Video Transcript for Review of Pacer Performance Vehicle Light Parts - Third Brake Light Logic Module - PP20-702

Ellen: Hey, everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a quick look at the pacer brake logic module. Now, this allows you to add in a third or center brake light on your trailer or your vehicle. So if you want to put this on an RV or really anything else, and you're adding in that third brake light, this allows you to do that. Basically what it does is it allows you to tap into your wiring from the factory or from maybe a four-pole wiring harness, and it'll filter out the turn signals so that you're not getting a flash on that center brake. You're only going to get the brake signal, so it only comes on when you hit the brakes, rather than coming on if the turn signals are activated. So it just is pretty simple to wire up.

You might want to watch out for putting too much power through this. Some customers have said that if you put through more than 1.5 amps, it won't work, so just keep that in mind. Will work out pretty well for most LED lights, though, since they have a pretty low power draw. There's just three wires to worry about. The green wire is what's going to actually go to your center brake light, and then you'd want to, of course, ground that brake light out. The other two wires, one is going to go to your right turn signal.

The other is going to go to your left turn signal. It doesn't really matter which wire you use. They're just there to get the signal and then filter it out so that brake signal can work. This little guy is just that kind of the brains of the operation, so you want to make sure that maybe you zip tie this off to some existing wiring or just kind of zip tie it off to something so that it's not bouncing around all over the place, but it should be pretty straightforward as far as that goes. This can be used on any kind of domestic vehicle that uses a single filament bulb. You just really want to use this any time you're using a single light as that third brake light.

So maybe again, you're adding in a LED strip to your truck or another vehicle, and adding in that third brake light function, this allow you to use that and not have it flash. As far as the size, give you some quick measurements here. We'll get about nine and a half inches of wire to work with, call it about nine of really usable length there. And the little module itself, it's just about an inch or 7/8 of an inch long and about 5/8 or maybe 3/4 of an inch in diameter. So pretty small, pretty easy to set up just about anywhere you want to.Now, if you need some butt connectors to go with this, you can find a lot of options here at etrailer.com. I would probably suggest using the pink ones.

Those will be for your smaller gauge wire, which this looks like it's about 18 gauge, so that will probably do you. If you're connecting it to anything that's a little bigger, you probably want to go with the blue, which is for 16 to 14 gauge wire, but you can find all of those here at etrailer.com to go with this install.I hope this has been helpful in deciding if this is going to be the right part for you. We do have a lot of other lighting accessories and wiring here at etrailer.com for all kinds of stuff, so check it out. Thanks for watching.

3rd Brake Light Logic Module - PP20-702

Average Customer Rating:  4.3 out of 5 stars   (107 Customer Reviews)

This light module filters out unwanted turn signal input from tail lights to ensure your 3rd brake light activates only when brakes are applied. Required when using a single light as a third brake light.

I have a small camper trailer and added a Haloview CA115 backup camera and light combo. I wanted the light to work as a center brake light. This fit my needs exactly and was supper easy to wire in. Could not be happier.

This module is doing the job!

The
story:

A good looking all windows included long bed Ranger camper shell topper came along, it had the interior and brake lights but the wires were cut back.

There are non-working or completely absent 3rd brake lights on toppers all around here on vehicles. However, you just never know, and now my Ranger's cab's 3rd brake light would be covered with the topper on it.

I didn't want to start cutting wires on my old, old, but relatively nice Ranger in case I made the wrong cut. So I through about using the 4-flat trailer harness as I had that free (and I had an old harness piece from an old boat wiring kit). But the turn signal would cause it to blink.

I tried countless combinations of the wiring running off the 4-flat trailer connector. I had really odd things happening during the trial and error process, such as the blown fuse (first time ever for me) to the warning chime in the cab telling when the lights or keys were in the ignition going off when I applied the brakes.

So I thought I would try this logic module out.

At first I over thought it and had tried a couple combinations out with some old boat trailer lights that might have been cool on the topper.

But then simple and straightforward ended up being the way to go.

The green wire on the logic module to the brake light. The yellow wire to either turn signal connecting wire. A separate spare piece of wire from the brake light to the trailer harness ground. That's it.

The topper is not on the truck as of this review, I hope to get it painted since the green topper clashes with the red truck. When I get it on, I can easily plug the -4-flat harness into the trailer harness. It's rare for me to use the trailer.

I can easily revisit the wiring in the future, using the 12-volt power supply from the harness hook up I could power topper interior lights on switch or add lights to the topper. I could very well splice on the trailer wiring harness as well under the truck if I need the trailer harness for the trailer without cutting into my Ranger's wiring.

Either way, this module made getting that third brake light to not blink and illuminate when the brakes are applied. That's what I wanted.

Flashes third brake light with turn signals until the brake is pressed then it goes solid. Does not work as described

Comments
It is disappointing to hear that it is not working for you. I do have a few suggestions for you. The first is just to double check that it is wired correctly. The two yellow wires coming from the module should be spliced into the stop and turn circuit wires on your trucks trailer connector - whether it is a 4-Way or 7-Way-. This will then stop those circuits from reaching the 3rd brake light when the green wire from the module is wired into the light assembly. You also want to make sure that the combined amp draw is less than 1.5 amp. If this is exactly how you have it wired, please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further

Sorry I wish it can be a good review but there is no diagram and having trouble. The led light set that I installed was awesome, but still can't get the light to work as a brake light, right side sign still makes it blink

The product works fine. I am not sure why so many people write reviews, claiming that the module does not function properly. (not only on the etrailer site) It is an electronic circuit, deploying a 'logic' to detect whether a turn-signal is applied as opposed to a brake. Evidently it is important to connect the module exactly as the instructions say, to make sure the trailer lights are all properly grounded, and that the current draw through the module does not exceed specs.
One suggestion for etrailer might be to demonstrate how the logic module works in your product video, perhaps by using some sort of bread-board wiring.

by:

Easy hookup for truck cap’s third brake light. I piggybacked the L turn mini fuse and the R turn mini fuse and connected the module there at the fuse block under the hood—it rests under the cover. One pair back for power and ground to the light. I didn’t tap into the trailer plug so as to prevent future water/salt/corrosion issues.Nice product.

by:

Was what I needed. Fast friendly customer service ! Now my topper brake light doesn’t blink with the blinker!

by:

Does not work. Wired per diagram instructions. Grounding is correct as this appears to be the stock explanation when device doesn’t perform as described. Do not buy. Not as advertised. A.r.e topper third brake light still flashes when turn signal is activated.

Comments
We have come across this before. When installing the Pacer Performance 3rd Brake Light Module # PP20-702
3rd Brake Light Logic Module
$18.13
you will need to connect the yellow wires to both the right and left turn signal and then the green wire will wire into your 3rd brake light on your truck topper.

by:

Hooked up the module just like the drawing under the bed at my 7-pin wiring harness and when I hit the brakes , it worked and both turn signals work. When I let off the brakes , and turn the turn signals on the 3rd brake light flashes. Sounds like the module is bad.

Comments
The Pacer Performance 3rd Brake Light Logic Module # PP20-702 should indeed filter out those turn signals so that the 3rd brake light on your topper does not flash when they are on. If you have the module installed and the 3rd brake light is still flashing with the turn signals you will need to make sure everything is wired correctly. The two yellow wires coming from the module should be spliced into the stop and turn circuit wires on your trucks trailer connector - whether it is a 4-Way or 7-Way-. This will then stop those circuits from reaching the 3rd brake light when the green wire from the module is wired into the light assembly. If this is exactly how you have it wired please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.

Module didn't filter out the turn signals as advertised. The 3rd light lite anytime the turn signal was activated and or the brakes. Not supposed to happen. Only when both brake lights lite. Had to call back in to get another one shipped out.

by:

The third brakelight module was easy to install, and works great, to isolate the high brake light on our Leer camper shell. The third light comes on with the service brake lights and 4-way flashers, but is properly isolated from the turn signals. It is a win-win.

Comments
Very dependable after over a year. I must have followed installation instructions pretty closely.

The product is easy to wire for a 3rd brake light Leer truck cap on 2022 Chevrolet Colorado

by:

Used this module to add a 3rd brake light on the back of a tilt trailer. It works great! Easy to hook up.

by:

Worked perfectly with a little jiggery pokery. Required led bulbs polarized the right direction to work, but we figured it out. Did not work with incandescent bulbs.

by:

I installed it about thirty minutes after receiving it. Very easy, straight forward installation. Performed as advertised.

by:

Quick and simple installation - works like a charm. I used it to add a third brake light behind the spare tire of my classic Bronco. Some folks said it may not work with LED brake lights, but that's what I have on my Bronco and it worked just fine.

by:

I was skeptical of this module before purchasing because I didn't know about it. Have used other brands to perform these 3rd brake wiring functions previously. Soldered it between 4-pin connector and rear tail/brake light. Simple install and works great.

by:

Good stuff

by:

I used this logic module along with this wiring harness to wire up the third brake light on the Leer camper shell that I recently purchased for my 2012 Tundra. Everything went perfectly and resulted in a nice, clean professional installation with no issues.

Comments
Update, I wired this module up exactly as diagramed in the instructions. It seemed to work properly so I used butt connectors to make all the connections. The next day checked functions and third brake light blinks with the turn signals. I took all my connections apart, as well as double checking my ground connections and re-wired. Same result. third brake light blinks when either turn signal is activated. However, if brake is applied when turn signal is activated the third brake light does not blink. So if I could change my rating to one star I would. Love e-trailer but this item is not recommended. Now I have to look for another solution.

by:

Logic module wired as directed allowed 3rd brake light to work perfectly on camper shell. I plug a 4 way trailer connector into the already installed 4 way plug on my Ford truck, run the wires up my truck body and the wires end in another trailer ‘female’ plug. A second ‘male’ plug is wired to the camper shell and includes the logic module so when my camper shell is mounted on my truck it’s a quick 4 way plug in to be legal with a working 3rd brake light.
The cost of this was just the logic module - cheap - the cost to go to installer and have this set up done professionally over $100 - thanks etrailer

by:

This module is a great way to add a 3rd brake light to a trailer.

by:

Worked as described. Fairly easy to connect up. Surely beats running a wire from the cab.

by:

I'm a retired truck driver. I get a little fanatical about lights. I wanted a third brake light for my trailer. This piece makes it possible. Works out great.

by:

This part did not work for me.I used it on a red lighted license plate frame. The license plate frame would still blink with the left turn signal, which I thought this module would take care of.After numerous attempts @ it,it didn’t. So I kept the module in case I would ever need it again.Needless to say I threw the lighted license plate frame away.

by:

Ordered two, neither filtered out the blinker. Not a wiring issue on my end!

Comments
That is a bummer that two of them are not working for you. When installing there are a few things to consider. One is that you want to make sure everthing is wired correctly. I know that you are not thinking it is a wiring issue however it does not hurt to double check. If this is exactly how you have it wired please let me know and I will be happy to look into this further.

In most cases when this occurs, it's down to the wiring being connected to the wrong spots on the 7 way trailer plug. I've attached a wiring diagram that shows this in better detail that I would ask you to confirm is how you have this wired. In order to successfully wire in a third brake light on a camper shell you need to identify first if the taillights on the vehicle are combined or separate meaning, are the stop and turn signals on the same circuit or separate. There is nothing that says you can't use 2 LED lights with the Pacer Performance 3rd Brake Light Logic Module # PP20-702. And since LED lights draw such little power it is very unlikely that 2 LED lights would overdraw this module which is rated at 1.5 amps.
