Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I bought these wheels for my Harbor Freight trailer, 1 year ago. They have been fantastic!
I trailer a dirtbike(s) 150-300'lbs, and it rides so smooth in the back, I don't even know I have a trailer hooked to my car.
I did not trust the original tires for the speed I occasionally drive, they weren't 'safe' for me. The 13" Loadstars are massive in comparison, and give a Much better/smoother ride, and because they have a much higher speed rating, feel safe when going above the limit. I would buy again, 100%. Love them.

by:

Galvanized coating on wheel poorly applied. It has collected in “blobs” on the wheel. Surely this imbalances the wheel unnecessarily. Would not recommend.

Well that doesnt look good! Unfortunately this is very common with these rims and the galvanizing process. These are dipped then drip dry. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to assist you.

Bought wheel and tire to use as spare, but it looks so good I'm thinking about ordering another and using an old wheel and tire for spare. Also kelley was super helpful taking my order and answering my questions.

by:

Changed the boat trailer into a flat bed trailer. The new tires and wheels makes it look very nice.

e-trailer delivered on time in a couple days! Great service… and I would but thru them again!

Purchased trailer wheels/tires. Tires look fine (China origin). Galvanized rims look pretty bad with weld marks showing on in/out sides. Hoping the bead seal is good … will only know over time…

Yeah, unfortunately, this is a very common issue with galvanized rims. When the steel or iron is dipped into zinc, it is then air dried. Which does not always come out looking the best.

by:

Thanks for your follow-up. Attached is a photo of the new wheels/tires mounted on my trailer. The 35+ year old girl hasn't looked that good in a long time. Can't wait to tow something and not have to pump air in the leaking rims before hitting the road. Thanks for the excellent product line and fast service.

The Kenda tires are not working out as expected. One has developed a slow leak, with no obvious damage to the tire, such as nail or puncture. I havent had a chance to water tank test it to see if the problem is the valve, bead, wheel, or tire.Have you had any other similar problems reported with Kenda tires that would indicate where to focus?

Etrailer Expert

Rachael H.

6/24/2015

Thanks for the follow up Rick, we have not heard of any issues specific to these tires. I think the water tank test sounds like the best way to figure out where the slow leak is. Thanks for your feedback.

The tires look awesome on his trailer.

by:

No problems with the order or the tires and rims. New deck, new paint, new lights and last but not least new rims and tires.

by:

When the tire alone sells for $90 elsewhere, it's a no brainier not to get a new wheel and tire combo for $112 with free shipping! Kenda tires have always held up very well for me.

by:

I ordered tire and wheels for my trailer. The wheels existing on the trailer were 4 bolt patter from a 1965 Ford Falcon. The tires and wheels were fine except the bolt pattern did not line up. I can not use these and was told by someone at Your company to measure the bolt pattern which I can do. I certainly don’t need 4 tires, the tires are fine. It’s the wheels that don’t fit. I should not have to send measurements if your company had sent wheel for the specific car I mentioned. I know these to be correct because I took them off that car that had been in the family since new.

I did measure as well as I could centerline to center line and measured 3 and 1/4 inches. I don’t think that’s the best way to order wheels because there are so many iteration close but just off a bit. But I’d like to have wheels that fit. Right now I have a nice set of wheels and tires from you which I can’t use.

I have attached a help article with the easiest way to measure bolt pattern. I do want to point out that etrailer only sells trailer tires and wheels. These are not recommended for vehicles of any kind.

by:

Thank you. They are very nice and they look awesome. Thank you again.

Excellent quality at an excellent price, showed up to the house in a timely manor, bolted on the trailer and back to work!

I live in a fairly rural community in IL. I have a little 4'×8' trailer I could not find tires for anywhere. Even my tire hoarding contacts didn't have any. The obsolete tire was a 155 R13 78S. I went to 4 local stores and only 1 had a 13 inch tire and only 1 in stock. Because there would have been a size difference I was going to need 2 tires. The price without tax was 79.00 for each tire. They had one 13 inch tire on a rim in stock, however it was a 5 bolt and I needed a 4 bolt. My store couldn't even order them. So I turned to the internet and found etrailer. I found these AM3S130 tires on rims with a 4 bolt pattern. I was hoping they'd fit under my fenders, but they were my only option I found in my hunt. I figured if they were too tall I'd just have the fenders removed and welded back on at a higher height. I was ecstatic to see free shipping for my order over $100. Shipping was fast and the tires were perfect fit! I'm ready to mow yards and hit the auctions again. Well, if the State of IL ever opens up again. Thank you etrailer!

I'm very pleased with my rims & tires purchase. I received them quicker than expected. I would definitely purchase more items from etrailer.

by:

I purchased these tires for my boat trailer. I trailer my boat approx. 1200 miles to Canada to go fishing. The shipping was quick, communications were good and the product was as described. They were easy to order using the instructions and diagrams provided on their website for the bolt pattern. They fit perfectly and I will order from etrailer again.

by:

The rims seem very rough. Time will tell how the tires and rims hold up.

  • Harbor Freight Trailer Tire 4.80-12 Upgrade Recommendation with Higher Speed Rating
The difference between the 4.80-12 tire size you have now and the size 175/80-13 of the # AM3S130 you referenced is 4 inches overall in diameter and in width 2.2 inches. Judging by your pictures it doesn't look like you quite have the clearance for the larger size but since your reason for wanting to upgrade was to have a higher speed rating your best option would be to switch to the # TT48012C which is the size you have now and has a speed rating of 81 mph. The factors that you will want to consider when increasing your tire size are wheel bolt pattern, tire width, tire clearance and overall trailer height. The Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Tire, # AM3S130, that you referenced has the same 4 on 4 bolt pattern as your current tires so that will work.
