Simple Removal for Full Bed Access

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to the included Turnoverball gooseneck hitch. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work. When you're done towing, the Companion can be removed for complete bed access.

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Trailer Hitch

B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

The included Turnoverball serves as a sturdy, custom base for installing the Companion in the bed of your truck, but it's also one of the most recognizable gooseneck hitches on the market.

Gooseneck Specs:

  • Gross towing weight: 30,000 lbs
  • Vertical load limit: 7,500 lbs
  • Ball size: 2-5/16"

B&W Companion Installed in Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch

With the B&W Turnoverball underbed gooseneck trailer hitch you get the best of both worlds. When you go to tow a gooseneck trailer, the Turnoverball creates a sturdy, dependable connection with your trailer. And when you're done towing, you can stow the ball upside down in the hitch to get full bed access and a clean appearance. When you're ready to tow your fifth wheel trailer, just install the Companion in the ball hole in place of the gooseneck ball and lock the post in place using the built-in handle. You can remove the fifth wheel when you're done towing, leaving your truck bed open once again.

This kit is custom designed for your vehicle. The mounting brackets bolt to existing holes in your truck's frame. While some modification is required - you will need to cut a 4" diameter hole in your bed for the hitch ball and drill holes for the built-in safety chain loops - there is no need to weld onto or to drill into your frame.

Once you have the brackets and center section installed, set up the operating handle. This handle is designed to be accessed from the rear driver's-side wheel well. On the end of the handle is the heavy-duty steel pin that secures the mounting post of the Companion (or the base of the gooseneck hitch ball).

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Assembly of the B&W Companion

The Companion's pivot arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

  • 5th Wheel Hitch Options for a 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali
Since your 2015 GMC 2500 has the 6-1/2 foot bed you will want to go with a sliding 5th wheel hitch. There are a couple of different options that you can go with here. If you are wanting to go with a 5th wheel hitch that uses the standard base rails then I recommend going with the Curt A20 # C16541 along with Base Rails Kit # RP50066-58. This 5th wheel hitch is one of the best hitches that we currently carry due to the dual-jaw system and the pivoting head to help secure the king pin and...

  • 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500 6.5 Bed Puck System Recommendations
I do have a few options for you to add an underbed kit on your 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500 6-1/2' bed and the real differential is the style you are looking for. For a true 4-point puck system you need the Elite Series Under-Bed Gooseneck Hitch # RP30158-68. This is closer to the OEM puck system style for your truck and you will need the Rail Adapter # RP30156 to connect your 16K Husky slider to this system. I personally like this system best because it gives you a wider variety of options. We...

Yes, the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400, which uses the Base # BWRVB3405 you referenced, will fit the Custom Underbed Installation Kit # BWGNRK1012-5W for your 2015 GMC Sierra 2500. This is one of my favorite towing setups because you gain the ability to tow either a 5th wheel or gooseneck trailer, the installation looks really clean, and it's all made here in the USA! The only other thing I recommend checking out if you don't already have it is a 7-Way wiring kit for your truck bed. Installing...

Yes, you can remove the B&W Turnover Ball Hitch # BWGNRK1012-5W and install bed rails, # BWRVK2506, and the B&W Patriot 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch 18K, # BWRVK3255. The only issue that you will have on you 2015 GMC Sierra 3500 will be the remaining holes in the bed from the gooseneck hitch. You will instead want the # BWRVR2402 for 2017 and 2018 models. The # BWRVR2401 is the fit for 2011-2016 models. I've attached some photos of the installation details for your 2018 F-250 to assist.

  • Below Bed 5th Wheel Installation Kit Needed For A 2000 Ford F-250
Hey Judah, For below bed you would need to go with the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BWGNRK1108 and then use either the fixed base Companion # BWRVK3500 or slider base Companion # BWRVK3400-5W depending on whether you have a long bed or short bed. If your bed is less than 8' then you'll want to go with the slider base to gain some additional turning clearance when making tight turns. This setup would also allow you to tow gooseneck trailers but removing the hitch...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Gooseneck Ball in 2005 Ram 2500 Short Bed
Hi Mike; I noticed you were looking at a B&W 5th wheel hitch. Is your gooseneck hitch the B&W Turnoverball? The hole for the ball would be square if it is. If so, you can use the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W. However, this is a heavy sucker so not exactly the most manageable for one person. The Andersen Aluminum Ultimate 5th Wheel Connection 2 Gooseneck # 3220 will also work (works with any brand gooseneck hitch). This hitch is incredibly light with the base at 35 lbs so that sounds more...

  • How to Determine Correct Height Setting for 5th Wheel Hitch
Choosing the right height setting for your 5th wheel hitch is a combination of a few different variables. First of all you want your towing setup to be as level as possible. With your Montana High Country 340BH level you will want to measure from the ground to the bottom of your pin box where the king pin is at. The next step is to choose which of the 3 height settings on your 5th wheel hitch, 17", 18" or 19", gives you the most level ride. Simply measure from the ground to the head unit...

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch Setup For Full Bed Access On A 2011 Ford F350
Hello Jonathan, thanks for reaching out. The best way to keep full bed access on your 2011 F350 will be to go with a B&W Tunoverball/Companion hitch setup. For your truck you can use # BWGNRK1111-5W for the installation kit and the # BWRVK3400-5W Companion 5th Wheel Hitch. There are a few big advantages to going with this setup. First, the installation kit is actually a B&W gooseneck hitch. So, with the hitch removed from the bed, you will still have the full bed at your disposal with...

  • Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 Short Bed To Navigate Tight Campground Turns
I can help you navigate those tight turns in your 2014 Ram 2500. Since the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5GX1216 that you referenced does not move the pivot point further back you really do not gain much clearance for tight turns with a short bed truck. Also, if you use an offset adapter like this you can not use an additional offset adapter like the B and W extender you referenced. This would cause too much leverage on the trailer. Instead I would highly...

  • 5th Wheel Hitch for Clean Bed Once Removed on a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 Short Bed
If you are wanting to keep the bed of your 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 clean then I highly recommend using the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W because it mounts in the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1059-5W. Instead of having bed rails in the bed of your truck you just have the gooseneck hitch ball receiver and safety chain loops as you can see in the attached photo. The Companion is made right here in the USA, has a 20,000 lb weight capacity (which is more than your pickup), 17" - 19" of height...

  • How to Measure 5th Wheel Hitch Height for a 2023 GMC Sierra 3500 W/ a Short Bed
Ok so in order to determine the correct height setting for your 5th wheel and your GMC Sierra 3500, you'd need to level your setup and measure from the ground to the bottom of the pin box and choose a height setting that gives you the most level ride (17" - 19" for the B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W you're looking at). Keep in mind that we recommend having at least 5-6" of space between the bed rails and your truck/trailer to make sure you don't have any contact between the two. Since...

  • I Own A 2017 Ram 2500 with No Factory Installed Puck System Do You Sell An Aftermarket System?
The factory puck system that was available for your 2017 Ram 2500 is integrated into the frame and cannot be installed as an aftermarket part. There are some underbed mounted fifth wheel hitch install kits but as of right now none of them install a puck system. The only underbed kit available for your Ram is the B&W, part # BWGNRK1384-5W, that uses the B&W companion hitch, part # BWRVK3400-5W. (I have a picture attached that will show how this will look installed on your bed.) The Custom...

  • 2018 Ram 2500 with Rambox and the Sidewinder Pinbox
That you are looking at the B&W options for 5th wheel hitches is great; they are possibly the best manufacturer of hitches currently on the market. We can get you set up for proper hauling of a 5th wheel with your Rambox equipped 2500 series Ram however, the use of the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider # BWRVK3400-5W that you have listed is not the way to go with a Sidewinder pinbox. If you do not have the factory installed puck system in your 2018 Ram 2500, that is not...

  • Best Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch For Clean Bed on 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 With or Without Puck System
These are really good questions and we can definitely set you up with the right 5th wheel hitch for your 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 short (also called standard) bed, but to quickly answer your question about underbed brackets, there aren't any that are universal (as nice as that would be), they are only designed to be used with specific 5th wheel hitches. That said, you do have a number of different options, which I'll list for you and then make my recommendation. 5th Wheel Hitch for 2020...

  • Troubleshooting 5th Wheel Chucking with Andersen Ultimate Gooseneck Hitch
The Andersen Ultimate is a nice option for being lightweight, but it is not any help with chucking as you described. It has absolutely no built in assistance for that function. You are pulling a really big trailer, so the chucking will be worse with that than a lightweight 5th wheel because there is simply more momentum so you will feel it more. There really isn't a way to help with the chucking you are experiencing with that particular hitch as air ride will definitely help some but...

  • How to Determine Clearance for Gooseneck Hitch on 2016 Dodge Ram 2500
You need to use the following calculation to find if you have enough clearance: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the gooseneck ball to the truck cab B = Offset used C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2. So your A is 35" and C is 48" which means right now Clearance = -13". You really want A to be 4" more than C so in this case you need a 17" offset. Even if you combine an offset ball with an offset adapter you aren't going to be able to get to 17" or even 13". The...

  • Options For Towing A 5th Wheel With A 2022 Toyota Tundra SR2 Short Bed
Hi Ingram! There is one option for adding a 5th wheel to your 2022 Toyota Tundra SR2 with the short bed, but it is a very good option. And I'm not just saying that as it's the only one. What you will need is the B&W Companion Sliding 5th Wheel Hitch w/ Turnoverball for Toyota Tundra - Dual Jaw - 20K # BW45XR. This gives you a gooseneck and a 5th wheel with the added benefit of there being no above bed rails in your bed, which I think is better. B&W makes the easiest to use sliding system...

  • 2015 Ram 2500 Shortbed Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation
If you had the OEM hitch prep package in the bed of your 2015 Ram 2500 (there would be 4 pucks for the hitch to install into in the bed of the truck), then yes the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch for Ram Towing Prep Package # BWRVK3600 that you referenced would fit your truck. But it doesn't look like you have the hitch prep package based on the vehicle info you ran through our fitguide. • Will B&W Companion Fit 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 Short Bed
Hi Eric; I'm not sure where you saw that but we have had other customers successfully install the # BWRVK3400-5W without any issues. If the design of the bed on your 2006 GMC Sierra 2500 would not allow the installation of the Companion we wouldn't list it as an option and B&W would have notes saying the Companion is not compatible. You can definitely use this 5th wheel hitch with your truck.

  • Best 5th Wheel Hitch Setup For 2018 GMC Sierra 2500 Denali Short Bed Without Factory Tow Package
Hello Darik, thanks for reaching out. Between the two setups you mentioned, the B&W companion setup is definitely the better option. The B&W hitches are just super solid and durable and I recommend them every chance I get. Here is what I recommend for your truck: - B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch w/ Custom Installation Kit - 30,000 lbs # BWGNRK1016 - B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Dual Jaw - 20,000 lbs # BWRVK3400-5W The Reese hitch you mentioned...

Hey Mitch! I can't tell from that picture if you'll have enough clearance or not with the fixed Companion # BWRVK3500. To determine your clearance you will need to measure and use the following formula: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab (you can use the center of your B&W Turnoverball) B = Length of pin box arm C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2 If you have less than 4" you need the Companion Slider # BWRVK3400-5W.

  • Under Bed 5th Wheel Installation Kit and Hitch for a 2017 Ford F-250 4x4 with 6-1/2 Foot Bed
There are below the bed 5th wheel installation kits for the 2017 Ford F-250; just not any Reese kits. The reason for that is Reese makes the factory under bed install kit for Ford so they tend not to release an aftermarket kit right away (or at all in some cases) which gives Ford exclusivity to it. If you do not already have a Reese Elite Series hitch then you can go with one of the other under bed kits and a hitch for it. I would need to know the bed length of your truck and if it is...
