Bearing Buddy installed diagram

Bearing Buddy Operation

Replace your existing grease cap with a Bearing Buddy to ensure a safe, easy way to monitor and control the level of grease in your axle hub. To adjust the amount of grease in the hub, use a grease gun to add more through the appropriate fitting. Adding grease moves the Bearing Buddy spring-loaded piston outward 1/8".

The O-ring inside the barrel of the Bearing Buddy maintains a seal from the outside. The interior of the Bearing Buddy is pressurized, preventing water from entering the barrel and diluting the grease.

An automatic pressure-relief feature is built into the Bearing Buddy. When the device is full, grease will seep around the edges of the piston and into the barrel. This prevents overfilling that can damage the inner seal.

You can manually check the grease level in your Bearing Buddy by pressing on the edge of the piston. If you can rock or move the piston, the hub is properly filled.

I have packed my wheel bearings on my trailer for the last time. Ordered a set of Bearing Buddies from etrailer.com and it took maybe 10 minutes to install them. Very high quality and will probably outlast my trailer. If you own a trailer and do not have Bearing Buddies on it.....Why not?

After a year the bearing buddies are working just as good as the day that I installed them. What used to be a half day job packing the wheel bearings are a half minute job.

by:

Ordered the wrong Bearing Buddies the first time the return process was quick and painless. My re-order arrived quickly and of course fit perfectly. These will make maintaining my trailer simple and quick, I'll never have a trailer without them.

Used these for years there great. First time ordering from etrailer they were EXCELLENT to deal with great price and quick shipping. Thanks

Put bearing buddies on my boat trailer last year greased them up and basically you never have to worry about your wheel bearings. Checked them in the spring this year put 1 shot of grease in each side and trailer's good to go fishing for the season.

I know the Bearing Buddy works great and just needed a replacement. etrailer has an easy to navigate site and more trailer parts than one could imagine. Their prices are great too!The customer service received at etrailer.com was STUPENDOUS!

I ordered the two new Buddies and within 10 minutes George J. with erailer emailed me and said the parts were in stock and would ship. An hour later I received another e-mail. This one was from Nancy W. She said the order was complete and had shipped. The e-mail provided a tracking number too. I chose the cheapest ship (4.99) and although I live in Washington state the package was received in 2 days. Everything was perfect!

I cannot overstate how great etrailer's customer service/communication was. I have never been a recipient of such great service on-line, no joke! Go with etrailer!!!!

This particular bearing buddy fits a 1 and 938 thousandths inch hub bore. I recommend to measure the hub bore with a digital caliper to get the most exact measurement.

  • Trailer Hub Bore Caps Which Fit Between 1.9" and 2.0" Hubs
It is best to use a Digital Caliper # PTW80157 to determine the exact size of your hub bore to find the correct size cap. A 1.988" Cap # F001518 is the most commonly found size on current 2,000lb and 3,500lb axles. We do also have a couple Bearing Buddy protectors in a few other rare sizes you can use. 1.938" Hub Bore # BB1938SS 1.968" Hub Bore # BB1968SS 1.980" Hub Bore # BB1980A-SS If none of these sizes will fit please let me know what size hub and bearings you have as I can recommend...

  • Recommended Grease Cap With Grease Fitting
Since I'm assuming you don't have an E-Z Lube axle or some equivalent with the zerk fitting on the end of the spindle, the only option would be to use a Bearing Buddy. What you have heard about the grease getting pushed out of the back only happens if they are overfilled. As long as you make sure to not add too much grease this will not be an issue. Before choosing a Bearing Buddy I recommend measuring the hub bore diameter. I would also use a digital caliper like the # PTW80157 since...

  • Do You have Grease Caps for a 1.935 Bore Diameter Hub
If there is any corrosion built up on the hub, it could be built up corrosion built up on the hub bore making the hole read smaller. Grease caps do not have to be very deep. They only have to go in far enough to fit snug and tight inside the hub bore. Many grease caps have a flange length of just a little over a 1/4 inch, and most are well under a 1/2 inch. If their is a bit of corrosion, try lightly scrubbing with some steel wool. After cleaning it up, a 1.943 cap like part # F001524...

  • Outer Diameter Measurement of Bearing Buddy Model 1938SS
According to Bearing Buddy, there is actually a slight variation in the outer diameter so there won't be an exact measurement. The variation will be somewhere between a hundredth or thousandth of an inch. Either way, since the # BB1938SS is designed to fit a 1.938" hub bore you will be able to use these with your hub. These are drive in caps that are supposed to be snug so they won't fall out, and the .003" difference is acceptable.
