Is There A Replacement Pin Box For The Lippert Rhino Box

Updated 06/30/2025 | Published 11/24/2021

Question:

Hello Kevin, thank you for the quick and thorough response. What if I used a product not carried by etrailer like the Pullrite Autoslider #2900?

The new Rhino Box from Lippert currently has no replacements so you won't be able to swap out this pin box with a Sidewinder to add more turning clearance. Because of this you'll have to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch in your 6.5' bed to help prevent the nose your 5th wheel from coming into contact with the cab of your 2021 Ram 3500.

Unfortunately since you have RamBoxes you will not be be able to tow a 5th wheel without using a rotating pin box and would not be able to tow a trailer with the Lippert Rhino Box as there's a significant chance that the pin box will come into contact with RamBox bedrails. You will need either purchase a different trailer that has a rotating pin box or pin box with a replaceable bolt pattern or purchase a new towing vehicle. Any dealer that would let you try to tow a trailer away with this combination is untrustworthy.

If you didn't have RamBoxes I would recommend the or a sliding 5th wheel I recommend the B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider - Dual Jaw - 20,000lbs # BWRVK3400-5W with the Custom Underbed Installation Kit for B&W Companion 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches # BWGNRK1320-5W. This custom fit underbed mount will leave your bed empty for full use when the hitch is removed. It will also allow you to switch between this 5th wheel hitch and a gooseneck hitch ball for more trailer versatility. The hitch features 1" Thick dual jaws provide 360-degree jaw-to-king-pin contact for less rattle and more security than slide-bar jaws and has 12" of front to back travel to provide extra turning clearance.

If you have the factory puck mounting system in the bed of your Ram (without RamBox) then I recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider for Ram Towing Prep Package - Dual Jaw - 20K # BWRVK3670 which is the same hitch as the # BWRVK3400-5W but comes with feet that will mount directly into the pucks for a super easy installation.

Even with the Pullrite Autoslider 2900 you would still face the same issue of the pin box coming into contact with the bedrails. Because the pivot point is in the bed with standard or sliding 5th wheel hitches the pin box is going to rotate left and right as you make turns. Ramboxes significantly reduce the width of the bed thus causing the contact issue. Rotating pin boxes move the pivot point out of the bed to the attachment point of the pin box at 5th wheel trailer. This means the body of the pin box is always going to be parallel to your bedrails and will not come into contact with them.

Kevin. Considering my first 5th Wheel. A Jayco 26REC 28 footer with the following Hitch Weight 1615 lbs Dry Weight 8055 lbs GVWR 9750 lbs Or similar from another brand. The Jayco comes with a Rhino Box and my new to me 2022 Ram 3500 has the puck system in the bed. I am a total noob when it comes to 5th's so I don't really know what I need in the bed. It is a short-bed 6.4 crew cab. Would you still recommend the B&W Companion ?? Are there any bed rail or tailgate issues???? Does not have Ram Box. Also, I have a third party rubber mat in the bed over rhino-lining, does the mat need to come out or be cut with the B&W? Thanks The Wookie.

@Thewookie With you having a short bed you'll definitely want to use a sliding 5th wheel hitch to ensure you have enough clearance between the nose of the trailer and the cab of the truck when making turns. For the puck system you'll want the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ Slider for Ram Towing Prep Package # BWRVK3670. There's a lot of factors that will need to be considered to determine if you'll have clearance issues with the tailgate or bedrails. The biggest one being the height setting for your 5th wheel hitch. If the Ram's be sits too high when the trailer it leveled it would require you to lower the hitch head down bringing the trailer and pin box closer to the truck bed. Most likely you'll be fine but we would need to take some actual measurements to confirm. The liner will likely need to be trimmed around the pucks for the hitch to drop in but you shouldn't have to trim too much from it. I would just get the hitch in and see where the mat fights the feet of the hitch and mark it to trim.

I have the same situation. 2022 Ram 2500 with ram boxes and a Jayco 5th wheel we just purchased with a Rhino pin box. I have a Sidewinder Elite Airborne, but the horizontal holes are off by a 1/2". Is there a turret replacement available or a rotating pin box on the market yet? Thanks
