Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at our 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier. It's both 1 1/4" and 2" hitches. It's part number is C18145. This hitch mounted, basket style cargo carrier is going to allow you to tote extra gear. This is going to free up space in your vehicle for pets or passengers and it's also going to allow you to keep muddy and dirty items outside of your vehicle, so it's not dirtying up the interior. The raised side rails that go all the way around the carrier are going to help to hold the gear in place, as well as the steel construction and the corrosion resistant finish. It's going to allow you to connect anywhere on your carrier that you'd like with a strap or a tie down without having to worry about scratching the finish and creating places where corrosion might occur. The carrier has a nice open floor design.

This is going to provide stability for your larger items and also help the grime and gunk from building up in the floor of the carrier. Curt's also going to offer you a nice limited one year warranty on their product. The carrier's designed for use in class one, class two or class three receivers. A class one receiver, we're going to have a 200 pound weight capacity. Then the class two, a 350 pound weight capacity. And then our class three, all the way up to 500 pound weight capacity. The anti rattle bolt is going to be included.

It comes with a washer, lock washer, the anti rattle bolt itself and a clip for security. Today, we're going to be installing the carrier into a 2"x2" hitch, so we're going to use the converter or the adapter that converts it up to that size. This is included with the carrier. And inside, you'll see it's got a little injection molded cylindrical peg. That's going to slide right into the hole that's below our threaded pin hole. So, we'll bring that down, slide it right on there. And now, we'll install it on the vehicle for you.

So, we'll slide the shank of the carrier right into the receiver tube of our hitch. We want to line the pin hole up with the hitch pin hole that's in the receiver. We'll then thread in our anti rattle bolt and tighten it down using our wrench. We'll then secure it with our clip here on the side, and just like that, we're ready to hit the road. As you can see, using the anti rattle, anti sway pin there is really going to help keep our cargo carrier secure and take all the play out of our shank. Now that we've got our cargo carrier installed, I'll show you what it looks like loaded down with gear. We're going to take it through our slalom course, and our bumps course to let you see what it looks like in action as well. As you can see as we drive through our slalom course, we've got very little side to side movement in our carrier.

As we go through our alternating and solid bumps, you can see that anti rattle bolt doing its job and not allowing your carrier to move around too much. That will complete today's look at the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier, part number C18145. .

I am extremely happy with my purchase. I bought this for a cross-country family move. At such a reasonable price, I was surprised at how heavy and sturdy this carrier was. Assembly was quite easy, with directions I could understand. Now that I've moved, I'm looking forward to future uses on fishing trips and tailgating at college football games!! 401513

This basket is TOUGH! It holds a huge 6p tent, a 2p tent, a 60 pound deep cycle battery, a bag of tools, and an air mattress when we tent camp around the country. This basket has seen about 8,000 miles across 24 states. It's scraped the ground over 100 times and the bolts got tweaked. I sawed them off and replaced them with round headed bolts upside down so it will skid on the round head instead of the ground catching the threads and bending the bolts. I seriously cannot believe this basket is still intact! It's been through absolute hell and it's held up. It's due for a painting and she'll be like new. On my 2011 Yaris, it blocks the license plate so I could potentially be giving a bored cop a reason to pull me over. Sometimes I zip tie my license plate to the basket when I'm in a bigger city. At night, I use one of those 12 volt license plate lights and connect that to my battery in the basket. This was a great investment and I'm damn glad to have it. 489371

The basket took a BEATING and it took it like a champ. I ended up selling it on [used item site] when I upgraded vehicles to a very happy customer.

My first impression was not so good. The box arrived by UPS with two tears. Fortunately, the parts were rubbed but not damaged. Things went well until I counted out the pieces and found myself short 6*35 bolts, washers, and lock nuts. Another issue was the fit of the adapter for 2" receiver. I attempted to fit it to a new hitch 2". It was a no-go without the application of a dead blow hammer. These items are not the end of the world by any means but they kind of reduce the good feeling you get with new equipment. 3.5 stars at the most. 473178

I wanted a small trailer for my 1 1/4" hitch on my Prius V to fit two Rubbermaid Roughneck Trash Barrels for trips to the town Transfer Station. The 17.5" aprox depth of the basket of this trailer fits the bottom of the barrels just right. I judged that a 60" wide would not fit three barrels anyway and that might be too heavy a load, so the 47" x 17.5" inside dimension of this was best. The attached photos show two barrels in the trailer. Some have complained that the assembly instructions are lacking. Here are some tips: The bottom platform pieces should be placed so that the tubing is flush at the central rails, the flat rails with 4 holes that bolt to the center 1 1/4" square tube are a bit wider than the square tubing that make up the bottom platform and the extra lip should point down so you have a nice flush platform in the bottom of the tray where you will be putting stuff. If you have those pieces upside down, you would have a little ridge sticking up on each side of the central square tube and that would not work well as well as the bottom of the tray, and the "T" connectors would not fit correctly. Group the fasteners and you will have three bunches (manufacturer had the nut/bolt/washers assembled together in my shipment) A) 18 small diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the flat A shaped braces which hold the bottom platform halves to the top railing halves. B) 8 medium diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the fore and aft "T" connectors C) 4 large diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those hold the left half and right half of the platform together. Using the smallest bolts, fasten the "A" braces to the bottom platform halves, then bolt to the top platform halves, leave them loose with about 1/8" of play. Now you have two half assemblies of the bottom tray. Place the middle 1 1/4" square "hitch" piece between the two half assemblies and line them up but do not put the 4 big bolts in yet. Put the two "T" connectors at the back and hitch side. The "T" connector with the reflector goes at the back, and the reflector points toward traffic. The other one goes on the hitch side. Loosely bolt the "T" connectors using the 8 medium bolts and then fasten the two sides together snugly with the 4 big bolts. Then tighten all other fasteners. A ratchet and metric sockets and an adjustable wrench to hold the nut while tightening the bolt head is much handier than two wrenches. 429557

Bought to use on a 2016 Subaru Forester. I like the overall size. It's not as wide or wider than the Forester and I can still easily access the rear hatch. With the anti-rattle bolt, it is really stable. Now the reason for the 4 stars and not 5. I added some additional reflective tape on the side corners because at night, in a dark parking lot, it is not easy to see. But what is really annoying is the carrier is at the same height as the exhaust tip. I thought that if there was an issue with this there would be something in the reviews (which there was no mention of this being a possible issue). On a trip from southwest Ohio to Minneapolis I learned the hard way that this is a serious issue. The exhaust gasses melted a hole in the cargo bag I was using to protect gifts from the elements. Thankfully the condensation that built up in the bag kept the cardboard box the bag melted to from possibly igniting. Things were damp, but not ruined. For many vehicles, you will need an adapter to raise the carrier up and away from the exhaust. You could use a turn-down exhaust tip, but this may just make the hot gasses hit your cargo from a different angle. The second time I used with a Curt adapter with rubbermaid tubs and had no issues. 464179

I thought that after inputting type of car that items ordered from you we're matched to fit my car. You should make it clear. Now I'll try to get my $20 rebate. Wish me luck !! 538910

The # C18145 isnt a vehicle specific item. This particular cargo carrier has a fairly short shank, there needs to be at least 7-1/4 inches of space between the hitch pin hole in the receiver tube and the furthest rearward point of the back bumper in order for the carrier to be compatible. If that distance is greater than 7-1/4 inches, the carrier wont fit. Ill link to a help article that explains how to take that measurement.

I purchased this cargo carrier to go behind my Volkswagen beetle. I have a small motorcycle trailer that I pull behind my car, but it doesn't fit into a single parking space and it's hard to back it up because the tongue is so short. i I wanted something that would allow me to transport my products to the weekly farmers market without pulling the trailer. The carrier did what I needed it to do and I am happy with my purchase. It's one of the smaller sized carriers, which works well behind my smaller car. The carrier was easy to assemble and the instructions were clear, but the diagram was very small. It's fairly lightweight, so it wasn't difficult for me to put on and take off by myself. I 390831

I lost it in the Sonoma Valley fire in October, along with absolutely everything else I owned, except my car and hitch. I’ve been missing the carrier, especially now that camping season is here. I will say that it rode too low behind my VW bug and scraped bottom at times. I would need a riser for my hitch if I were to buy another carrier. Also, my load sat right at the exhaust pipe, so my plastic cargo box and camping tent melted from the heat. I think raising the carrier would prevent that.

I am very sorry to hear about the fire and I am glad you are okay. If you need a new carrier that has more ground clearance for your class one 1 1/4" hitch on your VW bug I recommend part # C18110. This Curt cargo carrier has an angled shank to elevate the platform a bit for ground clearance and easier loading. This carrier allows for up to 300 lbs of cargo which is a 200 lbs less than the cargo carrier you had part # C18145. We currently do not have an adapter that will elevate the cargo carrier for a class 1 hitch. If you need a new cargo bag I recommend part # 59102. Since the load does sit so close to the exhaust pipe I would recommend using an exhaust pipe tip that turns down such as part # MF35179. To choose the correct tip, you'll need to measure the outside diameter of your exhaust pipe. Most of the tips are weld-on applications, so you'd need to have a professional welder install the tip for you.

The 20X48 Curt cargo carrier is very well made. I bought it because the etrailer.com video convinced me that with the use of the locking pin, loaded on my 1-1/4" hitch, the carrier would not do a lot of moving and shaking when traveling. The cargo carrier lives up to this claim however I do have one gripe: This carrier is not actually 20X48"; the interior dimension is really 17-1/2X46". I had previously bought an aluminum 20X60" carrier from my local Northern Tool but I returned it because I had to use a 2" hitch adapter and it made the cargo carrrier very unstable, however, the actual inside dimensions where as advertised: 20X60! 22876

Comments
Thanks for the post - I also just assembled the aluminum 20X60 carrier from Northern Tool and found it very unstable with the 2-1.25 adapter. It also put it more than 12 from the bumper. Will be returning the carrier from Northern Tool and ordering this one.

Good Product; I intend to use it to carry an electric generator for my Ford van that I had converted into a very small RV. As a word of caution for the next buyers and suggestions for the manufacturer, the assembly instructions leave a lot to be desired. You better have 13, 14, &17 mm wrenches and also sockets (to speed things up). All the nuts and bolts except for the hitch pin are metric. The hitch pin is English. I don't assemble assemblies everyday so it took a little fumbling before I figured out the nuts and bolts were metric. How much ink would it take to tell me the assembly tools required? Also, identifying bolts with numbers such as "M10*60(10) hexagonal bolt" and "M10" locking nut doesn't help. But my biggest complaint is that there is a top and bottom to the lower two frames that is not at all obvious. The only instruction that attempts to tell you this is a picture and note in the upper right corner of the instructions that says "Tube must be flush with top of plate for correct assembly." When I was done I intended to have the "tube flush with the top plate". But that isn't what is really required. The "lip" MUST be down the "Connection profiles" to fit. What a crazy name for what I would have called a "Connection Tee". What is should say is that the lower two frames must have the lip on the bar that bolts to the Receiver Bar pointed down. Or better yet, how about a little $.05 sticker that says "UP" stuck on the up side of each of the two lower frames. 85638

This was the model that was recommended for my 2002 Jeep Wrangler and I cannot be more pleased. I used it yesterday to haul bags of grass clippings/leaves (20 bags) to a dumpster - 5 bags at a time. I live near a beach and will use it to carry beach chairs, umbrella, etc. The price was great, the shipment quick, and the product was exactly as advertised. 507910

I was looking for a basket style hitch carrier that was not too big. Most carriers I saw were 60 inches long. This one is 48 inches and was just what I was looking for. I like everything about this carrier: the looks, style, size and weight. I will be using it to carry beach equipment during our summer vacations to the Outer Banks, NC. The assembly instruction page leaves alot to be desired as there is one picture trying to explain how to completely assemble the carrier. You can figure it out, but will take some time and multiple looks at the one diagram. It took me about 1.5 hours to assemble. Some other facts for those of you looking for a hitch carrier to use on a Jeep Wrangler. I have a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited with the factory installed trailer towing package & 2 inch receiver. You have to use a hitch extender with this particular carrier in order to clear the rear mounted spare tire. The JK Wranglers need approx. 12 inches out from the center of the hitch pin hole. Also, you will not be able to fully open the tailgate as the tire will hit the carrier. If you went with a flat carrier (not the basket style of this Curt one), you most likely would be able to open the tailgate and clear a flat carrier. Troop, the customer service rep who assisted me with my order was fantastic. 85560

You can check out truck bed tool box manufacturers. There are some cargo carriers out there that have matching boxes, but this is not one of them. However, with the inside dimensions on the carrier, it can be pretty easy to find an aluminum or molded ABS plastic box that will fit. Part DZ6535P from DeeZee would fint inside this Curt carrier.

I was so disappointed with the cargo carrier that I didn't both writing an initial review. Installation instructions are poor, but what makes things particularly bad is that there aren't nearly enough washers provided. This means that when you go to tighten everything down, the metal dimples inward wherever there isn't a washer. Who manufacturers a product which only provides half the amount of washers that are needed. Also, the method in which this fits 2 different hitch sizes is pretty poor. Had I known that this is how the product would work, I would have ordered two different cargo carriers. 728866

  • How to Reduce Wobble when Using Curt Cargo Carrier C18145 in a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
Hitch accessories tend to wobble, especially those that use a 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch adapter. The threaded hitch pin can only do so much to combat the movement. The issue is that the shank of the accessory has to be slightly smaller than the opening otherwise it would be difficult to insert and remove the accessory. That combined with the single attachment point and width of a cargo carrier means that even the smallest gap between shank and receiver seems huge at either end of the carrier. What...

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2013 Suzuki SX4
For your 2013 Suzuki SX4 we have the Curt hitch part # C11446 which is a fit for the sedan models and the part # C11443 which is a fit for the hatchback models. Then for a cargo carrier to fit either hitch we have the Rola part # 59507 which is Class II hitch compatible. This has a 300 lb capacity which should be enough for your moped but you would need to verify this. Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch to carry a non-supported load...

  • Compatibility of Hitch # 24913 and Cargo Carrier on 2015 Toyota Corolla
On your 2015 Toyota Corolla, the Draw-Tite # 24913 hitch receiver hitch pin hole will be 2 inches recessed from the outermost part of the bumper. The 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18145 is 7-1/4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier, so it will fit and give you 5-1/4 inches clearance. The carrier weighs 29 lbs, so you will still have a carrying capacity of 171 lbs maximum with this combination. I've linked a page for tie-down straps to assist...

  • Recommended Bike Rack and Cargo Carrier Combination for 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
I have a solution for you but the Curt # C18145 is not designed for this type of bike rack addition. For a bike rack and cargo carrier combination, I recommend the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 # HR1450Z-85. This combination will work in a 2 inch trailer hitch that is properly rated for it's tongue weight. The Sport Rider 2 bike rack and cargo carrier combo lets you carry 2 bikes and your gear. The Platform-style 2-bike rack with 55x15-1/2 cargo basket has a folding and tilting design...

  • Will Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier # C18145 Fit a Draw-Tite Hitch
Since I do not know what vehicle you have I do not know what size or sizes of hitch are offered for it; some vehicles can be fitted with more than one size hitch. The Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier # C18145 that you referenced is designed to fit both 1-1/4-inch (Class I and Class II) and 2-inch (Class III) trailer hitch receivers. The carrier itself has a maximum cargo weight capacity of 500-lbs but it is possible your hitch and vehicle are not rated the same. When different components have...

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier for 2014 Subaru Forester with a 2 inch Hitch Receiver
The Curt Cargo Carrier # 18145 that you referenced is a great carrier and will work with your 2 inch Curt hitch on your 2014 Subaru Forester. My recommendation would be to use the Pro-Series 20 by 60 cargo carrier # 63153 on your Forester. This carrier is compatible with 2 inch hitches and has a rise in the shank that provides additional 2-1/2 inches of ground clearance, and shifts the carrier and cargo a little further away from the exhaust on your vehicle, when compared to the Curt...

  • Recommended Hitch Cargo Carrier for 2015 Ford Mustang
If you do not already have a trailer hitch on your 2015 Ford Mustang, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class I Sport Frame Receiver Hitch # 24928. This is a Class I hitch with a 200 pound tongue weight capacity and 2,000 pound towing weight limit. This is custom fit for your vehicle which means no drilling will be required during installation. I have attached an installation video on your vehicle for you to review. There are a few options available for hitch cargo carriers that are compatible...

  • Curt Cargo Carrier # C18145 Recommendation for a 2007 Ford Focus with a Curt Hitch # 11294
The Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier # C18145 that you referenced would be the lightest weight cargo carrier available for the Curt Hitch # 11294 that you referenced and would allow you to dedicate the most of your tongue weight to actual cargo capacity. I attached installation instructions for you to check out also.

  • Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier for 2012 Subaru Impreza Hatchback
The 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs # C18145 is able to suppor the weight of your propane tank. The bigger issue is the hitch on your 2012 Subaru Impreza Hatchback. We only have one hitch that is capable of that weight in addition to the cargo carrier weight and that is the EcoHitch # 306-X7211. No other hitch will be compatible of carrying that weight as they are all rated for a maximum tongue weight of 200 lbs and the 29 lbs of the cargo carrier...

  • Weight Capacity of Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier # C-18145 When Used with Class I Receiver
The Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C-18145 has an overall capacity of 500 lb,s but this capacity will be limited by the tongue weight capacity of your Class I hitch. A class I hitch typically has a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs, which means that the carrier itself and whatever is placed on it cannot weigh more than 200 lbs. Your hitch should have a sticker on it that will list its tongue weight capacity. Please note that exceeding the tongue weight capacity of the hitch can result in...

  • Will the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18145 Work on a 2012 Honda Pilot
As long as you have a hitch on your 2012 Honda Pilot the Curt Cargo Carrier # C18145 would work well for you. However, you will want to measure the distance from the center of the hitch pin out to the furthest edge of your rear bumper. The # C18145 that you referenced has a distance of 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin out to the nearest rail of the carrier. If the distance you measured is less than that this carrier would have enough clearance for you. I attached a review video...

  • Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier Recommendation for a 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon
The Curt Cargo Carrier, # C18145, has a straight shank so the bottom most part of the rack will be the same distance from the ground as the bottom of the receiver opening in your hitch. Your Outback has a fair amount of clearance but there is always a possibility of the carrier making contact with the ground on steep inclines like when pulling in and out of driveways. For a little added clearance, go with a carrier that has a rise in the shank like # 63155. This carrier is the same size...

  • Cargo Carrier, Hitch and Net Recommendation for a 2012 Fiat 500 Pop
For a trailer hitch to use a cargo carrier with your 2012 Fiat 500 Pop you would want the Draw Tite part # 24873. Then for a hitch cargo carrier the lightest weight option is the Curt part # C18145 which you referenced that weighs 29 lbs. For a net the part # C18200 is the best fitting one that would work well. Check out the review video I attached as well.

  • Clearance Distance From Bumper Of 2006 Chevrolet Impala For Cargo Carrier
I did some research on your 2006 Chevrolet impala and found that the maximum towing capacity is 1000 lbs. This would mean that any cargo carrier and cargo attached to the hitch you have installed should not exceed 10 percent or 100 lbs. The Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18145 you referenced weighs 29 lbs so that would limit any cargo you plan on carrying to about 70 lbs. The carrier measures 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier. You will...

  • Recommended Wheelchair Carrier for Class I Hitch on 2003 Honda Civic
I do have some possible solutions for you, however we do not currently offer any carriers that can work with a heavy wheelchair on a Class I hitch like the one you have on your 2003 Honda Civic. Class I hitches are not rated to handle the weight of a heavier wheelchair and wheelchair carrier behind the vehicle. If the wheelchair you plan on carrying is a standard lightweight folding wheelchair, you can use a cargo carrier with your trailer hitch. The lightest carrier that is compatible...

  • Towing Capacity of 2014 Toyota Camry
According to my online research your 2014 Toyota Camry L-Series 4-Cylinder is not recommended by Toyota to tow any trailer of any weight. It is possible that certain versions of the vehicle could be properly equipped so as to have an approved towing capacity, but I suggest you refer to your specific vehicle's owner's manual, or provide your local dealership with your car's VIN, to verify if it has a tow rating. I was not able to find a purchase history using your email address so I am...

  • Hitch-Mounted Cargo Carrier For 2014 Polaris 550 Sportsman ATV
We do have cargo carriers that will fit 1-1/4 inch receiver openings. From my research I found some hitches and the receiver looks similar in design to the hitches we offer for vehicles. When any of our carriers are installed in a hitch the pin is inserted through the side and not from the top as you mentioned. If you have a standard 1-1/4 inch receiver opening then I recommend a cargo carrier like part # C18145. This carrier measures 17 x 46 inches, and weighs about 29 lbs. If you...

  • Cargo Carrier that Can be Used in a Class I Receiver
The design of the shank on many accessories prohibits installation in Class I trailer hitches that have a tab in them. Class I hitches are designed with a tab, see accompanying photo, that keeps Class II accessories from being installed to avoid potential overloading of the trailer hitch and damage to the cargo carrier, contents, hitch or vehicle frame. We do have some cargo carriers that will work in Class I hitches. The most economical choice is the Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier, item...
