Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2000 Chevy Silverado Part 1

On this 2000 C/K Series Pickup we are going to install brake controller part number 39523 from Tekonsha. This is their Powertrac brake controller. This factory tow package also applies to Chevrolet and GMC trucks as far back as I believe the early 90s. I do not know down to 88 or not. It was new bought when this body style came out. We are going to begin our install work from the rear of the vehicle and work our way forward. The tow package on this body style is all stored right here behind the bumper and this channel underneath the bed of the pickup truck. All you have got to do is cut this down and pull it out. There is a harness that you pull out and it is designed to be spliced onto. For the towing package from a brake controller and a hot lead it is actually ran inside the frame and it does not come that far back. That is located on the frame on the driver side. 00:48

Normally this harness is pushed up against the frame here and you really can not see it. You will never know where to look. You will never find it. It is a lot easier to take down the spare tire but since this has already been pulled out for a previous install we will just leave it alone and you can see that the wires we need to use have already been exposed. Just move the hot lead going to the battery and this is the break lead and they both go up to the front of the vehicle. When we get to the front of the vehicle we will show you where they are terminated at. 01:15

For now we will start with the rear of the vehicle and make our hook ups here. This is what you will get when you pull all of the wire harnesses out. You get the blue and the orange wire for the brake controller and the hot lead. Variably they are just a hair too short to work with because eventually you will have to replace the connector and you will be too short of wire so you might as well add a length of about a foot to it and that way you will have enough room for future access. All wires need splicing tubing in this harness here for the turn signals and the running lights and the brake lights and they do provide a nice ground wire too. So we will get this ready to install. We will just cut this little plastic away and strip the wires and we will be installing a 7-pole connector. Once you get the plastic off and the tape you are going to have a little assembly like this. Basically all the wires are just kind of terminated into one area just to keep it from corroding. But we will need to use four of the five running lights, the ground wire, the right turn, and the left turn, and the light green is actually your reverse light wire. That is optional. You can use it or not. It depends on if your trailer has it. We will go ahead and install it and show you where it goes in the 7-pole anyway. 02:20

Just to go over color codes really fast. Yellow is going to be left turn, green is going to be the right turn, this will be your ground wire, brown is going to be your running light circuit and the light green will be your reverse light lead. Now that you have your wires here we will just add some extensions to them really fast. Since we do not have any orange wire we used the black wire. The black is a common color for a 12 volt power supply too so that is why we used that. I am just going to re-thread these wires through the frame. We will leave these alone for now and then we will go ahead and install our 7-pole bracket and 7-pole. For our bracket we are just going to mount it directly to the bottom of the bumper. These year vehicles have a nice flat edge to install a bracket to. We are just going to put it right there and drill straight to it. Next what we are going to do is disassemble our 7-pole, run our wires inside, and make the connections. By the way we are using part number 18138. I got these two screws hopefully the insides will come out and what we will do is thread our wire through the back side out the front and then make our connections. Sometimes it helps to put on a little lubricant to get the seal on there. You do not need to shove it all the way up that far but we just need working room for now. On the wire ends we will put some little ring terminals on there to make it a little bit easier to attach to the screws inside. 04:26

The light green wire we are not going to use a ring terminal on because that actually goes in the center here so we do not need one. Okay to start our reverse lead and that goes into the center of the 7-pole. That is just for the reverse lights. I will show you the different wiring codes. What goes to what because on 7-poles it is not color for color hardly at all. We will start with the easy ones, the ones that do match up. We are going to run blue to blue. Blue will be your brake lead and that goes to blue on the brakes on your 7-pole. Next we will go to black and then convert it from orange to black that is your hot lead and so black on the 7-pole will always be for the hot lead. That is our constant 12 volts. We will do our ground wire and white on the 7-pole is ground also. We will do that one next. Now we will go to the ones that kind of change colors and functions. To me the easiest way to remember is to do the exact opposite of the color you are working with. Brown is running lights on the circuit for running lights on the trailer and on the truck however it is going to be green for the 7-pole function. Basically it is going to be green to brown and brown to green and yellow to red. Green lug will go to brown wire. Then we will go to our brown lug and that will be right turn for the 7-pole but it will be green on our truck and also it will be green typically on the utility trailer. Lastly we will do our left turn which will go to the red lug on our 7-pole. Just pull all of the wires back through. Then reinstall the screws to hold it in place. Double check to make sure the screws are in place. Then run some electric tape around it to seal up the rest. Now that we have got everything sealed up we will go ahead and just install it in our bracket. Just use the four screws to hold it in place. We will run our excess wire back up behind here and zip tie it and keep it secured.

Prior to ordering the wiring harness and mounting brackets for my truck, I called etrailer.com to ensure I was identifying the right products. The customer service person I spoke to was very knowledgeable. The shipment arrived on time. The wiring harness worked and continues to work well (easy install). The bracket however had a slight issue with fit. I spoke to etrailer.com again and they quickly rectified the issues and sent a new bracket at no cost. Things don't always go right, but it is how we respond to issues that matter. These guys have it together. Well done. 705227

Now after reading at least 50 reviews which were mostly all bad reviews, I was really skeptical to buy from etrailer. There was some really great reviews also. I decided to give them a chance anyway and ordered a drawtite hitch, wiring harness, and a electronic brake controller. Product came in as promised and nothing damaged. Came with all instructions plus the videos from online. Installation was piece of cake. I didn't know that 4way/7way mounting bracket and adapter harness for brake controller(from vehicle to brake controller) didn't come with the order. I ordered them and etrailer gave me free shipping and arrived really fast. Also customer service experience was good. I recommend etrailer to friends and family! 388065

Your products are excellent but your return items are very slow to process. When ordering products you are fast to hit the credit card with a charge. I returned a item on January 19th but no response by January 28th. At least you could acknowledge that you received the item. 64413

Comments

We do not charge for an order until it ships. If we charge quickly, it is because we shipped quickly. We received the returned item on 122 and started checking it in and processing the return. And today on 1/29 the request to issue the credit back to your card was placed. We always do our best to facilitate and process everything as expeditiously as possible, but returns take time since things have to be manually processed.

I modified the bracket to facilitate installation of 7 prong adapter on 2006 Expedition. Had to use some heat to change the angle to 45 degrees, and cut a couple slots for the clamps, but works when nothing else did. Clamped directly onto the tow bar, and still sturdy after 800 miles. 524369

So...this didn't actually fit my wiring kit #118273. I could only get one bolt to line up; however, since I had to get on the road I tightened that one fastener down and make a 700-mile trip, picked up a rental trailer, and drove 700 miles back without issue. What I really want to talk about is the great service I got when I reported the issue. Kevin D researched it and got me a replacement in the mail quickly, and I was able to install it (and use all the intended fasteners). I think that the response to the issue says a great deal about the quality of their customer service. p.s. the bracket that worked was PK12711U 457317

I read several reviews beforehand that stated the bracket is a little thin and would flex when connecting the trailer lights, so I ordered two of these and coupled them together to make it a stronger bracket. (Just have to open up the corresponding holes in one of the brackets so the screws will still feed through. Now it's much stronger and won't bend at all when making a connection. I decided to mount the bracket sitting on top of the bracket weld of my Draw-tite hitch so that it didn't hang so low below the hitch and risk getting damaged coming off a curb or hitting a low spot in the road. I have a 2011 Toyota Highlander and used an Exacto knife to cut out some of the plastic body panel so the harnessed wiring would fit through. Looks almost factory style to me. And it works great! 469941

Exactly what we needed for my Ranger. We will be buying another for the 1973 Bronco. We usually pull our 16' Scamp with my full-size 1996 Bronco. Some clown mechanic replaced the radiator cap with a defective one and we had to drive home with an overheating 96 Bronco! It totally ruined our vacation! If we had this before, we would have just switched vehicles! Soon, we'll have 3 Fords adaptable to pull the Scamp. Thank you very much for a great product and good price. 147974

The wiring harness and associated hardware arrived this morning just before I left for work. A quick inspection and everything appeared to be there and in excellent condition. I'm impressed with the quality of the products and look forward to actually installing the system into my Ford Transit 350 van this weekend. I'll post a final review after the installation and testing. 729134

Does what it's supposed to do. I used this on my draw-tite hitch on my '17 Nissan Frontier to mount the stock 7-pin connector. I had to trim the tabs off the connector and drill new holes for the screws on the connector, but it works just fine. Saved me the trouble of fabbing and painting something. 723176

In the past I had always spliced-in the wires when installing wiring for a trailer hitch on a vehicle, but never again after seeing how simple this kit makes the job. With weather proof connectors that snap together, it will be much more reliable than the old splice method. And, it is impossible to wire it incorrectly, which could happen when you're looking for the right wire to splice into (or so I've heard). 720923

A fine product, but it doesn't fit the C56226 Curt wiring harness as was recommended to me. The screw holes don't line up. I had to drill new ones in the C56226. 665076

This is small bracket designed to hold the trailer pigtail in place on the bumper and was installed aftermarket on an older vehicle. It does what it is supposed to do but could be constructed of a better grade of metal. My 1st bracket only lasted a couple of years before rusting out and became unstable. I was afraid that my pigtail would come loose before I noticed it. I just happened to notice the degradation of the bracket when I was hooking up my camper. As stated above, a more durable metal and rust resisting paint would make this bracket perfect. 652166

Everything received and worked well. I was able to remount the trailer plug and things are working great. I did have to make one slight modifciation to the product. In order to avoid cutting wires and rewiring the plug I simply cut a slit in the bottom of the holder, opened it enough to slide the wires through and attached it..problem solved!! 649682

Good quality bracket with all the necessary hardware. Replaced the factory tow package bracket for flat 4-pin connector on my 2019 Toyota Highlander. The mounting holes did not quite line up with the existing bracket holes, but I was able to enlarge one of the holes on the vehicle mounting bracket with a drill to get this new round 7-pin bracket to fit. Nice looking, clean installation. It's sad that Toyota is still using a flat 4-pin connector for their factory installed tow package on a vehicle rated to tow 5,000 LBS. 646981

I don't know where to start when reviewing this company. First, the products they sell are top notch, at prices no one can beat. Secondly their online support with videos and detailed installation procedures is "unmatched" by any online company. If they can't walk or talk you through it, it probably can't be done! But perhaps the best quality product they have is their staff. When you call they are most courteous, extremely helpful, and will go above and beyond making your transaction right. I have purchased from etrailer numerous times for these very reasons. And my latest purchase ran into shipping problems (not etrailers fault) and yet Stacey A., Greg & others whose names I forgot (my apologies) made it right. Bottom line, as a frequent online shopper, I can only wish that other online companies would look at etrailers business model and choose to emulate them. This is how online SHOULD be. Thanks again etrailer.com 638166

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness for a 2017 GMC Acadia
  • All of the 2017 GMC Acadia's came with the factory tow package wiring. In order to add a trailer connector to the vehicle you would want to use part # 118720 for a 4-way or part # 118276 for a 7-way. These custom fit connectors will plug into your factory wiring harness which is located behind the access cover at the center of your rear bumper. This will allow you to easily connect to your factory wiring and have a 7-way. If you only want the 4-way flat since you are using a small trailer, you can alternatively use the # 118525. Since you don't need brakes, 12 V charging power, or reverse lights on the trailer the other wires can just remain unconnected. You can transport the trailer from point A to point B without those other wires connected. Without connecting the additional wires on the # 30717, you will still have turn, stop, and taillight functions on the...

  • Recommendation to Convert Generator Power to 12V 7-way Trailer Connection
  • Generators do not typically have a 12 volt power converter, so I recommend using the NOCO Genius UltraSafe Battery Charger and Maintainer - AC to DC - 12V/24V - 7.2 Amp # 329-G7200 and splicing the connector that would go to the battery terminals into a 7-way connector like # 30717. • Recommended 7-Way Trailer Connector On A 2016 Chevrolet Traverse Without Factory Tow Package
  • If you are looking to match a factory type set-up on your 2016 Chevrolet Traverse, then the round factory plug you are referring to is a 7-way trailer socket. Because you don't have the factory tow package, we need to take a couple steps to get us there. The first step is to see if the factory wiring for a tow package is present. Look behind the bumper on the passenger side for a connector. If there is a connector, we will just need # 18138. This will allow us to simply connect...
