What Cargo Carrier can I Use on My Trailer Hitch with 1 1/4" Receiver for Going to the Beach?

Updated 06/26/2025 | Published 06/22/2025

Question:

I have a 2025 GLC 300 with the factory 1.25 hitch. I know I will need an adapter, but I need a cargo carrier for the hitch tube. Can you recommend one, as well as recommending the proper adapter? I am not going to be hauling extremely heavy stuff just going to the beach.

Hello Rick,

I have some good news, an adapter will not be necessary. When using an adapter to go from a 1 1/4" to a 2" it will actually cut your tongue weight in half, and since you are looking to use a cargo carrier we need as much of that tongue weight as possible.

We have the 20x47 Reese Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" Hitches - Steel - 300 lbs # 63155, or the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs # C18145. Personally I prefer the # 63155 because it has more coverage on the bottom.

If you need some straps, the CargoBuckle Ratchet Tie-Down Straps w/ S-Hooks - 1" x 15' - 500 lbs - Qty 4 # IMF12636 will get the job done. Or we also have this nifty Curt Stretchable Cargo Net - 43" Long x 24" Wide # C18202.

If you wanted an enclosed carrier, the Thule Arcos Enclosed Cargo Carrier - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - 14 cu ft - 110 lbs # TH25YE would be a great choice.

What is your favorite beach to go to? Mine used to be Redondo (California), I grew up in LA but have called Missouri home for quite some time now.

Actually, Stone Harbor NJ. Been going there for years. Thanks for the reply. It was very helpful! Should I be concerned about exhaust heat for carriers like these?

@Rick Just looked up Stone Harbor and it looks amazing! I will make it to an East Coast beach before my days are over. The cargo carrier will still sit higher than your exhaust, it will be totally fine. I have never heard of any issues.
