Video Transcript for Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Carpod 23 x 47 walled cargo carrier. It's been designed for use in 2 inch hitches. It's part number is M2200. This cargo carrier is designed with nice, heavy weight steel construction. It's got a black powder coat finish. This thick tall sides are going to help hold our gear in place, and with the main thick shank it's going to give us some extra strength and support.

We can tote up to 450 pounds with our carrier. As you can see we've got the nice tall walls that come up all the way around our carrier. They've got the mesh front on them. This is going to help hold all of our cargo in place as we go down the road. These are designed to fold down easily for storage. You simply go around and start pulling our pins that are located one at each of the 4 corners.

We'll fold down our side doors first. Then our front and then our rear. As you can see this is going to make it very handy for storing in the garage. This also is going to allow us access into our rear cargo area. Now a feature as soon as the door closes which I'll show you that I really like is the concern I had since this is actually my vehicle is that when we open the front door I was worried that it was going to extend too far and hit the back of the suburban, but there's actually a little tab here that as you can see prevents that from happening, so it's really a nice feature that they've got built right in. Cargo carriers like this really allow you to get any of the things inside of your car out that might be able to free up some room for some extra passengers or pets.

As you can see it's got the expanded steel floor in it. When we get our muddy, dirty items that we don't want getting all over the interior of our car, we can just place them right here, allow those to drip dry, allow the dirt and stuff to fall off of them, and all we have to do is hose it down. As you can see, nothing's really going to rest on top of this and cause excessive corrosion. The powder coat finish, of course, is really going to help with that corrosion resistance as well. As you can see, putting it back up is as easy as just unfolding in, and we just slide our 4 pins back in.

Again we got 1 of those at each corner. That really firms it up for us. Now that we've gone over some of the key features of the cargo carrier, we'll show you how to install it into your vehicle. Basically we just slide the shank of the carrier right into the receiver tube of our hitch. We need it to go in far enough to where we line up our hitch pin hole and the hole that's in the shank of the carrier. We'll then take a standard 5/8 pin and slide it through. The pin and clip are sold separately. We sell the combo on our website. The part number on it is PC3. We just slide our pin through and then we secure it here on the other side using our clip. Just like that the carrier's installed onto the vehicle. Now we're going to load it up with some gear. Let's just see how that works. Now we'll just get our gear loaded up here. See those walled sides are really nice about containment, and it's really snug and really secure. With our gear in place there we can simply pull her back up, slide our pins in. As you can see, they're also going to supply you with a strap. The strap's made to fit around the outside rails and hold your gear in place. I don't think it's quite necessary with the load that we've got today. I don't think we have to be worried about it flying out, but if you do need it, they do send you a nice strap to come along with it. Now we're going to be ready to take you out on our test course and let you see what it looks like in action. We'll start by going through the slalom, so you can see the side to side action of the rack as if you're cornering or doing evasive maneuvering. As we go around the corner into our alternating speed bumps, you'll see that torquing maybe if you're hitting a speed bump or a pot hole or a curb, something along those lines. Then we get into the solid speed bumps. You'll be able to see that up and down action like if you we're going into a parking lot or in a driveway, something along those lines. Now you'll be able to customize your Carpod however you like it. We have a lockable lid available for it. That part number is M2201. We also have a weather resistant cargo bag available that has 13-3/4 cubic foot capacity. Its part number is M2202. If you've already decided you'll be going with the lid or the bag or any combination, we do have the Carpod and lid available as part number M2200-2201. We also have the Carpod, the lid, and the bag available at a combo, part number M2200-01-02. That will complete today's look at the 23 x 47 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier designed for 2 inch hitches offering the 450 pound weight capacity, Part number M2200. .

Best cargo basket ever! The liner bag does not leak! Have used several times. It’s easy for this “older” lady to get it on and off. 726577

Works out great- easy setup and stores more than I thought it would. 548338

I really wanted to love this, but it didn't fit my car properly and it caused us a real headache on our road trip. The unit road too low to the ground and scraped the floor when we went over bumps and dips. Much worse was that, it sat right in front of the exhaust pipe, which we didn't realize until halfway through our trip, when a bottle of detergent leaked, turned corrosive from the heat, and literally melted through the bag and damaged much of the items we had in the crate. We had to throw out the bag and most of our things. I'm hoping buying an extender to lift it up higher away from the floor and exhaust will work, but I'm hesitant to spend any more money, since this was supposed to have everything it needed for my type of car. I'm also bummed that the bag was ruined, so now anything we try to store will be exposed to the elements. 529950

As with any hitch mounted accessory, youll want to make sure theres at least 12 inches between the exhaust and any hitch mounted accessory. An extender/rise adapter is a good solution, but an extender/adapter will move the load of the carrier and whats carried upon it further away from the hitch which will lower the hitch tongue weight capacity maximum amount of weight that can be safely carried on the hitch by half. Having an extra component installed between the hitch and carrier can also allow more movement of the hitch accessory.

Iam rating it as such because I have only tested it without any cargo on a 30 min drive. It was ok considering the help of the anti-rattle and anti-tilt that I also used. The real test really will be putting some cargo in it.I noticed that there was a lock nut or washer missing at the base which made one of the bolts loose;likewise there was only place to put a lock( do not know why the locks came in pairs?)Overall,I think this will work for me.As for the anti-tilt that I purchased, I noticed that the 2 bolts on the side really are only barely touching the bar,I think the holes were not properly placed ,so when you tighten them, they will only tighten the edge of the bar.The shipping was super fast! It felt like it just came a few miles from my house, however I noticed that the packaging was messed up and torn so it was just taped up;it really looked like it was an old stock from the warehouse. The customer service was awesome and will probably order from this site again. Thanks! 45614

Box to completed install: 14 minutes. We tavel a lot and the extra space will be great. Tailgate on the 2010 BMW XDrive 35D clears no problem. Hitch came from etrailer done at a previous install. 484522

Just what I need to carry those two extra suitcases and couple of bags. Easy for one person to assemble and install. I would recommend this for anyone with a ford Escape if traveling with 3 or 4 people. 160124

I called up and spoke with Nicole, she told me it was very important to get the right size of the tail gate. I called back the next day to order the cargo carrier. Nicole Suggested the package with the water-proof bag and locking top. It was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to use the cargo carrier before I wrote this review. Last week I took my family on a trip and the cargo carrier worked perfectly, it gave us all the extra room in the car we needed. I have already told someone else about etrailer and great they were. Thank you very much. Dave D. Boston, MA. 45396

We really like our hitch carrier; have not used it with the "liner" but with just the cage. Great for hauling firewood, small grill, charcoal, etc. that we wouldn't want to take in our motor-home. When parked for camping just throw a tarp over the top of it to keep things dry. Also easily lockable. 783057

- M2200-01-02

The carrier is excellent. It is somewhat more lite-weight than I anticipated, but it has not sagged or become deformed in any fashion, so it obviously does what it was designed for. Regarding the bag; I have never been able to adequately waterproof it regardless of how much Scotch Guard I apply. With that said, I would still purchase it again because it is durable and does keep dust and dirt away from the items stored. 649132

Excellent product and easy to install. Very solid and holds a ton. Also bought the locking lid and cargo bag. 637537

We love our Carpod with the waterproof bag. Worked excellent on our trip to the beach. It fit great on our Volvo XC90!!!! It held all our beach chairs, toys, and so much more. Really recommend the carpod if you need extra room like us. It holds a lot and it is easy to stick on the car. No problems here. Just add locks and your good!!! 523314

I have traveled with the product twice across the country. It worked great. 439036

- M2200-01-02

We have been very happy with this product. It carried our 20 gal propane tank, along with other camping gear, on a 6000 mile round trip to Michigan this summer in our Honda Pilot. Our favorite use is on the back of our motor home. I can put fish, bait and other stinky things outside, much to my wife's relief! The only minor problem we have had was the lid not fitting exactly. But we have been able to work that out. 287140

- M2200-01-02

Yes, I like the carrier. I would buy it again. the only little problem I had was around the corners it had some water seepage. I sprayed it good with some waterproof sealer it worked good after that. 275147

Great package, highly recommend!! 261513

- M2200-01-02

We used it on two trips since purchasing it. On both trips is worked flawlessly. This was the best investment we have made for this type item. We looked at numerous units before choosing this one, but none came close to providing what this unit does (for the price). Thanks for making our vacations less stressful. The Ragas Family 247843

  • Will Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier # M2200-01-02 Allow Rear Hatch Opening on 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan
The Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier # M2200-01-02 is 22-inches tall when assembled so it would not allow your Grand Caravan's rear hatch to open when it is in place in your hitch and in use. But since this carrier folds flat when not in use (as you can see in the linked video) in this folded state it WILL allow your rear hatch to open. But note this carrier will be very close to your rear bumper when installed in your hitch and may actually just touch it. This carrier requires use of a hitch...

  • Cargo Bag Recommendation that Can Be Locked to a Cargo Carrier
I think I have a better solution for you. For a cargo carrier with a cargo bag that can be locked to the cargo carrier I think you would be best served by checking out the 24x48-3/4 Carpod Walled Cargo Carrier w/ Lockable Lid and Cargo Bag # M2200-01-02. This comes with a cargo bag similar to the Rola Bag # 59102 that you referenced except it can very effectively be locked to a cargo carrier by the walls and lid. For padlocks you would want the Master Lock Solid Body Padlocks part # 141T. And...

  • Difference Between the Carpod part numbers M2205-01-02 and M2200-01-02
The difference between the two Carpods that you referenced is that the part # M2205-01-02 can fold up and the # M2200-01-02 does not fold. The only color that the # M2202 comes in is black. You should note that this bag is included with both carriers mentioned. The bag would take the shape of the cargo installed in it for the most part. If you filled out the bag it would not sag at all.

  • Fit of Carpod # M2205-01-02 Cargo Carrier on 2013 Ford Edge/ Lincoln MKX w/ Factory 2 inch Hitch
In order to find out if the Carpod cargo carrying basket will fit the 2013 Ford Edge/Lincoln MKX, you'll need to take a measurement to determine how far the hitch is recessed under the rear of the vehicle. Measure from the hitch pin hole rearward to the furthest rearward edge of the back bumper (I'll link you to an article that shows exactly how to do this.) If the distance you measured is LESS than 2-1/2 inches, the basket will fit just fine. If the distance is longer, the upright portion...

  • Large Capacity Cargo Bag for Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier
The bag that's meant to fit into the Carpod # M2200 cargo carrier is the # M2202. This bag has a 13-3/4 cubic foot capacity and measures 46x22x22. The etrailer extra large cargo bag, part # 988501 has a 20 cubic foot capacity and measures 59x24x24. You could say the bag would fit in the # M2200 carrier, but it wouldn't fit very well. The walls of the carrier would prevent you from using the whole 20 cubic foot capacity of the carrier. You can get the carrier and the bag together...

  • Determining Bumper Clearance on 2012 Infiniti QX56 for Carpod Cargo Carrier
Some of the Carpod cargo carriers do sit very close to the end of the hitch receiver. To be sure that the cargo carrier will clear your 2012 Infiniti QX56's bumper, you will want to take a quick measurement on your vehicle. Using a yard stick or dowel rod held at the rear-most point of the bumper, you will want to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on the trailer hitch receiver to the dowel rod. This will let you know how many inches are needed for the carrier to clear the back...
