Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Great tires, wheels, packing job, packing and delivery! Pictures don't do wheels justice! They look much better in person.

These wheels and tires have been on the small teardrop camper I built over a year. They work great. The team at etrailer helped me select the best wheel and tire for my application and then they shipped very fast. I couldn't be more pleased.

Comments
I have had no issues with the tires. During the past year I have been over some pretty rough roads full of pot holes in SC. They have preformed perfectly. Thanks to etrailer for recommending them.

They were months late on delivery and would not discount the product or offer a substitute at a discount. etrailer did nothing to make the extremely late shipment right. If you need anything in a timely manner or when your told you would receive it, I would go elsewhere.

Fine spare tire, and thankfully it hasn't needed to be used yet.

Time will tell if I am happy with the tires and rims I purchased from etrailer.com. But I can say that when I called with a few questions about my purchase, Donna was very friendly and helpful. She answered all my questions and made this internet order very easy. I ordered my tires and rims on Wednesday April 11th and they were at my front door on Monday April 16th. The tires were freshly manufactured according to the date stamp on the tires. I raised the load and speed rating from my old trailer tires for added safety and durability. Free shipping, no tax, on complaints. Thank you Donna and all at etrailer.com.

The tires arrived in great condition and served me well. Last fall though I noticed that one had gone flat but it was really late in the season for me to take a look at it. And where I need to park my vehicle I can't easily check it out. I'll be doing so within the next day or so and am hoping it isn't a defect in the tire. Probably a nail or something.

- AM31233

Great price for this tire.

- AM31233
by:

The product was most excellent and the low price even better. Having the tires mounted by etrailer made for a less expensive experience at the tire shop, as I only needed balancing which cost me $10.00. The quick delivery and the web site information at etrailer was perfect. The page describing how to measure for the correct rims was succinct and yet straightforward simple. I would recommend etrailer for price and for inventory to any of my family and friends.

Wow, etrailer.com is great! I live in Phoenix, AZ and I could not believe that none of the big tire companies in the city could get these tires. Etrailer.com not only had them in stock for immediate shipping but, also the price was very reasonable. No charge for shipping and they arrived in 4 business days. They were packaged so there was no abrasions during shipping. They were mfg. in 2013. They were not old left over stock. I have not had them on the road yet but I don't for see any problems. If you need this tire size with a load range-D you can't go wrong getting them at etrailer.com.

Couldn't have been easier. Great selection. Had exactly the tire I needed (LRD for my camp trailer to replace the aging LRC tires on it). Shipped same day and arrived 3 days later. Excellent communication. Easy install and great looking. If I need tires for my camp trailer again, I'll know where to go first and save time and money shopping around. Thanks a bunch!

hey patrick. the tires just came back from a 4000 mile round trip thru the good ol usa and look like new. im very happy with my purchase 1 year and about 4500 total miles later. it was less expensive to buy 2 new tires and wheels than it would have been for me to buy tires and install them.

  • 13 inch Trailer Tire and Wheel Combos with 4 on 4 Bolt Pattern and 2.8 inch Pilot Hole
The pilot hole on a wheel for a trailer only matters if the wheel secures to the hub using lug bolts instead of lug nuts or if the hole size is too small to fit over the hub. One of our 13 inch tire and wheel combos with the 4 on 4 bolt pattern does have a 2.8 inch pilot hole. It is # AM3S101. I have linked a video review of it for you.

The Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Load Range D Bias Trailer Tire, part # AM31233, is a pre-mounted trailer tire and wheel combination that uses a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and has a white powder-coat finish. We also offer a version with a galvanized steel wheel, part # AM31242. This tire/wheel is rated for a maximum speed of 65 mph, but local speed limit laws should always be observed. It is rated for a maximum load of 1610 pounds at 65 lbs psi inflation. It is vital that your trailer...

  • Can I Use a Trailer Wheel with a Different Size Pilot Diameter
The only time the pilot diameter will matter is if the wheel is hub piloted (wheel is centered by the hub) or if the diameter is too small. So you can use a wheel that has a larger pilot diameter as long as it is stud piloted (centered by the wheel studs). You will be able to use the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM31233. The Loadstar tire will be about 2 inches wider than your existing tire so you will need to make sure the trailer can accept a tire this size.

  • Differences Between Bias Ply and Radial Tire
There are two types of tires, a radial ply and bias ply tire. The difference lies in how the tire is constructed. The cords inside the tire are run in different directions. On a bias tire, the cords run at a 32 degree angle at a bias to the direction of travel. On a radial tire, the cords will run at 90 degrees or perpendicular to the direction of travel, across the tire. Because of the way it is constructed, a radial tire will has more flex and will allow ground contact that is more...

  • Do the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 inch Wheel, part # AM31233, Come Balanced
The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 inch White Wheel, part # AM31233, is received from the supplier already with the tire mounted on the wheel. The supplier does not balance the combination, but when the tire is installed to the wheel they will line the high (heavy) spot on the tire with the low (light) spot on the wheel. This does not completely balance the tire and wheel combination but it does eliminate any excessive out of balance condition. It would be a good idea...

  • Will Using a Load Range C Trailer Tire Provide a Better Ride than a Load Range D in the Same Size
If you are talking about the same tire you would want to keep it inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire sidewall. With less air pressure the capacity will decrease. Also, when under inflated a trailer tire will build up excessive heat and that can lead to tire failure. So if the tire is rated for 65psi you will want to keep 65psi in it. If the trailer requires load range C tires and you put a load range D on it instead you might notice a stiffer ride because the load range...

For your trailer that is towing a 3,500 lb boat this should work well since your trailer has tandem axles. To get the maximum capacity for a trailer tire you need to have it inflated to it's max psi. However, if you have a hub centric wheel where the wheels are held on with lug bolts, the pilot diameter of your new wheel would need to match that of your old ones. • What is Best Replacement 175/D13 Trailer Tire: Loadstar ST175/D13, Part # AM31233, or Carlisle
All other things being equal, it is always preferable to have matching tires on your trailer. Different tire brands may have different tread depths and may wear at different rates due to variances in the formula used in their rubber compound. However, you can use the two different tires if you wish. As we do not offer the Carlisle tires, I suggest you use a second Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13, part # AM31233, and keep the Carlisle as your spare.

The offset on the 13x4.5 inch wheel in the Americana Tires and Wheels, # AM31233, is zero. On most trailer wheels the offset will be zero because the wheel is designed along with the tire to be able to handle a certain maximum load, so you will want the load distributed equally to both sides of the wheel.

That way, you would be able to compare your current studs to ones offered with the 1/2 inch diameter and replace them. • Rim and Tire Recommendation for Use with 84550BX Hubs
For starters it's not recommended to use vehicle rims on a trailer hub. Truck rims are not rated for the vertical loads that trailers see so I would strongly recommend you go with a trailer tire. That being said, the Hub Assembly part # 84550BX that you referenced centers on the lugs so pilot diameter isn't important. This is a lug-centric setup. If the hub used wheel bolts instead of lugs the setup would be considered hub-centric and the pilot diameter would be important. It's also...

  • Can Bias Ply Spare Be Used on Trailer with Radial Tires
Yes, as long as the spare tire is the same size, load range (weight rating) and has the matching wheel bolt pattern you can use a bias ply spare to replace a radial main tire for the short distance you'll travel to get the radial repaired or replaced. For example, the 5-on-4-1/2 bias ply # AM31233 can be used as a spare to replace radial # AM31994. You do not want to run the trailer with mixed tires for any substantial distance but to get you to a repair shop it is fine.
