and we'll head out. We're going to hook up our flat tow car to it and take it around and see how it works out. Now all we have to do is come out to our RV, bring our tow bar of course, we'll slide it right in allowing one of the two holes to line up, and then, of course secure it with our clip. Let's go ahead and get our car hooked up, and of course this could just as easily be a cargo carrier, we could be putting our ball mount in here, getting it secured so we can hook up our trailer or our boat. Whatever your situation is, just a really simple addition to use. Here you can see as we're cruising around, we just don't have any shifting or any movement at all out of the spare tire carrier. It's really a great, solid choice for transportation. Now that we've had a good look at it and we've seen how useful it is with having our spare tire handy at all times, that's going to complete today's look at the Road Master Spare Tire Carrier, part number RM-195225.

The product has held up well, we haven't needed the spare tire it's carrying yet, but it's there when we need it. The handle and hinge make it fairly easy to handle the weight of a large RV tire. It still takes some muscle, but nothing like lifting the tire up would be. However, we carry a 19.5" steel RV wheel and tire on it, and it's all together it's pretty heavy, perhaps 200lb, total. Our Hidden Hitch receiver ( custom to our Holiday Rambler ) was rated for 500lb of tongue weight, but this broke it in just 2000 miles of driving. This forced us to load the tire into our towed car and drive it separately from the RV for 500 miles to get to a welder that built us a brand new $1000 hitch receiver. If you use one of these, keep an eye on it and be sure your receiver is up to the task of carrying the weight. Measure the distance between this and the back of the RV and if it starts to sag, get the receiver looked at ASAP. 250021

The Roadmaster Hitch Spare Tire Carrier is a great addition to my 33' Thor Class C Motorhome. The carrier allows for space to be saved in one of my storage compartments so I can store other related camping equipment. The design makes for easy lowering or raising of the spare tire. I have had three back surgeries so this is a great addition. My order was backordered but I was kept informed of the status and was notified when the order was shipped. The product arrived packed securely and the instructions were easy to follow for installation on my hitch. It works great with the vehicle I flat tow behind the Motorhome. I am very please with the product and the service provided by etrailer on my order. It is a great piece of mind carrying my spare tire when I travel. 258057

We fitted the Roadmaster Spare Tire Carrier to our Tiffin Breeze to give us the comfort of having a fully fitted spare wheel during our Alaskan adventure. Whilst we did not damage any tires on that trip we have now returned to Australia with our Tiffin and will be travelling in remote areas where a spare is sensible risk management. etrailer once again were excellent to deal with - good price, quick and efficient service. 246376

Product works as advertised and I am generally pleased. However if you have a diesel engine with rear engine access and 22.5" tires you will not be able to open rear engine access hood. The tire carrier does pivot and lower in either direction but with large tires it does not lower enough to open engine access to check fluids. Demonstration video was made with much smaller tires. 250351

Well built carrier. Very strong and easy to use. The few questions I have are " could the wheel mounting bolts be installed back to front so that the wheel is fitting flush against the carrier plate ?" and " do you have a better design for the swivel safety wing bolt as it needs a tool to loosen it because of the lock washer grip when tightened down ?" Thanks, John D. 439012

Do you have a question about this RV Cargo?

  • Spare Tire Carrier for 2016 Thor Motor Coach Class C
  • I have a solution for you, but unfortunately, we do not have any frame or bumper mount tire carriers that are capable of carrying a Class C tire. For a motorhome tire carrier, you can use the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225. This hitch mounted carrier has a 2 inch receiver opening that can be used for flat towing or carrying a bike rack or other hitch mounted accessory. I have attached a review video and installation instructions for this carrier for you.

  • Availability Of Folding Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier To Allow Rear Door Access
  • There is only one hitch mounted spare tire carrier I know of that has a folding option. It is the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier w/ 2" Receiver Opening - 2" Hitches # RM-195225 and is made for RV. This is made to maintain the use of the hitch for mounting accessories or flat towing, but not for towing a trailer. It holds 16 inch to 24-1/2 inch spares with any bolt hole pattern. This will allow rear door access to your Dodge Trademan Camper Van. I recommend using the...

I did notice that the Travato came with a hitch, so your best bet may be to use the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225. Not only will it carry a spare tire, it has a 2" x 2" receiver attached so you can attach a bike rack or cargo carrier if you'd like. I've added a link to a video review of the carrier for you to take a look at.

  • We don't carry a bumper mounted spare tire carrier capable of the weight of a Class C Motorhome spare tire, however, we do have a hitch mounted option. It does require a 2 inch hitch receiver, but it gives you a functional way for one person to load and unload a large spare safely. • If you look at the diagram I've provided, it'll be easier to understand. Measure the distance from the center of your hitch pin hole rearward until you reach the furthest point of the receiver tube. If this distance is between 3-3/16 and 3-13/16 inches, you wouldn't want to use the spare tire carrier as the weight of the carrier and tire would be resting upon the weakest point of the shank which could break. Otherwise, the carrier would work great for you.

  • No one who has left a review at this point has mentioned having a Roadtrek RV. If the hitch is a 2 inch then I can't see why it would not work. Having the hitch off center, while odd, would not prevent the use of the Roadmaster Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # RM-195225. To deter tire theft I recommend a wheel lock such as # 4324.
