Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Wheel and tire looks in excellent condition, not yet put on trailer.

This product is holding up well. It is on a trailer used on a golf course.

Wheel and tire combination arrived promptly. look forward to trailering across America

Looks good. Better quality than the cheapest choice. By Kenda.
I'm selling a motorcycle trailer. It sat in my yard for 10 years and the rims are rusted and the tires rotted, so I bought these to make the sale easier.
Now it looks so nice I should keep it!

These wheels and tires have been on the small teardrop camper I built over a year. They work great. The team at etrailer helped me select the best wheel and tire for my application and then they shipped very fast. I couldn't be more pleased.

David J.

I have had no issues with the tires. During the past year I have been over some pretty rough roads full of pot holes in SC. They have preformed perfectly. Thanks to etrailer for recommending them.

bought 2 to replace old 6.50-13ST boat trailer tires.
they are an exact match!

Great tires, wheels, packing job, packing and delivery! Pictures don't do wheels justice! They look much better in person.

Got the new tires quick and got the crappie barge out on the lake thanks to for having right tires for the job

Great quality product. It was received exactly as described in the product details. I mounted this as a spare tire and wheel on my 2010 Carry-on utility trailer's tongue using the MT70214 spare tire carrier.

After a year since my purchase, the tire and wheel are still performing as expected. I am still very pleased with my purchase from

Only received one, I ordered 2

Oh no! I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

The tires came really fast and they look great on my trailer!

Great tires, great value, finished off my 'new to me' camper nicely.

great price on a set of trailer tires, very well packaged, good communication and fast fast fast shipping!

Quality product, fair pricing.

The wheels and tires were just as described and work great. They fit perfectly and were shipped really quickly. The price was very reasonable as well. Thanks for a great experience!

Chad S.

I have had these on my trailer for about a year now. They are working GREAT! They are holding up to the abuse we have put them through and come out on the other end without a scratch.

This tire and wheel are great, bought for a Triton aluminum trailer. But the best was the etrailer service - shipped immediately, arrived in two days, inflated and ready to put on.

Wheel and tire are both working great.

Kept putting off that I needed to get a spare for my boat, and finally had the dreaded flat and no spare. (Wife didn't say "I told you so", but I could see it in her eyes.) I started checking around and stumbled across eTrailer. They carried an ST175/80D13 trailer tire with 13" white wheel, exactly the tire and rim I needed, and at a better price than I could find locally, plus free shipping. This is the place for trailer tires if you're looking for a good product at a good price, and fast delivery. No more worrying about the dreaded "I told you should have bought a spare" for me.

Time will tell if I am happy with the tires and rims I purchased from But I can say that when I called with a few questions about my purchase, Donna was very friendly and helpful. She answered all my questions and made this internet order very easy. I ordered my tires and rims on Wednesday April 11th and they were at my front door on Monday April 16th. The tires were freshly manufactured according to the date stamp on the tires. I raised the load and speed rating from my old trailer tires for added safety and durability. Free shipping, no tax, on complaints. Thank you Donna and all at

I received the tires and rims in a very short time. They look good. I will be install them on my Scamp trailer this weekend. Very impressed with Etrailer's prompt delivery.

James V.

We used the trailer with the Loadstar ST17580D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 . I put 10000 mile on the with a trip to Alaska. The tires are pretty much used up now. I thought I would get better mileage with them. Not very good May be 2 stars for tread life,

This is more a review of etrailer than on the tire. But as for the tire, it is an exact match to the two I have on my trailer. I bought the trailer used and it did not have a spare.

Now on to my review of etrailer. I looked high and low to try to find this tire and nobody carried the D load rated version of this tire, which is what my trailer requires. I then scoured the web and, while I was able to find the tire itself at several different online stores, I was unable to find it installed on the rim (needed for a spare tire) until I came upon etrailer. I was leaving for a week long camping trip in eight days and was able to get the tire delivered in what turned out to be four business days (I selected five-day shipping and ended up getting the tire in four). Having spent just over $100 for the tire and two dehumidifiers, the five-day expedited shipping did not cost much., which I had never heard of before my search for a spare tire, saved the day, and I will be sure to use them for other trailer needs in the future.

I purchased four of these wheel and tire sets two years ago from etrailer at a real good price. I used an old wheel and tire for a spare. It never felt right though to use an old tire for this purpose so I recently looked on etrailer's site and found they still sold the exact same wheel and tire. (and at the identical price). Now I have a full set of five that match perfectly. Thanks etrailer for selling the exact same product.

great tire works as expected, would order again

Top quality D rated (1600@65 PSI) tires and rims at same price others sell C rated tires. Good having an extra 500 lbs. of load capacity for my boat trailer. Liked the beefy tread and expect to get many miles of use.

Packaging of 2 rims and tires was done perfectly with long box so rims were never touching while in transit.

Very good shopping experience.

Wow, is great! I live in Phoenix, AZ and I could not believe that none of the big tire companies in the city could get these tires. not only had them in stock for immediate shipping but, also the price was very reasonable. No charge for shipping and they arrived in 4 business days. They were packaged so there was no abrasions during shipping. They were mfg. in 2013.
They were not old left over stock. I have not had them on the road yet but I don't for see any problems. If you need this tire size with a load range-D you can't go wrong getting them at

Just want to say thanks for your quick shipping and excellent communication !! I upgraded the trailer tires from 480-12 to 175/8013 D to handle hauling my ranger instead of a 4 wheeler ( still within trailer load limits up to 3500 lbs). I wanted the extra weight rating and 8 ply tires since im on logging roads and old trails a lot. And ,I still have 2 inches to spare. Should do everything I need.

The product was most excellent and the low price even better. Having the tires mounted by etrailer made for a less expensive experience at the tire shop, as I only needed balancing which cost me $10.00. The quick delivery and the web site information at etrailer was perfect. The page describing how to measure for the correct rims was succinct and yet straightforward simple. I would recommend etrailer for price and for inventory to any of my family and friends.

  • Wheel and Tire Recommendation for a Boat Trailer with 3,500 lb Boat
The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" White Wheel # AM31233 that you referenced has a 1,610 lbs at 65 psi weight capacity per wheel/tire. For your trailer that is towing a 3,500 lb boat this should work well since your trailer has tandem axles. To get the maximum capacity for a trailer tire you need to have it inflated to it's max psi. This wheel has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern. You will need to verify that you have the same bolt pattern on your trailer. See linked article. Your...

  • Looking for Replacement Wheel/Tires for 1977 StarCraft Galaxy 8 Pop Up Camper
If your hubs are lug centric, the fact that the # AM31233 has a larger pilot diameter won't cause any problem. If you attach your current wheels with lug nuts (and NOT lug bolts) you have a lug centric wheel. However, if you have a hub centric wheel where the wheels are held on with lug bolts, the pilot diameter of your new wheel would need to match that of your old ones. The # AM31233 wheel/tire combo you mentioned uses a ST175/80-13 tire that's 24 inches in diameter and has a section...

  • What Is The Offset of The 13 X 4.5 Inch Wheel on the Americana Tire and Wheel, # AM31233
The offset on the 13x4.5 inch wheel in the Americana Tires and Wheels, # AM31233, is zero. On most trailer wheels the offset will be zero because the wheel is designed along with the tire to be able to handle a certain maximum load, so you will want the load distributed equally to both sides of the wheel.

  • Can I Use a Trailer Wheel with a Different Size Pilot Diameter
The only time the pilot diameter will matter is if the wheel is hub piloted (wheel is centered by the hub) or if the diameter is too small. So you can use a wheel that has a larger pilot diameter as long as it is stud piloted (centered by the wheel studs). You will be able to use the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM31233. The Loadstar tire will be about 2 inches wider than your existing tire so you will need to make sure the trailer can accept a tire this size.

  • Differences Between Bias Ply and Radial Tire
There are two types of tires, a radial ply and bias ply tire. The difference lies in how the tire is constructed. The cords inside the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle at a bias to the direction of travel. On a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees or perpendicular to the direction of travel, across the tire. Because of the way it is constructed, a radial tire will has more flex and will allow ground contact that is more...

  • Will Using a Load Range C Trailer Tire Provide a Better Ride than a Load Range D in the Same Size
If you are talking about the same tire you would want to keep it inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. With less air pressure the capacity will decrease. Also, when under inflated a trailer tire will build up excessive heat and that can lead to tire failure. So if the tire is rated for 65psi you will want to keep 65psi in it. If the trailer requires load range C tires and you put a load range D on it instead you might notice a stiffer ride because the load range...

Most pop up campers accept a 2 inch hitch ball like the Tow Ready # 63845 but unfortunately there's not a way for me to verify if this is the right size for your 1977 Starcraft Galaxy 6 as trailer manufacturer's don't do the best job of making information like this available, especially on older models like this. All other things being equal, it is always preferable to have matching tires on your trailer. Different tire brands may have different tread depths and may wear at different rates due to variances in the formula used in their rubber compound. However, you can use the two different tires if you wish. That being said, the Hub Assembly part # 84550BX that you referenced centers on the lugs so pilot diameter isn't important. This is a lug-centric setup. If the hub used wheel bolts instead of lugs the setup would be considered hub-centric and the pilot diameter would be important. It's also important...
