All in all a good cargo carrier. I'm happy that every single fastener used a nylon lock nut. I'm using the 1 1/4" hitch. The one thing If I was using a 2", I'd be disappointed by the plastic receiver adapter. Maybe it works fine, but I'd have my doubts. The car is a Chevy Bolt EV, using the beefy and highly recommended Draw-Tite hitch. Don't bother with any other hitch, they bend or are insane to install. My only issue is that, unsurprisingly, it rides low, and scrapes when I leave my driveway, and it's not even that bad a driveway. One nice thing with the electric is that there's no hot exhaust to melt your cargo! The range / fuel economy hit is almost certainly better than a roof box, and it's way more accessible.

Comments
A year out - It went on a 2000 mile road trip and worked mostly fine. But when we came home I couldnt take the scraping, so I welded up a new center member and raised it up by about 5 inches. Made all the difference. It never scrapes and I did quite a bit of challenging dirt road without incident. I also noticed that by raising the rack up,my economy increased significantly. I would recommend this rack still, but it could use some redesign for lower vehicles.

I have received my cargo rack and have it assembled and have it installed in the trailer receiver. As it had no assembly instructions with the package, I was grateful for the detailed photo on the outside of the box.. Perhaps instructions might be in order for more complicated items, but I'm sure the guys in shipping are psychic and know when it would be a waist of time to include something that would never be followed in the first place' After assembly and installation I was pleased with how strong and solid it was. Good work on your part

Comments
Before assembly check all the bolts , washers and nuts with a magnet. Replace any with SS if they are magnetic as they will rust otherwise. The powder coat should be repainted also. The size of the basket is great and will serve you in keeping your car clean.

Purchased this rack for extra storage on our family's annual trip to the Outer Banks, NC. About a 600 mile trip, one way. Assembly was straightforward and went fairly smoothly. First time doing anything like this, so I took my time and spent about an hour (maybe a little more) working on it. Included instructions were clear and easy to follow. Assembled rack was really sturdy and seemed quite strong. Our Honda CR-V has a 1.25" hitch, so I did not need the included adapter. At each overnight stop I double-checked all nuts and bolts for tightness. A couple needed tweaking, but nothing major. So we loaded the cargo carrier with two large Rubbermaid bins (side by side) and three folding sand chairs on top, two folding camp chairs along the front and a kite tote bag. (Included photo shows a test fit, not actual trip packing) I used two ratchet straps and a couple of bungee cords to secure everything down. This really freed up storage inside the two cars we take on the trip. Honestly noticed no difference in the handling of the car or gas mileage. I did add some additional auto reflective tape on the front and side "railings" of the carrier. I felt these made the rack a bit more visible on the interstate. No items on the carrier shifted at any point of our trip. Overall, I am pleased with this carrier. Very positive experience with it from start to finish. I would definitely buy it again and would look at other Curt products in the future. Great product at a good price.

When I got home I was grateful that the carrier was delivered. I began to open the box and put the unit together (great instructions) I then put the carrier on the bach of my 5th wheel RV and now my generator has a place to ride outside so we will not have to smell gasoline anymore. I would recommend this unit for another reason that being it does not cover tail light etc. It is shorter than a lot of units that I have seen . Thanks also to the services of the company etrailer as they made me feel as if I were their only customer.

I was looking for a basket style hitch carrier that was not too big. Most carriers I saw were 60 inches long. This one is 48 inches and was just what I was looking for. I like everything about this carrier: the looks, style, size and weight. I will be using it to carry beach equipment during our summer vacations to the Outer Banks, NC. The assembly instruction page leaves alot to be desired as there is one picture trying to explain how to completely assemble the carrier. You can figure it out, but will take some time and multiple looks at the one diagram. It took me about 1.5 hours to assemble. Some other facts for those of you looking for a hitch carrier to use on a Jeep Wrangler. I have a 2013 Wrangler Unlimited with the factory installed trailer towing package & 2 inch receiver. You have to use a hitch extender with this particular carrier in order to clear the rear mounted spare tire. The JK Wranglers need approx. 12 inches out from the center of the hitch pin hole. Also, you will not be able to fully open the tailgate as the tire will hit the carrier. If you went with a flat carrier (not the basket style of this Curt one), you most likely would be able to open the tailgate and clear a flat carrier. Troop, the customer service rep who assisted me with my order was fantastic.

I have a carrier similar to this one.. What I want to know is if anyone knows where I can get a hard sided container to fit in the carrier that can be locked to the carrier??
-- comment by: sassy - 11/30/2013

You can check out truck bed tool box manufacturers. There are some cargo carriers out there that have matching boxes, but this is not one of them. However, with the inside dimensions on the carrier, it can be pretty easy to find an aluminum or molded ABS plastic box that will fit. Part DZ6535P from DeeZee would fint inside this Curt carrier.

This basket is TOUGH! It holds a huge 6p tent, a 2p tent, a 60 pound deep cycle battery, a bag of tools, and an air mattress when we tent camp around the country. This basket has seen about 8,000 miles across 24 states. It's scraped the ground over 100 times and the bolts got tweaked. I sawed them off and replaced them with round headed bolts upside down so it will skid on the round head instead of the ground catching the threads and bending the bolts. I seriously cannot believe this basket is still intact! It's been through absolute hell and it's held up. It's due for a painting and she'll be like new. On my 2011 Yaris, it blocks the license plate so I could potentially be giving a bored cop a reason to pull me over. Sometimes I zip tie my license plate to the basket when I'm in a bigger city. At night, I use one of those 12 volt license plate lights and connect that to my battery in the basket. This was a great investment and I'm damn glad to have it.

The basket took a BEATING and it took it like a champ. I ended up selling it on [used item site] when I upgraded vehicles to a very happy customer.

This is a great product not to big and not to small. Seem to be very sturdy and strong, and it was very easy to put together. It doesn't stick out to far from the car either which is what I was hoping for. I also bought the same brand hitch to attach this to our 2015 highlander.

I wanted a small trailer for my 1 1/4" hitch on my Prius V to fit two Rubbermaid Roughneck Trash Barrels for trips to the town Transfer Station. The 17.5" aprox depth of the basket of this trailer fits the bottom of the barrels just right. I judged that a 60" wide would not fit three barrels anyway and that might be too heavy a load, so the 47" x 17.5" inside dimension of this was best. The attached photos show two barrels in the trailer. Some have complained that the assembly instructions are lacking. Here are some tips: The bottom platform pieces should be placed so that the tubing is flush at the central rails, the flat rails with 4 holes that bolt to the center 1 1/4" square tube are a bit wider than the square tubing that make up the bottom platform and the extra lip should point down so you have a nice flush platform in the bottom of the tray where you will be putting stuff. If you have those pieces upside down, you would have a little ridge sticking up on each side of the central square tube and that would not work well as well as the bottom of the tray, and the "T" connectors would not fit correctly. Group the fasteners and you will have three bunches (manufacturer had the nut/bolt/washers assembled together in my shipment) A) 18 small diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the flat A shaped braces which hold the bottom platform halves to the top railing halves. B) 8 medium diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those are for the fore and aft "T" connectors C) 4 large diameter bolts/nuts/washers - those hold the left half and right half of the platform together. Using the smallest bolts, fasten the "A" braces to the bottom platform halves, then bolt to the top platform halves, leave them loose with about 1/8" of play. Now you have two half assemblies of the bottom tray. Place the middle 1 1/4" square "hitch" piece between the two half assemblies and line them up but do not put the 4 big bolts in yet. Put the two "T" connectors at the back and hitch side. The "T" connector with the reflector goes at the back, and the reflector points toward traffic. The other one goes on the hitch side. Loosely bolt the "T" connectors using the 8 medium bolts and then fasten the two sides together snugly with the 4 big bolts. Then tighten all other fasteners. A ratchet and metric sockets and an adjustable wrench to hold the nut while tightening the bolt head is much handier than two wrenches.

I am extremely happy with my purchase. I bought this for a cross-country family move. At such a reasonable price, I was surprised at how heavy and sturdy this carrier was. Assembly was quite easy, with directions I could understand. Now that I've moved, I'm looking forward to future uses on fishing trips and tailgating at college football games!!

This is a great quality carrier. Had one of the flat mesh bottom ones with little sides and found it limited. Needed something that I could use on my car or my truck and the adapter makes this happen. The instructions are a bit vague but it really takes no skill to assemble. All the holes lined up perfect with a little wiggle but it is important to put ALL the bolts in loose first THEN tighten it down. The only thing I would prefer changed would be the length of the bolts. They easily could be a half inch shorter. But that is purely a cosmetic thing. I also recommend the hitch riser if you have a car. You’ll never clear a steep driveway without it.

Attached this thing to the 1-1/4 Inch hitch on a Mazda 5. Fit perfectly and was easier than I thought to put on and remove. Solidly built. Had a cargo bag stuffed with about 6 duffle bags strapped to this carrier, about 100lbs. Drove 9 hrs each way, no issues at all. No whistling, and didn't seem to affect the gas mileage either. I recommend this for anyone needing a little more space in their car.

The 20X48 Curt cargo carrier is very well made. I bought it because the etrailer.com video convinced me that with the use of the locking pin, loaded on my 1-1/4" hitch, the carrier would not do a lot of moving and shaking when traveling. The cargo carrier lives up to this claim however I do have one gripe: This carrier is not actually 20X48"; the interior dimension is really 17-1/2X46". I had previously bought an aluminum 20X60" carrier from my local Northern Tool but I returned it because I had to use a 2" hitch adapter and it made the cargo carrrier very unstable, however, the actual inside dimensions where as advertised: 20X60!

Comments
Thanks for the post - I also just assembled the aluminum 20X60 carrier from Northern Tool and found it very unstable with the 2-1.25 adapter. It also put it more than 12 from the bumper. Will be returning the carrier from Northern Tool and ordering this one.

Good price. Straightforward to assemble. Just look at the picture (carefully, since it's rather small) and throw the instructions away. One functional shortcoming: the Anti-rattle hitch bolt (that is supposed to prevent movement of carrier in hitch receiver) does not line up properly with the the hole in my receiver.

I purchased this cargo carrier to go behind my Volkswagen beetle. I have a small motorcycle trailer that I pull behind my car, but it doesn't fit into a single parking space and it's hard to back it up because the tongue is so short. i I wanted something that would allow me to transport my products to the weekly farmers market without pulling the trailer. The carrier did what I needed it to do and I am happy with my purchase. It's one of the smaller sized carriers, which works well behind my smaller car. The carrier was easy to assemble and the instructions were clear, but the diagram was very small. It's fairly lightweight, so it wasn't difficult for me to put on and take off by myself. I

I lost it in the Sonoma Valley fire in October, along with absolutely everything else I owned, except my car and hitch. I’ve been missing the carrier, especially now that camping season is here. I will say that it rode too low behind my VW bug and scraped bottom at times. I would need a riser for my hitch if I were to buy another carrier. Also, my load sat right at the exhaust pipe, so my plastic cargo box and camping tent melted from the heat. I think raising the carrier would prevent that.
Karen C - 06/09/2018

I am very sorry to hear about the fire and I am glad you are okay. If you need a new carrier that has more ground clearance for your class one 1 1/4" hitch on your VW bug I recommend part # C18110. This Curt cargo carrier has an angled shank to elevate the platform a bit for ground clearance and easier loading. This carrier allows for up to 300 lbs of cargo which is a 200 lbs less than the cargo carrier you had part # C18145. We currently do not have an adapter that will elevate the cargo carrier for a class 1 hitch. If you need a new cargo bag I recommend part # 59102. Since the load does sit so close to the exhaust pipe I would recommend using an exhaust pipe tip that turns down such as part # MF35179. To choose the correct tip, you'll need to measure the outside diameter of your exhaust pipe. Most of the tips are weld-on applications, so you'd need to have a professional welder install the tip for you.

For the price excellent. Note that the rating does change to 300 lbs. if you use with the 1 -1/4 hitch. Not a big deal. I think 300 lbs. is really all you would want to support with this anyways. Decent hardware come with it (metric) and good hole alignment. Easy assembly, but it takes 20 mins or so. Note in my picture. I added some roll bar padding to prevent abrasions to items being carried.

This carrier was perfect for our 05 Equinox. We had tried a different carrier that fits a 2" hitch and had to buy the adapter to fit our 1.25" hitch. This caused the carrier to come out way too far from the back of the vehicle and did not look safe. I found this one online and had it shipped to us within a couple of days. We just used it on our vacation and it worked perfectly. It also ended up being cheaper than the one we had bought before, not including the adapter. Saved us at least $60.00 even after paying the expedited shipping. Great product, and great communication from the seller in regards to shipping the item.

Carrier still works great. Just used it last week on our vacation and works perfectly. I drove a second car behind my husband on this trip and was able to keep an eye on it this time. The items in the carrier did not bounce or shift at all.

I bought this last year for a 2,000 mile road trip and have used it a few times since. It was very easy to put together and slipped right into the receiver hitch with no problem. After the trip I am very impressed especially at this price point. It showed no signs of use such as dents, bends or chipped finish. It held up quite well to the weather and 150lbs or so we had on it and it continues to look almost new. I expect several years of use from this product and highly recommend it. One word of caution: the exhaust on the CRV blows directly onto the right corner and is hot enough to melt a cooler as we found out. I took some hardware cloth and sandwiched several folds of aluminum foil between 2 pieces and cut to fit the back, around the corner and up the side approximately 1ft. No further problems.

Comments
If the carrier or objects carried on it will be within 12-18 inches of the exhaust pipe, theres a danger that objects on the carrier can be damaged from the heat of the exhaust. In order to determine if a given carrier will be far enough from the exhaust, youd need to take some measurements. Measure half the width of the carrier 24 inches in this case to the right of the center of the hitch. Add the appropriate inches of height if the carrier has an angled shank that raised it by a few inches. Then take the clearance measurement listed in the product description. This will give you a good idea of where the carrier will sit in regards to the exhaust. In many cases, an exhaust shop can install a downturned tip that will direct the heat downward.

  • Will Adding a Trailer Hitch to a Honda Fit Void the Warranty
Consumers of aftermarket products are protected by the Federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. The Act states that if something breaks on your vehicle and you take it in for warranty repair, the dealer must honor your warranty unless whatever modifications you have added to your vehicle actually caused the problem in question. With a hitch on a Honda Fit you would not be able to carry 300 to 400 pounds. The hitches for the Fit are Class I hitches rated for a maximum of 200 pounds tongue...

  • How to Reduce Wobble when Using Curt Cargo Carrier C18145 in a 2 Inch Trailer Hitch
Hitch accessories tend to wobble, especially those that use a 1-1/4 inch to 2 inch adapter. The threaded hitch pin can only do so much to combat the movement. The issue is that the shank of the accessory has to be slightly smaller than the opening otherwise it would be difficult to insert and remove the accessory. That combined with the single attachment point and width of a cargo carrier means that even the smallest gap between shank and receiver seems huge at either end of the carrier. What...

  • Weight Rating Limits Regarding Cargo Carriers
When using a cargo carrier like # C18145, you want to consider the trailer hitch tongue weight capacity as well as if the vehicle manufacturer gives a tongue weight capacity. If the manufacturer specifies a tongue weight rating capacity you will find it in your owners manual under the trailer towing section. If they do not specify a rating, then you will compare the cargo carrier and the trailer hitch receiver ratings and go with the lesser of the two as you max capacity.

  • 2007 Suzuki SX4 Crossover Hitch Cargo Carrier Recommendation with Draw Tite Hitch
For a Class I hitch like the part # 24817 which is what you'd have installed on your 2007 Suzuki SX4 you are putting quite a bit of leverage on it with a hitch adapter/riser. You most likely are straining the hitch beyond what it can safely handle too which is asking for trouble. The sag you mentioned is a good indicator of that. Your best option is a cargo carrier that fits the hitch without the use of an adapter like the # C18145.

  • Cargo Carrier with Angled Shank to Clear Exhaust Outlet for 2011 Dodge Durango
The Surco Folding Cargo Carrier, part # 52018F will raise the platform of the carrier 4-1/2 inches above the top of the 2 inch receiver. The distance from the hitch pin hole in your receiver to the furthest rearward point of your rear bumper will need to be less than 5 inches in order for the carrier to fold. In addition to using a carrier with a raised shank, you can use an exhaust tip that directs the exhaust to the side or actually have a muffler shop bend the tail pipe so that it...

  • Can Ratchet Straps be Used to Carry Bikes on a Curt Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier
Yes, you could just use ratchet straps to hold bikes down on the Curt cargo carrier # C18145. I recommend retractable ratchet strap set # EM34420.

  • Towing Capacity of 2014 Toyota Camry
According to my online research your 2014 Toyota Camry L-Series 4-Cylinder is not recommended by Toyota to tow any trailer of any weight. It is possible that certain versions of the vehicle could be properly equipped so as to have an approved towing capacity, but I suggest you refer to your specific vehicle's owner's manual, or provide your local dealership with your car's VIN, to verify if it has a tow rating. I was not able to find a purchase history using your email address so I am...

  • Cargo Carrier Recommendations for a Class C Itasca Navion 25k Motorhome
I would recommend you get either a 20x60 Railed Cargo Carrier, part # C18150, or for a little more money you could get the very lightweight Curt 20x60 Folding, Aluminum Cargo Carrier, part # C18100. The Curt 20x48 Cargo Carrier, part # C18145, you referenced is not designed to handle the harsher ride at the rear of motorhomes and I would not recommend you purchase it. You may also be interested in a Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock, part # e98880, as a theft deterrent. I attached a review...

  • Trailer Hitch and Cargo Carrier Recommendation for 2013 Suzuki SX4
For your 2013 Suzuki SX4 we have the Curt hitch part # C11446 which is a fit for the sedan models and the part # C11443 which is a fit for the hatchback models. Then for a cargo carrier to fit either hitch we have the Rola part # 59507 which is Class II hitch compatible. This has a 300 lb capacity which should be enough for your moped but you would need to verify this. Curt requires the use of their stabilizer strap part # 18050 when using their hitch to carry a non-supported load...

  • Recommended Wheelchair Carrier for Class I Hitch on 2003 Honda Civic
I do have some possible solutions for you, however we do not currently offer any carriers that can work with a heavy wheelchair on a Class I hitch like the one you have on your 2003 Honda Civic. Class I hitches are not rated to handle the weight of a heavier wheelchair and wheelchair carrier behind the vehicle. If the wheelchair you plan on carrying is a standard lightweight folding wheelchair, you can use a cargo carrier with your trailer hitch. The lightest carrier that is compatible...

The Light Kit for Draw-Tite, Tow Ready, and Rola Railed Cargo Carriers # 20174 is a great option to add to a cargo carrier. • How To Carry Two Bikes And A Generator While Towing A Fifth Wheel Trailer
I have another option, but unfortunately none of the cargo carrier bike rack combos are rated for use on a 5th wheel trailer like your 2021 Grand Design Reflection. Instead I recommend using a front mount trailer hitch receiver on your truck with the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches # C18145 to carry your 100lb generator. This cargo carrier weighs in at 28lbs, and has a 500lb weight capacity making it plenty strong to carry your generator. You will want to make sure...

  • How to Carry Cargo on 2016 Buick Encore
I reviewed an online edition of the owner's manual for your 2016 Buick Encore and on page 186 GM indicates this car is not intended to tow any trailer. I do not recommend going against this advice. The hitch I do recommend, which would allow use of a cargo carrier like # C18145, is the Draw-Tite Clas I hitch # 36554. This hitch has a 300-lb tongue weight rating so after you deduct the carrier's 29-lb weight you would still be able to load up to 271-lbs of cargo.

  • Carrying Cargo on a Hitch Mount Carrier and Roof Carrier on a 2014 Honda CR-V
Technically, the sky's the limit when putting things on a trailer hitch mounted cargo carrier as long as you are within the capacity of the carrier and vehicle. But realistically I do not recommend stacking cargo so high that it blocks your view through the rear window on your 2015 Honda CR-V. Also you would need to stay within the capacity of the hitch and vehicle. Check the owners manual for your CR-V because I am fairly certain that the tongue weight capacity is only 150 pounds despite...

We do have some cargo carriers that will work in Class I hitches. The most economical choice is the Curt Hitch Cargo Carrier, item...

  • Trailer Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Recommendation for Volkswagen New Beetle
First, check your vehicle owners manual to determine the towing capacities of the vehicle. Once you have determined the tongue weight capacity (the amount of downward weight at the trailer hitch receiver) of the vehicle, you will have to compare that to the combined weight of the carrier and gear that you want to carry. The cargo carrier you can use depends on the trailer hitch on the vehicle. I do not know the year Beetle you have but you most likely have a Class I trailer hitch that...
