Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Easy to Upgrade to Active Sway Control

Easily upgrade this weight distribution hitch with the Reese Strait-Line dual-cam sway control

  • This system doesn't control sway out of the box - but you can remedy that later on
  • The bars are specifically made to work with Reese's premium Strait-Line sway control system
    • Just add on the dual cams and get better control when cornering, swerving, and dealing with wind
    • Great sway control, but can get pretty noisy when you make turns
  • For a more economical option, you can add a bar-style friction sway control to either side of your trailer (or both sides, if you have a really long trailer)
    • Uses friction to force your trailer back in line when it gets pushed off course
    • Has to be removed at times (e.g. in the rain or when you're backing up), but its adjustable tension is a plus

Note: Neither of these sway control systems will work with surge-type actuators.

People often conflate sway control with weight distribution. It's understandable because most weight distribution systems on the market today do solve issues with sway.

This system will give you weight distribution only. It doesn't have any sway control built in. But if you find that you need sway control later, it's super-easy to upgrade to Reese's Strait-Line sway control system by adding on the dual-cam brackets (RP26002 - sold separately).

Get the Full Setup: If sway control is something you need right now to keep your trailer from getting squirrelly, take a look at RP66074 for a complete Strait-Line system.

A view of a Reese Strait-Line weight distribution system shows the flexing of the bars under weight.

Alternatively, you can add a friction sway bar (sold separately) for a little more reinforcement. This option allows you to easily dial in the amount of tension with the turn of a handle. This adjustability is nice (even if it takes you a few trips to get it just right), but it doesn't play well with surge-type actuators (neither does the Strait-Line dual cam system), and it will have to be removed when backing up any time you tow on wet or slippery roads.

Simple Setup with Serrated Washers

A top-down view of the Reese weight distribution hitch shows the design of the head and serrated washer feature

  • No more piling on washers
  • Exterior, serrated washers let you adjust the head without having to take everything apart

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on this system make adjusting the tilt of the weight distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust, and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

Thoroughly torture tested between 7500 lb camper and 10500 lb trailerable a houseboat. Bought the anti-sway cams separately off [online] due to availability. Combined as a system, this stopped anti-sway and saved my butt during a hard downpour rain and side winds. The cams were the difference in pulling off to get to safety vs laying on the side of road upside down like some 18 wheeliers.

Yes, its expensive. No, you dont buy another one unless you sell it with the camper / trailer.

Ive used this on 10K houseboat trailers and 7.5K campers, this is the one you are looking for. The adjustable head makes all the different in adjusting weight between front and rear truck axles. It really does remove over understeer on the truck when set correctly. This was tested from 60 - 75 MPH, no death wobble. Purchase the anti-sway arms, after one good wind sheer, your nerves will thank you.

This was my first encounter with etrailer and I have to say it was hands down the best service I have ever received! Really.. And no I don't work for etrailer!!!!!! We use to live in a country where good service was just a way of life. Today, lets face it, service is terrible! But not etrailer.. I placed an order for this product online and selected the normal shipping method by ground. I immediately got the normal email "thank you for your order". But then I got another email from an actual person, George.. George let me know the product was in their distribution facility and will ship in 24-48 hours.. To my surprise, the order shipped the same day and I received another email from a Frank stating they took the liberty of upgrading my shipping to 3 to 5 days express shipping instead of the normal 5 to 7 days at no charge to me! So my response to this was "wow great service thank you!".. Again to my surprise I received an email from a Nikki who thanked me for my positive feedback. On a side note can you believe, they actually put their direct phone with extension along their email address on the bottom of their emails so you can actually get in touch with them? I didn't think this type of stellar service existed anymore.. Kudos to etrailer.. Ok, I think I almost forgot to write about the actual product.. The product was made very well, hooked up with no issues, and when I had questions on adjustments, you guessed it, i called and emailed folks at etrailer and they actually helped me!!!! They could have sent me a box of cracker jacks and I would have given then an excellent review! :) Keep up the great work etrailer... I won't shop anywhere else for my trailer needs..

Over satisfied with the Reese Straight Line hitch!! It does everything it says it will with no question!! I had a regular Reese equalizer and got a lot of sway with my 34 foot Springdale behind my 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, and the Reese Straight Line eliminated ALL of it!! The installation process is a little tricky but with the instructions and the video etrailer has on YouTube, it worked out just great!! Completely satisfied with the help and knowledge from etrailer!!!!

Product arrived a day early. ETrailer has excellent shipping. I haven’t installed the hitch yet, however I opened the box right away. All of the parts were there and it was wrapped up very well. No scratches or chipped paint at all. Looks like a very good product. Can’t wait to use it. Thanks ETrailer.

Truck ended up in the shop. Blown engine. We cancelled the order for the time being. Sales rep was very helpful both in helping to order the hitch and canceling the order as a result of the engine problem.

I will seriously consider reordering a hitch from etrailer. The rep was very helpful on
helping us purchase the right hitch. It was delivered at the approximate time as promised. Unfornately we had to return it as the truck is in the garage.

Lighting fast shipping!! Just received my hitch, and installed it last night. Straight forward instructions really took about an hour and a half by time I had it all adjusted and fit right. It seems to be well made and very heavy duty. I am super pleased with E-Trailer; their customer service is top notch (Andi Rocks!!).
I highly recommend E-Trailer for any hauling help..

The product was all it was advertised to be. Easy assembly very heavy duty. I have not towed my 33ft toy hauler camper yet but know it will be satisfactory. I would recommend this product.

Package arrived today ahead of schedule and in good condition. Product is as specified and packaged well. Looking forward to getting it setup and working.
Don't forget to order a hitch ball and bar if you don't already have one.

This is my second weight distribution hitch, which was made by Reese and the first one was used from 1993 to 2017. Although I bought the trunnion bar hitch, as it was the same type as my first hitch, there are changes in the design of the hitch, which I believe will be improvements over the older design. I'm ready to get on the road with this Reese hitch pulling my travel trailer.

by:

Updated my weight distribution hitch from 800lb to 1200lb. Vanessa helped me get what I needed. It was shipped and delivered quickly and at a fair price.

  • How to Determine Correct Weight Distribution System Spring Bars Are Needed
Weight distribution hitches are classified by the range of trailer tongue weights their spring bars are rated for. If your current weight distribution hitch like the # RP66022 you'd looked at is rated for up to 12000 lbs, then the bars would be rated at 10% of that, which would be 1200 lbs. If the 6000 lb weight you mentioned represents the weight of the fully loaded trailer, then the tongue weight of the trailer should be somewhere in the 600-900 lbs range. The weight of a trailer hitch (or weight distribution system) does not get factored as additional cargo weight or tongue weight. • Does Truck Payload Count as Tongue Weight on Trailer Hitch
This is a really good question, but the short answer is you are fine and not above the capacity. So payload is not the same as tongue weight capacity so you don't have to take one and add it to the other, and also with weight distribution you have to factor the weight behind the rear axle of the truck as tongue weight when picking out a system, but that extra weight does not really factor against the tongue weight capacity of the hitch. That said a weight distribution is a great option...
