There really isn't much to the pull-pin on a typical swivel jack. It's usually a J-bolt made of raw steel. It gets the job done, but with it constantly exposed to the elements, it'll probably start to show signs of rust and corrosion after a few years. That'll cause it to stick and be a major pain to use, especially without any kind of grip on it.
On this Dutton-Lainson jack, the plastic housing protects the swiveling components, including the pull-pin, from the elements, so you won't get that sticking and jerking movement. Plus the pin has a soft-touch grip to make pulling it even easier.
Unlike other footplates that just offer a flat surface, this one articulates, which will help it to get a grip on rocky or uneven terrain. Perfect for campgrounds and, well, anywhere that isn't paved.
Some trailer jacks have just 1 layer of paint or powder coat to protect them from the elements. When - not if - they get scuffed, it won't be long before the raw steel underneath starts to rust. And without any kind of protection, that could happen in just a few weeks. You wouldn't want that to happen to this jack, especially when its bold look is half the reason you want it in the first place, right?
We love this trailer jack because it doesn't just look rugged, it plays the part, too. Beneath that black, UV resistant powder coat, there's an extra layer of rust protection that Dutton-Lainson calls TUFFPLATE. It's 5 times tougher than standard zinc plating, and lasts about 30% longer than a traditional powder coat finish. This second layer serves as a second line of defense against rust and corrosion. So, when it gets scuffed, scratched, or chipped, it shows battle scars, not wounds.
A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

Jake: Hey, guys. Jake here with etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at and I'm going to show you how to get in place the Dutton-Lainson Square Tube Pivoting Tongue Jack. You're going to be able to take this jack up with two different support orientations. You're going to have a wheel on our left here and a foot pack on the one on our right. The foot pack is going to be better for those applications on a trailer that's too heavy to be able to roll around anyway, so you get the foot pack and it'll stay planted on the ground.
Now if you have a boat trailer that's a little bit lighter when there's no boat loaded and you want to pull your trailer around by hand, you can do that with the one with the wheel. We do have both these here at etrailer. Just check it out.The only thing that's going to differ between these two jacks is the weight rating. The jack with the foot pack is going to have a 2000 pound weight rating and the jack with the wheel is going to have a 1700 pound weight rating. Something I like about this jack more than others, some that might come on your trailer factory, is it's going to have a more heavy duty, more aggressive look to it.
It's going to be able to withstand that weight that you put on it.The wheels are going to be 8" tall, which is going to be nice and tall to be able to roll over anything that might be in your yard or on your driveway. They're also going to be 3" wide so that they don't sink whether you're pointed over gravel or through your yard.The handle is going to be a nice wide handle, wide enough to be able to get your hand around it with these grooves for your fingers to apply grip. It's also going to be a rubberized material so that your hand doesn't slip if you're cranking your trailer up in wet conditions. The jack is going to come equipped with a grease Zerk on the backside so that you can easily grease the gears that are for the handle so that you have a smooth operation every time you use your jack.To get your jack in the stowed position, it's simple. You pull out this little handle here, pull out the knob, and slide it until it clicks into place.
Now, one little tip is when you're hauling your trailer, rather than just having this handle swing down, you can get yourself a little strap and strap this handle to the jack so that it's not hanging down.With the jack, you're going to have 12" of travel, so you're going to have a lot of room to be able to put it on many different vehicles if you took it off a different vehicle. You're going to be able to fit this jack on trailer tongues that are between 3-5".I really like this jack personally because it's not going to take away from the looks of any trailer that you put it on. Whether you have it on a boat trailer with your really nice ski boat on it, it's going to add the looks of your trailer with that dark charcoal gray powder coat finish, it's going to hold up against rust and corrosion.Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's go ahead and show you how easy it is to get in place. Whether you're replacing a damaged jack like we have here or just replacing a old jack, you'll need to remove old jack first. If you have a swivel jack, it's most likely going to have a snap ring.
Here we have a pair of snap ring pliers. We'll pull that ring off. Just set that aside. Now we can take our jack.Now with our old Jack removed, we can go ahead and get our new and in place. Start by sliding our bolts through our top holes and we can slide our plate on the back side. Slide on a couple of our nuts just to hold the plate in place.Now, we'll take a 5/8" socket with do 11/16" wrench and tighten down our hardware.Once you have everything tightened down and safely secured on your jack, you're ready to hit the road. With all that being said, that's going to do it for our look at the Dutton-Lainson Square Tube Pivoting Tongue Jack.

For a simple trailer jack, it doesnt get any better than this.
I bought this jack to replace the jack (also a Dutton-Lainson) that came with my brand-new Aluma trailer. Aluma had drilled the jack bolt holes through the tongue from factory (and not very straight, to boot), but secured them on the backside with washers and nuts (no backing plate). The fact that this jack includes a backing plate was a major plus for me as it will provide a much more mechanically sturdy mount of the jack to the trailer tongue. Additionally, the wheel on the factory jack was very narrow and was sinking into my gravel driveway fairly quickly. The wheel on this new jack is much wider and seems more stout.
In short... This is a huge upgrade from the jack that came with my trailer. I did have to go to the hardware store for shorter 7/16-14 bolts because the ones that came with this jack were too long, but that's not the fault of this product; they include hardware that is most likely to satisfy a majority of customers.
The pivot action on the jack is extremely smooth, as is the crank. I'd like to try and adapt this for a drill, but even if I can't make that work, this jack is going to serve me very well.
The build quality is outstanding and I really can't find any way to fault this product. I'm glad to have the much wider wheel and the backing plate which provides for a much sturdier mount to the Aluma's tongue. The jack is also fully serviceable with repair parts available and a full exploded parts diagram included.
what I like most about this jack is I push my boat around by hand alot in my boat shed.I bought this jack because my previous jack the wheel would not easily change direction I was constantly directing it with my foot. This jack will easily move towards the direction I am pushing no more sore toes.
I was expecting better. There’s a lot of slop in the mechanism. I use it on a smooth, flat concrete floor but still have to yank it around to change direction when trying to move the boat. The wheel would rather slide sideways than rotate much of the time. The height travel is also not enough and I had to put a block of wood in to get it to a usable place. Even then sometimes I have to lift up the boat by hand to release it from the hitch because it won’t go low enough. I can’t say I can recommend this one.
I just installed it and have not actually used it yet, but it looks to be extremely solid and well-made and I really appreciate the extended jacking height and the two ZR fittings to allow easy grazing.
The three year warranty, also speaks volumes about the confidence they have in this product

Seems like a great Dutton-Lainson jack. The large wheel makes it easy to move over obstacles in the parking lots.
Disappointed the mounting hardware seems a bit flimsy: my brackets bent when I tightened the bolts and I may have to replace them with thick steel bars with spacer holes to be safe. See attached pictures.
It seems like a minor and easy thing to get right and it wouldn't have added almost anything to the cost.
This was disappointing out of the box. First, this will not fit on a Magic Tilt aluminum trailer unless mounted sideways. The backing rails, which are properly sized, are five hole, but the face is four, and mounting sideways means bolts won't be flush with top and/or bottom of frame. This is clearly not the way this should be done, half the mount that should be against the frame is against nothing. Secondly, and most disconcerting, are the four carriage bolts that hold the mount swivel are about 1/16" too long, preventing the mount from laying flush against the trailer frame anyway. So I had to make a trip to the hardware store for replacement hardware, disassemble and reassemble with the shorter carriage bolts. Both of these issues just seem frustratingly odd. This replaced a $50 TS jack that salt did in after five years and is no longer made. The D-L has a much smoother motion, but after mounting it has the same amount of play when extended as the cheaper jack.
One last note, this was packed loosely in a large box. Some of the paint was already scuffed off the part that holds the wheel, so I'm not optimistic about the protection this "Tuffplate" finish offers if cardboard can remove it. The bag of hardware was still stapled, but two of the mounting bolts were loose and one of the split washers was just missing. I used a spare nylon locknut on that bolt.
It should not be this hard to find a decent, hassle-free jack at a decent price.

Very well made product. Works perfect for 30' pontoon trailer. This will fit 5" tall frame tube. Just need to turn the bracket 90 deg from the normal position of smaller tubes.
Strong, Sturdy, Extra Height, lots of compliments. Installed on a Shorelander trailer w/ 242 Yamaha boat. Replaced the inferior OEM jack. Bonus, I was able to install it on the drivers side. The OEM was on the passenger side. That was a pain having to climb over the trailer each time.
I was originally trying to find something that would bolt upto the Shelby welded bracket. I'm so glad I went with this unit instead. It's heavy duty, large wheel for easy maneuvers, greese fittings, easy up like butta! The black color is different and goes well with my red Stingray. The customer service is over the top!
