Question:
can I put a tow bar on the front of a 2000 Jeep grand cherokee so that I can tow it behind my RV

Expert Reply:
There are actually 5 things you will need in order to flat tow your 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee behind an RV. First, you will need to install base plates on the Jeep. You will then need a tow bar that is compatible with the base plates. Safety chains and lighting are the next two required items. And last but not least, most states now require a supplemental braking system on the vehicle that is being towed.
Base Plates:
You can use Roadmaster XL base plates, # 1419-5 (no longer available). The base plates provide a safe and secure attachment point for the tow bar.
Tow Bar:
For a tow bar compatible with XL base plates, I recommend the Falcon 2 Tow Bar, # RM-520. This is the most popular tow bar for XL base plates that we carry. I have included links to the installation details and a video review of the tow bar for you to view.
Safety Cables:
I recommend the Single Hook Coiled Cables, # RM-643. The coiled design helps to keep the cables from touching the ground. They are needed just in case the vehicle becomes disconnected from the RV.
Lighting:
There are several solutions for lighting. For a non-permanent solution, you can use a magnetic kit, # RM-2120. For a permanent solution you can wire the vehicle with diodes using Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit, # RM-154. I have included a link to a video showing a typical diode installation.
Supplemental Braking:
The easiest to use and install is the Roadmaster Even Brake Portable Proportional Braking , # RM-9400. This unit is a proportional controller that applies the vehicle brakes in proportion to how much the RV is braking. This provides the safest type of braking and saves wear and tear on the vehicle and RV.
