Updated 03/01/2022 | Published 02/28/2022

Question:

I am planning on towing my 2008 Honda Element EX behind my RV and have a few questions: 1 Do you know the height of the towbar connection on the Roadmaster Baseplate Item # 1541-5 is? I want to determine if I need a hitch riser. What type of Loctite do you recommend for installing the baseplate? 3 Both my RV and the Element have separate brake/turn signal lamps. What wiring kits to you recommend to preserve that?

We do not know the exact height the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 1541-5 are going to sit as there are numerous factors that could change this measurement, like tire size for example. I've attached our help article below on high/low adapters that can help walk you through measuring for the correct adapter needed for your application or you can just use an stacked receiver like the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers # 325-GH-314 which has multiple receiver heights.

As for the Loctite, I recommend the Loctite Threadlocker 262 # LT37420. This high-strength red threadlocker locks and seals a variety of threaded assemblies, preventing unwanted loosening of nuts and bolts and thwarting corrosion of treated parts. Stands up to the worst shock, vibration and environmental conditions.

For the diode wiring kit I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. I've attached a diagram below for wiring in this diode kit.

Since you have separate lighting you'll need a wiring converter # 118158 and 2 additional diodes # RM-792 if you want to retain separate turn and brake signals.

You'll also need the Roadmaster Brake-Lite Relay Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-88400 to prevent your Element's brake signal from overriding the turn signal that comes from your RV. The brake light switch wire you'll splice into is White/Black.

To attach to your direct-connect style Roadmaster base plates you'll need the a Roadmaster tow bar like the Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522. This tow bar features non-binding latches and a large hookup radius to make connecting/disconnecting on any terrain easy peasy.

For a braking system I recommend the Brake Buddy Select 3 Portable Supplemental Braking System # HM39524. This system offers intense, emergency braking or steady, smooth braking in a single portable system. Easily switch between proportional or full braking from the cab of our motorhome using the remote. The included charge line kit will keep your Element's battery charge while you tow as well.

You'll also need some safety cables incase of a breakaway event, I recommend the # RM-643. The coiled design helps prevents the cables from dragging on the ground and being damaged.
