Spare Carrier Recommendation for Rear of Motorhome that Allows Flat Towed Vehicle
Updated 04/15/2026 | Published 04/11/2026 >
Question:
we need spare tire options for a Thor Chateau 31W Class C motorhome. The spare is on a 16-17inch wheel and weighs about 75 lbs. we will be towing a Ford Bronco and using a 4inch riser hitch to level our tow bar. what suggestions do you have? On our previous 5th wheel I installed Safety Strutsinch to the camper bumper and it worked great for carrying a spare tire and a gen box. thanks for your time! David

Hey David, the Roadmaster Spare Tire Mount part # RM-195225 that you referenced would be a really great option for you. This will be able to carry the spare you have and also has a hitch opening behind it for your tow bar so that you can continue to flat tow your vehicle at same time. Were you hoping for a bumper mounted option instead though?

This worked well, and went together fairly smoothly. I did install plastic shim washers on the pivot bolt at the base of the upright section to keep it from banging around, but that was no big deal. Only real difficulty was that the hitch extension is on a 2” drop from your motorhome, and that was a clearance issue at times on our Class C. Also needed short safety-cable extensions for the install.

Hi I used Rm195255 hitch mount Roadmaster spare tire carrier. Carried a heavy class A truck tire with no problem. Towed a car behind with no problem. Round trip to Alaska no issues. Your class C tires are much lighter and you may not need such a heavy carrier. I would be sure the rear bumper is truly constructed like a bumper rather than a hose carrier. You do know that the hitch mount is rated to bear a load. Happy RV ing!

I bought this setup for my F350 two seasons ago and it's been a Godsend. I run 37x12.5 R20's on the F350. As you can imagine, these are large, very heavy tires. I was looking for a way to free up space in the bed for our gear as we travel between western MT and northern MN pretty much every other month and didn't want to be constantly pulling a trailer. Although I've never pulled a trailer with the setup as the drop needed for my F350 significantly lowers the amount of tongue weight recommended I don't think you can go wrong. The assembly is easy and the technicians are very helpful if needed. The only negative comment I have is that I have a 2.5" receiver on the truck so the hitch pin supplied is 1/2" too short - I make it by tightening the hitch pin as much as possible and running a heavy gauge wire through the hole at the end as a safety pin, 25k miles and no issues. Hope this helps.

Is there a folding bumper mount available? One that swings left and right or swings down?
