How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I was extremely impressed with the recent technical and customer support from etrailer. Over the weekend, they answered my questions to select the appropriate replacement electric jack for my Airstream. Also, when there was a shipping delay (not etrailer’s fault), Rose provided prompt responses and professional support. I will continue to use etrailer for my RV needs.

by:

Definitely has the power I need however I can't open my tailgate when my camper is hooked up. 5 stars for power.

by:

Works flawlessly. Maybe the only thing I could complain about is it is slower than I think it could be. Along with the side lights could always be brighter. Works great, install kit is awesome, and it works without a stutter.

Amazing! I would have replaced mine sooner with this and I known. It’s not faster but way more confident, quiet, and has a larger extension without taking up much more space.

Great. Not as quick as I expected.

by:

Had been contemplating this purchase/install for a couple of years. Finally bit the bullet. Purchase was simple. Shipping was a day late in arriving, not a real issue, because I live in a rural area. Shipping delays are expected.
Installation was very straight forward, remove three bolts, replace three bolts. That was all there was as far as the mechanical installation. For the electrical portion I elected to splice into the battery power wire that is part of the 7-wire electric cable on the trailer, in lieu of running a dedicated #10 wire direct from the trailer battery.
The jack seems to operate just fine, as anticipated. I have run the jack a number of times over the last few days without issue.
Why not a 5 star review, just haven't owned it long enough nor operated the jack enough. Ask me in 5 years.

by:

Absolutely wonderful. I would never have another horse trailer without a Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack 5000.

I own 10 trailers for business, I have used many electric tongue jacks. This one stands up to the abuse and time in the weather. Recommend this unit to anyone wanting a reliable electric tongue jack. It is not fast, but it is strong

by:

It was easy to install and has power to spare. I installed it on a 6000 lb travel trailer that requires the truck to be lifted to easily remove the weight distribution bars. My old jack struggled with the weight. Not this one. Lots of power. It's a simple jack. No memory functions, no auto retract feature. Just two buttons. One to raise and lower the front of the trailer, and one for the lights. My issues are that the lights are essentially worthless. They don't produce much light and being on the side of the unit, they aren't aimed where you need them to be. Also, you have to buy their kit to have a place to hang the chains and the cord or, buy a cover that allows you to do the same. I recommend you buy the cover by the way. Solid buy recommendation

by:

This was a complete gamechanger for us. We formerly had a power jack rated for 2500 lbs. Every time I had to raise it, the whole trailer swayed. It also didn't have the adjustable base, so the height was restricted. Moving up to this jack means no more sway and the option for an additional 5 inches of height. Installation was super simple, as well. Thank you, etrailer, for making it so I no longer live in terror of raising my jack.

by:

Trailer jack was defective. etrailer.com passed the buck to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was not very receptive and expected me to repair the jack. I purchased a new one and shouldn't have to try to figure out why it wasn't working. I want a new one and should get it from etrailer since I purchased it from them.

by:

Works well, dependable.

We really like our electric jack. It is everything we excepted.

It is getting slower and slower to lift the trailer. Is there anything that needs lubricants?

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

11/15/2023

@Grant The only lubrication needed is the inner jack tube. Stromberg Carlson recommends fully extending the jack which fully exposes the inner tube. Thoroughly clean the tube then lubricate it with a thin coat of grease or a silicone spray lubricant. As far as the jack operating slowly, be sure the battery is fully charged and full power is reaching the jack. Also, the jack picks up its ground connection via its attachment to the trailer tongue. Make sure this connection is secure and not corroded. Hope that helps!

Getting slower in lifting the trailer

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

11/18/2023

@Grant Make sure the battery is fully charged and the jack is getting a full 12-volts. The jack gets its ground connection via its connection to the trailer tongue, so make sure the connection point between the jack and trailer tongue isn't corroded.

by:

The jack has performed great over the past year. The only minor comment would be that the integrated light hasn't been bright enough to use for other tasks other than seeing the switches. As that is as designed feature, it's only a minor inconvenience if you want more light at the trailer hitch.

by:

Easy search for the product, arrived promptly. Easy install, awesome upgrade. Good to go for years to come!!

by:

Ordering Processing, and shipping can not expect any better! Installation, operation. No glitches ! Great followup, excellent staff, product function and appearance all that is desired. Just great!

  • Stromberg Carlson Trailer Jack Will Not Move
If all of your wiring looks good and you have solid connections then the problem is most likely your ground. You will want to make sure that the ground on your Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000 has a solid, metal-to-metal, connection to your trailer frame. Any corrosion and sometimes paint can mess with the connection enough that it will make this stuff happen. If that isn't the problem let me know and I will help you troubleshoot further.

Sundowner made both bumper-pull A-frame trailers and gooseneck trailers in 1998 but it sounds like you have a bumper-pull A-frame type and need an electric tongue jack. We like to suggest using an electric tongue jack with more weight capacity than you will actually need, since this this tends to improve both reliability and the jack's working lifespan. One of the best options is the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR. Unlike most jacks, this one has stops that prevent over extending or retracting...

  • Troubleshooting Huskey Brute Electric Trailer Jack That Retracts But Doesnt Extend
I highly doubt that the jack itself is the issue. Typically when a trailer jack has trouble extending but not retracting that is due to a bad ground connection or a depleted battery, with the battery being the more common of the two. Gravity helps when lowering the jack so the battery isn't having to put out much power whereas raising the trailer tongue relies solely on power from the battery. We do not offer an adapter to allow an electric a-frame jack like the Stromberg Carlson # JET-5000 to be installed on a straight pole tongue trailer. • Options for Powering Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack
Adding a battery to power an electric jack is without a doubt the preferred method. The jack will operate more quickly, reliably and efficiently. It is possible to connect the power lead of the jack to the 7-way accessory power feed from the 7-way, but the jack will operate very slowly. If the weight capacity of the jack is exceeded, the wire feeding the 12-volt power to the 7-way could possibly overheat. The Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 draws power through it's black wire and then grounds through it's mounting hardware. Normally you run the power wire to the trailer battery and you are set since it grounds through the trailer frame. It draws 25 amps total so if the 12 volt accessory circuit of your 7-way is rated for that (most are) it could run to that circuit directly.

This jack has more than enough capacity for your 6,800 lb trailer that would have 680 lb of tongue weight roughly. Trailer jacks like this are rated by lifting capacity of the jack.
