Videos are provided as a guide only. Refer to manufacturer installation instructions and specs for complete information.
Today we're going to be taking a look at our 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier. It's both 1 1/4" and 2" hitches. It's part number is C18145. This hitch mounted, basket style cargo carrier is going to allow you to tote extra gear. This is going to free up space in your vehicle for pets or passengers and it's also going to allow you to keep muddy and dirty items outside of your vehicle, so it's not dirtying up the interior. The raised side rails that go all the way around the carrier are going to help to hold the gear in place, as well as the steel construction and the corrosion resistant finish. It's going to allow you to connect anywhere on your carrier that you'd like with a strap or a tie down without having to worry about scratching the finish and creating places where corrosion might occur. The carrier has a nice open floor design.
This is going to provide stability for your larger items and also help the grime and gunk from building up in the floor of the carrier. Curt's also going to offer you a nice limited one year warranty on their product. The carrier's designed for use in class one, class two or class three receivers. A class one receiver, we're going to have a 200 pound weight capacity. Then the class two, a 350 pound weight capacity. And then our class three, all the way up to 500 pound weight capacity. The anti rattle bolt is going to be included.
It comes with a washer, lock washer, the anti rattle bolt itself and a clip for security. Today, we're going to be installing the carrier into a 2"x2" hitch, so we're going to use the converter or the adapter that converts it up to that size. This is included with the carrier. And inside, you'll see it's got a little injection molded cylindrical peg. That's going to slide right into the hole that's below our threaded pin hole. So, we'll bring that down, slide it right on there. And now, we'll install it on the vehicle for you.
So, we'll slide the shank of the carrier right into the receiver tube of our hitch. We want to line the pin hole up with the hitch pin hole that's in the receiver. We'll then thread in our anti rattle bolt and tighten it down using our wrench. We'll then secure it with our clip here on the side, and just like that, we're ready to hit the road. As you can see, using the anti rattle, anti sway pin there is really going to help keep our cargo carrier secure and take all the play out of our shank. Now that we've got our cargo carrier installed, I'll show you what it looks like loaded down with gear. We're going to take it through our slalom course, and our bumps course to let you see what it looks like in action as well. As you can see as we drive through our slalom course, we've got very little side to side movement in our carrier.
As we go through our alternating and solid bumps, you can see that anti rattle bolt doing its job and not allowing your carrier to move around too much. That will complete today's look at the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier, part number C18145. .

After assembling I tried to install the carrier on my Malibu. DID NOT FIT !!! I had to order an extension to be able to make it work. Another $30. I thought that after inputting type of car that items ordered from you we're matched to fit my car. You should make it clear. Now I'll try to get my $20 rebate. Wish me luck !! 538910
The # C18145 isnt a vehicle specific item. This particular cargo carrier has a fairly short shank, there needs to be at least 7-1/4 inches of space between the hitch pin hole in the receiver tube and the furthest rearward point of the back bumper in order for the carrier to be compatible. If that distance is greater than 7-1/4 inches, the carrier wont fit. Ill link to a help article that explains how to take that measurement.

The 20X48 Curt cargo carrier is very well made. I bought it because the etrailer.com video convinced me that with the use of the locking pin, loaded on my 1-1/4" hitch, the carrier would not do a lot of moving and shaking when traveling. The cargo carrier lives up to this claim however I do have one gripe: This carrier is not actually 20X48"; the interior dimension is really 17-1/2X46". I had previously bought an aluminum 20X60" carrier from my local Northern Tool but I returned it because I had to use a 2" hitch adapter and it made the cargo carrrier very unstable, however, the actual inside dimensions where as advertised: 20X60! 22876
Thanks for the post - I also just assembled the aluminum 20X60 carrier from Northern Tool and found it very unstable with the 2-1.25 adapter. It also put it more than 12 from the bumper. Will be returning the carrier from Northern Tool and ordering this one.

I purchased this cargo carrier to go behind my Volkswagen beetle. I have a small motorcycle trailer that I pull behind my car, but it doesn't fit into a single parking space and it's hard to back it up because the tongue is so short. i I wanted something that would allow me to transport my products to the weekly farmers market without pulling the trailer. The carrier did what I needed it to do and I am happy with my purchase. It's one of the smaller sized carriers, which works well behind my smaller car. The carrier was easy to assemble and the instructions were clear, but the diagram was very small. It's fairly lightweight, so it wasn't difficult for me to put on and take off by myself. I 390831
I lost it in the Sonoma Valley fire in October, along with absolutely everything else I owned, except my car and hitch. I’ve been missing the carrier, especially now that camping season is here. I will say that it rode too low behind my VW bug and scraped bottom at times. I would need a riser for my hitch if I were to buy another carrier. Also, my load sat right at the exhaust pipe, so my plastic cargo box and camping tent melted from the heat. I think raising the carrier would prevent that.
I am very sorry to hear about the fire and I am glad you are okay. If you need a new carrier that has more ground clearance for your class one 1 1/4" hitch on your VW bug I recommend part # C18110. This Curt cargo carrier has an angled shank to elevate the platform a bit for ground clearance and easier loading. This carrier allows for up to 300 lbs of cargo which is a 200 lbs less than the cargo carrier you had part # C18145. We currently do not have an adapter that will elevate the cargo carrier for a class 1 hitch. If you need a new cargo bag I recommend part # 59102. Since the load does sit so close to the exhaust pipe I would recommend using an exhaust pipe tip that turns down such as part # MF35179. To choose the correct tip, you'll need to measure the outside diameter of your exhaust pipe. Most of the tips are weld-on applications, so you'd need to have a professional welder install the tip for you.

Looks like a good cargo carrier. Put it together last night. A few small issues: (1) picture on outside of box shows bolts...nut on bottom vs top) different from instructions (2) cannot assemble per instructions...not hard to figure out, but following instruction steps will not work (3) web site says max distance from center of hitch pin hole to closest edge of carrier is 6 inches; it is actually 5 1/2 and I needed to flex carrier frame a bit to make it work (4) with paint on the hitch, would not go into the 1 1/4 van hitch; had to take paint off. Details...but room for some small improvements to make customer life easier. 106658

Bought to use on a 2016 Subaru Forester. I like the overall size. It's not as wide or wider than the Forester and I can still easily access the rear hatch. With the anti-rattle bolt, it is really stable. Now the reason for the 4 stars and not 5. I added some additional reflective tape on the side corners because at night, in a dark parking lot, it is not easy to see. But what is really annoying is the carrier is at the same height as the exhaust tip. I thought that if there was an issue with this there would be something in the reviews (which there was no mention of this being a possible issue). On a trip from southwest Ohio to Minneapolis I learned the hard way that this is a serious issue. The exhaust gasses melted a hole in the cargo bag I was using to protect gifts from the elements. Thankfully the condensation that built up in the bag kept the cardboard box the bag melted to from possibly igniting. Things were damp, but not ruined. For many vehicles, you will need an adapter to raise the carrier up and away from the exhaust. You could use a turn-down exhaust tip, but this may just make the hot gasses hit your cargo from a different angle. The second time I used with a Curt adapter with rubbermaid tubs and had no issues. 464179

This basket is TOUGH! It holds a huge 6p tent, a 2p tent, a 60 pound deep cycle battery, a bag of tools, and an air mattress when we tent camp around the country. This basket has seen about 8,000 miles across 24 states. It's scraped the ground over 100 times and the bolts got tweaked. I sawed them off and replaced them with round headed bolts upside down so it will skid on the round head instead of the ground catching the threads and bending the bolts. I seriously cannot believe this basket is still intact! It's been through absolute hell and it's held up. It's due for a painting and she'll be like new. On my 2011 Yaris, it blocks the license plate so I could potentially be giving a bored cop a reason to pull me over. Sometimes I zip tie my license plate to the basket when I'm in a bigger city. At night, I use one of those 12 volt license plate lights and connect that to my battery in the basket. This was a great investment and I'm damn glad to have it. 489371

Excellent product. The hitch, 5" adapter, cargo carrier. Easy to put together, all the parts were there. Very fast delivery. Kudos to Lisa and E. Trailer for above and beyond products and service. I have a small car and it was packed when I went camping alone. Now daughter and I are doing a 3 week trip in June. More stuff. 338207

This carrier was perfect for our 05 Equinox. We had tried a different carrier that fits a 2" hitch and had to buy the adapter to fit our 1.25" hitch. This caused the carrier to come out way too far from the back of the vehicle and did not look safe. I found this one online and had it shipped to us within a couple of days. We just used it on our vacation and it worked perfectly. It also ended up being cheaper than the one we had bought before, not including the adapter. Saved us at least $60.00 even after paying the expedited shipping. Great product, and great communication from the seller in regards to shipping the item. 204071
Carrier still works great. Just used it last week on our vacation and works perfectly. I drove a second car behind my husband on this trip and was able to keep an eye on it this time. The items in the carrier did not bounce or shift at all.

Good Product; I intend to use it to carry an electric generator for my Ford van that I had converted into a very small RV. As a word of caution for the next buyers and suggestions for the manufacturer, the assembly instructions leave a lot to be desired. You better have 13, 14, &17 mm wrenches and also sockets (to speed things up). All the nuts and bolts except for the hitch pin are metric. The hitch pin is English. I don't assemble assemblies everyday so it took a little fumbling before I figured out the nuts and bolts were metric. How much ink would it take to tell me the assembly tools required? Also, identifying bolts with numbers such as "M10*60(10) hexagonal bolt" and "M10" locking nut doesn't help. But my biggest complaint is that there is a top and bottom to the lower two frames that is not at all obvious. The only instruction that attempts to tell you this is a picture and note in the upper right corner of the instructions that says "Tube must be flush with top of plate for correct assembly." When I was done I intended to have the "tube flush with the top plate". But that isn't what is really required. The "lip" MUST be down the "Connection profiles" to fit. What a crazy name for what I would have called a "Connection Tee". What is should say is that the lower two frames must have the lip on the bar that bolts to the Receiver Bar pointed down. Or better yet, how about a little $.05 sticker that says "UP" stuck on the up side of each of the two lower frames. 85638

I wanted a small trailer for my 1 1/4" hitch on my Prius V to fit two Rubbermaid Roughneck Trash Barrels for trips to the town Transfer Station. The 17.5" aprox depth of the basket of this trailer fits the bottom of the barrels just right. I judged that a 60" wide would not fit three barrels anyway and that might be too heavy a load, so the 47" x 17.5" inside dimension of this was best. The attached photos show two barrels in the trailer. Some have complained that the assembly instructions are lacking. Here are some tips: The bottom platform pieces should be placed so that the tubing is flush at the central rails, the flat rails with 4 holes that bolt to the center 1 1/4" square tube are a bit wider than the square tubing that make up the bottom platform and the extra lip should point down so you have a nice flush platform in the bottom of the tray where you will be putting stuff. If you have those pieces upside down, you would have a little ridge sticking up on each side of the central square tube and that would not work well as well as the bottom of the tray, and the "T" connectors would not fit correctly. Group the fasteners and you will have three bunches (manufacturer had the nut/bolt/washers assembled together in my shipment) A) 18 small diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the flat A shaped braces which hold the bottom platform halves to the top railing halves. B) 8 medium diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the fore and aft "T" connectors C) 4 large diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those hold the left half and right half of the platform together. Using the smallest bolts, fasten the "A" braces to the bottom platform halves, then bolt to the top platform halves, leave them loose with about 1/8" of play. Now you have two half assemblies of the bottom tray. Place the middle 1 1/4" square "hitch" piece between the two half assemblies and line them up but do not put the 4 big bolts in yet. Put the two "T" connectors at the back and hitch side. The "T" connector with the reflector goes at the back, and the reflector points toward traffic. The other one goes on the hitch side. Loosely bolt the "T" connectors using the 8 medium bolts and then fasten the two sides together snugly with the 4 big bolts. Then tighten all other fasteners. A ratchet and metric sockets and an adjustable wrench to hold the nut while tightening the bolt head is much handier than two wrenches. 429557

This is an updated review now that I have had the chance to use my carrier a few times. I'm keeping the rating the same because the issues I've had have been because of the way I use it and not because of the quality of the product. Be aware that if you are using this carrier on a lower profile vehicle you will be more or less confined to flat pavement, including any kind of raised driveway or parking lot entrance. I even had it scrape over a speed bump under load. May not be a big deal in some parts of the country but I live in the mountains and there is a lot of up and down terrain to scrape on. If that could be an issue for you as it was for me then do yourself a favor and spend a little more for a carrier with a raised shank. I nearly broke the thing off the first time I used it just pulling into raised parking lot from the road. I was fortunate that I was just testing it out completely unloaded so the back of the vehicle wasn’t squatted down from the weight that would normally be on it. I ended up fixing it myself by chopping main support up and welding in some extra square tube pieces to raise the basket 3 inches. Fixed the problem, but I wish I had realized just how far down it hung. Again, not the problem of the carrier, but my specific setup and location. Just something to think about before buying. 42378

Received the cargo rack exactly on the day promised. Followed the instructions and had the rack put together and installed on my Dodge Journey hitch in less than an hour. While an adjustable wrench could be used (per instructions), a ratchet set makes the job very easy (there are a lot of nuts and bolts to install and tighten). A very nice touch was the manufacturer screwed all of the bolts, washers and nuts together in sets which made it very easy to check for missing parts and to complete the installation quickly. Impressed with the quality of the rack, the ease of putting it on and taking it off of the hitch, and the ability to tighten it down on the hitch nice and snug. One concern I have for my particular setup is the twin exhausts on the Dodge Journey blow straight into the back side of the rack with about 10 inches of clearance. Planning on attaching metal flashing across the back of the rack to deflect the exhaust when carrying suitcases or other items where heat might be a concern. I am very happy with the purchase and feel that this rack is a great value based on the purchase price. 207752

I am extremely happy with my purchase. I bought this for a cross-country family move. At such a reasonable price, I was surprised at how heavy and sturdy this carrier was. Assembly was quite easy, with directions I could understand. Now that I've moved, I'm looking forward to future uses on fishing trips and tailgating at college football games!! 401513

My first impression was not so good. The box arrived by UPS with two tears. Fortunately, the parts were rubbed but not damaged. Things went well until I counted out the pieces and found myself short 6*35 bolts, washers, and lock nuts. Another issue was the fit of the adapter for 2" receiver. I attempted to fit it to a new hitch 2". It was a no-go without the application of a dead blow hammer. These items are not the end of the world by any means but they kind of reduce the good feeling you get with new equipment. 3.5 stars at the most. 473178

I was looking for a basket style hitch carrier that was not too big. Most carriers I saw were 60 inches long. This one is 48 inches and was just what I was looking for. I like everything about this carrier: the looks, style, size and weight. I will be using it to carry beach equipment during our summer vacations to the Outer Banks, NC. The assembly instruction page leaves alot to be desired as there is one picture trying to explain how to completely assemble the carrier. You can figure it out, but will take some time and multiple looks at the one diagram. It took me about 1.5 hours to assemble. Some other facts for those of you looking for a hitch carrier to use on a Jeep Wrangler. I have a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited with the factory installed trailer towing package & 2 inch receiver. You have to use a hitch extender with this particular carrier in order to clear the rear mounted spare tire. The JK Wranglers need approx. 12 inches out from the center of the hitch pin hole. Also, you will not be able to fully open the tailgate as the tire will hit the carrier. If you went with a flat carrier (not the basket style of this Curt one), you most likely would be able to open the tailgate and clear a flat carrier. Troop, the customer service rep who assisted me with my order was fantastic. 85560
I have a carrier similar to this one.. What I want to know is if anyone knows where I can get a hard sided container to fit in the carrier that can be locked to the carrier??
-- comment by: sassy - 11/30/2013You can check out truck bed tool box manufacturers. There are some cargo carriers out there that have matching boxes, but this is not one of them. However, with the inside dimensions on the carrier, it can be pretty easy to find an aluminum or molded ABS plastic box that will fit. Part DZ6535P from DeeZee would fint inside this Curt carrier.

This turned out to be a great product, very solid once put together. And that is the key issue, putting it together. The directions are almost useless. I would like to greatly thanks the folks who wrote reviews and gave info on putting this product together. The three top tidbits of information were: 1) The "lip" MUST be down for the "Connection profiles" to fit (try putting the two connection parts (one has the reflector on it) onto the bottom frame and you will see how it fits together; 2) You better have 13, 14, &17 mm wrenches and also sockets (to speed things up). All the nuts and bolts except for the hitch pin are metric; and 3) Do not tighten down any of the bolts until you fully assemble the carrier. If you do, you will not be able to get the pieces to fit. Thanks so much to the reviewers who took the time to give such great advice. It is time consuming to put this carrier together, but not difficult if you follow above. It looks good once assembled and should work just fine, haven't put it on my trailer yet. 194610

I am using this on a 2012 Toyota Prius. I have it paired with a Curt 1 1/4 inch hitch C11276. Overall, this is a fair addition for this vehicle. It carries a good amount of weight, and is sturdy and well made. The only drawback is how low to the ground it sits when used with the Prius. There is very little clearance between the bottom of the carrier and the ground when loaded. I need to be very careful when going from a flat onto an incline, or over speed bumps. I have had scraping several times, even when going slowly and carefully. I will be replacing this carrier with a raised shank model in the near future to alleviate this situation. If you're considering this carrier for a Gen III Prius, I would suggest you look at the model with the raised shank (C18100 - https://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Cargo-Carrier/Curt/C18110.html) you'll get an extra few inches under the rear edge of the carrier, and it will make you happy! 483581

I bought this last year for a 2,000 mile road trip and have used it a few times since. It was very easy to put together and slipped right into the receiver hitch with no problem. After the trip I am very impressed especially at this price point. It showed no signs of use such as dents, bends or chipped finish. It held up quite well to the weather and 150lbs or so we had on it and it continues to look almost new. I expect several years of use from this product and highly recommend it. One word of caution: the exhaust on the CRV blows directly onto the right corner and is hot enough to melt a cooler as we found out. I took some hardware cloth and sandwiched several folds of aluminum foil between 2 pieces and cut to fit the back, around the corner and up the side approximately 1ft. No further problems. 545583
If the carrier or objects carried on it will be within 12-18 inches of the exhaust pipe, theres a danger that objects on the carrier can be damaged from the heat of the exhaust. In order to determine if a given carrier will be far enough from the exhaust, youd need to take some measurements. Measure half the width of the carrier 24 inches in this case to the right of the center of the hitch. Add the appropriate inches of height if the carrier has an angled shank that raised it by a few inches. Then take the clearance measurement listed in the product description. This will give you a good idea of where the carrier will sit in regards to the exhaust. In many cases, an exhaust shop can install a downturned tip that will direct the heat downward.

The product assembled with no issues and the bolts lined up with the pre-drilled holes fairly well. I tried it on our RV travel trailer (1 & 1/4 inch hitch) and it is very tight. However, on a 2 inch Jeep Grand Cherokee hitch it wobbles appreciably. The wiggle at the hitch is about 1/8 inch and at the end of the carrier a full inch. I suspect it will do better with a sleeve insert in the 2 inch hitch that adapts a 1 & 1/4 carrier but I have not tried that yet. The adapter that comes with the stinger to adapt to 2 inches is plastic does cover the whole length and that is probably why it wobbles. 411557
It works fine thanks.

This cargo carrier has been great; we've used it for several long-distance trips with luggage in a soft-sided waterproof bag, as well as for camping trips with gear stowed in hard plastic containers. It sits just far enough out that we can open the hatch on our Acura MDX without removing the cargo if it's shorter than about 16". My seven-year-old helped me assemble it, so it wasn't hard to put together. 587644

Quick shipping. Packing by Curt is always excellent, my Curt hitch was also packed well. Like the Curt hitch installation and in this case assembly is easy with perfect bolt alignments. The nuts, bolts and washers come paired; bolts with washer on and nut started: this expedites assembly. The assembly instructions, 2 pages, could be better, but important assembly information is provided. You can preview the instructions online and estimate time and effort required for assembly. Not in the instructions are viable tool requirements. Tools required are: Open end/box wrenches and sockets with ratchet (I used deep sockets). Sizes required: 10mm, 14mm and 17mm. Yet to be road tested, but I am anticipating using a Curt Bike Rack Support Strap in conjunction with this carrier for additional stability. 586385

Assembly and installation were straight forward. (Good tip to leave all hardware on the basket carrier loose until fully assembled.) Getting the carrier in and out of the receiver is still a little snug, but improving with use. Primary use is for transporting fuel, cans back and forth to the gas station The luggage bag that we purchased at the same time has yet to be used but is available whenever we need covered transport for picnics, tent camping, etc. A couple of improvements would be helpful: 1. Add vertical rods with reflector tape and eye-safety capped ends that stick up above the Yaris’s trunk. The driver can then see the extent of the carrier in the rear view mirror (no backup camera): This would also remind larger vehicles that there is an object protruding from behind the Yaris that disappears below their hood when they pull up close behind. 2. Make/modify carrier designed to haul a collapsible wheel chair: roll up ramp, bracket and strap to secure the chair, all weather cover to protect the chair, reflector rods as in 1 above. 529702

I've very satisfied with this high-quality equipment. Very solid metal and well-sized bolts. The assembly was easy but the instructions were poor. (The key is starting with the correct side of the base platform. Don't begin until you know it's right.) The unit holds plenty of gear and does not block access to the rear hatch of my Honda Fit. 525558

Received the carrier today and assembled it and test mounted. Was impressed with the quality and sturdiness. Be prepared to use a ratchet, as there are many bolts and lock nuts, but that's what gives the unit strength. It took a little over an hour to assemble--not bad! 512104

I found the instruction were not very clear to understand and had to disassemble the product a few times to get the assembly right. It would be helpful if the instructions provided a picture at each step. I also found it hard to get the parts to engage and align properly. While I was able to get it all put together it took longer to assemble than installing the Class 1 trailer hitch to my car. Finally, I was able to easily over torque one of the bolts into the tubing causing it to buckle a bit and sink the bolt head into the tubing. I would have expect it to be a little more sturdy. Or give a warning about over torquing causing damage. 510886

This was the model that was recommended for my 2002 Jeep Wrangler and I cannot be more pleased. I used it yesterday to haul bags of grass clippings/leaves (20 bags) to a dumpster - 5 bags at a time. I live near a beach and will use it to carry beach chairs, umbrella, etc. The price was great, the shipment quick, and the product was exactly as advertised. 507910

IT took quite a bit of time to get this put together but once all the nuts and bolts were tightened it worked great. Our first trip was from California to Utah with a small dresser attached to the trailer. It was easy to fasten bungees, ropes and ties. We did add some reflective tape and paint to the sides and back edges but that is not necessary, just a bonus. Great product, quick shipping. 499794

One year after my purchase this is still holding up good. I use it about once a month behind my explorer with a small hitch receiver. I store it outside and it hasn't rusted. It's still solid. I've loaded it as high as my explorer on occasion (2 coolers, tent, tarps, etc), as well as used it just to go get the gas can filled. Great product and very worth the money. 497004

I have used this several times since I bought it. It give us extra storage room for the weekend getaways with the kids and dogs. Easy to put in and sturdy. With a hitch extension I can still swing open back door of the jeep. It didn’t fit together very well when we were assembling it but realized a couple things needed to be rearranged. 490508

This carrier works well. I found a tupperware bin that fits and will contain 3 five gallon buckets. I use this set up to haul compost and garden waste and anything else too dirty for the trunk. It is easy to assemble, rugged and yet light enough to easily remove and store in my shed. 471799
